Fort Frances Lakers gave up the tying goal 13 seconds left in regulation then lost 4-3 in a shoot out to the visiting Dryden Ice Dogs at the Memorial Sports Centre last night.

Lakers had led 3-1 in the third on goals from Jordan Larson, Ryan Wildman and Brandon Fehd.

Members of the Border Skating Club earned a handful of gold medals at the Sunset Country Regional Skating Championships on the weekend in Kenora.

Alina Eldridge earned three first place finishes while Sophie Potvin-Begin took two firsts.

Jamie Spencer also won in Junior Bronze solo dance.

Fort France Canadians AA midget team captured a tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota with an 8-nothing win over a team from Montana in the final.

Sam Berube and Brandon Sinclair each had a pair of goals with singles from Lucas Koomans, Tyler Fontana, Gabe Handorgan and Dylan Grinsell.

Canadians went undefeated, giving up just one goal along the way.

Skates and Blades bantam girls hockey team was a tournament winner in Dryden.

Pharmasave Wildcats won bronze in the midget division of the same tournament while the ACO Electric Chargers placed fourth.

Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team swept South Dakota State 6-1 and 3-2.

Katie Stearns of Fort Frances earned both wins in net.

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team doubled up Kittson Central Friday 10-5 then beat Red Lake Falls Saturday 7-4.

The SIJHL has awarded a 1-0 victory to the Lakers in their January 18 game with Dryden after determining the Ice Dogs had dressed 21 players, one more than allowed by Hockey Canada.

The Lakers had lost that game 6-4.

Brett Musich had a five-goal night as the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team defeated Ely 9-1.

Four players reached double digits in scoring as the Broncos boys basketball team beat Eveleth-Gilbert 82-32.

Gunnar Anderson led all Broncos with 17 points.

Fort Frances Firemen and Atikokan reached the quarterfinals of the pee-wee division at the Robin's tournament in Thunder Bay.

International Falls Broncos girls hockey team defeated Park Rapids and Brainard this weekend by identical 5-2 scores.

The Gold squad defeated Rainy River 14-25, 25-23 and 15-13 for the win.

The Black team placed 6th overall.

A loss to the eventual winner, Kendra Lilly of Sudbury Saturday, knocked Keffer, who now curls out of the Port Arthur Club, out of contention.

Brennan Wark's Port Arthur rink earned his ticket to the national men's juniors after capturing the northern Ontario crown in Atikokan.

He defeated Dustin Montpellier of Sudbury in the final game 7-3.

The seniors cruised to a 56-19 victory over Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos for their second straight win.

The juniors lost 27-26 to the Broncos.

In girls volleyball, the juniors were victorious in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-12 and 25-22

The seniors fell in four.

Rainy River Owls girls volleyball teams head into the Christmas break leading the NORWOSSA A standings.

The senior girls moved into a share of the lead with Kenora's Thomas Aquinas following a 3-set sweep of Atikokan Wednesday.

The Seniors defeated Dryden 46-40.

The juniors were 41-39 winners over the Eagles in overtime.

The Owls took the girls basketball games with the seniors winning 33-31 and the junior earning a decisive 43-18 victory.

In boys volleyball, the Voyageurs won the senior match-up in four sets while the junior took a five-set match from the Owls.

In games last week, the Owls swept games played against Ignace Wednesday while the boys volleyball teams loss games to Whitefish Bay Thursday.

Fort Frances Muskies court teams end their regular season with home games against the Dryden Eagles.

The junior girls basketball team can clinch a bye to the NORWOSSA finals with a win.

Playoff take place next week in Dryden.

Fort France Lakers lead the league, but its the Wisconsin Wilderness who are still the only SIJHL team among the weekly top 20 junior A teams in Canada.

The Wilderness are second.

The Lakers did receive a honourable mention in voting this past week.

Luke Skaarup continues to show he's one of the strongest men in the country.

The Fort Frances resident won strongman competitions this weekend in Winkler and Saskatoon.

In Winkler Saturday, he won all five events while in Saskatoon yesterday he took three of five events and placed second in two others.

Kevin Rissanen of Atikokan and Cory Nephin of Geraldton captured the Atikokan Bass Classic.

Their two-day catch of 42.62 pounds was more than six pounds greater than second place finishers Aaron and Kim Wiens of Atikokan.

Manitou Forest Products and Al's Racquet Stringing are this year's champions in the Borderland Soccer League.

Manitou won the men's title by blanking the Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 2-0.

Al's Racquet Stringing won the women's crown by the same 2-0 score over Taggs Source for Sports.

The League also handed out its season-ending awards.

Mitch Cain with Manitou and Sara Roach with Taggs were named the division's MVP's

Pharmasave's Mark Clifford and Amy Wilson-Hands with Boston Pizza picked up the top goaltender awards.

Jeremy Nussbaumer with Pharmasave and Laureen Peters and Allison Brown with Boston Pizza earned the Golden Boot awards as the divisions top goal scorers.

Other winners were Dirk Friesen with Emo and Jessica Caul of the Voyageurs as the most sportsman like.

Defensive Players of the Year were Mike Ohman with Pharmasave and Jessica Taggart.

Laura Baer with Manitou and Boston Pizza's Claire Hyatt were named Rookies of the Year.

The Sight and Sound Wolves dropped their first game at the North American Fastpitch Association's World Series in Rockford Illinois.

The Wolves lost 3-1 to a team from Illinois.

They'll play a team from Memphis Tennessee this afternoon.

The Superior International Junior Hockey League has released the schedule for the 2011-12 season.

Fort Frances Lakers will open the campaign with a home game on September 16 against the Thunder Bay North Stars.

The league will also be showing all games on-line through a pay-per-view service.

Manitou Forest Products will face the Rendez-Vous Voyageurs in Thursday's men's championship game after blanking Emo last night 2-0.

Tyler Barker scored both goals while Mark Faragher got the shutout.

On the women's side, Al's Racquet Stringing beat the Voyageurs 3-1 and will face Taggs Source for Sports for the divisional title Thursday.

Two more teams have been eliminated from the Rainy River District Fastball League playoffs.

Barwick evicted Manitou with a 10-2 victory.

And the Big Grassy Lightning were forced to forfeit their game against Big Island after failing to field a full team.

Elsewhere, Beef Warriors held on for a 6-4 win over Rainy River.

Sight and Sound beat the Big Grassy Braves 11-6.

Shocking upsets in the Borderland Soccer League's playoffs last night.

Taggs Source for Sports, winners of just two games in the regular season, shocked the women's front runners, Boston Pizza, 8-2 to advance to the final.

Stephanie Mattson and Courtney Roach each had hat tricks for Taggs.

On the men's side, the Rendez-Vous Voyageurs tripped Pharmasave 2-1 to earn a trip to Thursday's final.

Tonight, Al's Racquet Stringing plays the Voyageurs women's team while Manitou Forest Products and Emo are on the pitch in a men's semi-final.

48-year-old Lori Green was 17th among female finishers and second in her age group.

38-year-old Jason Kabel was 10th in his age category.

Feature races at Emo Speedway got washed out Saturday.

The main events for the street stock, modified and midwest mods will be run next Saturday.

Borderland's Fort Freakshow combined with Timmins Gold Miners' daughters for a roller derby bout in Sault Ste. Marie where they defeated the home team 133-89.

Fort Freakshow will hold a home contest next month.

The Eagles were eliminated from the post-season in a 12-4 loss to Barwick while the Lightning were upset by Northwest Bay 11-4.

Elsewhere Beefs Warriors put Manitou on the brink of elimination with a 10-nothing win.

Kimbi Copenace had a pair of homers in the game.

The trucks return to Emo Speedway tomorrow.

About a dozen drivers who compete in the Super Truck series in Winnipeg will part of the regular race schedule.

It's the third time the trucks have raced at Emo.

Manitoba anglers Alex Kezler and Wayne Wagner have the early lead at the Kenora Bass International.

The angling duo bagged nearly 19-pounds of bass on the first day of fish and hold a slim lead over Brian McNanney and Mathew Rydberg of Sioux Lookout.

Rainy River upset Barwick 6-2 forcing the Knights into a game against Stratton on Thursday.

The Eagles lost their game to Big Island 19-8.

Manitou defeated Northwest Bay 11-5 and will meet first place Beef's Warriors.

Northwest Bay will play the Big Grassy Lightning after the Lightning lost their game to Sight and Sound 13-2.

The Borderland Soccer League's regular season has come to a close.

Boston Pizza tied the Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 1-1 in a women's division game.

Laureen Peters scored for B.P. while Jenelle Ferris scored for the Voyageurs.

Playoffs will be held next week.

Quetico Provincial Park will hold its first annual Quetico Crawl 5 and 10 K trail runs this Saturday.

Runners will follow the ancient French Portage, the one-time trade route of the Objibwe and Voyageurs.

Registration is open to anyone and is done on the day of the race at Dawson Trail Campground beginning at 8 a.m.

The Fort Frances Lakers have two veteran defencemen back with the team.

Connor Hady of Hermantown returns despite being a high draft pick in the North American Hockey League.

He had 5 goals and 17 points with the Lakers last season

Josh Scott of Fort Frances is one of six 20-year-olds coach Wayne Strachan will have on his team this year.

The Lakers also signed forward Ben Michaud who played high school hockey in Cloquet last season where he had 10 goals and 34 points in 19 games.

The team also announced the dates of its main camp for the upcoming SIJHL season.

It begins August 25 and runs through to August 27 at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Slo-pitch teams are still wanted for a tournament in Sioux Lookout this coming weekend.

Cost is $400 to enter with $2,500 up for grabs to the overall winner.

Fort Frances swimmer Donovan Taylor is back home following competitions at the Canadian Age Group championships in Montreal.

Taylor failed to qualify for the finals of any of the event he was competing in.

His best finish came in the 200 metre I-M where the was 18th fastest.

At the Emo Go-Kart track Friday, A-J Kellar won a heat and the feature in the novice class.

Jake Froemke won the other heat.

Wyatt Boyum swept both heats and the feature in the advanced class.
