Local Sports for Tuesday April 26

Rainy River High School will be represented at next months all-Ontario badminton championships.

Courtney Hanson went four-and-oh to win the NWOSSA title in senior girls singles last week in Marathon and a berth to the provincials.

Skylar Aprin claimed the junior girls title by winning all five game she played in Marathon.



A member of the Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team has been named a co-winner of the pitcher of the week honours in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference's northern division.

J.C. Crane, who pitched a 2-hit shutout against Vermilion Friday, shares the award with a player from Hibbing.



Wet fields is forcing a delay to the start of the Emo Youth Soccer seaspn.

Play was to begin tonight.

Instead it will begin Tuesday May 3.

Local Sports for Wednesday April 20

Former Fort Frances Sabre Mitch Cain will be playing closer to home next season.

The 6'2", 205 lb forward from Fort Frances has signed on to play for Bemidji State University.

He finished this year second in scoring with Des Moines of the USHL.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team dropped both ends of a doubled header with Northland College.

they lost the opener 1-0 and had to forfeit the second after an injury left them without enough players to complete the game.

The Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team will be without its leading scorer next season.

Brenley Anderson of Rainy River will be playing for the University of Manitoba Bisons.

Anderson led the ACHA in scoring this year and was named the top player in Division II.

Local Sports for Monday April 18

A bucket full of medals for the Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim team at the Swim Ontario Division III championships in Thunder Bay.

16-year-old Donovan Taylor and 12-year-old Adam Stromberg topped with five gold medals each.

14-year-old Levi Rittau captured 2 silvers and a bronze.

12-year-old Regan Danylchuk ended up with a silver and a bronze

12-year-old Lyndsi-Jo Wilson took a Bronze home while 9-year-old Sarah Rittau came back with a silver.



Two members of the Fort Frances Badminton club earned medals at the Manitoba Junior Badminton Tournament in Winnipeg

Taylor Whitehead captured gold in the under 13 boys doubles and a bronze in boys singles.

Anika Alexander won three silver in the under 16 Girls' singles, doubles and mixed doubles

Local Sports for Friday April 15

Fort Frances Thunderhawks is one game away from reaching the Allan Cup finals.

The Hawks defeated the host Kenora Thistles 5-3 last night to advance to a semi-final game against the Bentley Generals of Alberta.

A win will give Fort Frances its first appearance in the final since the Canadians 1952 win.


Falls High School boys track team finished first overall at the Bronco Booster Invitational held in the Falls.

Shawn Filipiak and Reggie Gordon each scored a pair of event wins in leading the boys team.

The girls team finished second with the relay teams picking up three first place finishes while Alicia Hendrickson was tops in the pole vault and triple jump.

College softball from Wednesday saw the Rainy River Voyageurs women's team split games with Central Lakes College, losing the opener 11-2 before coming back for an 8-4 win in the second.



Steve Arpin found himself behind the wheel of a new race car this week.

Arpin was one of a number of drivers testing a new Legends Modified Dirt Car.

The cars were developed by former Nascar owner Ray Evernham.

Local Sports for Thursday April 14

Fort Frances Thunderhawks will face the host Kenora Thistles in a playoff game at the Allan Cup tournament in Kenora tonight.

The Thunderhawks lost both of their round robin games while the Thistles finished second in their pool with a one and one record.



A Rainy River woman is up for the title of coach of the year by the Coaches Association of Ontario

Rebecca Tolen is one of six finalists for the award that's voted on by the public.

Tolen, the librarian at Rainy River High School, helped start the soccer program in the community and now coaches the senior basketball teams and girls soccer.

Voting will conclude midnight Sunday.

Two members of the Rainy River High School badminton team have won NorWossa titles.

Courtney Hanson went 5-and-oh to win in senior girls singles while Skylar Aprin did the same in junior girls singles yesterday in Red Lake.

Justin Moen was third in senior boys singles, but will join Hanson at the NWossa championships next week in Marathon.

Arpin will also attend, but the juniors will compete in exhibition play.

Local Sports for Wednesday April 13

Fort Frances Thunderhawks fell 3-1 to Clarenville, Newfoundland at the Allan Cup tournament in Kenora.

The lose leaves the Hawks at the bottom of its division and forced to play an extra playoff game if their to reach the final four.



The Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs continue to celebrate their NCAA men's hockey championship.

Joe Basaraba of Fort Frances says it was a great win in his first year with the team.

"I knew coming in we were going to have a great team," says Basaraba. "When we all came here last August, our goal was to win a national championship. Now that our goal has been fulfilled, it's been a pretty amazing feeling, not only for us, but for the program, the school and everything."

Basaraba says there has been a great response to UMD's win all through Minnesota.



Falls High School boys track relay teams finished first overall at the Warrior-Eagle Relay event.

The team earn first place finishes in the 4 by 400, 4 by 800 and 800, 24-hundred and 32-hundred metres sprint medleys.

Local Sports for Tuesday April 12

Fort Frances Thunderhawks have lost their first game at the Allan Cup tournament in Kenora.

The Hawks were beaten 6-3 by the South East Prairie Thunder of Manitoba

They play Clarenville, Newfoundland this afternoon.



For the second time in three weeks, a member of the Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team has been named northern division player of the week by the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.

J.C. Crane went 10 for 14 at the dish with 3 doubles and 8 RBI's in the Voyaguers four games with Anoka-Ramsay on the weekend.

Maury Nielson's Stratton rink failed in its attempt to earn a spot to the Dominion Curling Club championship in November.

Nielson's foursome earned just a single win at a provincial event in Sault Ste. Marie on the weekend.



The Minnesota Duluth hockey team has been making the rounds in the Twin Cities after the Bulldogs became NCAA champions Saturday.

U-M-D beat Michigan 3-2 in overtime - former Fort Frances Muskies Joe Basaraba a part of that team.

Yesterday, the team was honoured before the Twins game at Target Field and guests at the Wild's game at Xcel Energy Centre.

Jordan Davis of Devlin has been named captain of the Topeka Roadrunners of the North American Hockey League.

An injury to the team's usual captain forced the change as the team is in the middle of the first round of the playoffs.

Davis joined the team after two seasons with the Fort William North Stars in the SIJHL.

Local Sports for Friday April 8

Former Fort Frances Muskie Joe Basaraba had an assist in the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 4-3 win over Notre Dame.

The win advances the Bulldogs to the NCAA title game in men's hockey against Michigan tomorrow night in St. Paul.



Fort Frances High School will sent six players to next week's NorWossa badminton championships in Red Lake.

Rory Bagacki in senior boys singles and Bryson Skirten in junior boys went unbeaten in this week's qualifier in Atikokan.

Robert Stevens and Spencer Pearce finished second in senior boys doubles while Andre Emond and Samatha Stahn advanced with a third place showing in junior mixed doubles.

No word if any players from Rainy River or Atikokan High Schools advanced.



Shawn Filipiak picked up wins in high jump and the triple jump in leading the Falls High School boys track team to a first place finish at a meet in Nashwauk.

Local Sports for Wednesday April 7

Falls High School boys track team finished seventh out of 23 teams an indoor meeting in Bemidji yesterday.

Shawn Filipiak finished first in high jump and fourth in the 60 metre hurdles.

Jake Jenson was second in the pole vault.

The team's 4 by 800 relay team earned a third place finish in its event.




High School Badminton players from across the region gather in Atikokan today for a NorWossa qualifier.

Winners advance to the championships slated for next Tuesday in Red Lake.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team's home opener with Fond du Lac was postponed due to poor field conditions.

The games will be made up at a later date.

Local Sports for Tuesday April 5

It appears there will be soccer played in the Borderland this summer.

The Borderland Soccer League has been able to fill vacancies on its board with Victor Sousa taking over as president.

Chris Faragher will serve as a vice-president for the men's division while Amy Wilson-Hand takes on similar duties for the women.



The Rainy River Voyaguers women's softball team went 2-and-4 to open its season on the weekend.

The Voyageurs scored wins over Hibbing and Vermilion in games played indoors at the Irish Dome in Minneapolis, but suffered loses to Dakota College-Bottineau, Anoka-Ramsay, Minnesota West and Vermilion.

The women host Fond Du Lac today at 3 p.m.




The field for this month's strongman competition in Fort Frances is beginning to take shape.

Nine participants have signed up so.

The include Jose Plante, the 2008 Ontario Strongest Man, Minnesota's 2010 Strongest Man Joel Dircks and Luke Skaarup of Fort Frances whose coming off a season opening win in Winnipeg.

The event will be held April 29 as part of the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce home show.

Local Sports for Monday April 4

Brenley Anderson of Rainy River has been named ACHA women's division two player of the year.

The member of the champion Rainy River Voyageurs led the ACHA with 46 goals and 70 points in just 21 games.

Teammate Jessie Baker of Emo, who finished second in scoring, was named to the All-American second all-star team.

Defenceman Jenna Brady of North Dakota and netminder Katie Stearns of Fort Frances were honourable mentions.
