Track Season Opens at Falls High School

The opening of the track and field season for Falls High School has resulted in a season-opener victory for the boys team.

The team finished first overall at Little Amik meet yesterday at Bemidji State University.

Jake Jensen paced the squad with wins in the 55 meter dash, 200 meter dash and Pole Vault.
Shawn Filipiak was first in the high jump with the 4-by -200 meter relay team winning its event.

Local Sports for Monday March 29

Two Fort Frances rinks have advanced to a provincial curling event after winning regional events in the Dominion Curling Club playdowns in Sioux Lookout.

Raymond Roy and his foursome finished first overall in the men's side while Kim Beaudry went undefeated on the women's side to earn berths to the provincials being held next month in Thunder Bay.


Lorne Jackson and his Fort Frances rink was eliminated Saturday evening from the Northern Ontario mixed curling playdown in Kenora.


Tirza Keffer's Fort Frances High School team was defeated in the quarter-finals Friday by Timiskaming at the provincial high school curling championship in Toronto.



Fort Frances Lakers were eliminated from the post-season Friday by Dryden.

A 3-1 win gave the Ice Dogs a 4-2 win in the best of seven series and will play the Fort William North Stars for the Salonen Cup beginning tomorrow in Thunder Bay.



Rainy River Community College's men's baseball team opened its inaugural season with a double header Saturday night at the Metrodome in Minneapolis against Western Technical College from LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

The Voyageurs dropped the opener 7-3, but rebounded for a 1-0 victory in the second.

Curling Update

Tirza Keffer and her Fort Frances team have advanced to the playoffs of the provincial high school girls curling championship in Toronto.

Keffer's rink defeated a team from an Oshawa school 7-2 this morning to finish second in their pool.

They're now playing Timiskiming in the quarter-finals.


Lorne Jackson's Fort Frances rink has earned their first win at the Northern Ontario mixed curling playdown in Kenora, beating Robbie Gordon of Sudbury 8-4.

Jackson faces the Kevin Brown rink of Kenora this afternoon.

Local Sports for Friday March 26

Tirza Keffer and her Fort Frances team will look for a win today that will put them into the playoff round of the provincial high school girls' curling championship in Toronto.

Keffer's rink defeated Nepean yesterday morning, but a 6-5 loss to Sarnia in the afternoon draw leaves them in second place in their pool with a 2-1 record heading into their final game this morning with Oshawa.

A loss could leave the team in a three-way tie for second and the need for a tie-breaker to determine who advances.

The Rainy River district is well represented at The Dominion Curling Club Regional playdowns in Sioux Lookout.

Arlo Jewell of Atikokan, Raymond Roy of Fort Frances and Bryan Bonot of Stratton are competing for the men's title.

Val Stus of Atikokan and Kim Beaudry of Fort Frances are vying for the title on the women's side.

Play begins today with the winners advancing to a provincial event next month in Thunder Bay.



Fort Frances Lakers will try to extend their SIJHL semi-final series tonight with Dryden into a seventh and deciding game.

Game 6 will be played tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena with the Lakers trailing 3-2.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.



Fort Frances Muskies boys' hockey team is expected back home later today after being eliminated from the provincial high school hockey championship in St. Catherines.

Muskies finished with a 2-1-1 record and tied with Woodstock for second in pool play, but Woodstock advanced to the playoffs based on a goals for-goals against differential.



Steve Arpin was the fastest overall in testing at Talladega Superspeedway this week.

Arpin's average speed during the two-day test hit 190.666 miles per hour.

Arpin will compete in an ARCA Series race at the track on April 23.

Keffer Wins Again

Tirza Keffer's Fort Frances rink remains unbeaten at the provincial high school girl's curling championship in Toronto.

Keffer's rink defeated St. Joseph's High School in Nepean 7-4 in a morning draw.

They're back this afternoon against a team from Sarnia.

Muskies OFSSA Trip Over

The Fort Frances Muskies play at the provincial high school hockey championship has come to an end.

A 9-2 win over North Bay this morning left the Muskies tied for second in pool play with Woodstock, but a tying breaking formula left the Muskies out of the playoff picture.

The team is expected back in Fort Frances tomorrow afternoon.

Local Sports for Thursday March 25

Fort Frances Muskies are in a good position to earn a playoff spot at the provincial high school hockey championship in St. Catherines.

Last night, the Muskies earned their first win of the tournament by beating Mayfield of Caledon 3-2.

Caledon led 1-0 after two periods of play before Chris Cousineau, Brendan Cawston and Nick Jourdain scored for the Muskies in the third.

Caledon rounded out the scoring with a goal in the final minute of play.

A win this morning over North Bay and a tie or loss by Woodstock puts the Muskies into the playoff.



Fort Frances Lakers are in a must win situation after dropping a 2-1 decision to the Dryden Ice Dogs last night.

Dryden leads the best-of-seven semi-final series 3-2 with game six tomorrow night at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Morgan McNeill scored the Lakers lone goal late in the third.




Tirza Keffer's Fort Frances rink won their first game at the provincial high school girls curling championship in Toronto with a 9-0 win over a team from the host city.

Her foursome plays teams from the Nepean and Sarnia school districts today.




The start of the Northern Ontario provincial mixed curling playdown take place today in Kenora with Fort Frances represented by a team skipped by Lorne Jackson.

His team, that includes third Kathie Jackson, second Todd Moxham and Lead Christine Sinclair are vying for a spot at this fall's national event in Burlington.

Muskies OFSSA Game Two

Donovan Cousineau's goal with two minutes remaining in the third period helped the Fort Frances Muskies earn a 4-4 tie with St. Mary's of Woodstock this morning at the Ontario High School hockey championship in St. Catherines.

The Muskies held the lead on three separate occasions on goals from Brendan Cawston, Matt Depiero and Nathan Calder, before St. Mary's pulled ahead in the second period.

The tie still gives the Muskies a chance to earn a spot to the playoff round, but will need wins in its final two games against school from Caledon tonight and North Bay tomorrow.

Be sure to stay tuned to B-93 this evening as well have live reports on the Muskies game against Caledon.

Fort Frances Muskies dropped their first game at the provincial high school hockey championship in St. Catherines, 6-1 to number 2 ranked Denis Morris from the host city.
Chris Cousineau score the Muskies lone goal late in the third period.
Wes Brown was in net for the loss with the Muskies outshot 35-26.

Fort Frances plays St. Mary's of Woodstock this morning, but may be without defencemen Jamie Kaun and Dustin Brown who both suffered leg injuries in yesterday's game.





Fort Frances Lakers will look to take a series lead in game five of their SIJHL semi-finals with the Dryden Ice Dogs in Dryden tonight.
The series is deadlocked 2-2 with a game six schedule for this Friday at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 23

Fort Frances Lakers will enjoy another home game in their SIJHL semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Lakers rebounded from a 2-1 first period deficit last night to defeat the Ice Dogs 4-2 at the Ice for Kids Arena and even the series at two wins each.

Justin Erhart, Cody Hasbargen, Blake Boaz and Henry Gutierrez scored for the Lakers.

The series shifts back to Dryden on Wednesday with game six back at the Ice for Kids Friday.



Fort Frances Muskies will open play this afternoon at the provincial high school hockey championship in St. Catherines.

Muskies are playing host Denis Morris High School - a team ranked number two.

Local Sports for Monday March 22

Fort Frances Lakers and the Dryden Ice Dogs resume their SIJHL semi-final series toniight at the Ice for Kids Arena with Dryden leading 2-1.

The Ice Dogs took the series lead Saturday night with a 4-3 win in double overtime.

Jordan Carne, Justin Erhart and Josh Scott scored for the Lakers who were outshot 60 to 40.

Game time tonight is 7:30 p.m.


Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team opened its season on the weekend going 2 and 4 at an exhibition tournament in Minneapolis.

They kick off their regular season April 6 in Fond Du Lac.

Carley Lake went 2-for-3 at the plate, belting a home run and driving in 4 runs.

Carley Lake and Kayla Rae McDonough both went 2-for-3 at the plate.

McDonough pitched eight innings for the loss, walking 6 and striking out 1.

Danika Stelton had a triple and drove in two runs whil Courtney Scholler went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's.

Chrissy Frasz pitched just a third of an inning giving up 10 runs before giving way to Kayla Rae McDonough.


Minnesota West 12 Rainy River 9

Carley Lake hit her second home-run of the season in a losing cause.

Kyla Thorne was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Kayla Rae McDonough scored 7 hits over 6 innings pitched, allowing only 4 unearned runs in the loss.


Itasca 8 Rainy River 5

Jessica LaRocque was 3-for-3 at the plate while Danika Stelton and Samantha Alberts each had a pair of hits.

None of Itasca's runs were earned with Kayla Rae McDonough pitching 7 solid innings, scarttering 9 hits for the loss.


Rainy River 13 Hibbing 1

Rainy River batter combined for 19 hits over five innings, including five doubles.

Courtney Scholler and Danika Stelton were both 4-for-4.

Chrissy Frasz and Carley Lake each hat 3 RBI's.

Kayla Rae McDonough won her second game of the tournament giving up just two hits.

Fort Frances Lakers will look to even their SIJHL semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs tonight in Dryden.

Dryden won the 4-3 in overtime in Wednesday's opener.

Games three and four will be played Saturday and Monday at the Ice for Kids Arena.


Lakehead University Thunderwolves begin play at the Canadian University men's basketball championship this afternoon with a game against British Columbia.

Fort Frances native Evan Woodland is an assistant coach on the team.

The game will be webcast on www.cis-sic.ca beginning at 1:30 p.m. CST.

Local Sports for Thursday March 18

Ben McClellan's goals 18 minutes into overtime game the Dryden Ice Dogs a 4-3 win to open their SIJHL semi-final series with the Fort Frances Lakers.

The Lakers held the three separate leads on two goals from Mike Jourdain and another from Justin Erhart, only to see the Dogs claw back each time.

Game two goes Friday in Dryden.


Lakehead University's men's basketball team heads to the national championship with a Fort Frances connection.

Evan Woodland is an assistant coach with the team that makes its first appearance at the national level in 33 years.

Woodland joined the ThunderWolves as a player in 2002, but an injury cut his playing career short.

He joined as a full-time assistant five years ago.

Local Sports for Wednesday March 17

Fort Frances Lakers and the Dryden Ice Dogs kick off game one of their SIJHL semi-final series.

The Lakers have not beaten the Dogs this season.

Heading into the series, Bryon Kakapaytuk and Jordan Carne lead the league with 8 playoff points.

Yesterday, the Fort William North Stars took a 1-0 lead in their series with Sioux Lookout with an 8-4 win.


An all-star team comprised of high school hockey players from the Duluth Area defeated their counterparts from the Iron Range area 6-4 in the first of a two-game series in Duluth last night.

International Falls' Willie Corrin had a goal in the game for the Iron Range team.

Corrin also won the hardest shot competition with a shot registering in at 93 miles per hour.

Jon McDonald, Matt Youso, Christopher Little and Jordan Christianson are other Broncos on the Iron Range team.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 16

The schedule has been set for next week's Ontario high school boys hockey championship in St. Catherines.

The Fort Frances Muskies are ranked eleventh and placed in a division that includes schools from St. Catherines, Woodstock, Caledon and North Bay.

They will open play next Tuesday against St. Catherines.



Playoff dates for the Fort Frances Lakers semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs have been released.

The best-of-seven series will open tomorrow in Dryden.

Games 3 and 4 will be played Saturday and Monday at the Ice for Kids Arena with the Lakers hosting a game 6, if necessary, on March 26.



Hockey Northwestern Ontario says it will ice a team at the 2010 Under-16 provincial hockey tournament scheduled for this August in southern Ontario.

The team is to be selected at a camp in Thunder Bay next month.

The selection of coaching staff is currently underway.

Local Sports for Monday March 15

Tyler Stevenson's second goal of the game 13 minutes into overtime gave the Fort Frances Lakers a 3-2 win over the K and A Wolverines and game seven of the their SIJHL quarter-final series.

The Lakers now meet the Dryden Ice Dogs in a semi-final series that begins Wednesday in Dryden.

The Wolverines forced the seventh game back in Thunder Bay after winning 6-4 Friday here in the Fort.




A couple of awards for Fort Frances Lakers’ netminder Jameson Shortreed.

Shortreed was named the SIJHL rookie of the year and the league's top goaltender.

Shortreed led the league in shutouts with 3 and his 43 games behind the net was the most played by any netminder played this year.




Fort Frances Thunderhawks opportunity to play for the Allan Cup was snuffed out yesterday after being disqualified from the branch senior championship in Kenora.

The Hawks were to play in yesterday's final against the Kenora Thistles, but were found by Hockey Northwest to have had an ineligible player on their roster.

The Hawks were replaced by the Thunder Bay Twins who were defeated 3-1.

An all-star team comprised of pee-wee hockey players from towns west of Thunder Bay will advance to next month's Ontario pee-wee championship in Perth after upsetting the Thunder Bay Kings 5-4 in overtime on the weekend.

The team includes five members of the Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals, including Tyler Van Uden who scored one of the West's goals.




Rainy River Voyageur's drive for a third straight ACHA women's division 2 title ended yesterday with an 8-1 loss to Northeastern University in the final game.

The Voyageur's advance to the final after a 4-3 win in Saturday's semi-final game against St. Scholastic that wasn't decided until the third overtime period.





International Falls Broncos boys basketball team was ousted from the Section 7AA championship by Deer River Saturday, falling 55-45.

Shawn Filipiak led the Broncos with 13 points.

Local Sports for Friday March 12

The Fort Frances Lakers are just one win away from advancing to the SIJHL semi-finals.

Last night in Thunder Bay, the Lakers beat the K-and-A Wolverines 2-1 to take a 3-2 series lead.

Game six will be played tonight - 7:30 p.m. at the Ice of Kids Arena.

Jaret Leclair and Byron Katapaytuk scored the first period goals while Jameson Shortreed stopped 44 of 45 shots to preserve the win.


Fort Frances Thunderhawks and the Kenora Thistles opened the senior hockey playdowns in Kenora with a 3-3 tie.

A.J. Tucker, Ross Johnson and Ian Lockman scored for the Hawks who play the Thunder Bay Twins tonight.

A win could put them into Sunday's final.


The Rainy River Voyageur's begin defence of their ACHA women's division 2 hockey title in Blaine, Minnesota with a game against Vermont this afternoon.

The two-time defending champions are ranked the number one in the west division.


Minor hockey playdowns are also taking place this weekend in Thunder Bay in the pee-wee, bantam and midget divisions.

A team comprised of players across the northwest, including a few from the Rainy River district, open the pee-wee side of thing this evening with a game against the Thunder Bay Kings.


International Falls Broncos boys basketball team advanced to the quarter-finals of the section 7AA championship with a 72-54 win over Two Harbours.

Trevar Carlson led the Broncos with 14 points.

The Broncos now face Deer River Saturday in Duluth.

Local Sports for Thursday March 11

It's come down to a best of three series between the Fort Frances Lakers and the K-and-A Wolverines.

The two teams resume their SIJHL playoff series in Thunder Bay tonight with teams splitting the first four games.

Game six will be played tomorrow night at the Ice for Kids Arena.


Fort Frances returns to an Allan Cup playoff series for the first time in more than 50 years with a game tonight in Kenora against the Thistles.

The ThunderHawks, Thistles and Thunder Bay Twins are playing in a round-robin tournament.

The winner earns the right to play for the Renwick Cup and a potential berth to the Allan Cup final tournament.

The ThunderHawks were 2-4 in six meetings with the Thistles this season with one of their losses in a shootout.


International Falls Broncos boys basketball team opens the section 7AA championship tonight at home against Two Harbours.

Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Falls High School.

A strong run for Steve Arpin at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday.

Arpin posted the third fastest time in a practice session for an ARCA race next month.




The Holmlund Financial Leafs are this year's winners of the Fort Frances Minor Hockey League bantam boys championship.

Last night, the Leafs defeated Canadian Tire 5-1.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 9

Tierza Keffer and her Fort Frances rink are headed to the Ontario high school curling championship.

Keffer won the northwestern Ontario girl's title this morning in Thunder Bay following a 6-2 win over Geraldton, leaving them as the only unbeaten rink.

The provincial curling championship takes place in Toronto beginning March 24.

Meantime Rainy River's girls team finished in a 3-way tie for third, but a tiebreaker left them placing fifth.

On the boys side, Rainy River tied for third with St. Ignatius, but a previous loss gave the Thunder Bay school bronze.



In girls hockey last night, the Norfab Flames peewee affiliate team beat the BDO Dunwoody bantam girls 6-2.

Jessica Coran, Amy Penner, Madison Weir, Amber Jourdain, Madyson Degagne and Myla Angus scored for the Flames.

BDO goals came from Katie Sinclair and Kassidy Ogden.


Steve Arpin is Fort Worth today for testing at Texas Motor Speedway.

Today's runs are to prepare drivers for an ARCA race next month.

Local Sports for Monday March 8

The Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team have booked a return trip to the Ontario high school hockey championship.

Muskies swept the Dryden Eagles in two games, winning 5-4 in overtime Friday and blanking the Eagles 3-nothing yesterday, to capture the NORWOSSA title.

OFSSA begins March 23 in St. Catherines.


There will be a game six in the Fort Frances Lakers series with the K-and-A Wolverines.

The Wolverines edged the Lakers 5-4 yesterday to even the series at two-games a piece.

Irv Lockman had a hat-trick for the Lakers with Morgan McNeill nothing the other goal.

Saturday, the Lakers won 4-2 on goals from Jordan Carne, Henry Gutierrez, Byron Katapaytuk and Jaret Leclair.

Game 5 goes Thursday in Thunder Bay with Game 6 set for Friday at the Ice for Kids Arena.


Fort Frances Taggs Bantam AA boys hockey team defeated Northend Flames 3-2 in the championship game of the a tournament in Thunder Bay on the weekend.


Isaac Keefer's Fort Frances rink fell short of a medal going went 2 and 3 at the Ontario Winter Games in Gravehurst.


International Falls Broncos boys basketball team closed out its regular season with a 69-64 home win over Deer River.

The second-ranked Broncos will face Two Harbours at home Thursday to kick off the section 7AA championship.

Local Sports for Friday March 5

Mike Jourdain's goal with six minutes remaining gave the Fort Frances Lakers a 1-nothing win over the K-and-A Wolverines last night.

The win evens the best-of-seven playoff series at one game a piece.

Jameson Shortreed stopped all 35 shots faced for the shutout.

The series now shifted to Fort Frances for games tomorrow and Sunday.


Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team host the Dryden Eagles tonight in game one of their best-of-three NORWOSSA final.

Each team won twice in head-to-head action this season with the Eagles winning the last two.
Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 7:15 p.m.


A high scoring affair in girls hockey last night.

The Fort Frances Leafs bantam team tied the Midget Pharmasave Wildcats 6-6.

Nicole Beadle and Hailey Clendenning had hat tricks for their respective teams.


Isaac Keefer and his Fort Frances curling rink opened the Ontario Winter Games yesterday with a 12-3 loss to a team from Toronto.

Play resumes today in Gravehurst.


International Falls Broncos boys basketball team closes out its regular season with a game against Deer River - 7:30 p.m. at Falls High School.

Play in the section 7AA championship begins next week.


Eleven bowlers represent Sunset Country this weekend at a provincial tournament in Timmins.

Shaye McCormick, Jonelle Haas, Brendan Morand, Amber Townson, Lyle Dolph and Natasha Petawanaqueb compete in singles play.

Brent Morand, Cole Trimble, Gavyn Debenetti and Josh Supinski make up a bantam boys team coached by Carolyn Stamarski.

Local Sports for Thursday March 4

Fort Frances Lakers dropped the opening game of their playoff series with the K & A Wolverines - 5-3 in Thunder Bay last night.

The Wolverines opened with a 3-0 before the Lakers tied the game on three straight powerplay goals from Mike Jourdain, Jordan Carne and Cody Hasbargen.

A late goal in the second period proved to be the winner for the Wolverines.

Game two goes tonight in Thunder Bay.


Fort Frances Canadians Midget AA hockey team ended its season with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Grand Rapids Junior Gold.

Jeff Gustafson and Chris Bobczynski scored for the Canadians while James Wallin and Brennan Carroll shared netminding duties.


In Atom girls hockey last night, the Rolling Lake Lightning defeated Kaemingh Esso 3-1.

Annalise Hayes struck the net twice while Lauren Hamilton scored the other one for the Lightning.

Scoring for Esso was Emma Noga.


International Falls Broncos girls' basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the section 7AA championship with a 56-37 win over Greenway.

The Broncos will next play Two Harbours at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Saturday afternoon.


The Ontario Winter Games have opened in the Muskoka Area with a number of Rainy River district athletes competing.

Skip Isaac Keffer will lead teammates, Cody Heyens, Cody Ossachuk and Ian Grant in curling.

Annis Seid, Shawn Brady, Angel McCormack, Anika Alexander and Kaitlyn Degagne compete in Squash.

Local Sports for Wednesday March 3

Fort Frances Lakers open a best-of-seven playoff series with the K-and-A Wolverines in Thunder Bay tonight.

The Wolverines won 8 of 12 games played against the Lakers during the regular season.

The first two games of the series will be played in Thunder Bay before the series shifts to the Fort this weekend.


Fort Frances Canadians Midget AA hockey team plays its final game of the season in Grand Rapids tonight.

The game, which starts at 7 p.m., will be followed by a dinner to be hosted by the Grand Rapids team.


International Falls Broncos girls' basketball team opens the secton 7AA playoffs at home with a game against Greenway.

Game time at Falls High school is 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos are ranked third.


More all-star honours for Bentley Hylton of the Rainy River Voyageur's men's basketball team.

Hylton is named to the all-state team by the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.

The sophomore was fourth in scoring in the north division, averaging 18.5 points per game.

Local Sports for Tuesday March 2

Five members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts had gold medal performances at a regional swim meet in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

13-year-old Levi Rittau led the way with two-firsts and 3-seconds in his age category.

11-year-old Adam Stromberg also won two twice while 10-year-old Anika Beaudry and 16-year-old Krista Emond picked up single wins their age groups.

As a team, the Aquanauts finished fifth overall.


Five members of Rainy River Community College's basketball teams have received all-star honours from the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.

Bentley Hylton, Dylan Clarke-Knaeble and Brandon Bell were named to the north's all-division team.

Dashondra Brown and Shawncinee Lay of the women's team were named to the north second all-star team.

There was a strong northwestern Ontario flavour to Canada's gold medal win in men's hockey at the Winter Olympics.

Sidney Crosby's overtime goal gave Canada a 3-2 win over the U.S.

The team included Chris Pronger of Dryden, Mike Richards of Kenora and Eric Staal of Thunder Bay.

Defenceman Duncan Keith played some minor hockey in Fort Frances before moving west with his family.

Head coach Mike Babcock was born in Manitouwadge.


Judy LaBelle's Fort Frances rink fell short in their bid for a provincial title by falling 9-2 to Sudbury's Vicki Barret in the final of the Northern Ontario senior women's playdown in Blind River.


Fort Frances Lakers ended their S-I-J-H-L regular season with a 4-2 loss to Sioux Lookout on Friday.

The Lakers will now prepare for a best-of-seven playoff series with the K and A Wolverines that begins Wednesday in Thunder Bay.


International Falls Broncos boys hockey team bid for a section 7-A championship was ended Saturday with a 3-1 lost to Hibbing.


Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team was swept in two games by the Beaver Brae Broncos of Kenora in their NORWOSSA semi-final match-up.

Yesterday, the Muskies fell 6-5 in overtime.

Jillian Langtry had two goals with Nicole Beadle, Danielle Jean and Shae-lynn Smith adding singles.


The boys team advanced to the NORWOSSA finals with an 8-2 win over Red Lake yesterday, sweeping the series in two games.

The finals start Friday in Fort Frances with the Muskies facing Dryden, who defeated Beaver Brae in their series.


Steve Arpin finished fifth in a rain shortened ARCA racing in Juniper Florida on Saturday.

Arpin, who led for six laps during the middle of the race, made ARCA history about 20 laps in when he became the first driver to take on rain tires.

Aprin is now tied for second in the ARCA points standings.


Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams ended their season without Minnesota College Athletic Conference titles.

The women's teams reached the yesterday's consolation final, but lost to Northland 73-55.

Forward Shawncinee Lay was named to the all-conference team.

The men's team was eliminated in the quarter-final round on Friday, losing 82-72 to Rochester.

Judy LaBelle's Fort Frances foursome have opened the Northern Ontario senior women's curling playdown in Blind River with a win.

LaBelle used just seven ends to defeat Thunder Bay's Barbara Ward 10-3.

Her rink is back on the ice this morning against Marion Clark also of Thunder Bay.


International Falls Broncos boys hockey team have advanced to the section 7-A championship semi-final with an 9-nothing pasting of Two Harbours last night.

Willie Corrin and Alex Bruess each had hatricks.

Mike Hart made 14 saves for the shutout.

Broncos now face Hibbing in Grand Rapids Saturday night for the right to advance to next weeks final in Duluth.


Playoff hockey begins today for the Fort Frances Muskies.

The boys host Red Lake in the first of a best of three semi-final - 7:30 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The girls a series with the Beaver Brae Broncos in Kenora with game two of the series scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the 52 Canadian Arena.



Fort Frances Lakers concluded their SIJHL regular season tonight with a game in Sioux Lookout.


Fort Frances Muskies and the Churchill Trojans of Thunder Bay open play today for the NWOSSA senior boys basketball championship at Fort High.

The winner of the best of three affairs will advance to the provincial championship.


Meantime the Broncos basketball teams continue regular season action with the boys team facing Duluth-Marshall in Duluth and the girls hosting Cloquet - 7:30 p.m. at Falls High School.


Rainy River Voyageurs will seek out Minnesota College Athletic Conference basketball titles in two fronts this weekend.

The 3rd ranked men's team plays Rochester in Minneapolis.

The women's team plays Anoka Ramsey in Thief River Falls.


Fort Frances plays hosts to a pee-wee girls hockey tournament this weekend.

Nine teams from Dryden, Kenora, Thunder Bay and International Falls will join local clubs Lakewood Tire Eagles and Super 8 in the event.


Judy LaBelle's Fort Frances rink is 2-0 at the Northern Ontario senior women's curling playdown in Blind River.

LaBelle earned her second victory this morning with a 7-4 win over Marion Clark of Thunder Bay.

Her rink plays another Thunder Bay team this afternoon skipped by Cristiene Hall-Teravainen.
