Local Sports for Thursday March 31

The Borderland Soccer League is warning there could be no season this summer.

The League will hold its annual general meeting in Fort Frances tonight.

It says the need to appoint a new executive and solidify its volunteer pool must first happen before any games can take place.




The Rainy River Voyageur's men's baseball team has captured both weekly individual awards from the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.

Tony Zelazny was named pitcher of the week while J.C. Crane and Michael Dickerson were co-winners of the player of the week honours.

The team is in tournament play this weekend.



Falls High School boys track team finished 11th overall at an event Tuesdsay in Bemidgi.

Jake Jensen had the best individual showing with a 3rd place finish in the pole vault.

Former Fort Frances Muskie Dan MacIntyre has signed on with the Rapid City Rush of the Central Hockey League for that team's playoff run.

MacIntyre recently completed a four-year stint with Bemidji State University.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 29

The Fort Frances Lakers season has come to a close.

The Lakers fell 4-1 in Dryden last night, giving the Ice Dogs the series win 4-games to 2.

Dryden and Wisconsin will now play for the Bill Salonen Cup.



Rainy River district badminton players took most of the titles during the Fort Frances Badminton Club's invitational tournament on the weekend.

Local Sports for Monday March 28

Isaac Keffer's Fort Frances High School rink has earned a silver medal at the all-Ontario boys curling championship in Thunder Bay.

Keffer's rink lost 5-2 to St. James of Guelph in the final Saturday.



Maury Nielson's Stratton rink earned a berth to the provincials of the Dominion Curling Club Championship by going a perfect 4-and-oh at a qualifying event in Kenora.

The provincial event will be held in Sault Ste. Marie next week.

Don Debenedet's Fort Frances foursome was 2-2 while Clint Taylor of Atikokan finished with a 1-3 record.

Val Stus of Atikokan was beaten out by Kenora's Lori Hoppe in the women's qualifier.



The Fort Frances Lakers return to Dryden tonight for Game six of their SIJHL semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Lakers won 6-3 Friday, but the Dogs still lead the series 3-2.



Former Fort Frances Muskie Joe Basaraba and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in hockey by upsetting Yale 5-3 Saturday.

They play Notre Dame April 7.



The Dynamic Home Hurricanes atom girls hockey team captured gold at a tournament in Winnipeg, beating the Dakota Lazers 3-2 in the final game.

Annalise Hayes, Jenna Clenndenning and Meaghan Degagne scored for the Fort Frances team.



Luke Skaarup of Fort Frances captured Canada's first strongman competition of the year in Winnipeg over the weekend.

Skaarup took four of five events to beat out fifteen other competitors from Western Canada, Ontario and North Dakota.

Local Sports for Thursday March 24

Fort Frances Muskies have officially been eliminated from any hopes of advancing to the playoff round at the all-Ontario high school boys hockey championship in Toronto.

The Muskies lost twice yesterday, 4-1 to St. Thomas of Villanova and 6-1 to St. Mary, to fall to 0-and-3.

They will end tournament play this morning against Holy Cross of Kingston.

Isaac Keefer's rink has started the all-Ontario high school curling championships in Thunder Bay on the right foot.

The Fort Frances High School boys team defeated Ridgetown 5-4.

They face rinks from Sudbury and London today.



The Northwestern Ontario all-stars were beaten twice yesterday at the all-Ontario bantam championships in Thunder Bay yesterday.

The Stars were blanked 8-0 in the morning by Hamilton then lost 5-1 to Ottawa Valley in the evening.

Brandon Bodnar of Fort Frances was in net for the late game.

The Stars conclude play this afternoon against Sault Ste. Marie.

Fort Frances Muskies lost 4-1 to St. Thomas of Villanova this morning at the all-Ontario high school boys hockey championship in Toronto.

Nick Kaun scored the lone goal.

They're back on the ice against the number one ranked St. Mary from Pickering this afternoon.

The Northwestern Ontario all-stars have been shutout for a third straight game at the all-Ontario bantam championship in Thunder Bay.

The Stars lost 8-0 to Hamilton this morning after being whitewashed yesterday by Mississauga 10-0.

They play again tonight against Ottawa Valley.

Fort Frances Lakers have got themselves back in their SIJHL semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Lakers stole a 3-2 win in Dryden last night.

All of the scoring came in the first period with Cody Hasbargen, Henry Gutierrez and Byron Katapaytuk notching goals.

Game four goes Thursday in Dryden with the Dogs leading the series 2-1.




Fort Frances Muskies are back on the ice this morning at the all-Ontario high school boys hockey championship in Toronto.

They face Toronto area school St. Thomas of Villanova at 7 a.m.

The Muskies lost their opener yesterday 7-4 to Mount Carmel of Mississauga

Local Sports for Tuesday March 22

The Northwestern Ontario bantam all-stars lost 7-nothing to Elgin-Middlesex at the all-Ontario championship last night in Thunder Bay.

Netminder Brandon Bodnar of Fort Frances came on in relieve in the third, giving up no goals.

The Stars opened the championship with a 7-1 loss to the host Thunder Bay Kings.

Bodnar took the loss in net in that game.

This afternoon, the Stars will face Mississauga.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team begins play this morning at the all-Ontario High School hockey championship in Toronto.

The 13th ranked Muskies face number 7 Mount Carmel of Mississauga at 9:30 CDT.

Local Sports for Monday March 21

Fort Frances Lakers find themselves in a hole in their SIJHL semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Dogs scored a 3-2 win last night at the Ice for Kids to take a two-nothing series lead.

Jaret Leclair and Tyler Stevenson scored for the Lakers.

The series shifts to Dryden for games three and four Tuesday and Thursday respectively.



An all-star team of bantam hockey players from northwestern Ontario begins play at the all-Ontario championship in Thunder Bay today.

The Stars face host Thunder Bay Kings this morning and Elgin-Middlesex tonight.

The team includes Brody McPherson, Carter Brown and Brandon Bodnar of Fort Frances.

International Falls Broncos boys basketball team's run in the Section 7AA championship has come to an end.

The Broncos were defeated 66-48 by Moose Lake in a semi-final match-up in Duluth.

Shawn Filipiak scored 15 for the Broncos.



Fort Frances Lakers begin their SIJHL semi-final series with Dryden tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The Ice Dogs held the edge during the regular season, winning 8 of 12 meetings with four wins coming at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The other semi-final series between Wisconsin and Thunder Bay also begins tonight.

The Broncos faces Moose Lake in a semi-final match-up in Duluth.

Moose Lake is on a 21-game winning streak while the Broncos have won 10 straight entering tonight's game.

The Fort Frances Muskies have been ranked 13th among the twenty teams competing and have been placed in the A-pool that includes top ranked St. Mary's of Toronto.

Play begins next Tuesday in Toronto.

The schedule has been set for the Fort Frances Lakers semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The best of seven series will open at the Ice for Kids Arena this Friday and Sunday before shifting to Dryden.





The Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team will be holding a youth baseball clinic this Saturday and Sunday.

The Rainy River Voyageur men's baseball team has ended its Florida trip picking up a single win.

The Voyageurs defeated Hibbing 8-1 Saturday before end the trip with 7-0 loss to Mesabi Range Community and Technical College.

Friday, the team dropped a pair of games to Minnesota SCTC 9-2 and 12-1.

Local Sports for Monday March 14

Another national title in women's hockey for the Rainy River Voyageurs.

The Voyageurs earned their 3rd ACHA Division II title in four years with a sounding 8-1 victory over West Chester of Pennsylvania 8-1.

Jesse Baker was named tournament MVP.

Stevie-Lee Langford, Brenley Anderson and Kayla Thorne were selected 1st team all-stars.



Fort Frances Lakers will face the Dryden Ice Dogs in the next round of the SIJHL playoffs.

The schedule has not been finalized, but the series will begin in Fort Frances.

The Lakers were narrowly edged by Wisconsin in the 1 vs 2 showdown that came down to a shootout.

Wisconsin choose to face the Thunder Bay North Stars in the semis.



Fort Frances Thunder Hawks lost to Kenora 4-3 in a shoot out Saturday night.



Two Northwestern Ontario all-star lost in the finals at the Hockey Northwestern Ontario Branch playdowns in Thunder Bay.

The bantam team lost 8-0 to the Thunder Bay Kings.

Both teams, though, advance to the all-Ontario championship to be played next week in Thunder Bay.

The pee-wee team lost 6-4 to the Kings.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Section 7-double A championship, beating Deer River, Saturday 72-65.

The Broncos will play Moose Lake Thursday in Duluth.



Two members of the Border Skating Club finished out of the medals at a provincial event in Mississauga.

Sophie Potvin-Begin placed 12th in the Junior Silver Women division.

Michael Nelson was 8th in Pre-novice men.

The Fort Frances Lakers have fallen behind in the second of a two-game total goal series with a 4-3 loss to Wisconsin at the Ice for Kids Arena last night.


The Wilderness rallied from three separate one-goal deficits for the win.

Henry Gutierrez, Tyler Stevenson and Byron Katapaytuk scored for the Lakers.

The final game of the series goes tonight.



The Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team begins play in the ACHA Division II national championship in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

They're facing the University of Connecticut.

The Voyageurs are the number one ranked team in the west.



International Falls native Dean Blais has been named coach of the year in the WCHA.

Blais coached the University of Nebraska-Omaha to a third place finish in its first year in Division I hockey.

Local Sports for Thursday March 10

Four players reached double digits in scoring as the International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Two Harbours 75-47 to open the Section 7AA championship playoffs.

Shawn Filipiak led the way with 15 points.

The Broncos will now face Deer River in a quarter-final game in Duluth Saturday.



The Rainy River Owls have ended their appearance at the all-Ontario high school senior girls A volleyball championship in Belleville.

The Owls finished last in their pool, losing all four games played at the tournament.



The Fort Frances Lakers and Wisconsin Wilderness begin the second leg of a total goal series tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The teams split games last weekend in Spooner, but the Wilderness outscored the Lakers 6-3 to take the opening round.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.



The Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team is back on the field in Florida.

They'll play a doubleheader with Hibbing.

The Rainy River Owls sensior girls volleyball team has been eliminated from any chance of reaching the playoff round at the all-Ontario high school A Championship in Belleville.

The Owls lost all three games played yesterday.

They end play this morning with a game against Toronto's Trinity College.



Members of Fort Frances High School's boys and girls curling teams are back home from Terrace Bay with NWOSSA medals hanging round their necks.

Isaac Keffer's team captured the boys crown to earn a berth to the all-Ontario championship later this month in Thunder Bay.

Tierzah Keffer's rink captured bronze on the girls side.



The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team was eliminated from the Section 7AA championship with an 81-31 loss in its semi-final game with Braham.

Hana Heibel led the Broncos with 13 points.

The boys team begins its playoff march with a home game against Two Harbours tonight.




The Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team dropped two more games during its Florida tour yesterday.

The Voyageurs were defeated 9-5 by Kings College of Pennsylvania 9-5 and 12-2 by Ohio's Mount Union.

They have an off day today.



The son of gridiron legend Bronko Nagurski, and a noted football star in his own right, has died.

Bronco Nagurski Jr. died of cancer Monday night in International Falls at the age of 73.

He played eight seasons with the CFL Hamilton Tiger Cats, including Greey Cup winning teams in 1963 and 1965.

He was twice named a CFL all-star.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 8

Isaac Keffer's Fort Frances high school curling team is in a fight for first at the NWOSSA boys curling championship in Terrace Bay.

Keffer defeated Geraldton 8-4 and host Lake Superior High School 10-1 to improve to 3-1.

That leave the team tied for first with Sioux Lookout and Longlac heading into today's final draws.

They play Thunder Bay schools Superior Collegiate and Westgate this morning.

On the girls side, the NWOSSA title has been won by Nipigon-Red Rock.

Tierzah Keffer's Fort Frances rink finished with a 2-2.

They beat Superior Collegiate 10-1 before losing 7-2 to the eventual title winners.

They rounded out the tournament with an 8-3 win over Longlac.




The Rainy River Owls senior girls volleyball team begins play at the all-Ontario high school "A" championships in Belleville today.

The Owls face Windsor and Welland in games this morning.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team will be playing for a chance to advance to the finals of the Section 7AA champioship in Duluth tonight.

The 15-12 Broncos faces Braham - a team that's lost only twice this season.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team dropped a double header to St. Cloud Technical and Community to open their Florida trip.

The Voyageurs lost 3-1 in the opener and 10-6 in the night cap.

They face Kings College of Pennyslvian and Ohio's Mount Union today.

Local Sports for Monday March 7

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team is heading back to the all-Ontario high school hockey championships.

Tyler Mosbeck's goal at the 12 minute mark of overtime lifted the Muskies to 4-3 win over the Beaver Brae Broncos last night in Kenora.

The win gives them the NORWOSSA/NWOSSA title in two-straight games.

Brendan Cawston sent the game into OT with his second goal of the game less than a minute to play in regulation.

The OFSAA's begin in Toronto March 22.



At the NWOSSA high school curling championships in Terrace Bay, Isaac Keefer's' Fort Frances rink is 1-and-1 after the opening draws yesterday.

Keffer defeated Sioux Lookout 6-4 before losing to Longlac 7-3.

On the girl's side, Tierzah Keffer of Fort Frances dropped her opening game 10-4 to Sioux Lookout.

Both rinks are back in action later this morning.





Wisconsin Wilderness took the opening two-game series with the Fort Frances Lakers with a 4-0 win Saturday, giving them a 6-3 edge in the total goal series.

The scene switches to the Ice for Kids Arena Thursday and Friday for the second leg of the one vs two showdown.

The winner will earn the choice of opponents in the semi-finals.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team has moved on to the semi-finals of the section 7AA championship with a 68-52 win over Two Harbours Saturday.

The Broncos will play Braham tomorrow in Duluth.



Joe Barron of Falls High School won the consolation final in the 50 yard freestyle at the State swimming championships held at the University of Minnesota.

He was also third in the 100 yard freestyle consolation final.

Alex Henningsen was 12th in diving.




A former member of the Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team has been recognized for her play in College hockey in the U-S.

Melissa Calder has been named to the NCHA all-academic team for a second straight year.

Calder is majoring in psychology at Marian University in Wisconsin.

Two Atikokan High School students finished out of the medals at the all-Ontario high school Nordic ski championships in Ottawa.

Erik Larson was 37th out of 160 skiers in the junior boys 5-k event.

Kiara Gannon placed 81st out of 150 participants in the junior girls event.



Game one of the NORWOSSA boys hockey finals begins tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The Fort Frances Muskies are up against Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.

The Broncos won three of four meetings during the regular season with one win in overtime and another in a shoot out.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.



The SIJHL playoffs begin for the Fort Frances Lakers tonight in Wisconsin.

The two teams are playing two two-game total-goal series with the winner getting the first right to pick their semi-final round opponent.

The Fort Frances High School Swim team has its first-ever OFSSA gold medal.

16-year-old Donovan Taylor earned the medal yesterday with a first-place finish in the 200 metre individual medley at the all-Ontario high school swimming championships in Etobicoke.

His time of 2:06.08 was also a qualifying National time.

Taylor also won a silver medal Tuesday.



Rainy River Owls senior girls volleyball team is preparing for a trip to the all-Ontario high school championship next week.

The Owls captured the NWOSSAA A title last week in a two set sweep of Nipigon-Red Rock.

The OFSSA's begin Monday in Belleville.

The Owls also won the NORWOSSA A junior girls volleyball title last week in Kenora.

Donovan Taylor has capture the first-ever OFSAA medal in swimming for Fort Frances High School.

The 16-year-old member of the high school's new swim team finished second in the 100 metre butterfly at the all-Ontario high school swimming championships in Etobicoke.

He was just a half second off capturing gold.

Today, he competes in the 200 Metre Individual Medley where he's ranked number one.





One of the Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams will seek a NORWOSSA title this weekend.

The boys hockey team defeated Red Lake 6-1 at the Ice for Kids Arena last night to advance to the finals with the Kenora Broncos.

Nik Jourdain with 2, Nick Kaun, Robbie Rea, Tyler Mosbeck and Davis Ross provided the scoring with Devon Stromness in net.

Norwossa Finals will open this Friday in Fort Frances.



The Muskies girls hockey team's season is over.

They lost 6-1 in Dryden which eliminates them from further NORWOSSA playoff action.

Shelby Tymkin had the lone Muskies goal.



Two Fort Frances High School curling rinks have captured NORWOSSA championships.

The girls team skipped by Tirzah Keefer and the boys team led by Isaac Keefer captured gold following two days of play in Sioux Lookout.

The mixed team skipped by Luke Esselink won Silver.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 1

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team has been forced to a third and deciding game in its playoff series with the Red Lake Rams.

The Rams surprised the league leaders yesterday with a 9-5 win in Red Lake to even the best-of-3 series at game apiece.

The deciding game will go tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena at 7:15 p.m.



The Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team needs another road victory if its to advance to the NORWOSSA finals.

The Muskies are in Dryden tonight with that best-of-three series tied at one win each.

They beat the Eagles in overtime Friday in Dryden to open the series.



Donovan Taylor will seek out a first ever medal in swimming for Fort Frances High School.

The 16-year-old is the only member of the high school's new swim team competing at the all-Ontario high school swimming championships in Etobicoke.

Taylor will compete today in the 100 metre butterfly and tomorrow in the 100 metre individual medley.

Unfortunately, no scores from yesterday have been passed on.



Fort Frances Lakers will open their SIJHL first round playoffs this weekend in Wisconsin.

Both teams will advance to the semi-finals, but will first play two two-game, total-goal series with the winner earning first choice of their second round opponent.
