Local Sports for Monday January 31

Fort Frances Lakers remain in second spot in the SIJHL despite winning just one of three road games on the weekend.

The Lakers defeated the Clydesdales 4-2 in Duluth last night.

Ryan Wildman, Blake Boaz, Matthew Caulfield and Tyler Stevenson provided the scoring.

Saturday, the Lakers fell 5-3 in Wisconsin with Byron Katapaytuk, Phil Jennrich and Blake Boaz getting goals.

Friday the Lakers lost 6-2 to Wisconsin.



The Fort Frances Canadians midget hockey team defeated Duluth 5-3 to win the Grand Forks North Dakota Junior Gold Tournament.

Brandon Sinclair led the Canadians with a hat trick with singles coming from Abraham Germain and Garnet Paxton.



Fort Frances Snipers lost 3-2 in overtime to Baudette in the championship final of an Atom-AA tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Eric Pitkanen and Kendyn Faragher scored for the Snipers.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team finished fourth at the Pembina Tigers tournament in Manitoba, losing to Kenora's St Thomas Aquinas 4-3 in overtime.

Jillian Langtry had all three Muskies goals.



Lakewood Tire Eagles pee-wee girls hockey team defeated a Thunder Bay team in a shootout to win a tournament in Dryden.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team beat South Dakota State, 6-0 Saturday and 4-3 in overtime Sunday.

Brenley Anderson had a hatrick and Katie Stearns earned the shutout Saturday.

Jenna Brady scored Sunday's overtime.



Thunder Bay rinks skipped by Jeff Currie and Joe Scharf earned berths to the northern Ontario provincial men's championship in Thunder Bay after finishing a top the standings of a last chance qualifier in Atikokan.



More than 140 participants are taking part in today's start of the Arrowhead 150 Winter Ultra Race from International Falls to Tower.

Entrants will run, bike or ski the multi-purpose Arrowhead State Trail which, for the most part, parallels U.S. Highway 53.

Sunset Country Regional Figure Skating Results

Border Skating Club dominated the Sunset Country Region Figure Skating competition held over the weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The Club won by a landslide the Don Wilton trophy for the club with most points.

Skaters representing Fort Frances High School also took the high school team point trophy and the trophy for the highest points per skaters.

Local Sports for Wednesday January 26


Fort Frances Lakers scored twice in each period en route to a 6-1 win over the Sioux Lookout Flyers last night at the Ice for Kids arena.

Byron Katapaytuk with a pair, Jon Sinclair, Matthew Caulfied, Zach McCool and Jace Baldwin provided the scoring.

The win allowed the Lakers to remain 5 points back of league-leading Wisconsin who blanked Duluth 9-0.



A six-goal performance by Michael Bounds paced the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team to an 8-1 thumping of Ely last night at Bronco Arena.

Bounds scored the Broncos first five goals of the game, notching his final goal in third.

Eric Lassila and Brett Lucek added the others.




On the hardwood, the Broncos boys basketball team defeated Tower-Soudan 74-35.

International Falls Broncos girls basketball team defeated the Lake of the Bears 53-42 in a game played at Falls High School last night.

Action today sees the Broncos boys hockey team hosting Ely - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The boys basketball team is at Tower-Soudan.



Fort Frances Lakers host the Sioux Lookout Flyers at the Ice for Kids Arena 7:30 p.m. tonight.

The Lakers hold down second spot, five points back of league-leading Wisconsin.

Donovan Taylor dominated the pool at the Northwestern Ontario Regional Championship swim meet in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

The 16-year-old Fort Frances Aquanaut Swim Team member won eight gold medals and established two eastern national qualifying times to win the boys 16-and over Hi-point award.

13-year-old Levi Rittau hauled in seven medal, including 3-golds, 3 silvers and a bronze.

12-year-old Adam Stromberg captured a pair of golds, two silver and a bronze.

Donovan was also the winner of the Boys 16 and over Hi-Point Award and established 2 Eastern National Qualifying times

In girls hockey action over the weekend.

Kaemingh Esso atom team finished second at the under-10 hockey tournament in International Falls on the weekend, losing to Hermantown in the final.

The Rolling Lake Lightning finished third overall with a shoot out win over the Emo Penguins.




The Fort Frances AA Atom Snipers finished second in the B-side final of a tournament in Bemidji on the weekend, losing 3-1.

James Gushalak had the lone goal.



Falls High School sports from the weekend saw the International Falls Broncos girls hockey team lose 3-2 to Silver Bay Friday.

The boys hockey team defeated Detroit Lakes Saturday 7-4.

The Broncos boys basketball team won a pair of games, defeating Proctor 73-31 Friday then Two Harbours on Saturday 86-54.

Tonight, the girls basketball team hosts Lake of the Woods Bears - 7:30 p.m. at Falls High School.

The Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team defeated Hibbing Saturday 88-78.




Athletes from the Rainy River district gathered in the medals at the Ontario Winter Special Olympics held in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

Josh Wiens of Atikokan won three gold in cross-country skiing.

Clayton Fugate of Fort Frances won a gold and bronze also in cross-country skiing.

In snowshoeing, Terianne Caul of Fort Frances won a pair of gold medals.

William Hanlon of Atikokan won two gold and a bronze while Adam Wiens, also of Atikokan, took home two bronze.

Jace Baldwin goal in the shoot out help the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-4 win Sunday over the league-leading Wisconsin Wilderness.

Baldwin, Zach McCool, Dane Morin and Dan Smith scored in regulation.

Saturday, the Lakers lost 2-1 to Duluth with Jaret LeClair getting the lone marker.





Fort Frances Thunderhawks earned a pair of home wins over the Bottineau Lumberjack, winning Saturday 6-5 in overtime and then earning a 7-2 decision yesterday.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team blanked Red Lake Falls Saturday 6-0.

Colton Spicer, Jeff Gustafson, Davis Ross, Chris Bobczynski, Brendan Cawston and Robbie Rea provided the scoring.






Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team swept the University of Minnesota-Duluth 6-2 Saturday and 5-3 Sunday.


Brenley Anderson had a hat-trick in Saturday's game.


Courtney Shoeller repeated the trick Sunday.




Fort Frances Gillons Sharks won the Atom A tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre on the weekend, defeated Thunder Bay's West End Bruins 7-2 in the final.

Anna Lise Hayes and Aiden Morriseau each had a pair of goals with singles from Blake Jones, Kenny Brett and Joyce Brody.

Emo Canucks won the B-side final 7-5 over Keewatin.

Dakota Medicine had five goals.

Jacob Barker and Carter Robinson had the other Canucks goals.





Fort Frances Energy Fitness Wild defeated Kenora 3-2 to earn the bantam girls title at a tournament in Dryden.

Amy Penner had all three goals in the game.


Fort Frances BDO Stars was third in the same event following a 3-2 win over Fort Frances Skates and Blades.

Jessica Coran with two and Sarah Milling scored for the Stars.

Madyson Degagne got both goals for Skates and Blades.





Tim Nordin and Bryan Bonot rinks missed out on their opportunities to advance to the provincial senior curling championship in Fort Frances next month.


Nordin's foursome tied for second at a qualifying event in Thunder Bay, but lost in a tie breaker to Larry Chepsiuk of Thunder Bay.

Bonot's rink was winless in the event.





Steve Arpin was been selected the top Canadian Racer Competing at the Highest Level of International Competition by Inside Track.

He was presented the award at an event in Toronto on the weekend.

Blake Boaz's goal midway through the second period stood as the winner as the Fort Frances Lakers slipped past the Sioux Lookout Flyers 3-1 last night in Sioux Lookout.


Jon Sinclair and Jaret Leclair with an empty netter added the others.

The win moves the Lakers within two points of league-leading Wisconsin.









Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team won its second straight with a 4-0 blanking of the Lake of the Woods Bears in Baudette.

Danielle Jean, Sydney Jones, Shelby Tymkin and Shae-Lynn Smith provided the scoring.

Dana Cridland got the shut-out in net.









Christian Kittelson's goal 19 seconds left in the third gave the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team a 2-1 win over Virgina.

Mason Meyer had the other Broncos goal.



Fort Frances Canadians midget hockey team is on the road this weekend at the Dakota Premier Classic in Brookings, South Dakota.


The Canadians first game is tonight against the Huron All-Stars.







Two Rainy River district teams are in Thunder Bay seeking the right to play in next month's senior men's provincial curling championship in Fort Frances.


Tim Nordin, fresh off his win at a provincial men's curling qualifying event in Kenora last weekend, and Bryan Bonot will skip rinks at the qualifying event this weekend.


Top two teams advance to the Fort Frances event.

Fort Frances Lakers look to recover from a humiliating loss in Dryden Tuesday with a game in Sioux Lookout tonight.

The Lakers were hammered 8-2 by the Ice Dogs, snapping a six-game win streak.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team is in Baudette to play the Lake of the Woods Bears.



The International Falls Broncos boys hockey team travels to Virginia.

The Broncos girls basketball team is home to Eleveth-Gilbert - 7:30 at Falls High School.



The Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team was defeated by Vermilion Community College 95-93.

Derek Scully led the Voyageurs with 29 points.

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team earned a 2-0 win over the visiting Dryden Eagles last night at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Ryan Lundy and Tarran Romyn provided the scoring.

Scott Parsons needed to stop just 19 shots for the shutout.



On the hardwood, the Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team defeated the Lake of the Woods Bears from Baudette 66-51 in an exhibition match.

Justin Anderson led the way with 26 points for the Muskies.

The International Falls Broncos boys basketball team lost 70-50 to Hibbing.

Shawn Filipiak led all Broncos with 18 points.

The Fort Frances Canadians Midget hockey team defeated the International Falls Broncos junior varsity squad 4-2 in a game played at Bronco arena last night.

Tyler Fontana, Brett Bodnarchuk, Ryder Woolsley, and Brandon McGinnis scored for the Canadians who take part in a tournament in South Dakota this weekend.



Tonight, the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team hosts the Dryden Eagles at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.



At Falls High School, the Broncos girls hockey team travels to Baudette to play Lake of the Woods.

The girls basketball team is home to Tower-Soudan - 7:30 p.m. at Falls high School.

The boys basketball team is at Hibbing.

Local Sports for Monday January 17


Tim Nordin has earned a berth to the northern Ontario provincial men's curling playdown in Thunder Bay next month.

His Stratton rink went undefeated at qualifying event in Kenora.



Brenley Anderson and Jessie Baker each had 13 points in two games as the Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team swept North Dakota State, 15-6 Saturday and 12-3 yesterday.

Anderson and Baker each had 5-goal nights in Saturday's game.

Baker had four goals yesterday's while Anderson and Carlee Bosma each had had tricks.



Dan Smith’s second goal of the game, a minute into overtime, propelled the Fort Frances Lakers to a 3-2 win over the Thunder Bay North Stars Saturday at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The Lakers have now won six straight and are four points back of league leading Wisconsin.




Fort Frances Kennedy K-9's picked up the silver medal at a Bantam A hockey tournament held on the weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The K-9's lost 7-0 in the final to Westfort.

Fort Frances Canadian Tire was third with a 3-2 win over the Norwest Stars.




The Fort Frances Canadians midget team lost out in a semi-final game at the Wayzata Junior Gold Tournament over the week-end.

The Canadians fell 3-2 to Shattuck St. Mary's.

They play the International Falls Bronco junior varsity team today - 5:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team beat Dryden, Friday night, 3-2 in a shootout.

Jillian Langtry had both regulation goals, then notched another with Taylor Dixon to help the Muskies outscore the Eagles 2-1 in the shoot out.




Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball team earned bronze at a tournament in Thunder Bay, beating host-team St. Ignatius 72-52.

Justin Anderson was named to the tournament's all-star team.




Nearly 300 runners braved the cold for this year's Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard runs in International Falls on Saturday.

Kyle Smith of Wright, Minnesota won the 10 K event.

Top female finisher was Serena Sullivan of Hibbing who also the top female finisher in the 5-K run.

15-year-old Cameron Economy of Victoria, Minnesota topped all runners in the 5-K.

Local Sports for Friday January 14

Two Atikokan High School students were among the winners at a NORWOSSA cross country meet in Dryden this week.

Erik Larsen won the junior boys 6-km event. Bailey Morden placed seventh.

Grant Legaree was first in the grade 7 and 8 boys 4-km event.

Kiarra Gannon was sixth in the junior girls 3 1/2 km ski.





Tim Nordin's Stratton rink will be in Kenora today in a men's curling qualifying event.

The winners advance to next weeks inter-regional event in Atikokan.







Fort Frances Lakers will look to make it five straight with a win at home over Duluth tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.







Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team faces Red Lake at the 52 Canadians Rink in the first of two home games against the Rams this weekend.

Game time today is 4:30 p.m.

The girls team visits Dryden.

The Muskies junior and senior boys basketball teams are in tournament play in Thunder Bay.

At Falls High School, the Broncos girls hockey team plays Park Rapids - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The Broncos girls basketball team hosts Tower-Soudan - 7:30 p.m. at Falls High School.

The boys basketball team is at Babbit-Embarrass.







Steve Arpin concluded ARCA series testing at Daytona Motor Speedway, scoring the tenth fastest time yesterday.

ARCA opens its season February 8 at Daytona with Arpin racing against for Venturini Motorsports.

The Fort Frances Lakers have move into second place in the SIJHL with a 4-2 victory over the Flyers in Sioux Lookout last night.

Blake Boaz, Matthew Caulfield, Josh Scott and Henry Gutierrez with an empty netter provided the scoring.

The Lakers have now won four straight and are two points back of league leading Wisconsin.




Testing at Daytona Motor Speedway continues for Steve Arpin in advance of next month's ARCA series race.

Yesterday, Arpin posted the fourth fastest time in a morning session and ninth fastest in the afternoon.




On the local sports schedule today, the Atikokan Voyageurs court teams are home to Red Lake.

Local Sports for Wednesday January 12


The Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team fell 5-4 to the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints of Kenora at the Ice for Kids Arena yesterday.

Jillian Langtry, Katie Sinclair, Shae Lynn Smith and Taylor Dixon getting the goals for the Muskies.

Five of their 7 NORWOSSA losses this season have been by one goal.



In senior hockey, the Fort Frances Thunder Hawks doubled up the Kenora Thistles 10-5.



Glenn Walls needed to stop just 12 shots as the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team blanked Greenway 2-0.

Dominic Casareto and Beau Herzig getting the goals.



Fort Frances Lakers made a couple of roster moves yesterday.

The Lakers acquired forward Dane Morin from the Duluth Clydesdales for a player to be named later.

Morin, who had 16 points in 30 games with Duluth this season, is to be in tonight's lineup against Sioux Lookout.

Meantime, the Lakers also released forward Davis Smith.




Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team defeated Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos 69-38.

Justin Anderson and Josh Strain led with 15 points each.

The junior boys lost 35-25.




The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team lost 59-52 to Warroad.

Hanna Heibel led all Broncos with 16 points.



Steve Arpin's race season is underway.

Arpin is involved in testing at Daytona in advance of the ARCA series race in February.

Yesterday, he was second fastest.

Shawn Filipiak led the way with 15 points.

The 7-1 Broncos play Greenway tonight.

The Fort France Muskies girls hockey team takes on St. Thomas Aquinas in the Ice For Kids Arena at 7:15 p.m.

The Fort Frances ThunderHawks are playing Kenora at 8 p.m. in the 52 Canadians Arena.

The International Falls Broncos boys hockey team is at Greenway.

Local Sports for Monday January 10


Four third period goals helped the Fort Frances Lakers to a 6-3 win Saturday over the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The win, combined with Friday's victory over Duluth, moved the Lakers into third in the SIJHL.

Dan Smith paced the Lakers’ attack firing a hat-trick in the final frame.

Saturday, the Broncos girls hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to Brainerd.

Tyler Van Uden scored the game winner at the Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals AA peewee team defeated Dryden 4-3 in overtime to capture their own tournament on the weekend.

Van Uden also scored to send the game into OT.

Grahame Kitt had the Royals other goals.

On the B-side, International Falls edged Thunder Bay Elks 3-2.

Chase Bernard with two and Jordan Tilander with goals for the Falls.

And in the C-Side the Atikokan Voyageurs lost 3-2 to Sioux Lookout.

The Rolling Lake Lightning Atom girls hockey team defeated the Emo Penguins 4-2 to win a tournament in Kenora.




Fort Frances Muskies junior girls volleyball team split into two squads for a tournament in Kenora where they finished 3rd and 5th overall.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team won its third of the year with an 76-52 decision over Itasca Friday night.

A area man will be with a Thunder Bay team heading to the national junior curling championship in Calgary at the end of this month.

Mike Badiuk is part of the Cody Johnston rink out of the Fort William Curling Club that won the Northern Ontario provincials on the weekend.

Badiuk is the team's third.

Local Sports for Friday January 7


A five-goal performance from Jillian Langtry sparked the Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team to a 9-5 win over John Sauve High School in the opener of the Piper Classic tournament in Winnipeg.

Katie Sinclair and Shelby Tymkin rounded out the Muskies scoring with two each.

Dana Cridland got the win in net.

Muskies play St. Mary's High School this afternoon.



The Muskies court teams kicked off the new year with a split of NORWOSSA games played in Dryden against the Eagles.

The Senior boys basketball team defeated Dryden 59-30 with Justin Anderson leading the way with 20 points.

The juniors fell 40-21.

In volleyball, the junior girls team won in five sets while the seniors lost in three.

The volleyball teams are in Kenora today for tournament play.



At Falls High School, the Broncos boys hockey team defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 4-2.

Christen Kittleson with a pair, Alex Bruess and Joel Skirton provided the scoring.

The Bronco girls basketball scored a 76-43 victory over Virginia.

Jenna Vergel led with 18 points.

International Falls Broncos boys hockey team opened a two-nothing lead then clawed back with two goals in the third to beat the Fort Frances Muskies 4-3 at Bronco Arena last night.

Dominic Casareto getting the winning goal with Michael Bounds, Eric Lassila and Lucas Debenedet rounding out the Broncos scoring.

Brendan Cawston with two and Nikolas Jourdain replied for the Muskies.



Fort Frances Canadians AA midget team was able to salvage half of the battle of the border event by defeating the Broncos junior Varsity squad 8-3.

Canadians out shot their opponents 55-21.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team improved their record to 5-4 with an 82-37 win over Babbit Embarrass.

Hanna Heibel led the Broncos scoring with 18.

Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals AA peewee team took the D-side consolation of the Paul Bunyan International Hockey tournament in Bemidji over the weekend.

The Royals defeated Virginia 4-3 for their only win of the three day event.




The annual Battle of the Border between the Fort Frances Muskies and International Falls Broncos boys hockey teams gets underway tonight.

The game is being played at Bronco Arena

Elsewhere on the high school sports front, the Broncos girls basketball team hosts Babbit-Embarass.

The Broncos boys swim team is in Eveleth-Gilbert.

In Atikokan, the Voyageurs court teams host Red Lake.

The Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team is in Cloquet to play Fond Du Lac.
