Local Sports for Monday September 27

This year's Rainy River Walleye Tournament has gone to a Baudette, Minnesota team.

Brian and Jim Ney's two-day catch of just over 24-pounds topped the 90 team field.

Dan and Gord Armstrong of Rainy River had the biggest fish of the tournament, weighing in at just under 9 pounds.



Fort Frances Lakers earned a split in their home-and-home series with the Wisconsin Wilderness, winning 5-3 Saturday at Ice For Kids Arena.

Tyler Stevenson tallied twice for the Fort while Phil Jennrich, Jace Baldwin and Davis Smith added singles.

Jennrich also chipped in with three assists for a four-point night.

Lakers lost 4-3 on Friday in Spooner.



A successful weekend for the Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team.

The Voyageurs defeated St. Cloud Tech College, Friday, in four sets, then placed second in tournament play in Grand Rapids, losing to St. Cloud in five in the final.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team team improved to 4-and-4 with a three-set defeat of Duluth Marshall.

That game played Friday night.



High school football say the Fort Frances Lakers fall 24-22 to Daniel Mac Friday.

Tyler Abma scored two touchdowns with Brad McDonald adding another for the Muskies who are now 1-and-2 in league play.



Four athletes and two builders were honoured Saturday night in Thunder Bay as the 2010 class of the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame were inducted.

Curling superstar Al Hackner, former NHLer Greg Johnson, BMXer Jay Miron and Olympic skier Dave Walker entered in the athletic category.

U.S. College coach George Gwozdecky and Fred Bragnalo, one of the founders of the Thunder BAy-based hall joined in the builder's category.



Fort Frances Taggs Source for Sports AA bantam opened their season with a 6-2 loss Saturday to Dryden.

Taggs will travel to Dryden next weekend for the rematch.

Local Sports for Friday September 24

Fort Frances Muskies court team split games played against Dryden to open the NORWOSSA season.

The senior girls basketball team beat the Eagles 33-19 while the junior boys volleyball team earned a four-set win.

The junior girls basketball squad fell 20-16 while the senior boys volleyball team lost in four-sets.

Today, the senior boys head to Kenora for a weekend tournament.



Falls High School swim teams earned a split in head-to-head competition with Mesabi East.

The varsity team won was its fourth straight, with Morgan Bruess leading the way with two victories of her own.

Relay teams picked up four wins.

The junior varsity squad was edged in points by their opponents with its relay teams earning three victories.



On the grid iron, the Fort Frances Muskies have their homecoming game today against Daniel Mac.

Game time is 3 p.m.

The International Falls Broncos are in Cloquet.



Fort Frances Lakers play their only road game of the month tonight in Spooner against the expansion Wisconsin Wilderness.

It's the first of a two-game home-and-home series with both teams at the Ice for Kids tomorrow.

Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team lost in a 3-sets to Central Lakes. by scores of 19-25, 16-25, 15-25.

The Voyageurs competed in tournament play this weekend in St. Cloud.

There are plenty of high school sports teams in action today.

Fort Frances Muskies court teams are in Dryden to faced the Eagles in their first NORWOSSA league games of the season.


The Falls High School girls swim teams are competing in head-to-head action with Mesabi East.

Kate Bondett of Fort Frances shot a round of 89 in helping Carleton University to a second place finish at a university tournament in Kingston.

Bondett's score was good for sixth overall in the individual standings.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 22

Fort Frances Lakers were held scoreless at the Ice for Kids Arena last night, losing 1-0 to the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The games only goal coming early in the second period.

The Lakers now prepare for a home-and-home series this weekend with the Wisconsin Wilderness.



Rainy River Owls court teams earned one win in games played yesterday in Kenora against Thomas Aquinas.

The junior girls basketball team defeated the Saints 38-15.

The senior girls basketball team lost 42-38.

Both the senior and junior boys volleyball teams were swept in 3-straight sets in their games with the Saints.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team dropped its third straight, losing in three straight sets to Lake of the Woods.

Scores were 13-25, 15-25 and 28-30.


Falls High School cross-country teams faced some tough opposition at a meet in Bagley.

Just three runners scoring top ten finishes.

Logan Veilleux's sixth place run helped the junior varsity boys team to a fourth place finish overall.

Alicia Hendrickson and Jaime Sjoblom were eight and ninth respectively in the junior girls varsity run.

The boys varsity team placed sixth with the girls seventh and the junior high boys were fifth.



A member of the Fort Frances Lakers has been invited to compete for a spot on a team that will participate in this year's World Junior A Hockey Challenge.

Netminder Jameson Shortreed will vie for spots on the western Canada team. at a camp next week in Penticton, the site of the World event.



Steve Arpin posted the fastest time during an afternoon test session at Kansas Speedway.

His lap time of 32.267 seconds, coming in at just under 168 miles per hour, was third fastest overall during yesterday's testing in advance an ARCA race at the track next week.




Rainy River Voyageurs' women's volleyball team returns home tonight following for the first time since September 1.

They'll face Mesabi East begin at 6:30 p.m. at Rainy River Community College.

Local Sports for Tuesday September 21

Fort Frances Lakers return to the ice tonight for a game against the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Ice Dogs lead the league in the early going while the Lakers are coming off their season opening win last Friday again the defending champion Fort William North Stars.

Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 7:30 p.m.

Local Sports for Monday September 20

Steve Arpin had his ARCA race at Salem, Indiana cut short by radiator problems.

The Fort Frances native was running second when Arpin says a rock went through the rad, a quarter of the way into race.

He ended up twentieth.


Fort Frances Muskies ended a 12 game-losing streak in the Winnipeg High School Football League with a 9-7 win Friday over the St. John's Tigers.

Colton Craig scored in the first quarter on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Tobijah Gerber.

The Tigers went ahead late in the game before a last minute field goal from John Colfer secured the Muskies first win since September 2008.

International Falls Broncos football squad dropped its second straight, losing 14-6 to Proctor.

Marcus Zawchenuk on a 36-yard passing play, scored the Broncos lone touchdown in the third quarter.


Fort Frances Muskies junior boys volleyball split into two teams for a tournament in Kenora.

The First squad lost to Kenora's Thomas Aquanis two sets to one in the championship final.

The second defeated Beaver Brae of Kenora in two to win the consolation side.



Fort Frances Muskies senior girls basketball team closed out a tournament in Thunder Bay Saturday with 28-17 victory over Thunder Bay's Westgate.

The Muskies went 2-1 during the tournament.

The junior girls basketball team went 3-and-oh at at tournament in Dryden, outscoring Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Atikokan by a combined score of 107-20.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team lost in straight sets Saturday to Mesabi East.

The Voyageurs falls to 3-3 in the MCAC northern Division.




Several runners from the Rainy River district participated at the Miles with the Giant Marathon in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

Meaghan Spooner of Fort Frances had the best finish among area runners in the full marathon for women finishing 25th.

Darryl Gannon of Atikokan was 10th in the men's half marathon whie Julie Slack, also of Atikokan was 27th in the women's half marathon.

Kyler Gannon of Atikokan was 4th in the men's 7-K while Kiara Gannon of Atikokan finished 4th in the women's 7-K run.

Margarat Gosselin of Fort Frances was 11th in the women's half-marathon walk with Rick Geurts of Atikokan 3rd in the men's walk.



Motocross racing wrapped up its northwestern Ontario schedule in Kakabeka Falls on the weekend with a few riders from the Rainy River district picking up wins and season ending trophies.

Kyle Dennis earned a win to finish the season in 2nd place in the 65 cc pee-wee division.

He also scored a win in the 85-cc division for seven to eleven year olds.

Elwyn Adrian finished second overall in the Beginner division.

Avery Adrian was second in the junior division and third in the youth class

John Gavel was second in both the Open and over 25 classes.



Fort Frances Canadians midget AA team will begin try-outs tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Players hit the ice at 7:15 p.m.



Rainy River Owls court teams travel to Red Lake for action in NORWOSSA's A division.

Local Sports for Friday September 17

Atikokan Voyageurs court teams swept games played against Pelican Falls.

The senior girls basketball team scored a 38-13 victory.

Both the senior and juniors boys volleyball teams both beat Pelican Falls in three straight sets.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team got back into the win column with a 3-set win over Vermilion last night.

Haylee Gates led with 7 kills and 4 service aces.

Danika Stelton added 6 kills, 3 aces, and 20 set assists.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team fell to Greenway in 5-sets.

Broncos led 2-1 before dropping the final two sets.

Sydney Gordon 22 kills, Mackenzie Raboin 57 digs and Katie Graves six ace services



Broncos cross country running teams competed at a meet in Eveleth.

The varsity girls team placed second on the strength of Amber Harms seventh place finish.

Ian Ducharme finished sixth in helping the junior high boys to a third place finish

The varsity boys also finished third with John Sobcznyski putting in the best time in eleveth.



Broncos girls swim team won seven of eleven events to outscore Babbitt-Embarrass in head-to-head competition.

Paige Herzig and Maggie West both picked up four wins, two individual and two as members of the 200 yard medley and 200 free style relay teams.

The 400 free relay teams also earned a victory.


Fort Frances Lakers open their second season in the SIJHL tonight with a game against the the Fort William North Stars.

Coach Wayne Strachan says the team is looking good heading into the game.

Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 7:30 p.m.

Local Sports for Thursday September 16

Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team dropped its second straight MCAC northern division game, falling last night to Hibbing in three sets.

Haylee Gates had 8 kills while Danika Stelton had 20 assists for the Voyageurs who travel to Ely toinght to take on the Vermilion Ironwomen.



Registration for the Fort Frances Vipers youth volleyball league takes place at the Fort Frances High School today.

The league is open to boys and girls in grades six through to 9.

Registration goes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with practices held every Monday night.



Registration is also being accepted for the Frog Creek Open.

It happens this Saturday at Kitchen Creek Golf Course.

Cost is $50.00 with registration made by calling the golf course.



The Rainy River Owls earn a lone win in junior girls basketball to open their season in the NORWOSSA "A" division last night.

The Owls defeated Kenora's Thomas Aquanas Saints 23-16.

Shauna Moen led with 9 points with Myan Miller chipping in 6.

The Owl's senior girls basketball team narrowly lost its game, 52-50.

The junior and senior boys volleyball teams were both swept in three sets in their games with the Saints.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 15

Atikokan High School court teams were swept by Kenora's Thomas Aquinas as the fall season in NORWOSSA "A" opened yesterday.

The Voyageurs senior girls basketball team fell 57-24 while the junior girls were beaten 23-13.

In volleyball, both the senior and junior boys teams lost 3-games to one to the Saints.

Today, Rainy River Owls court teams host Thomas Aquinas.




Falls High School girls' swim team was outscored in head-to-head competition by Chisholm yesterday.

Rylee Hooper in the 50 Free picked up the only victory.

Six other Broncos swimmers had second place finishes.

Local Sports for Monday September 13

Fort Frances ended their pre-season with a 5-2 win over the Wisconsin Wildermess at the Ice for Kids arena last night.

Blake Boaz, Jon Sinclair, Henry Gutierrez, Phil Jennrich and Byron Katapaytuk scored for the Lakers.

Derrick Peitsh and Tyler Ampe shared the win in net.



An accident early in the race hurt Steve Arpin's chance for a second straight ARCA series win at Toledo.

He ended the race sixteenth, 19 laps down.



Weather washed out the final scheduled races at Emo Speedway.

They will not be rescheduled.



The first ever Roller Derby game in Fort Frances saw the home team come out on the losing end against a much more experienced Winnipeg team Saturday night.

Winnipeg outscored Fort Frances 186-76.

The game was attended by about three-hundred people.




In high school football, the Fort Frances Muskies fell 26-8 in their home opener to Elmwood Friday.

The International Falls Broncos were beaten 43-14 by Virginia.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team placed third at a tournament in Grand Rapids, beating St. Cloud Tech College in two-sets for the win.

The Voyageurs beat out Vermilion and Northland in round-robin play before losing to Anoka-Ramsey.

In league action Friday, the Voyageurs lost to Itasca by scores of 22-25, 16-25 and 14-25.



Alex McDonald shot a round of 76 to lead the Fort Frances High School boys golf team to a second place finish at a NORWOSSA tournament Friday in Sioux Lookout.

McDonald placed second, 7 strokes back of the winner.

The Muskies were a combined 11 strokes behind Dryden.

Local Sports for Friday September 10

Falls High School girls swim team won its first head-to-head competitions, beating Eveleth-Gilbert by four points.

Winners included Morgan Bruess in the 100 Backstroke, Paige Herzig in the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 yard freestyle relay team.



Falls High School girls volleyball team fell in 3-sets to Cherry, losing 20-25, 19-25 and 16-25.

Sydney Gordon and MacKenzie Raboin finished the game with 15 digs each.



The Falls High School varsity boys cross country team finished second at the Roseau invitational.

Reggie Gordon had the team's fastest time finishing ninth.

The varsity girls team was fourth at the same meet, led by a 14th place finish by Amber Harms.

On the junior side, Ian Ducharme led the Broncos with a 4th place finish on the boys side while Shelby Wolden was second in the girl's race.



Fort Frances Lakers will look for another pre-season win as they travel to Sioux Lookout tonight.

The Lakers have not lost in three exhibition games played so far.



Fort Frances Muskies open their season in the Winnipeg High School Football league with a home game against Elmwood.

Game time is 3 p.m. at Muskie Field.

The Falls High School football team travels to Virginia.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team is back on the road in Grand Rapids to play Itasca.

The Voyageur's are 2-0 in league play this season, following a 4-set win over winless Northland Wednesday night.

Following their game, the women will compete in tournament play in Grand Rapids Saturday.


Steve Arpin will be sporting some new team colours at this weekend's ARCA series race in Toledo.

The Fort Frances native and his crew will be wearing pink and sporting a pink car in support of Breast Cancer Research.

Arpin has also launched an eBay charity auction to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.



The final weekend of racing at Emo Speedway takes place tomorrow.

Racing will begin at 4 p.m.

Local Sports for Thursday September 9


The Fort Frances Lakers won their third exhibition game in as many starts dumping the Dryden Ice Dogs 7-1 last night at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Tyler Stevenson paced the Lakers with three goals, including the game winner.

Byron Katapaytuk, Davis Smith, Matthew Caulfield and Jon Sinclair rounded out the scoring.

Dryden scored its only goal with 11 minutes remaining to break a shutout bid by Jameson Shortreed.

The Lakers end their pre-season action Friday in Sioux Lookout.



Three Fort Frances players have been named to a northwestern Ontario pee-week hockey all-star team that will again challenge for a provincial title.

Graeme Kitt, Cole Tymkin and Tyler Van Uden were among seventeen players named to the team following a selection camp on the weekend.

Evan Krassey of Atikokan was also selected.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 8

Fort Frances Lakers are back on the ice tonight for another exhibition game with the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Lakers beat the Dogs in overtime last week in Dryden.

Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 7:30 p.m.




The Falls High School Girls volleyball team ran its record to 3-1 with a 3-set win over Cook by scores of 27-25, 25-17 and 25-13.

MacKenzie Raboin led the way with 36 digs.

Sydney Gordon had 25 digs and 10 kills.

Brooke Graves had four service aces.



Falls High School varisty girls swim and dive team was out-scored in head to head competition by Grand Rapids.

Morgan Bruess in the 100 backstroke, Page Herzig in the 100 breaststroke along with the 200 yard and 400 yard freestyle relay teams earned wins for the varsity squad.

The junior varsity team was also beat by Grand Rapids.

Individuals wins were picked up by Jayde Hall in the 100 yard backstroke and Jenna Anderson in the 100 yard breaststroke.

The junior 400 yard freestyle relay team also captured its event.



Ray Smith and Bruce Black of Northwest Bay were this year's winners of the Labour Day Mixed Horseshoe tournament at Pither's Point Park.

They beat out Darwin Johnson of International Falls and Len Noonan of Fort Frances.

Sandy Larson of International Falls and Gordon "Chips" Calder of Fort Frances were third.

Fort Frances Legion, Sunset Country Metis and Labatt's helped out with the event.

Local Sports for Tuesday September 7

Steve Arpin used his experience on the dirt to win ARCA's race on a dirt track in DuQuoin Illinois.

The Fort Frances native took over the lead from Tom Hessert for the last 38 laps to capture his third win of the year.


A fourth-place finish in Saturday's feature was enough for Brady Caul to grab the Midwest Modified championship at Emo Speedway.

Caul finished the year 8 points ahead of John Hettinga.

Ron Westover won his sixth street stock championship while Glenn Strachan captured his first in the modified division.

Feature winners from Saturday were Mike Wilson in the midwest modified class, Brad Loveday in the modified and Tyler Wickstrom taking the street stock.



Fort Frances Muskies dropped a 20-12 exhibition game Friday against St. Norbert in Winnipeg.

Tyler Abma scored on a 3-yard run for the Muskies while Colton Craig added another touchdown on a 23-yard passing play from Tobijah Gerber.

The Muskies open their regular season Friday at home.

In International Falls Friday, the Broncos football team opened its season with a 20-19 win over Cloquet.



The Fort Frances Lakers won 5 to 2 over the Soiux Lookout Flyers Friday night.

Jon Sinclair with a pair, Tyler Stevensen, Jace Baldwin and Henry Guiterrez did the scoring.

Local Sports for Friday September 3

Falls High School girls volleyball team International Falls improved its record to 2-and-1 with a 5-set win over Littlefork-Big Falls.

The Broncos won the first two games, but dropping the next two before taking the deciding match 15-9.

Mackenzie Raboin led with 34 digs - Reva Renollet had 6 ace serves.



Falls High School cross-country running teams captured two team titles at the Babbit Lion's Club Gene Ritche Memorial.

Cade MaKay won the 4,000 metre run to help the boys' sophomore team to a title win.

The junior boys team had several top ten finishes to capture that title.

The varsity girls team were fifth in its division.


Falls High School girls swim team went head-to-head with Hibbing, with both the varsity and junior varsity teams being outscored in points.

Morgan Bruess in the 100 yard backstroke and Clara Wenger in diving, along with the 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relay teams picked up wins for the varsity squad.

Jenna Anderson in the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle relay team earned victories for the junior varsity team.



Football begins for high schools in both International Falls and Fort Frances today.

The Muskies travel to Winnipeg for an exhibition game against St. Norbert.

The Broncos host Cloquet at Bronco field beginning at 7 p.m.


Fort Frances Lakers continue their exhibition schedule in the SIJHL tonight with a home game against Sioux Lookout.

Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 7:30 p.m.



The final points night at Emo Speedway happen tomorrow night.

While Ron Westover in the Street Stock and Glenn Strachan in the Modified division have secured their titles, the race for the Midwest Modified title is still open.

Local Sports for Thursday September 2

Matt Caulfield scored two-and-a-half minutes into overtime to give the Fort Frances Lakers a 6-5 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs in an exhibition SIJHL tilt.

Mike Jourdain forced overtime for the Lakers with a goal 55 seconds remaining in the third.

Blake Boaz with a pair, Dan Chesser and Ty Brueggeman had the other goals.

Tyler Ampe had the win in net.

The Lakers are at home to Sioux Lookout Friday tomorrow.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team opened its season with a win.

They defeated Fond Du Lac in three straight sets 25-9, 25-13, and 25-16.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 1

Falls High School girls volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to Orr last night, losing in 5 sets.

The Broncos won the first two, but Orr rallied for three straight wins including a 15-11 decision in the deciding set.

Sydney Gordon led the Broncos with 31 digs and 17 kills while Reva Renollett had 30 set assists and and 5 ace serves.


Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team has its home opener tonight.

The 1-3 Voyageurs face Fond Du Lac beginning at 6 p.m.



Registration for Fort Frances Girls Hockey takes place today and tomorrow at the Memorial Sports Centre.

It goes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. both nights.

The season opens at the end of this month.

Another pro hockey team could be coming to Thunder Bay.

Ice Edge Holdings says it's in advanced discussions with the East Coast Hockey League for an expansion franchise to the City.

CEO Anthony Leblanc says the deal is contingent on Thunder Bay constructing a new arena.



The Falls High School girls volleyball team plays its first home game of the season tonight, facing Orr.

The Broncos opened with a road victory over Mountain-Iron Buhl last week.

Local Sports for Monday August 30

Dan Hettinga took the street stock feature as part of the Keith McNally Memorial Saturday at Emo Speedway.

It was Hettinga's first win of the season.

Points leader Glen Strachan was the winner in the modified division while Tylar Wilson claimed the Midwest Modified feature.


Steve Arpin was second at the ARCA series race at Chicagoland Speedway Friday.

Arpin started the race sixth.


The Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team placed sixth at a season-opening tournament in Fergus Falls.

The Voyageurs beat Riverland, but lost to Rochester and Hibbing in round-robin play before losing out to the host Fergus Falls in three sets, bowing 15-7 in the deciding set.


The first of two days of registration for Fort Frances Minor Hockey takes place tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre.

It's goes from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Registration can also be done on-line.

Registration for girls hockey goes later this week.



Terry Gill and Chad Hanson were this year's winners of the Morson Bass Classic.

They won with a two-day combined catch of 36.7 lbs.

Jon O'Conner and Alexis Wilcott were second at 34.7 lbs.

Local Sports for Friday August 27

Steve Arpin repeated his performance from a test session last week to post the second fastest time in practise for today's ARCA series race at Chicagoland Speedway.

The Fort Frances native was a mere three one-hundredths of a second off the time posted by Craig Goess.

He'll qualify later this morning with the race going tonight at 6 p.m. and can be seen on Speed TV.


The Falls High School girls volleyball team opened its season with a victory over Mountain Iron-Buhl.

The game went to five sets with the Broncos winning 15-9 in the deciding set.


The Sight and Sound Wolves have successfully defended their Rainy River District Fastball League crown.

The Wolves edged Barwick 4-3 last night.

Sight and Sound went through the playoff round unbeaten.


The Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team kicks off its 2010 season with participation in opening tournament in Fergus Falls.

The Voyageurs return with Danika Stelton, a second team all-star selection in the MCAC northern division last year and Cally Tinkess of Rapid City, Manitoba who averaged almost nearly 2.5 kills per game.

Katrina Wreggitt of Fort Frances is among several newcomers.



Racing at Emo Speedway resumes tomorrow with the Keith McNally Memorial.

Street Stocks will be racing for some extra cash and in honour of McNally who died during a racing incident in 1993.

Ron Westover enters with a 58 point lead in the standings.

Glenn Strachan in the Modified and Brady Caul in the Midwest modified division carry leads in their divisions going into this weekend.

Steve Arpin is on the track today for practise in advance of tomorrow's ARCA series race at Chicago.

The Fort Frances native posted one of the two fastest times in an open test session at the track last week.



It could come down to a final game in deciding this year's champions in the Rainy River District Fastball League.

Sight and Sound and Barwick play tonight for the league title.

A win by the Wolves, who have yet to lose in the lose in the double-knockout post-season format, will give them the title.

A loss will force another game next Tuesday.


High School volleyball begins tonight for the Falls High School girls team.

The Broncos travel to Mountain Iron -Buhl.
