Local Sports For Tuesday March 26

Dryden Ice Dogs defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 4-1 in Dryden to bite into the Lakers lead in their SIJHL semi-final series.

Alex Bruess notched the Lakers only goal early in the third.

Game four goes tonight in Dryden.



Dryden's Len Pelletier has been named the SIJHL's best defenceman.

No Lakers were nominated.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team lost its first games of the season.

The Voyageurs dropped a pair to Prairie State of Illinois, 5-2 and 9-1, then lost 3-0 to State University of New York.

Oashaja Dobie struck out 11 in the loss to State.

Last week, the Voyageurs won all six games played to open their season.

Local Sports For Monday March 25

Fort Frances Lakers can take a stranglehold on their semi-final series with the Dryden Ice Dogs tonight in Dryden.

The Lakers took the first two games of the series at home.

Meantime, the Minnesota Wilderness have a 2-0 lead on the Minnesota Iron Rangers with that series shifting to Hoyt Lakes tomorrow.



NAIT won the men's Canadian College Curling championship in Edmonton.

Fanshawe College with Cody Heyens as lead was third after losing to MacEwan in a playoff match.

Fanshawe took the women's title.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team split a series of exhibition games played at the Metrodome.

The Voyageurs first swept Hibbing on Saturday by scores of 8-1 and 8-2.

Reece Lanier had a no-hitter through six innings in the first game to earn the win.

Sunday, the Voyageurs lost both games to Central Lakes by identical 3-2 scores.

The Voyageurs continue their exhibition schedule this Friday with games against Anoka-Ramsey at the Metrodome.



Fort Frances Vipers girls volleyball team went winless at a tournament in Winnipeg on the weekend.

The Tier 2 team faced mostly Tier 1 squads but remained competitive, losing six of eight games played by just three points or less.

The Vipers are next in action in two weeks time.



The regular season for the Fort Frances Volleyball League has come to an end with the Gillon's Insurance Cougars topping the standings.

Notorious D-I-G finished 5 points back in second with Just Play capturing third spot.

Playoffs will be start April 4th.

Local Sports For Friday March 22

A four-goal second period sparked the Fort Frances Lakers to a 6-1 victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs to draw first blood in their SIJHL semi-final series.

Jacob Nolan, who was named SIJHL's most sportsmanlike earlier in the day, led with a pair of goals.

Tyler Broderson  Brendan Cawston, Kevin Kurm and Alex Bruess added singles.

Game two goes tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team opened its exhibition season with a 7-0 win over Anoka-Ramsay in a game played at the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount.



Confederation College has a share of the lead in both the men's and women's standings at the Canadian College curling championships in Edmonton.

The men skipped by Kurtis Bryd and the women skipped by Megan St. Amand improved to 4 and 1 following play yesterday.

Fanshawe College with Cody Heyens of Fort Frances as lead is tied for second in the men's standings.

Local Sports For Thursday March 21

Laureen Peters and Tanya Hughes each scored twice as Boston Pizza blanked Cater 2U 5-0 with the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League returning to action after a two week break.

Elsewhere, Kim Cousineau had both goals in Leon's Fort Frances 2-1 win over Wright Physiotherapy.

Peter's Plumbing and Heating earned a forfeit win over Fit Lifestyles and Conditioning.



Fanshawe College, with Cody Heyens as lead, split its first two games at the Canadian College Curling championships in Edmonton.

Fanshawe opened with a win over Thunder Bay's Confederation College before losing its night game to Sault College.



Game one of the Fort Frances Lakers semi-final series with Dryden goes tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Last night, the Minnesota Iron Rangers upset the Thunder Bay North Stars 5-3 to win that series in three games and face the Minnesota Wilderness in the other semi-final series.



Fort Frances Lakers Jacob Nolan has been named SIJHL's most sportsmanlike player of the year.

The 20-year-old from Geraldton accumulated just eight minutes in penalties while registering 12 goals and 38 points.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team opens its season with some indoor ball at the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount.

The Voyageurs have three exhibition games today and three more tomorrow.

Cody Heyens is playing lead for Fanshawe College's men's team.

Heyens is in his second year of the Manufacturing Engineer Tech program.

Fanshawe opens play this morning with a game against Confederation College.

Local Sports For Monday March 18

Kathie Jackson's Fort Frances rink has earned a trip to the Northern Ontario Provincial championship after capturing a regional playdown in the Dominion Curling Club Women's championship on the weekend.

Jackson's rink went undefeated in the event, played out at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

Paul Warkentin of Keewatin captured the men's side, defeating the Raymond Roy rink of Fort Frances 6-5 in the final yesterday.

The provincials take place in Sault Ste. Marie beginning April 4.



Fort Frances Canadians midget AA team is returning home as champions.

The Canadians won the Champions Cup on the weekend in Niagara Falls New York.

Abe Germain had the winning goal in the final.



Two regional all-star teams wound up empty handed in their chase for championships on the weekend.

The Northwestern Ontario North Stars Bantams lost 4-1 Saturday to Thunder Bay, losing the series in two straight games for a chance to advance to the all-Ontario championship.

The Stars pee-wees lost 4-3 Saturday to Thunder Bay, losing the regional title in two straight, but both teams do advance to the provincials being played in Thunder Bay next month.



International Falls Bantams lost in their bid for a state title, losing to 5-nothing to Wayzata Friday and 4-1 to St. Cloud Saturday at the Bantam B championships.



Some success for members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim Team at the MAN-SASK provincial championships on the weekend in Regina.

14-year-old Adam Stromberg returned home with a pair of gold medals in the 50 and 100 metre Freestyle events and a silver in the 200 metre free.

12-year-old Josh Cousineau claimed a bronze in the 100 metre backstroke.

Lydsi Jo Wilson reached the finals of two events while Regan Danylcuk swam in one final.

Local Sports For Friday March 15

A member of the Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim team has reached the final of an event at the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Provincial  Swimming Championships.

14-year-old Adam Stromberg advanced to the final of the 200 metre individual medley after scoring the 5th best time in the preliminaries.

12-year-old Josh Cousineau just missed out on reaching his final in the 200 metre I.M. with a 9th place.

Regan Danylchuk and Lyndsi Jo Wilson are also competing at the event in Regina that runs through to Sunday.



Several Fort Frances area players take to the ice this weekend for the Hockey Northwestern Ontario Branch playoffs.

The Peewee All-Stars, which includes nine members of the Fort Frances Canadians, will face off with the Thunder Bay Kings in Thunder Bay in a best-of three series.

Both teams will compete later in the provincial championships in April.

The Bantam All-stars are also in a series with Thunder Bay with the winner advancing to the provincial championship next month in Richmond Hill.

Five players from Fort Frances are on the all-star squad.



A regional playdown toward the Dominion Curling Club Championship gets underway this evening at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

Six rinks are in the men's division including  Raymond Roy of Fort Frances, Bryan Bonot of Stratton and Arlo Jewell of Atikokan.

Kathie Jackson of Fort Frances and Jackie McCormick of Stratton skip two of four teams on the women's side.

First draw is tonight at 8 and goes through to Sunday.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team picked up its first two wins of its Florida exhibition series, sweeping a doubleheader over  Toronto-based Etobicoke Rangers 4-1 and 6-4

They next play Illinois' Waubonsee Community College tomorrow.



The Northwestern Ontario North Stars all-star bantams and peewees play their first games in the Hockey Northwestern Ontario Branch playoffs against Thunder Bay in Thunder Bay.

Both pee wee clubs already have berths to the provincials being played in Thunder Bay in April.

The bantam winner will represent the region at the all-Ontario event in Richmond Hill.



International Falls Bantams will face Wayzata tonight to open the Bantam B State Championship in Woodbury.

A win advances them to the championship side with a loss dropping them into the consolation round.

Local Sports For Thursday March 14

Fort Frances Lakers wrapped up their regular season in the SIJHL with a 3-2 loss to Thunder Bay in Thunder Bay.

The Lakers now prepare for their semi-final series with Dryden.

The best-of seven series will open a week from today in Fort Frances.



Team Iron Range won Dick Stewart Cup after defeating Team Duluth 3-0 in a mini-game to decide the high school boys hockey All-Star Series in Duluth.

The mini-game was needed after Duluth won the series second game 8-5.

Lucas Debenedet of International Falls had two assists in that game.

The Iron Range squad, was coached by the Broncos Bruce Elson, won the opener Tuesday 6-4.



Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm was the first to finish the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Keith Aili of Ray, Minnesota was second.

Amanda Vogel, also of Ray was fourth in the 400 mile race between Grand Marias and Duluth.



Four members of Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim team are in Regina.

Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team dropped a pair of games yesterday to Waynesburg University of Pennsylvania to open its Florida exhibition series.

Voyageurs lost 7-6 in the opener then 14-nothing in the second.

They play a double header tonight against Toronto-area Etibocoke Rangers.

Local Sports For Wednesday March 13

Two from Ray, Minnesota, are almost six teams remaining in the John Beargrease Sled Dog race from Grand Marias to Duluth.

Keith Aili has pulled back to second, 20 minutes back of the leader Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm.

Amando Vogel is fourth as the teams completed the seventh stage last night.



Fort Frances Lakers wrap up their regular season with a game tonight in Thunder Bay.

No dates have yet been announced for the playoffs, but its believed the Lakers-Dryden series will begin sometime next week.



Team Iron Range stunned Team Duluth 6-4 in the first game of an all-star series featuring the best high school hockey from those regions.

Lucas Debenedet of International Falls had a goal and assist for Iron Range.

Game two of the series goes tonight in Duluth.

Payton Ruter scored two first period goals in helping the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-3 win over the Thunder Bay North Stars in Thunder Bay.

The win guarantees the Lakers will face Dryden in the semi-final round of the playoffs .

Colton Spicer, Tyler Brodersen and Miles Nolan adds the team's other markers.

The two teams meet again tomorrow in Thunder Bay to conclude their regular seasons.



Two sled-dog teams from Ray, Minnesota, are still in the running in the John Beargrease Sled Dog race between Grand Marias and Duluth.

Keith Aili, who led after the second stage, dropped to third while Amanda Vogel  increased a placing to fourth.

Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team heads to Florida for a series of exhibition games beginning tomorrow.

They opened their pre-season with a pair of victories over Fond Du Lac on the weekend at the Metrodome in Minneapolis 8-2 and 16-nothing.

Local Sports For Monday March 11

Fort Frances Lakers concluded their home half of the SIJHL season with a pair of losses on the weekend to the Thunder Bay North Stars.

Lakers were blanked 1-0 Saturday, after suffering a 2-1 loss Friday night.

The teams conclude their seasons with games tonight in Thunder Bay and again Wednesday.

The Lakers can determine who they want to face in the SIJHL semi-finals in their final two games with Thunder Bay.

A Lakers win tonight or Wednesday will mean facing Dryden.

They'll play Thunder Bay if the North Stars take both games.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team was defeated Saturday 75-62 by Deer River in the quarter-finals of the Section 7AA championship.



The Fort Frances Youth Soccer Club and the Borderland Soccer League are sponsoring a referee clinic to get more officials certified for the youth and adult leagues.

The free course takes place April 13 and 14.

Jon Carlson scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, as the Fort Frances Lakers came from behind to earn a 4-3 win over Dryden last night in Dryden.

Jacob Nolan and Merritt Rysavy notched the Lakers other markers.

The win helped extend the Lakers’ consecutive win streak to 11.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team has advanced to the next round of the Section 7AA playoffs with a 73-41 win over Duluth-Marshall.

The Broncos now face Deer River in a quarter-final game Saturday at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Local Sports For Wednesday March 6

International Falls Broncos girls basketball team's season is over.

The Broncos were trounced 91-30 by Braham in the semi-finals of the section 7AA championship.



Tonight the Broncos boys basketball team hosts Marshall in the opening round of the section 7AA championship.

Game time at Falls High School is 7 p.m.

Broncos, who went 22 and 4 on the season, are ranked number two in sub-section 2.



Fort Frances Lakers are on the road to Dryden to conclude its regular season series with the Ice Dogs.

Local Sports For Tuesday March 5

Fort Frances Lakers forward Jordan Christianson has been named SIJHL player of the week.

In three outings this past week the 20-year-old from International Falls registered seven points on a pair of tallies and five assists helping the Lakers skate to a trio of victories.

It's the second time this year that Christianson has won player of the week honours.



Playoff action resumes tonight for the International Falls Broncos girls basketball team.

The Broncos are in Duluth to face Braham in the third round of the Section 7AA championships.

Local Sports For Monday March 4

A weekend of championships for Fort Frances Muskies.

The boys hockey team scored a 4-0 win Friday to take that two-game total goal series over Kenora's Thomas Aquinas.

Yesterday, the girls team beat Beaver Brae 5-1 in their final, it's first-ever title.

Shelby Timkin, Clare Sandelovich, Amber Jourdain, Hailey Clendenning and Katie Sinclair with goals.

Katie Parsons in net for the win.

On the hardwood, the Muskies boys team defeated Red Lake 74-72 to win the senior basketball crown.

The juniors boys score a 31-22 win over Beaver Brae in their championship.

In girls volleyball, the Muskies lost to Thomas Aquinas in the junior girls final while the seniors lost to Dryden in the semi-finals.

Rainy River Owl seniors were also beaten in the semi by Thomas Aquinas.



A thrilling, but disappointing end to the Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team's season.

The Voyageurs and Northland Community College went to double overtime in the MCAC Region 13-B championship with Northland coming out on top 81-78.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team has reached the third round of the Section 7AA championship with a 74-50 win over Virginia Saturday.

Broncos face Braham tomorrow in Duluth.



International Falls Bantams earned a trip to the State Championship after gaining the 2nd seed at the Minnesota Hockey Bantam B North Region Tournament in Crookston.

The State tournament will be held in St. Paul March 16.



Fort Frances Lakers won its 10th straight Saturday in the SIJHL with a 5-2 win over Dryden.



Fort Frances Lakers netminder Talor Joseph has been named SIJHL player of the month.

The 18-year-old from Alberta was a perfect 7-and-oh with a goals against average of just under 3 in February.



Borderland teams cleaned up at a pee wee hockey tournament in Emo on the weekend.

The host Emo Express claimed the championship with a 2-0 win over Baudette.

The Fort Frances Firemen outlasted the Fort Frances Predators 5-4 in a length shoot out for the B-side win.

Fort France Lions took the C-side with a 5-0 win over Kenora.

International Falls won the D-side, blanking Atikokan 7-nothing.

Local Sports For Friday March 1

The Northland Cup boys hockey championship will be decided tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Fort Frances Muskies and the Thomas Aquinas Saints of Kenora skated to a 4-4 draw in the two-game total goal series opener Tuesday in Kenora.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team concludes its regular season with a game in Deer River.

They will open their Section 7AA playoff schedule Wednesday.



Several all-star honours for members of the Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams.

Jeff Romeus and Joshua Pierre were both named to the men's MCAC's all northern team.

Kai Washington and Teaira Martin were selected first-team all-stars in the women's division.



Kids snowmobile racing is returning to the Borderland.

The Kids Championship Power Racing Organization of North East Minnesota will hold an ice oval snowmobile race March 9 at Thunderbird Lodge, east of International Falls on Rainy Lake.

Competitors range in ages from 4 to 14 in various categories.

Local Sports For Thursday February 28

Fort Frances Lakers  goaltender Talor Joseph stopped 48 of 51 shots, and all three in the shootout as the Lakers defeated the Minnesota Wilderness 4-3.

The win extended the Lakers win streak to 9 games while stopped the Wilderness' 17-game run.

Colton Spicer, Jon Carlson and Jordan Christianson scored in regulation time with Spicer notching the only goal in the shoot out to give the Lakers the win.



Fort Frances has drawn first blood in the Northland Cup girls hockey championship.

The Muskies blanked Beaver Brae 1-0 last night.

Game two in the two-game total goal series goes Sunday afternoon in Kenora.



In the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League, Leon's Fort Frances scored a 2-1 win over Cater 2-U

Mary Waghorn and Erin Gustafson scored for Leons while Ayssa Holliday replied for Cater 2-U

Elsewhere, Boston Pizza was force to forfeit its game to Peters' Plumbing and Heating, ending an 8-game win streak.

Wright Physiotherapy defeated Fit Lifestyles & Conditioning 6-3.

Christine Borden and Rebecca Selman each notched a pair of goals for Wright's.

Jessica Wilson had two for FITS in a losing caused.


International Falls Broncos girls basketball team defeated Deer River 74-50 to advance to the second round of the Section 7AA championship.

The Broncos now face Virginia Saturday in Duluth.



Registration for the Fort Frances Vipers under 14 volleyball team goes tonight.

It take place at the Fort Frances High School from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

First 16 girls will be accepted.

Cost is 50-dollars.



Another huge medal haul for skaters with the Borderland Skating Club.

The club participate in an event last weekend in Thunder Bay.

A total of fourteen skater returned home with multi-medals

Sophie Potvin-Begin, Joleigh Hayes and Kaylyn Levesque each came away with a couple of first place finishes.

Local Sports For Wednesday February 27

A power play goal from Owen Stauber with under three minutes remaining gave the Fort Frances Lakers a 5-4 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs at the Memorial Sports Centre last night.

It's the Lakers fourth straight win over the Dogs.

Colton Spicer had two goals and two assists while Merrit Rysavy also had a four-point night with a goal and three assists.

The Lakers are in Cloquet tonight to face the Minnesota Wilderness.



First game of the Northland Cup boys hockey final has resolved nothing.

Fort Frances Muskies and the Thomas Aquinas Saints of Kenora skated to a 4-4 draw last night in Kenora.

Game two of the two-game total goal series takes place Friday at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Meantime, the Muskies girls team will open its finals with the Beaver Brae Bronco tonight on home ice.

Game two is Sunday in Kenora.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Mesabi East 69-41.

The girls team will host Deer River tonight - 7 p.m. at Falls High School - in a first round game of the Section 7AA championship.

Local Sports For Tuesday February 26

A local soccer sensation will be honing her skills at the University level.

Jess Caul has signed a letter of intent to play for Providence University in Otterburne, Manitoba, located about 25 miles southwest of Steinback.

Caul will practice with the University on a monthly bases before starting classes there this September.

Caul currently leads the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League in scoring.



A number of former Fort Frances Lakers are part of a national champion team.

Goalie Tyler Ampe, defenceman Steve Terry and forwards Henry Gutierrez, Dwight Lee and Ryan Presthus were part of the Williston State Tetons that claimed the NJCAA title on the weekend.

Former Lakers captains Tyler Stevenson and Blake Boaz are hoping for similar good fate as they compete with the Concordia Thunder who reached the ACAC semi-finals on the weekend.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team is into the finals for the Northland Cup Series.

They defeated Dryden last night 5-1 in a one-game semi-final series.

They'll face the Beaver Brae Broncos in a two-game total goal showdown tomorrow at the Ice for Kids Arena and Sunday in Kenora.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team tangles with the Thomas Aquinas Saints in Kenora in the first of a two-game total goal series for its Northland Cup championship.

The second game will be played at the Memorial Sports Centre Friday night.



There will be no representation from NorWossa at provincial championships for hockey this year.

It appears a deadline to apply for participation in the provincial championships has passed.

Fort Frances Muskies seasons will end with the conclusion of the boys and girls hockey finals this weekend.

Local Sports For Monday February 25

Fort Frances Muskies ended the Female World Sport School Challenge in Winnipeg with a 5-2 loss to Banff Hockey Academy in the 7th place game.

Shilo Beck and Jessica Coran scored for the Muskies who went winless in the event.

The Muskies are scheduled to face Dryden tonight in playoff action for the Northland Cup.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team is into the finals of its Northland series after a 4-0 win Saturday against Kenora's Beaver Brae.

The Muskies will face Thomas Aquinas of Kenora for a two-game total goal final.

First game goes tomorrow night in Kenora with the second being played at the Memorial Sports Centre Friday night.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team split games played against the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Voyageurs lost Saturday's opener 4-3 with Janet Scherrer scoring twice.

Yesterday, Taylor Dixon notched a hat trick as Rainy River blanked their guests 6-0.



Fort Frances Canadians AA peewee team went undefeated on the weekend.

In league play yesterday in Sioux Lookout, the Canadians earned a 1-1 tie with Dryden and a 6-3 win over the host Flyers.

Friday night, they defeated the International Falls Broncos junior varsity squad 4-1 in an exhibition game played in the Falls.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team had its season end Saturday with a 4-0 loss to Duluth-Denfeld in a section 7A semi-final game.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Duluth-Marshall Saturday 80-62.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team scored a 96-70 win over Fond Du Lac on Saturday.



Fort Frances Muskies junior girls volleyball team came away with a strong performance at the second stage of play in the Northland Series Cup held in Kenora.

The girls beat Dryden and Ignace and split games with Sioux Lookout, but lost both played against Kenora's Thomas Aquinas.

The final of the three tournaments for the Cup goes in Dryden this Saturday.

Local Sports For Friday February 22

Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey dropped its first game at the inaugural Female World Sport School Challenge taking place in Winnipeg.

Muskies lost to St. Mary's Academy 4-0.

They'll play later today against a school from Okanagan, B.C.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team has advanced to the semi-finals of the section 7A championships with a 5-3 win over Virginia, on the strength of a four-goal performance by Lucas Debenedet.

The Broncos will now face Duluth-Denfeld tomorrow afternoon in Hibbing.



The Broncos boys basketball team was also victorious, defeated Aitkin 64-47.




Fort Frances Muskies girls team is 0-2 at the Female World Sport School Challenge in Winnipeg.

The Muskies lost 6-0 to  Okanagan Hockey Academy of British Columbia this morning.

They will play their final preliminary game tonight against Edge School for Athletes of Alberta.



Fort Frances Lakers are on home ice tonight in a game against Dryden.

It's a rematch from Wednesday's game, won by the Lakers in Dryden.

A pair of goals from Merritt Rysavy paced the Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-2 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs in Dryden.

Kevin Kurm and Simon Desrosiers add the others Laker goals.

The win moves the Fort six points up on the Dogs in the race for second place.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball team again split games, this time in Ely.

The women beat Vermillion Community College 69-59.

The men fell 88-71 to Vermillion.



In the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League, Jess Caul added to her league-leading total with four goals in helping Peter's Plumbing and Heating to a 6-5 win over Wright Physiotherapy.

Heather Wright had three goals in a losing cause for Wright's.

Alyssa Holliday notched a hat trick as Cater 2-U beat Fit Lifestyles and Condition 4-3

Boston Pizza edged out Leon's Fort Frances 4-3.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey has dropped its first game at the inaugural Female World Sport School Challenge taking place in Winnipeg.

Muskies lost to St. Mary's Academy 4-0.

They'll play again tomorrow against Okanagan, B.C.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team will begin its playoffs tonight.

They're in Virginia for a first round game in the Section 7A championship.

Broncos are ranked 5th in the tournament.

Local Sports For Wednesday February 20

International Falls Broncos basketball teams split games with North Woods.

The boys team won 82-59.

The girls lost 75-45.



Playoff match-ups for the Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams have been set.

The boys team, who finished first overall, will host Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos this Saturday in a first round game.

The girls ended the season second and will host Dryden in a game scheduled for this Friday.



Fort Frances Lakers travel to Dryden for a key match-up with the Ice Dogs.

Lakers are four points up on the Ice Dogs in the race for second spot in the standings.

The two teams will hook up five times between now and the end of the season.

Lakers have won the last two meetings.



Back-to-back player of the week honours for a member of the Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team.

Jeff Romeus, of Florida, was selected tops in the MCAC's northern division after averaging 36 points per game in two games last week, including 47 in the Voyageurs double over time win over Hibbing.

It's the freshman's fourth award this season.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams are in Ely to face Vermilion Community College.

Fresh from an appearance at the Northern Ontario junior curling championships, Tirzah Keffer skipped her rink to a win the ladies bonspiel held on the the weekend at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

Keffer's rink defeated Christine Jean in the final.

Theresa McFayden took the B-side over Peggy Loyie.

Kim Beaudry's foursome beat Sylvia Smeeth in the C-side

Elaine Sande claimed the D-side over Charlotte Bazylewski.



Cody Heyens of Stratton  will be part of a College curling team to challenge for a national championship next month.

Heyens plays lead for Fanshawe that took the men's event at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association's curling championships on the weekend at St. Thomas.

They defeated Confederation College in the final.

Heyens was also selected as a second team all-star.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams dropped a pair of games to Mesabi Range Saturday.

The women's lost 72-45.

The men fell 65-62.



Fort Frances Lakers forward forward Tyler Broderson is the SIJHL player of the week.

In two games last week, the 18-year-old native of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, registered four points in helping the Lakers to moved into second place in the standings.

Lakers are back on the ice tomorrow against Dryden.



International Falls Broncos basketball teams are facing North Woods.

The boys game is at Falls High School begin at 7:15 p.m.

The girls play their game in Cook.

International Broncos boys hockey team wrapped up its regular season with a 10-3 win over Greenway.

Erik Lassila struck for four goals.

Lucas Debenedet had a six-point night with a goal and five assists.



Fort Frances Lakers conclude their season series with the Minnesota Iron Rangers tonight in Hoyt Lakes.

Lakers are coming of Tuesday night's home win over the Rangers and still hold down second spot in the standings - two points up on Dryden and 3 on the Rangers.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey lost 3-2 in a shoot out to Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos last night.

Clare Sandalovich scored both tallies for the Muskies.



The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team is on the road to face Duluth Marshall.

Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team defeated Hibbing last night 84-55.

Naila Washington and Teaira Martin led the team in scoring with 18 points each.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team has been seeded fifth for the upcoming Section 7-A championship.

They'll face 4th ranked Virginia in the first game a week from today.



The final regular season game for the Broncos goes tonight in Greenway.

Fort Frances Lakers are back alone in second spot, following a 4-3 win on home ice last night against the Minnesota Iron Rangers.

Colton Spicer scored the game winner on a power play with just over a minute to play.

Tyler Brodersen, Brendan Cawston had Fort's other goals.



On the high school schedule, the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team was dumped by Roseau 8-0.

The Broncos boys basketball team defeated Mountain-Iron Buhl  70-57.

Ben Humbert leading the way with 24 points.

The girls team beat Littlefork-Big Falls, 65-43.



A member of the Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team has been named player of the week in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference's northern division.

It's Jeff Romeus' third award this season.

He averaged 20 points per game in two games last week, and currently sits second overall in league scoring.

Meatime, the Voyageurs basketball teams are in action tonight, facing Hibbing.

Women kick it off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Fort Frances Lakers host the Minnesota Iron Rangers for the final time this season.

The teams have split 4 previous games at the Memorial Sports Centre, and are dead even in their overall season series.

A win tonight moves the Lakers into sole possession of second.

A loss in regulation drops the home team to fourth with the Rangers catapulting past the Lakers and Dryden for second.

No provincial titles for area curling rinks.

Stratton's Trevor Bonot finished the men's championship in Nipigon in a three-way tie for fifth.

Brad Jacobs will represent Northern Ontario at the Brier.

Chris Silver's Fort Frances rink ended with a 3-3 record at the bantam boys championship in Longlac, an event won by Tanner Horgan of Sudbury.

Atikokan's Hannah Bazinet finished with a 1-6 record at the bantam girls championship in Sioux Lookout.

They're only win coming against the eventual champion, Jenna Poirier out of Sioux Lookout.



Fort Frances Muskies seniors boy basketball team won its first two games played in the new Northland Cup Series.

The Muskies beat Dryden 51-48, then clobbered Kenora's Beaver Brae 76-38 in the first of three tournaments.



Fort Frances Muskies junior boys basketball team has a couple of wins under its belt to open play in the new Northland Cup Series.

Liam Metke had 13 points in the Muskies 56-23 win over Ignace in the series first tournament in Dryden.

Then Joey Angus hit for 18 points in a 45-41 win in overtime of Kenora's Thomas Aquinas.

The second of three tournament for both junior and senior boys teams goes February 23.

The Atikokan Voyageurs evened their record at 2 and 2 with 45-39 win over Sioux Lookout and a 33-29 win over Dryden at the same tournament.


Northwestern Ontario's regional pee-wee team lost 8-0 to Assiniboine Park in the semi-finals of a tournament in Brandon.

The Stars went 2 and one in round robin play.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team lost both games played against the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Abby Fox had a pair of goals in a 5-4 loss Saturday.

Yesterday, the Voyageurs were blanked 4-0.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams split games played against Itasca Saturday.

The women won 68-53, but the men lost 65-54.
