Local Sports For Monday April 7

Fort Frances native Ryan Faragher has forgone is final year at St. Cloud State to sign a free agency entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

He has since been assigned to the Ducks AHL team in Norfolk.

In three seasons, Faragher had 53 wins and 5 shutouts in 98 games with the Huskies.



Former Fort Frances Muskie Joe Basaraba has found a home with the Florida's Panthers ECHL team.

He joined Cincinnati last week after competing his final year with the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs where he was part of the 2011 national championship team.

Basaraba was a third round pick of Florida in 2010.



An Atikokan player was among those selected in the OHA draft on the weekend.

Evan Krassey was an 8th round pick of the Niagara IceDogs.

Krassey played with the Thunder Bay minor Midget Kings this past year where he had 20 goals and 52 points.



It will be the Minnesota Iron Rangers facing the Fort Frances Lakers in the SIJHL final.

The Rangers advanced with a 3-2 win yesterday over Thunder Bay to beat the North Stars 4 games to 2 in their semi-final series.

The Lakers swept English River in four.

The final series is expected to start this weekend in Fort Frances.




International Falls Broncos girls track team captured a meet in Virgina Saturday.

Breanna Shofner in the 200 metres, Hailey Fentem in the hurdles, Savanah Olson in the shot put and the 4 by 200 metre relay team earning first place finishes.

Local Sports For Friday April 4

A four-goal performance from Miles Nolan paced the Fort Frances Lakers to a 7-2 victory over English River.

The win leaves them a win away from making a third straight appearance to the SIHJL finals.

The Lakers are up 3-0 on the Miners with game 4 going tonight in Ear Falls.

The game was also penalty filled in the final two periods with nine players being ejected.

Meantime, Minnesota and Thunder Bay hook up for game 5 of their series tonight in Thunder Bay with the Iron Rangers leading 3-1.



Scared Hitless and Bump it Up will play for the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League title next week.

Scared Hitless, who tied for first in the regular season,  reached the final by beating Gillons in the A-side semi-finals last night.

The 6th place Bump It Up got by Kiss My Pass, Alliance and then the Cougars for to earn its final berth.

Local Sports For Thursday April 3

The Minnesota Iron Rangers are a game away from reaching their first ever SIJHL final.

The Rangers beat Thunder Bay 4-3 to take a 3-1 lead in their semi-final series.

Game 5 goes tomorrow in Thunder Bay.

Meantime, the Fort Frances Lakers and the English River Miners resume their series in Ear Falls tonight.

The Lakers hold a 2-0 series lead.



Both games in the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League ended in forfeits because of a lack of players.

The Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes and the Main Street Mayhem both earning the "W's" as a result.

Local Sports For Wednesday April 2

A second place finish for the International Falls girls track team at the Little Amik Indoor meet in Bemidji.

Hailey Fentem won the 60 metre hurdles and was third in the high jump.

Breanna Shofner captured the 60 metre dash and third in the triple jump.

Lexi Erickson was second in the 1600 metre run and 3rd in the 800 metre event.

Amy Auron earned 3rd place honours in the 3200 metre run 

Savanah Olson and Emma Gilbert finished 2nd and 3rd in the shot put.



A member of the Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team has taken player of the week honours in the MCAC's northern division.

Gino Strebing of Tucson, Arizona went 5 for 10 at the plate, including hitting three doubles to help the Voyageurs to a split of four games on the weekend.

The Voyageurs are 5 and 9 on the season.



Atikokan Minor Hockey holds its annual meeting tonight.

It takes place 7:30 PM tonight at the Little Falls Recreation Centre.

Local Sports For Tuesday April 1

A member of the Fort Frances Lakers has been named player of the week in the SIJHL.

Miles Nolan scored three times in the first two games of the Lakers semi-final series with English River on the weekend.

The Geraldton, Ontario native shares the team lead in playoff scoring with Donovan Cousineau with five points.

Local Sports For Monday March 31

Fort Frances Esso Flames finished third at a girls hockey tournament in Winnipeg, beating the host Winnipeg Stars 5-0 for the bronze medal in the Pee-Wee one division.

The Fort Frances Leafs finished 5th overall in the bantam 1 division, beating the Stars 5-1 in their final game.

Local Sports For Friday March 28

Fort Frances Lakers will open their SIJHL semi-final series against the expansion English River Miners tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The Lakers lost just once to the Miners during the regular season.

That coming back in early December, but the Lakers have beat them in seven straight since.

Game time tonight is 7:30 PM

Six teams remain in the hunt for the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball Championship.

Scared Hitless, who beat Kiss My Pass, and Gillons Cougars who got by Alliance advanced to the A-side semi-final.

Kiss My Pass and Alliance bump to the B-side to play Bump It Up and By the Ball, respectively.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team is in indoor action in Rosemount, playing Fergus Falls and Rochester today as part of a cross-over tournament.

The Voyageurs opened play last weekend at the Irish Dome going 6 and 3.
