Local Sports for Friday December 30


Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team ended their play at the Duluth Denfeld tournament with a 5-2 loss to Rosemount.

Muskies scored both their goals late in the third period.




The Muskies girls hockey team earned a 3-2 win over Bloomington-Kennedy at the Schwan Cup in Blaine, Minnesota.

Amy Penner, Hailey Clendenning and Mallory Payne provided the scoring.

Dayna Cridland got the win in net.

The Muskies play St. Croix Valley this afternoon.




Colton Spicer scored the game winner in the shootout to give the Fort Frances Lakers a 4-3 win over the senior Fort Frances Thunderhawks.

Jordan Larson, Henry Guiterrez and Jon Carlson scored in regulation time for the Lakers.

Kevin Webb, Josh Meyers and Riley Caul replied for the senior team.

Local Sports for Thursday Wednesday 29


Fort Frances Lakers won their third straight over the Thunder Bay North Stars, 6-2 in Thunder Bay.

Ryan Wildman with a pair, Jordan Christianson, Henry Gutierrez, Bryan Broders and Jordan Larson scored for the Lakers who play an exhibition game tonight against the senior Fort Frances Thunderhawks at the Memorial Sports Centre.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team will play for 5th place at the Duluth Denfeld tournament after a 6-0  shellacking of Buffalo yesterday.

No scorers were provided.

The Muskies play Rosemount at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team lost 5-2 to Chippewa Falls in the opener of the Schwan Cup in Blaine, Minnesota.

Katie Sinclair and Shelby Timkin scored for the Muskies who were outshot 33-16.

They play Bloomington Kennedy this afternoon.




Kyle Schneider scored a minute into overtime to give the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team a 5-4 win over Osseo to open tournament play in Warroad.

Lucas Debenedet, Brett Musich, Mason Meyer and Erik Lassila also scored.

The Broncos play Grafton, North Dakota tonight.

Local Sports for Wednesday December 28


Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team was thumped 8-3 by Cloquet in the opener of the Duluth Denfeld tournament.

No goal scorers were provided.

They will play St. Louis Park this afternoon.




The Muskies girls hockey team is in Blaine, Minnesota for the Schwan Cup.

They open play tonight against Chippewa Falls.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to Crookston.

Michelle McDonald had both goals for the Broncos.



The Broncos boys hockey team is in tournament play in Warroad with a game tonight against Osseo.




Annis Seid captured the Sunset Country Squash Club's 24th annual boxing day squash tournament.

Seid swept Colin Drombolis in three games for the title.

Bob Tkachuk got by Dave Schwartz in three for the b-side title.

Ryan Brady captured the c-side event in three over Shawn Brady.

Local Sports for Friday December 23


Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team remains unbeaten in NORWOSSA league play.

The seniors cruised to a 56-19 victory over Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos for their second straight win.

The juniors lost 27-26 to the Broncos.

In girls volleyball, the juniors were victorious in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-12 and 25-22

The seniors fell in four.




Rainy River Owls girls volleyball teams head into the Christmas break leading the NORWOSSA A standings.

The senior girls moved into a share of the lead with Kenora's Thomas Aquinas following a 3-set sweep of Atikokan Wednesday.

The Junior Owls, meantime, are unbeaten in eight following their win over Whitefish Bay Wednesday.

Attikokan, who defeated Red Lake Wednesday, sits third.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team was shutout for the second straight time this week.

This time falling 5-0 to Thief River Falls.



The boys hockey team is in action tonight in Silver Bay.

Local Sports for Thursday December 22


Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball teams opened their NORWOSSA seasons with wins.

The Seniors defeated Dryden 46-40.

The juniors were 41-39 winners over the Eagles in overtime.

Meantime, the junior girls volleyball team lost in five sets, 19-25,  25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 11-15.

Muskies court teams are home today to Kenora's Beaver Brae.




Rainy River Owls junior volleyball team swept Whitefish Bay in three sets, 25-7, 25-10 and 25-10.

Tuesday they swept past Red Lake in three while the seniors did the same in their game with Rams on Tuesday.

Hailey Clendenning goal in the shoot out stood as the winner as the Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team defeated Kenora's Thomas Aquinas Saints 3-2.

Ericka Tymkin and Shilo Beck scored in regulation.

Dana Cridland got the win in net.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team was shutout by Bemidji 4-0.




Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball and girls volleyball teams open their NORWOSSA season today.

They are in Dryden for games against the Eagles.





Local Sports for Tuesday December 20


Blake Boaz figured in every goal in helping helping the Fort Frances Lakers to a 6-1 win over the visiting Iron Range Ironheads at the Memorial Sports Centre,

Boaz scored twice and has four assists.

Ryan Wildman, Byron Katapaytuk, Adam Wensley and Bryan Broders had the other goals.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated Red Lake 11-1

No goal scorers were provided.




High School girls hockey teams from Fort Frances and International Falls are in action tonight.

The Muskies face Kenora's Thomas Aquinas Saints at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The Broncos are in Bemidji.




Fort Frances Thunderhawks senior hockey team played their first game on the weekend.

A shorthanded squad was defeated 14-1 by the Thistles in Kenora.






A mid-season poll has the unbeaten Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team still ranked number two in the ACHA west division.

They're now behind the University of Wisconsin Stout who displacing pre-season favourites, University of Minnesota.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team won its sixth straight, 62-46 over Big Fork.



The Broncos boys basketball team lost 60-53 to Littlefork-Big Falls.

Local Sports for Monday December 19


Fort Frances Lakers earned a sweep of the Thunder Bay North Stars with a 6-3 win Saturday.

Bryan Broder scored twice for the Lakers with singles from Brandon Fehd, Ryan Wildman, Jordan Christianson and Henry Gutierrez.

The Lakers had defeated the Stars 5-2 Friday.




Fort Frances Canadians Midget double-a team finished third overall at a tournament in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Here are the scores from the weekend.



First game vs St. Louis Park, Mn. – Fort Frances winning 4-3 in double overtime.
Scoring for Fort Frances Brandon McGinnis, Brandon Sinclair, Cameron Gobeil  and Nolan Ross (ot winner)

Second game vs Minnetonka, Mn. – Fort Frances lost 6-3.
Scoring for Fort Frances   Robbie Payne, Dillon Grinsell and Brody McPherson

Third games vs Blaine, Mn. – Fort Frances winning 3-2 in double overtime.
Scoring for Fort Frances   Davis Ross 2 (ot winner) and Dillon Grinsell.



Fort Frances Canadians double-a pee-wee team won the c-side of the Detroit Lake Tournament, beating West Fargo 3-2 in that final game.

Noah Loveday, Cole Tymkin, and Chase McGuire scored for the Canadians who went 3-1 in round robin play.



In girls hockey from the weekend, the Fort Frances Leafs bantam team lost a pair of games, 1-nothing to Duluth Marshall on Friday then 4-nothing to Dryden on Saturday.

In other games Saturday, the Norfab Flames peewee team tied the Fort Frances Lionis 3-3.

Emma Noga, Maighyn Degagne and Annalise Hayes scored for the Flames.

Connor Scholfield with a pair and Brent Jourdain replied for the Lions.

The International Falls under 12 team beat Kaemingh Esso 3-1.

On Sunday, the Lakewood Tire Eagles peewee team tied International Falls 3-3.

Hannah LeDrew, Annalise Hayes and Kaitlyn Gurniak scored for the Eagles.



A Fort Frances Muskies junior girls volleyball split squad earned silver at a season-opening tournament in Dryden on the weekend.

Team Black finished first in their pool before defeated by Dryden in two-sets in the final.

Team Gold reached the semi's before losing to the Black team in three hard fought sets.




Local Sports for Friday December 16


Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team remains unbeaten in regulation time in NORWOSSA.

The Muskies thumped Sioux Lookout 7-1 to move four points up on Kenora for the league lead.




Fort Frances Lakers take to the road this weekend to stop a mini two-game losing streak.

Fort Frances is in Thunder Bay to play the North Stars for a two-game series starting tonight.

The Stars are five points back of the second place Lakers.




A busy day for high school sports team at Falls High School.

The Broncos boys hockey team is at Virginia.

The girls hockey team is home to Princeton - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco arena.

The boys basketball team is at Ely.




Fort Frances bantam Leafs girls hockey team will face off against Duluth-Marshall Hilltoppers - 7:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena

It's a rematch from a pair of games played back in October in which the Leafs lost both times.

The Muskies enter two points up Kenora's Beaver Brae for the NORWOSSA lead.

International Falls Broncos boys hockey team gave up the game's first goal then roared back with six straight to defeat Lake of the Woods 6-1.

Eric Lassila led with a pair of goals.

The Broncos girls hockey team lost 5-1 to Hibbing.

On the court, the Broncos boys basketball team beat Chisholm 70-35.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team defeated the Lake of The Woods Bears 4-2 in Baudette last night.

Taylor Dixon scored twice while Katie Sinclair and Shelby Tymkin added the others.

Calie Clendenning got the win in goal.


Local Sports for Tuesday December 13


International Falls Broncos girls basketball team defeated Chisholm 70-47.

Hanna Heibel and Jenna Vergeldt each chipped in 16 points for the Broncos who improved to 5-0 on the season.




A pair of atom hockey teams from Fort Frances fared well at a weekend tournament in Dryden.

The MEC Bulldogs lost to Red Lake in the A-side final after placing second out of 17 teams in round robin place.

The Causeway Cougars, who were fourth overall, lost in the semi-finals to Red Lake.




Internationa Falls Broncos boys hockey team hosts Lake of the Woods - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco arena.

The girls team is in Hibbing.



Rainy River Owls court teams are hosting Pelican Falls.


Local Sports for Monday December 12


Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team went undefeated at a tournament in Portage La Praire, but were relegated to the consolation final where they defeated the host team 2-1.

The Muskies were among three teams that ended the round robin portion with three wins, but because they had the lowest goal differential, the Muskies only qualified for the consolation championship.

Shae-Lynn Smith and Shilo Beck scored in the final.

Dana Cridland faced just 6 shots in net.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team whitewashed Red Lake Saturday 8-0.




Fort Frances Canadians Midget AA team reached the finals of a tournament in Duluth, but lost 7-2 to Minnetonka.

Tyler Fontana and Davis Ross scoring for the Canadians who had beaten Duluth 7-4, St. Louis Park 2-0  and White Bear Lake 4-1 along the way.




Emo Stars beat the Fort Frances OPP 3-2 in a shoot out to take the b-side title of the midget A tournament held at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The championship was won by Thunder Bay's West End Bruins.



Fort Frances Leafs girls bantam team went winless at a tournament in Thunder Bay, losing three and tying one.




Emo Bolts won the peewee side of a girls hockey tournament in Emo, beating Fort Frances Lakewood Tire in overtime 2-1.




Fort Frances Lakers dropped their second straight Saturday - a 5-2 decision to the hands of the Dryden Ice Dogs.

Henry Gutierrez and Alex Bruess scored for the Lakers who have now fallen five points back of Wisconsin for the league lead.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team defeated Proctor Saturday 6-4 after losing to Hibbing Friday 4-2.

Jack Bragg with a pair, Luke Spilde, Lucas Debenedet, Kyler Schneider and Joel Skirten scored in Saturday's game.




International Falls Broncos girls basketball teams beat Eveleth-Gilbert Friday 58-44.

Jenna Vergeldt led the Broncos with 17 points.

International Falls Broncos boys basketball team edged Hibbing 46-45.

Gunnar Anderson led all Broncos with 13 points.





In Norwossa A basketball, the Rainy River Owls senior boys basketball team lost 78-38 to Kenora's St. Thomas Aquanis.

The juniors lost 33-16.

Wednesday, the senior Owls fell 55-14 to Red Lake while the juniors were defeated 27-23.



Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team kicks off its season with a tournament at Fort High.


The Muskies senior girls volleyball team is in tournament play in Dryden.

The Muskies girls hockey team is in tournament play in Portage la Praire.



At Falls High School, the Broncos boys hockey team is home to Hibbing.



Rainy River Voyaguers mens and women's basketball teams host Fergus Falls tonight in their home openers.

A six team midget A hockey tournament opens today at the Ice For Kids Arena.

Fort Frances Minor Hockey, Fort Frances OPP, Emo Stars and Emo Cowboys, along with Thunder Bay teams are involved.

In girls hockey, Lakewood Tire Eagles tied Kaemingh Esso 2-2 in a peewee division game.

Annalise Hayes scord both goals for the Eagles.

Emma Noga and Abby Plourde replied for Esso.

Skates and Blades beat the BDO Dunwoody Stars 2-1 in a bantam match up.

Madisyn DeGagne and Angel McCormack scored for Skates and Blades.

Rachel Jean with the goal for the Stars.

They face Kenora's Thomas Aquanis Saints.

The Muskies lead the league with 3 wins and a shoot out loss.

Local Sports for Wednesday December 7


A sweep for Falls High School sports teams.

The Broncos boys hockey team whitewashed Eveleth-Gilbert 8-0.

The Broncos girls hockey teams blanked the Fort Frances Muskies 2-0.

Jordan Blight and Jenna Anderson scoring for the Broncos.

The Broncos boys basketball team defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 81-31.

Forrest Arch and Gunnar Anderson led the Broncos in scoring with 15 points each.

The Broncos girls basketball team beat Lake of the Woods 81-47 with Jenna Vergeldt leading the way with 19 points.

Local Sports for Tuesday December 6


Fort Frances snowmobiler Curtis Boivin is reportedly in critical condition and in a coma following a racing accident in Beausejour, Manitoba.

He had to be airlifted to Beaujesour hospital after he struck a downed snow machine during a season opening event.




Several members of the Sunset Country Squash Club earned medals at a weekend tournament in Thunder Bay.

Angel McCormack won the men's C division.

Jesse Quesnel took the Junior A side while Davis Jackson was the winner on the B-side, beating out Naomi McManaman.

Jason Kabel was a finalist on the Men's A-side.




Fort Frances Canadian Tire Sabres bantam B team went undefeated to capture a weekend tournament in Thunder Bay, defeating the Westfort Rangers 3-2 in Sunday's final.

Josh Calder scored twice with Andrew Pinsent notching the other.

Ian Jodoin was named MVP.




It's a border battle in girls hockey tonight.

The Fort Frances Muskies hosts International Falls - 7:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.




Several other Falls High School teams are also in action tonight.

The Broncos boys hockey team plays Eveleth-Gilbert - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The Broncos boys basketball team hosts Eveleth-Gilbert - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High School.

The girls basketball team is in Baudette to play Lake of the Woods.

Local Sports for Monday December 5


Jennifer Haw's Stratton rink earned a berth to next month's provincial junior women's curling playdown in Sioux Lookout.

Haw's foursome went 4 and 1 and finished in a tie for first with Sioux Lookout's Kaitlyn Poirier at a qualifying event in Kenora.




Donovan Taylor and Adam Stromberg led members of the Fort Frances Aquanaut swim team at a meet in Winnipeg

Taylor picked up a gold, silver and four bronze.

Stromberg reached the finals in two events.




A pair of third period goals by Jordan Christianson paced the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-1 win over Iron Range last night.

Connor Hady, Byron Katapaytuk and Alex Bruess also replied for the Lakers.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team lost 3-nothing to Selkirk in the b-side final at a tournament in Brandon.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team opened its season Saturday with a 6-5 overtime win over Little Falls

Lucas Debenedet with 3 goals and 2 assists in the game.

The Bronco girls team split games with Detroit Lakes, losing 4-3 Friday and winning 3-2 on Saturday.




Fort Frances Canadians AA pee-wees finished 3rd at the International Falls PeeWee A tournament, defeating Eveleth Gilbert 2-1 in overtime in the bronze final. game.

Brett Hakalla had OT winner with Cole Tymkin notching the other Canadian goal.



The BDO Stars lost 2-1 in the bronze medal game of a tournament in Kenora.




Rainy River Voyageurs kept its unbeaten streak alive with a pair of identical 6-1 wins over Iowa State.

Kristen Penner with a hat trick in the second game.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team defeated Deer River Friday 78-26



Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team dropped a pair of games on the weekend, losing 82-51 to Riverland Friday and 89-35 to Anoka Ramsay on Saturday.

Nick Kaun scored twice as the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team Brandon's Vincent Massey 6-2 in the opener of a tournament in Brandon.

Jeff Davis, Tyler Mosbeck, Hunter Leishman and Tarran Romyn also scored.

The Muskies play Stonewall at noon today.




In Girls hockey from last night the Nor-Fab Flames pee-wee team defeated the Fort Frances Lions 3-2.

Emma Noga and Lauren Hamilton scored for Nor-Fab.

Brent Jourdain and Conner Scholfield replied for the Lions.


Wednesday Kaemingh Esso defeated the Super 8 2 -1.

Emma Noga and Hailey Tucker scored for Esso.

Siobhan MacKintosh had the lone goal for Super 8.



Fort Frances Lakers are home to Wisconsin Wilderness tonight.



Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association's midget AA tournament begins today at the Memorial Sports Centre.




Jennifer Haw of Stratton is the lone contender from the Rainy River district at a regional junior women's curling playdown in Kenora this weekend.

Her foursome is seeking a berth to next months provincial's in Sioux Lookout.




Emo's Taylor Latimer has finished 37th over-all in the junior division of Skate Canada's Challenge competition in Regina.

She placed 37th in the long-program yesterday after a 31st place finish in the short-program Wednesday.



Local Sports for Thursday December 1


Fort Frances Lakers had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 6-5 shoot out loss to the Dryden Ice Dogs last night at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Jordan Larson with a pair, Marty McFadden, Blake Boaz, and Connor Hady scored for the Lakers who face league leading Wisconsin Friday.




Emo's Taylor Latimer is 31st after skating the short program in the junior division of Skate Canada's Challenge Competition in Regina.

The long program portion of the competition goes tonight.
