Local Sports For Friday May 31

International Falls Broncos boys baseball team is now in a must win situation at the Section 7AA championship.

The Broncos fell 11-1 to Cloquet in Hermantown yesterday, knocking them into the b-side of the event.

They now scheduled to play Hibbing this afternoon in Ely.

Local Sports For Thursday May 30

Fort Frances High School will be represented at all-Ontario championships on two fronts.

The boys soccer team will compete for a provincial title after winning its third consecutive NorWossa crown in Dryden yesterday, beating Kenora's Beaver Brae 2-1.

Cam Gobeil and Tyler Ruppenstein scoring for the Black and Gold who now prepare for a trip to Stratford next week.



Some members of the Fort Frances High School track team will head to the provincial championships in Oshawa next week.

Jenny Hammond qualified in the 800 metres during the NWOSSA championships in Thunder Bay.

Arthur Van Ahel earned a berth in the 3000 metres.



Fort France Muskies girls soccer team not as fortunate.

They bowed to Dryden 2-1 in the NorWossa semi-final.

Maryiam Seid with the Muskies lone goal.



International Falls Broncos boys baseball team has reached the next round of the Section 7AA championship with a pair of wins yesterday.

Broncos opened the tournament in Ely with a 5-1 win over Greenway before shutting out Proctor 1-0.

They now face Cloquet in Hermantown today.



Some late scores from the Rainy River District Fastball League from Tuesday to report.

Big Grassy Brave thumped Manitou 17-0.

Couchiching blanked the Sabaskong Lakers 5-0.

Big Island out scored Dawson 12-9.

Stratton edged Barwick 4-3.

Rainy River shutout Beef's Warriors 8-nothing.

No score was reported in the game between Northwest Bay and the Sabaskong Cubs

Local Sports For Monday May 6

A championship title for the Fort Frances Vipers volleyball program.

The Vipers beat the Winnipeg Pirates in three sets to claim the under 16 tier two Manitoba Provincial Championship played in Portage La Prairie.

Hannah McLeod was named tournament MVP while  Cheyenne Lyons and Sierra Cousineau were selected  tournament all-stars.



Minnesota Wilderness have made hockey history.

The Wilderness defeated St. Michael's 4-3 in overtime Saturday to take the Dudley-Hewitt Cup, becoming the first American team to win the Ontario championship for the right to challenge for the Royal Bank Cup.



Fort Frances Muskies boys soccer team blanked Rainy River 6-0 in an exhibition game Saturday.

Brandon Sinclair had a  hat track.

Muskies open NorWOSSA league play Wednesday.



Dennis Ogilvie was the top finish of the Beat the Band 5K in Fort Frances, the only run to finish under 20 minutes.

Other age group winners in the men's divisions were Owen Riches, James Woods, Des Grant  and Ted Brockie.

Hailey Beaury was the top female finisher with Jillian Calder, Paula Vorght, Kelley Agar, Shelley Fairbrother, Connie Badiuk and Nancy Evans other female division winners.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team earned wins in two of three games played on the weekend.

They split with Hibbing Friday, losing the opener 9-6, but taking the nightcap 8-5 before beating Mesabi Range 20-9 Saturday.

The Voyageurs men's baseball team lost to the University of Winnipeg yesterday 11-5.

They have a pair at Itasca tonight.



International Falls Broncos boys baseball team blanked Mesabi East 2-nothing Friday.

The Bronco girl's softball lost 3-1 to the Littlefork-Big Falls, also Friday.



Falls high School track team cleaned up in Baudette Friday with both the boys and girls topping the standings.

Jason Pumper in the triple and long jump, Austin Rupert in the discuss, Nick Janttie in the shot put and the 4 by 200 metre relay team had wins for the boys team.

Savannah Olson in the shot up and discuss, Hailey Fentem in the 100 metre hurdles, Abby Kostiuk in the 400 metres, Lexi Owen in the 300 metre hurdles, Lexi Erickson in the 3200 metre run and the 4 by 100 relay team earned victories.



Falls Kart Club holds its meeting and registration night tonight at 7 p.m. at the philosophers club.

Race fee for families is 50 dollars and parent waivers are required for all racers under the age of 18.

Local Sports For Friday May 3

Some mixed results for the two high school badminton players from this area on the first day of the all-Ontario championships in Chatham.

Taylor Whitehead of Fort Frances High School won his first match in boys singles play, but dropped his next two to be relegated to the C-side.

Skylar Aprin of Rainy River High dropped to the B-side after lost her first game in singles play, but won her next.

Both player resume action this morning.



Minnesota Wilderness have finished first in the Dudley Hewitt round robin in North Bay following a 3-0 win over St. Micheal's.

The win also earn the team a bye into Saturdays final.



The Beat the Band 5K Run/Walk and Kids' 1K is set for tomorrow at the Sorting Gap Marina.

It's a fundraiser for both the Fort Frances High School Band and track team.

You can still register tonight at the High School from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Kids' 1K starts at 8:30 a.m. - the 5K begins at 9 a.m.



Update: Wins this morning from the districts high badminton players at the all-Ontario championships in Chatham.

Skylar Arpin advanced in the B-side of girls single with a win this morning, while Taylor Whitehead of Fort Frances High School is into the quarter-final of the C-division of boys singles follow his victory this morning.



There will be no soccer for Fort Frances Muskies teams this weekend.

Poor weather in Thunder Bay has forced a tournament there to be cancelled.

The Muskies are slated to open NorWOSSA play nextWednesday.

A pair of high school badminton players open play today at the all-Ontario championships in Chatham.

Skylar Arpin of Rainy River High School is competing in girls singles.

Taylor Whitehead of Fort Frances High is challenging for the boys title.



Minnesota Wilderness earned a 4-0 victory over Sault Ste. Marie to record their first win at the Dudley-Hewitt Cup in North Bay.

The Wilderness wrap up the round-robin portion of the tournament this afternoon with a game against St. Michael's.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team took a pair from Central Lakes, winning 14-1 and 7-5.


Update: Taylor Whitehead of Fort Frances has won his first match at the all-Ontario high school badminton championships in Chatham.

He defeated an opponent from a Toronto area school by scores of 22-20, 18-21 and 23-21.

Rainy River High School's Skylar Arpin faces an opponent from the Toronto area in her first match in singles singles.

Local Sports For Wednesday May 1

Minnesota Wilderness dropped their first game at the Dudley-Hewitt Cup tournament, losing 4-1 to the host North Bay Trappers.

The Wilderness face Sault Ste, Marie today.



Rainy River Voyageurs pitching ace Oashaja Dobie is a co-winner of the MCAC pitcher of the week award in the northern division.

Dobie allowed just one run while striking out 10 in the Voyageurs sweep of Itasca on the weekend.

Dobie leads the lead in era at 1.41 and strikeouts at 113.



The Voyageurs men's baseball team plays today in Brainard with a pair of game against Central Lakes slated for this morning.



Playing in just its second game of the season, the International Falls Broncos girls softball team lost 10-0 to Cherry.

Broncos are scheduled to play Littlefork-Big Falls Friday.



The Borderland Soccer League holds the first of two registration nights tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre from 6 to 8.

Cost to play is one-hundred dollars and players must be 13 or older.

Local Sports For Tuesday April 30

T.J. Bernard was the winner of the Relay for Life 5 K held in International Falls on Saturday.

He finished the course in just over 21 and a half minutes.

Dexi Maxa, who was eighth overall, was the first female to finish.

About 50 runners took part.



The Central Canadian Junior A hockey championship for the Dudley Hewitt Cup gets underway today in North Bay.

The Minnesota Wilderness, representing the SIJHL, have their first game against the host North Bay Trappers.

Local Sports For Monday April 29

Falls High School girls track team captured its first meeting of the season, taking top honours at the Mesabi East indoor meet on Saturday.

Abby Kostiuk in the 400 metre run, Hailey Fentem in the 55 metre hurdles and the girls 4 by 800 relay team all earned first place finishes.

The boys team was third with Jason Pumper scoring a pair of second place finishes in the triple jump and high jump.

Gary Harala was second in the shot put.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team swept a pair away from Itasca yesterday, winning 4-2 and 10-6.

Kendra Charrois belted a home run in the 4-2 victory.



The Rainy River Voyageur men's baseball team went 500 in games played on the weekend in Thief River Falls.

Saturday, they lost games to Hibbing 3-1 and Northland Community Technical College 14-6.

Yesterday, the Voyageurs turned it around to beat Hibbing 8-5 and Northland 10-8 in a come from behind effort.

International Falls Broncos girls softball team has finally been able to get on the field.

The girls defeated Lake of the Woods High School 11-0 in a game played yesterday in Baudette.

Weather and snow cover has forced several high teams to cancelled games until now.

Local Sports For Tuesday April 23

Fort Frances Lakers season has come to an end.

Jeremy Johnson's unassisted goal less than 2-minutes into the second overtime game the Minnesota Wilderness a 3-2 win over the Lakers at the 52 Canadians Rink, and their third consecutive Bill Salonen cup.

Kevin Kurm and Owen Stauber had the Laker goals.

Minnesota now advances to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup tournament next week in North Bay.

Local Sports For Monday April 22

Fort Frances Lakers have staved off elimination in the SIJHL final with a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Wilderness in Cloquet.

Wilderness still lead 3-games to 2 with game six going tonight at the 52 Canadians Rink.

Owen Stauber, Kevin Kurm and Jordan Christianson scored for the Lakers.



An Atom AAA hockey team, comprised of twelve players from Fort Frances, 3 from Dryden and one from Emo captured a tournament in Thunder bay on the weekend.

The team went 3-1-1 in taking the 10 year old division.



Steve Aprin was fourth in his first rally cross final, taking place yesterday as part of the Brazil X-games.

The Fort Frances native was 6 seconds back of the winner, Scott Speed, another first time competitor to the event.

Arpin qualified for the final after finishing second in his heat.



Falls High School track teams competed at the Beaver Relays meet at Bemidji State University where the girls team placed 5th and the boys

Lexi Erickson captured the Girls 3200 Meter Run.

Third place finishers were recorded by Maddy Filipiak in girls long jump, Savanah Olson in girls shot put and Lexi Owen in the Girls 200 Meter Hurdles.



Paragan was the winner of the Struchan Gilson Memorial Volleyball tournament played in Fort Frances on the weekend.

They beat Kiss My Pass in the final.

The Real Housewives of Fort Frances took third.

Stephanie Kitchkeesick of Paragon was named most valuable player.



Weather also a problem for the Borderland Racing Association.

It's pushing its schedule back a week with a workbee planned at the Emo track on May 11, practice on May 18 and the season opener taking place on May 25.

Local Sports For Friday April 19

Kenora Thistles have advanced to the semi-finals of the Allan Cup, beating Fort St. John 8-2.

Tom Biondich of International Falls had one of the goals for Kenora who face the host Bentley Generals tonight.



It's a pivotal game four in the SIJHL final tonight at the Ice For Kids Arena.

Fort Frances Lakers trail the Minnesota Wilderness 2-games to one.

The home team has won every game so far.



"Dig This" is this years champions in the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball league.

They beat Scared Hitless in 3 straight games for the title.

This weekend, several local teams will compete in the annual Struchan Gilson Memorial Volleyball tournament at Fort Frances High School.

A total of 15 teams are taking part, including some from Saskatchewan, Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay.



Poor weather is forcing a delay to the start of the Fort Frances Youth Soccer season.

It's being moved a week to May 6, ending June 27.

A wind up will still be held June 15.

Meantime the Association is still seeking coaches to coach teams in Division 2 and four.

Local Sports For Thursday April 18

Fort Frances Lakers again trail in the SIJHL championship final, after a 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wilderness in game 3.

Tyler Broderson gave the Lakers an early first period lead before the Wilderness scored twice in the second and two more in the third.

Game four goes tomorrow at the Ice for Kids Arena.



Kenora Thistles were whitewashed 8-0 by Rosetown at the Allan Cup in Red Deer, Alberta.

They need a win today against Fort St. John to stay in the hunt.



A couple of NWOSSA badminton championships for Rainy River High School.

Skylar Arpin went undefeated in senior girls singles in Dryden to win gold and advance to the provincials next month in Chatham.

Hayley Arpin went undefeated in junior girls play to take gold.

Shauna Moen and Logan Jackson earned a bronze in the senior mixed doubles.

Taylor Whitehead of Fort Frances High School will also head to the provincials after winning gold in senior boys singles.



Jessica Caul scored twice while Melanie Hyatt added another as Peters' Plumbing & Heating blanked Cater 2 U 3-0 in the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League

Leon's Fort France won by forfeit over Fit Lifestyles & Conditioning.

Boston Pizza was awarded a win by forfeit over Wright Physiotherapy.
