Local Sports for Tuesday February 28


It's come down to a one game showdown in girls hockey with the Fort Frances Muskies in Dryden to face the Eagles.

Winner will face Kenora's Beaver Brae in the final.




Fort Frances Lakers netminder Tanner Hamilton has been named SIJHL's player of the week.

Hamilton won all three of his starts last week, stopping 81 of 87 shots faced.




From the weekend, the Lakewood Tire Eagles were winners of a pee-wee girls hockey tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre.

They defeated International Falls in the final with Maighyn DeGagne, Hannah LeDrew and Annalise Hayes scoring for the Eagles.

Alexis Ericksons had the Falls lone goal.




Two Atikokan residents are in Alberta for the Canadian Special Olympics National Winter Games.

Joshua Wiens will compete in cross country skiing while William Hanlon is in snow-shoeing.




The Border Skating Club came away with a number of podium finishes at a weekend event in Thunder Bay.

Alina Eldridge and Sophie Potvin-Begin led the way with gold in each of the three events they participated.

Local Sports for Monday February 27


Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team is headed to the provincial championships.

The Muskies swept by Thunder Bay's Churchill, winning 59-53 Friday and 57-46 Saturday to take the NWOSSA title.

The provincial championships begin March 5th in St. Catherines.




The Muskies boys hockey team will face Kenora's Beaver Brae for the Norwossa hockey title.

The Muskies defeated Dryden 3-2 Friday and 3-1 yesterday in Dryden to take their semi-final series in two.

The finals open Friday in Fort Frances.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team has been forced to a third and deciding game in its semi-final series with Dryden after the Eagles won 5-1 at the Sports Centre.

The Muskies had won 6-4 Friday in Dryden to open the series.

Game 3 will be played tomorrow in Dryden.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team was eliminated from the Section 7A hockey championship with a 6-4 loss to Hibbing on Saturday.




League MVP Henry Gutierrez scored with 11 seconds remaining to lead the Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-3 win over Thunder Bay Saturday.

Brett McMahon, Jordan Christianson and Blake Boaz also scored.




Fort Frances Canadians AA pee-wee team closed out its home season by sweeping the International Falls Broncos on the weekend.

Canadians won 7-6 Saturday at Kerry Park then 6-3 Sunday at the Memorial Sports Centre.




The Judy LaBelle rink of Fort Frances finished with a 2 and 4 record at the northern Ontario senior women's curling playdown in Kapaskasing.

The event was won by Darla Esche of North Bay.

Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team will play Dryden in the NorWossa semi-finals following a 7-1 beating of Red Lake last night.

The Muskies-Eagles series opens tonight in Dryden with game two at the Memorial Sports Centre Sunday at 2:45 p.m.




Mason Meyer scored three times in leading the International Falls Broncos to a 6-1 win over Greenway in the Section 7-A boys hockey championship tournament.

The Broncos now face Hibbing in a semi-final match up in Grand Rapids tomorrow.




Byron Katapaytuk tallied twice and set-up another to help lead the Fort Frances Lakers past Sioux Lookout 4-2  last night.

Jordan Christianson and Merritt Rysavy added the other Laker goals.

Judy LaBelle is the lone representative from the Rainy River district at the northern Ontario senior women's curling playdown in Kapaskasing.

Her Fort Frances foursome open play this afternoon.




International Falls Broncos are in action in the Section 7A boys hockey championship with a home game against Greenway - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena

The 3rd ranked Broncos beat Greenway in a previous meeting back in January.



Fort Frances Lakers are in action tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre against Sioux Lookout.

Local Sports for Tuesday February 21

Jordan's Christianson's third period goals stood as the winner as the Fort Frances Lakers ended their road portion of the SIJHL with a 3-1 win over Dryden.




Jacob Barker scored three time as the Emo Canucks defeated the Fort Frances MEC Bulldogs 3-2 to win an Atom A hockey tournment in Emo.

Blake Jones and Adam George replied for the Bulldogs.

Atikokan won the B-side title blanking Kenora 3-0.

And the Gillons Sharks edged the Causeway Cougars 2-1 in an all-Fort Frances C-side final.




Mason Meyer scored 7 minutes into overtime for his second goal of the game as the International Falls Broncos defeated the Fort Frances Muskies in an boys hockey game Friday in Fort Frances.

Both teams now prepare for their respective playoffs this week.




Ontario, featuring Devlin's Jenna Enge, has fallen to a tie for 6th following a pair of losses at the Canadian women's curling championship in Red Deer, Alberta.

B-C's Kelly Scott and defending champion Amber Holland lead with 4 and 1 records.




Sunset County Squash Club held is 25th annual tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre on the weekend.

It's win or hang up the skates for the Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team.

They face Red Lake in Red Lake with the winner to advance to the NORWOSSA semi-finals set for this weekend.



Fort Frances Lakers Jordan Larson is the SIJHL's rookie of the yeaer.

Larson leads all rookies with 34 goals and 68 points, five best overall in the league. 



Fort Frances Thunderhawks has struck first in a two-game series with Kenora to decide home-ice advantage in the regional Allan Cup playdown.

Jordan Davis scored twice while Nick Bydal and Mike English added singles as the Hawks beat the Thistles 4-1 Saturday.

Game two of the series will be played in Kenora March 2.



Fort Frances Canadians Bantam Double-A team won a weekend tournament in Wisconsin Dells beating Norwest Chargers 6-1.

They went undefeated during the tournament. 







Local Sports for Friday February 17


The Rainy Owls will have at least two court teams in finals today at the NORWOSSA A playoffs in Kenora.

The Owls senior girls volleyball team swept Sioux Lookout in a semi-final game yesterday and will face Thomas Aquanis in the final.

The Owls junior girls volleyball team also faces Thomas Aquanis in a final after the Saints eliminated Atikokan in five sets in yesterday's finals.

Th Owls junior boys basketball team was also in semi-final action yesterday, but no score has been received.




Henry Gutierrez, Jaret Leclair and Davis Smith combined to 15 points to help pace Fort Frances Lakers to a 10-3 drubbing of the Iron Range Ironheads in Chisolm.

Gutierrez tallied four times and set-up another.

Leclair had a hat-trick and two assists while Smith dished out five helpers.

The Lakers are in Wisconsin tonight.




Fort Frances Muskies and the International Falls Broncos boys hockey teams face off tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre as a tune up to their respective playoffs.

The Muskies enter the NORWOSSA playoffs in first.

The Broncos are ranked 3rd in the Section 7A championship.

Meantime, the Muskies girls hockey team ends its NORWOSSA regular season with a game in Red Lake.



The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team hosts Marshall - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High School




Former Fort Frances Lakers Dane Morin has been named SIJHL's most sportsmanlike player.

Morin, who started the season with the Lakers before moved to Sioux Lookout, has the fourth lowest penalty minute total in the league.

The league has also named Duluth's Matt Morsette as the most improved player.







Local Sports for Thursday February 16


Fort Frances Muskies court teams used their home court advantage to earn three of four NORWOSSA championship yesterday.

The senior boys basketball team will advance to the NWOSSA playdown after beating Dryden 43-37 for the NORWOSSA crown.

The junior boys dominated Dryden in their final 44-25

The biggest upset came in junior girls volleyball where the Muskies defeated top-ranked Dryden in four sets for the win.

The seniors girls, winners of just one win during the regular season, surprised Kenora in the semi-finals, but lost to Dryden in three sets in the final.




Playoffs in NORWOSSA A action takes place today in Kenora with three district high school teams in action.

The Rainy River Owls plays Kenora's Thomas Aquanis in a semi-final game in junior boys basketball.

The Owls are also in semi-final action in senior girls volleyball against Sioux Lookout.

And Atikokan faces Thomas Aquanis in junior girls volleyball for the right to play Rainy River in tomorrow's final.

Fort Frances High School hosts the NORWOSSA playoffs in boys basketball and girls volleyball today.

The Muskies junior and senior girls volleyball squads are in semi-final action this morning.

The junior and senior boys basketball teams earned byes to their respective finals.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team fell 4-3 to Dryden.

Katie Sinclair, Kaily Greengrass, and Taylor Dixon scored.

The Muskies will play an apparent make-up today with Red Lake - 1:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Admission is free.




A heart breaker for the International Falls Broncos girls hockey team.

The Broncos were eliminated from the Section 7A championship tournament after losing 4-3 in overtime to Chisago Lakes in a semi-final game.



The International Falls Broncos boys hockey team lost 4-2 to Roseau.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team won its third straight with a 74-43 victory over Mountain Iron-Buhl.



The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team made it three straight as well with a 58-34 win over Littlefork-Big Falls.



Fort Frances native Steve Arpin back behind the wheel of a dirt modified last night at Volusia Speedway in Florida where the placed 22nd in the feature race.




Rainy River Owls court teams took three of four games played yesterday against Atikokan

Both the Owls junior and senior girls volleyball teams won in straight sets and advance to the Norwossa A playoffs set for tomorrow in Kenora.

Atikokan's juniors had previously secured a playoff spot.

The Owls also won in senior boys basketball, playing spoiler by eliminating Atikokan from the post season.

And the junior boys basketball team lost 33-31, but earned a playoff berth due to a tie-breaker with Red Lake and Ignace.




First round playoff dates have been set for the Fort Frances Lakers.

With second place secure, the Lakers and Wisconsin will compete in a one-vs two showdown to determine their next round opponents.

First of two two-game total goal series will open March 2 in Spooner before heading to the Memorial Sports Centre a week later.

Local Sports for Tuesday February 14


There are playoff implications in today's final regular season games in the Norwossa A division of boys basketball and girls volleyball with Rainy River in Atikokan.

In senior boys basketball, Atikokan is tied with Sioux Lookout for the third and final playoff spot.

In junior boys play, Rainy River is in a three-way tie for third.

Both schools are already in the playoffs in junior girls volleyball with Rainy River currently first and Atikokan third.

Rainy River is second in senior play while Atikokan can finish no higher than fourth.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team plays its final home game of the Norwossa regular season with a game against Dryden.

Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 6:45 p.m.




A busy day for high school teams in the Falls.

The Broncos girls hockey team is in semi-final action against top ranked Chiscago Lakes in the Section 7A championship.

That game being played in Cloquet.

The Broncos boys hockey team hosts Roseau - 7:30 p.m. at Broncos Arena

The Broncos boys basketball team faces Mountain-Iron Buhl in their first game in almost two weeks.

And the girls basketball team is at Littlefork-Big Falls.




In girls hockey from last night, Lakewood Tire Eagles blanked Super 8 3-0 in a pee-wee division match-up.

Macey Weir, Maighyn DeGagne and Kelsey Langtry provided the scoring.

Local Sports for Monday February 13


Fort Frances Canadians double-A midget team has won its third straight tournament.

The Canadians won four straight, including a 5-3 decision in the final over Minneapolis Centennial to capture a tournament in Grand Rapids.

The Canadians have not lost in 16 games during their run.




Jordan Christianson scored twice and Tyler Ampe stopped all 23 shots for his second shutout of the year as the Fort Frances Lakers blanked Wisconsin 5-0 Saturday.

It's just the second time the Lakers have been the league leaders this year.




Several Fort Frances Lakers have been nominated for season-ending awards by the SIJHL.

Byron Katapaytuk is up for MVP.

Jordan Larson  has been nominated as rookie of the year.

Type Ampe is in the running for goaltender of the year honours.

Henry Gutierrez is selected as a candidate for best forward award.

Ryan Wildman is up for most improved.

Blake Boaz selected for the most sportsmanlike award.

Wayne Strachan has been nominated as coach of the year.

The award winners will be named over the next few weeks.




Northwestern Ontario pee-wee all-stars ended a tournament in Brandon in fourth place, losing 3-0 to Portage La Prairie in the bronze medal game.

The team included seven players from the Fort Frances area.




Fort Frances Novice teams dominated a tournament in Kenora.

The Times Tigers beat Taggs Source for Sports for the title 3-2 in an 11 round shootout.

The Armstrong Crushers and Fine Food Fury reached the semi-finals.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team ended its NorWossa regular season with an 11-2 romp over Dryden Friday.

The Muskies end the season in first.



International falls Broncos boys hockey team fell 8-3 to Grand Rapids Friday.



The Broncos girls basketball team defeated Virginia 64-53 Friday.

Local Sports for Friday February 10


Trevor Bonot's Stratton rink suffered a blow yesterday at the Northern Ontario men's curling playdown in Sault Ste. Marie

Bonot fell to 6th spot after losing 8-4 to Brad Jacobs of the Soo and 7-4 to Jordan Chandler of Sudbury.

Bonot needs a win in his final game this morning and some help from other rinks to force tiebreakers in order to advance to the playoff round.




Fort Frances area players figures in all of the scoring in the Northwest All-stars 4-0 win over Lumsden to open a pee-wee hockey tournament in Brandon.

Noah Loveday, Hunter Koles and Brett Hakala each scored goals while Loveday added an assist in the teams's other goal by Elijah Loon-Stewardson.

The Stars play Mordon this morning.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated Sioux Lookout last night 8-1.

They're in Dryden tonight.




Christian Kittleson scored three times in pacing the Internatinoal Falls Broncos boys hockey team to a 7-1 win over Lake of the Woods.



The Broncos girls basketball team defeated Greenway 73-46.




Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball teams have earned byes to the finals of next week's NORWOSSA playoffs.

The junior boys teams secured first place in its division with a 39-21 win over Dryden yesterday.

The senior boys ended their season with a 49-27 win over the Eagles.



The Muskies girls volleyball teams will have to earn their way into the NORWOSSA finals.

The senior girls volleyball team will face Kenora in a semi-final game after ending its season in last with a three-set loss to Dryden.

The juniors will also play Kenora in the semis after finishing second with a three loss sets to the Eagles.

Stratton's Trevor Bonot split games yesterday at the Northern Ontario men's curling playdown in Sault Ste. Marie.

His foursome now sits tied for third at 5 and 3 after losing to Thunder Bay's Joe Sharf 6-4 in an afternoon draw, and rebounding for a 7-5 win over the Soo's Tim Phillips.

Mike Jakubo of Copper Cliff still leads at 8 and oh.




A couple of podium finishes for Atikokan High School at the NWOSSA high school Nordic ski championships in Marathon yesterday.

Erik Larson won gold in the senior boys division while Kiara Gannon placed second in junior girls.





Fort Frances Lakers came out on the losing end of a 2-1 game in Dryden.

Blake Boaz goal with five seconds left in the third was the Lakers only goal.




Seven players from the Fort Frances area are part of a Northwestern Ontario all-star peewee team beginning play today at a tournament in Brandon.

Ian Tookenay, Hunter Koles, Lauren Vold, Parker Orchard, Noah Loveday, Cole Tymkin, and Brett Hahkala are part of the squad that will later compete for the Ontario title.





Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team hits the road for the first of two games to close out play in NORWOSSA.

The Muskies are in Sioux Lookout tonight and Dryden tomorrow.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team begins play in the Section 7-A championship with a home game against Proctor - 7 pm at Bronco arena.

The 15 and 8 Broncos are ranked fourth.

The boys team is in Baudette to play Lake of the Woods.

The Broncos girls basketball team faces Greenway - 7:15 at Falls High School.

A pair of wins yesterday is keeping Trevor Bonot of Stratton in the hunt for the Northern Ontario men's curling title in Sault Ste. Marie.

Bonot's foursome scored a 7-1 win over Colin Koivala of Thunder Bay and a 9-4 decision over North Bay's David McInnis to sit tied for seconds with three other rinks at 4 and 2.

Mike Jakubo of Copper Cliff leads the field with a 6-and-oh record.




Fort Frances Muskies court team took three of four games from Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.

The senior boys basketball team all but clinched its division with a 42-18 win.

The juniors leaped past the Broncos for top stop with a 31-30 victory.

The Muskies junior girls volleyball team assured itself at least second place overall with a 3-set win over Kenora

The senior girls lost their match in four.

The game this time in Dryden.

Stratton's Trevor Bonot is in the middle of the pack at the Northern Ontario men's curling playdown in Sault Ste. Marie.

Bonot lost 7-1 to Mike Jakubo of Cooper Cliff in an afternoon draw before rebounding for a 7-4 win over Robbie Gordon last night to sit tied for fifth at 2 and 2.

Meantime, the Jeff Currie rink with area resident Mike Badiuk as lead is also 2 and 2.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team scored a 3-1 win over Lake of the Bears.

Hailey Clendenning, Shilo Beck and Katie Sinclair provided the scoring while Calie Clendenning stopped 22 shots in net for the night.

Tonight the Muskies host Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos - 6:45 pm at the Ice for Kids Arena.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team lost to Cherry 60-56.




Fort Frances Muskies court teams are in Kenora for their final road trip in NORWOSSA league play of the year.

They have games against the Beaver Brae Broncos.

Local Sports for Monday February 6


Half of a 20-member Fort Frances Aquanauts swim team medaled at the regional championships in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

Adam Stromberg and Donovan Taylor were multiple gold Medalists and captured the high point trophies in their respective age divisions

Other medalists include Mitchell Riordon, Joshua Cousineau, Levi Rittau, Cole Trimble on the boys side.

Jillian Gustafson, Regan Danylchuck, Kaela Lowey and Sarah Rittau had podium finishes on the girls side.




Ben Whitburn scored twice to help the Fort Frances Holmlund Leafs to a 6-1 over Westfort to win the Bantam B title at the Elks Central Canada minor hockey tournament in Thunder Bay.

Ian Friesen scored two minutes into overtime to give the Emo Stars a 4-3 win over the Fort William Canadiens for the midget B crown.

Fort Frances Canadians double-A team finished fourth overall in the pee-wee division.



The bantam Skates and Blades took silver at a girls hockey played at the Memorial Sports Centre, losing 4-3 to Warroad in the final.

The BDO Stars earned bronze with a 4-3 win over Dryden.

In the midget division, Pharmasave Wildcats and ACO Electric Chargers battled it out for the consolation championship with the Chargers winning 3-1.



Rainy River Voyaguers women's hockey team split a pair of home games with Minot State, losing 1-0 and winning yesterday 4-0.

Katie Stearns stopping 22 shots for the shut out.




Fort Frances Lakers lost 3-2 to Sioux Lookout Saturday in a game played at the Ice for Kids Arena.



Alyssa Penner scored the winning goal as the Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team edged Dryden Friday 2-1.



Area bantam curling teams missed out on their change to attend next month's Ontario Winter Games.

Murray Armstrong of Stratton finished the boy's playdown at the Fort Frances Curling Club with a 1 and 6 record.

Zacharia Warkentin of Thunder Bay topped the event going 7 and 0.

And Jessica Haw of Stratton also went one and six at the girls playdown in Longlac.

Local Sports for Friday February 3


A tough start for two area bantam curling rinks.

Matthew Armstrong's Stratton rink was shut out 13-nothing by Sudbury's Tanner Horgan in their first game at the bantam boys provincial playdown at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

Armstrong's rink faces Kevin Gravel of Smooth Rock Falls at 9:30 a.m. this morning.

Haw plays Krysta Burns of Sudbury this morning.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated the Dryden Eagles 4-3.

Jeff Davis, Cole Godbout, Josh Gwinn and Ryan Windigo scoring for the Muskies.

The Muskies girls hockey team resumes play in NORWOSSA tonight for the first time since the middle of January with a game in Dryden.



Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team is in tournament play in Kenora.




International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Warroard 78-72.

The girls team won its second straight, 54-49 over Mesabi East.


The Broncos boys hockey team lost to Hibbing 3-2.

The girls team ended their regular season with a 3-nothing win over Eveleth-Gilbert.





Fort Frances Lakers and Dryden Ice Dogs renew acquaintances at the Ice for Kids Arena tonight.




The Dogs came from behind to win in a shoot out in their last meeting Monday.

Local Sports for Thursday February 2


Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball teams picked up two more wins yesterday.

The senior boys beat the Dryden Eagles 38-30.

The juniors dominated the Eagles 53-21.


The Muskies girls volleyball teams not as fortunate.

The seniors were swept in three sets while the juniors took the Eagles to four before bowing to the visitors.




Fort Frances Lakers are getting some scouting help.

Trevor Lang will serve as the team's director of scouting for the rest of this year.

Lang stepped down as the Thunder Bay North Stars GM Monday.

The Lakers will also be getting scouting help from Jason Firth, who was the Stars assistant coach until this week.

Local Sports for Wednesday February 1

A seventh round of shooters was needed before the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team was able to eek out a 7-6 win win over Kenora's Thomas Aquinas Saints.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team edged the Fort Frances Muskies 3-2 in a game played in the Falls.



Erik Lassila had the hat trick as the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team thumbed Two Harbours 7-2.




On the court, the Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team went on a 20-9 tear in the second half to defeat the Beaver Brae Broncos 40-26.

The junior boys held on for a 35-32 win.

The junior girls volleyball team rallied from being down 2-0, only to loss to Beaver Brae in five sets

The seniors were swept in three.



The International Falls Broncos boys basketball team lost 67-66 to Virginia.



The girls team defeated Deer River 78-61.




Jason Buffington of Minnesota has set a new record in winning the run portion of the Arrowhead 135.

Buffington was the first runner to cross the line at Tower last night, in just over 37 hours from Monday's race start in International Falls.

Casey Krueger of Minnesota won the ski division yesterday while Kevin Breitenback of Alaska won the bike course Monday.
