Local Sports For Tuesday September 25


It's a full day of sports at Fort Frances High School.

Boys volleyball and girls basketball teams open their NORWOSSA seasons against Dryden.

Action begins at 12 noon.

Then at 3 p.m., the Muskies football team hosts Tec Voc.




In the Falls, the Broncos girls volleyball team has a home game against Virginia.

Game time is 7 pm at Falls High School.

The cross country run teams are in action in Ely.






The Fort Frances Curling Club has been forced to cancel its Sticks and Stones Bonspiel for this week.

It's because of problems with the Club's ice plant.

No word yet if the event will be rescheduled or how long the plant will be down.

Local Sports For Monday September 24


Falls High School girls swim team finished fifth at the Shiverland Invitation in Hibbing on Saturday.

Carolann Stone and Abby Kostiuk picked up wins in the 100 yard backstroke while Emily Saari captured the 100 yard breaststroke.

Falls relay teams claimed two wins.




Some strong performances by runners from this area at the Miles with the Giant Marathon in Thunder Bay.

Shelly Gustafson of Fort Frances was 19th among females and 3rd in her age group in the half marathon.

Doug Coutts of Atikokan was 24th among the men in the half marathon while Jeffrery Gustafson of Fort Frances was 41st, good for 2nd in the under 20 category.

Sheldon Haw of Atikokan was 1st among men in the half marathon walk.

Ilka Milne and Kendall Richardson of Fort Frances were both among the top 20 women to finish the 10 K run while Gaydonna Baker of Emo was tops in the 60 to 69 division.



Emo's Luke Judson scored a hat-trick in Lakehead University's 6-2 win over Ottawa on Saturday.




Rainy River's Brenley Anderson had a goal and two assists in three games for the Manitoba Bisons at a tournament in Regina.

Anderson played for the Rainy River Voyageurs last season.




Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team was swept in three game Saturday by Central Lakes, 11-25, 14-25 and 7-25.

Local Sports For Friday September 21


Falls High School girls swim team beat Mesabi East in head-to-head competition.

The team won seven of 12 events with Sarah Todd, Breanna Shofner and Kari Arnold each winning twice.

Abby Kostiuk had the other win in the 100 yard backstroke.




Action for the Fort Frances Muskies today see the senior boys volleyball team in tournament play in Kenora.

The football team is in Winnipeg to play Daniel McIntrye.

In International Falls, the Broncos football team is visiting Cloquet tonight.




SIJHL kicks off its season in three locations tonight.

Fort Frances Lakers don't play until next Wednesday.

Teams will be playing under some new rules, adopted from the NHL.

It includes minor penalties for for shooting the puck over the glass.

The league is also instituting a zero tolerance to hits to the head and contact from behind.

Local Sports For Thursday September 20


The Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team was upset in an exciting match by Hibbing by scores of 25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 23-25 and 13-15 in the final and deciding game.

The Voyageurs are home to Northland Community College tomorrow.

Local Sports For Wednesday September 19


A two-time world curling champion from Thunder Bay is taking his skills and knowledge of the sport south of the border.

Al Hackner has been hired by USA Curling as a national team coach.

He'll be working with USA's high performance teams.




Lexi Erickson and Sydney Raboin finished 3rd and 4th at the Bagley/Fosston Invitational as Falls High School girls cross country run team finished 2nd behind Warroad.

The boys team was 10th out of 16 teams with Marco Griffith having its best finish in 32nd.




International Broncos girls volleyball team lost in 3-straight games to Lake of the Woods, 20-25, 16-25 and 24-25.

Reva Renollet has 8 assists and 7 digs while Hailey Fentem led with 9 kills.

Local Sports For Monday September 17


Fort Frances Lakers dropped a pair of exhibition matches against the Minnesota Wilderness, 5-3 on Saturday and 6-1 yesterday.

Mason Meyer had the lone goal in yesterday's game in Cloquet.

Merritt Rysavy, Alex Bruess and Joel Bogacki had the goals in Saturday's home game with the defending SIJHL champions.




Fort Frances Muskies junior boys volleyball team won the consolation side of a tournament in Kenora, beating Dryden Gold 3 games to 2.

Muskies went 6 and 4 in pool play.




Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team defeated Fond Du Lac Friday in 3 straight games, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16.



Fort Frances Muskies senior girls basketball team went 2 and 2 at a tournament in Thunder Bay, beating Westgate and Dryden with its loses to Timmins and Kenora.





Falls High School girls swim team finished 5th overall at a meeting in Hibbing Saturday, failing to crack the podium in any of the events




Emo anglers Wayne Howard and Dean Howard captured the Crow Lake Classic Bass tournament in Nestor Falls.

Their two-day catch of almost 31 lbs was about 3.5 lbs more than second place team of Murphy Paypompee and Howard Kabestra of Whitefish Bay First Nation.




Final points race of the Borderland Go-Karting club yesterday saw Tanner Williamson win the feature in the advanced class.

Jyllian Westover won her first of the year in the novice division.

Peyton Kinnear took checkers in the beginner class.




Several strong finishes by area runners at an event in Walker, Minnesota.

Jennifer Erickson of International Falls was 20th overall in the half marathon, fourth among females.

Fort Frances runners Shelly Gustafson and Dr. Lorena Jenks were first in their age brackets.

In the 10 K run, 13-year-old Lexi Erikson of International Falls finished 13th, 3rd among all women.






Local Sports For Friday September 14


Another first place finish for the Falls High School girls cross country run team.

The team bested 10 other schools with four runners scoring top 20 finishes.

It was paced by Lexi Erickson finishing 2nd and Sydney Raboin in 4th.

Marco Griffith's 13th place showing was best for the boys team that finished 5th out of 14 teams.




A win in the pool as well for the Broncos girls swimming team, outscoring Northeast Range-Ely in head to head competition.

Bronco swimmers won seven of 11 events.




International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team dropped a 3-set match to Greenway, 23-25, 11-25 and 16-25.

Broncos are in Duluth tonight to play Duluth-Marshall.

Tonight the Broncos football club hosts Proctor, 7 p.m. at Bronco Stadium.




At Fort Frances High School, the Muskies football team visits Dryden looking for its first win of the season.

The schedule also sees the junior boys volleyball team in tournament action in Kenora.

The senior girls basketball team is listed for tournament play in Thunder Bay.



Local Sports For Wednesday September 12


Golfers from Dryden High School dominated the second tournament of the NORWOSSA golf season, held at Little Falls Golf Course in Atikokan

Dryden led all schools in the team competition in both boys and girls while three of its golfers tied for first in the boys divisions.

Brandon Sinclair and James Brown had the best showing for Fort Frances High School shooting rounds of 83 while Evan Krassey of Atikokan shot a 90.




Falls High School girls swim team was edged in the pool by Chisholm in head to competition.

Sarah Todd in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard breaststroke and Breanna Shafner in the 60 yard and 100 yard freestyle captured the Falls only wins.

The Falls junior team won seven events in beating Chisholm.

Local Sports For Tuesday September 11


Falls High School girls cross-country run team finished first overall at an event in Warroard.

The team was led by Lexi Erickson who finished second and Sydney Raboin in 4th.

The boys team was third in its division with Marco Griffith finishing 8th.




Second golf tournament of the NORWOSSA season is to go today in Atikokan.

High schools from across the Kenora and Rainy River districts are taking part.

Local Sports For Monday September 10


Six round of shooters were needed to decide Saturday's exhibition game between the Fort Frances Lakers and Dryden.

The Ice Dogs came out on top 3-2.

Alex Bruess and Joel Bogacki had the Fort goals.




This season is just underway, but a member of the Fort Frances Lakers already knows where he's playing next year.

Defenceman Brendan Fehd has committed to play for the Northland College Lumberjacks in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Meantime, former Lakers Henry Guetierrez and Tyler Ampe are heading to Williston State in North Dakota for this year.




Go-karting at Emo yesterday saw Delbert Collette win the feature in the advance class.

A.J. Kellar claimed checkers in the novice division.

An a new beginner class had Peyton Kinnear winning over Sammy Stone.




Borderland Racing Association wrapped up its year Saturday with Fan Appreciation Day.

Feature winners were Gary Wilson in the WISSOTA Modified division, Christopher Leek in Midwest modified division and Tylar Wilson in the Street Stocks.




A third place finish for Luke Skaarup of Fort Frances at a professional strongman competition in Dubreuillve, Ontario.

The event attract top athletes from across Canada and the United States.

Skaarup finished behind Jean Francois Caron, current holder of Canada's strongest man title and Dave Ostlund of Minneapolis, who's a six time world strongest man finalist.




The Winnipeg team of Alex Kezler and Wayne Wagner took top spot at the Sioux Narrows Bassin' For Bucks.

They edged out last year's winners, Darrin Bohonos of Winnipeg and Bryan Gustafson of Fort Frances
by less than 2/10ths of a pound.





Local Sports For Friday September 7


It's the opening of the Winnipeg High School Football League for the Fort Frances Muskies.

They have their opener this afternoon at 3 pm at Muskie field  against Elmwood.




The International Falls Broncos football team plays in Virginia.

Bronco opened their season last Friday with a home loss to Foley.




Fort Frances Lakers get their first exhibition action tonight at the 52 Canadian Rink.

The Lakers host the Dryden Ice Dogs in the first of a home and home weekend series.

Game time is 7:30 p.m..




Falls High School girls swim team has won its first swim competition of the year.

The team outscored Eveleth in head to head competition.

Breanna Shofner had two of the teams six wins.




On the volleyball court, the Internatinoal Falls Broncos girls volleyball team defeated Cherry 3 games to one.

In a late score from Wednesday night,  the Rainy River Voyageurs were swept in 3-games by Mesabi Range.





Local Sports For Thursday September 6


The first NORWOSSA golf tournament was held in Dryden.

Kendell Olson of Atikokan High School finished fourth in the girls division.

No girls from Fort Frances High School were involved

Evan Krassy of Atikokan had the best finish among the district boys, tying for 18th overall.

James Brown led all Fort Frances golfers with a 20th place finish.

The next tournament goes in Atikokan next week.




Two former International Falls Broncos will be continuing their pro-hockey careers in Tulsa this year.

Drew Fisher and Ben Gordon have been signed by the Central Hockey League club.

Fisher played the final six games of last season with the Oilers while Gordon spent his season in Germany.

Local Sports For Wednesday September 5


International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team lost its second straight match, falling 3-0 to Northwoods of Cook, 13-25, 13-25 and 22-25.

Reva Renollet had 8 digs, 6 assists and 2 service aces in a losing cause.

Local Sports For Tuesday September 4


Steve Arpin will have to wait before racing again.

He was supposed to compete in yesterday's ARCA series race in Duqoin, Illinois.

But the event was postponed due to weather.

The race has been scheduled to later next month.



International Falls Broncos football team opened its season Friday, losing to Foley 38-8.




Fort Frances Lakers will have Colton Spicer in the line-up this year.

Spicer is back home after participating in the Sudbury Wolves training back on the weekend.

He's expected in the line-up when the Lakers begin a series of exhibition games this weekend.


Local Sports For Friday August 31


The Big Grassy Braves have captured the Rainy River District Fastball League Championship.

The Braves hammered six homeruns in defeating the Stratton Eagles 14-6.

Mitch Seguin, Tim Archie, Brendan Small George, Dakota Andy and winning pitcher Travis Tom all hit homers.

It's the first ever title win for the Braves.




International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team suffered it's first loss of the season, losing to Littlefork-Big Falls in three games, 14-25, 19-25 and 11-25.

Dyana Imhof had 15 kills while Brooke Millerbernd had 7 kills and 14 digs.




Falls High School girls swim team was out-scored by Hibbing  in its first head-to-head competition in the pool this season.

Clara Wenger finished first in diving.

Emily Saari won the 100 metre breast stroke while Falls relay teams won the 200 and 400 metre freestyle events.
