Local Sports for Tuesday January 31


Fort Frances Lakers gave up the tying goal 13 seconds left in regulation then lost 4-3 in a shoot out to the visiting Dryden Ice Dogs at the Memorial Sports Centre last night.

Lakers had led 3-1 in the third on goals from Jordan Larson, Ryan Wildman and Brandon Fehd.




Members of the Border Skating Club earned a handful of gold medals at the Sunset Country Regional Skating Championships on the weekend in Kenora.

Alina Eldridge earned three first place finishes while Sophie Potvin-Begin took two firsts.

Jamie Spencer also won in Junior Bronze solo dance.

Kevin Breitenbrek of Alaska has won the bike portion the Arrowhead 135 from International Falls to Tower

Breitenbrek crossed the finish by a wheel length ahead of Tim Bernston, also of Alaska.

The ski and run portions of the event continue.

Local Sports for Monday January 30


A Devlin woman is off to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Jenna Enge is a member of the Tracy Horgan's Sudbury rink that won the provincial curling title in Kenora on the weekend.




Fort France Canadians AA midget team captured a tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota with an 8-nothing win over a team from Montana in the final.

Sam Berube and Brandon Sinclair each had a pair of goals with singles from Lucas Koomans, Tyler Fontana, Gabe Handorgan and Dylan Grinsell.

Canadians went undefeated, giving up just one goal along the way.




Skates and Blades bantam girls hockey team was a tournament winner in Dryden.

Pharmasave Wildcats won bronze in the midget division of the same tournament while the ACO Electric Chargers placed fourth.




Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team swept South Dakota State 6-1 and 3-2.

Katie Stearns of Fort Frances earned both wins in net.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team doubled up Kittson Central Friday 10-5 then beat Red Lake Falls Saturday 7-4.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team lost to Grand Rapids Friday 4-3

The Broncos boys basketball team beat Mesabi East Friday 82-58.




The Arrowhead Ultra is under way.

Participants from around the world are running, biking or skiing the 135 mile route from International Falls to Tower.









Local Sports for Friday January 27


Bryon Katapaytuk scored twice, but the Fort Frances Lakers lost 5-2 to the Wisconsin Wilderness in a game played on neutral ice in Virginia.

The win for the Wilderness was their 20th straight.

The Lakers are home to Duluth tonight.




Rachel Homan of Ottawa remains perfect heading into the final day of round robin play at the Ontario Tournament of Hearts in Kenora.

Homan is 7 and 0, assuring her rink a spot in the playoff.

Cathy Auld of Mississauga and Sudbury's Tracey Wilde hold down second spot.

Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville slipped to third.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team is in tournament play in Winnipeg.

They face Red Lake this morning to open play.

The boys team, meantime, plays an exhibition game in Kittson, Minnesota.




International Falls Broncos girls basketball team extended its win streak to four games with a 66-58 win over Littlefork-Big Falls.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team is home to Moose Lake - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The Broncos lost 3-1 to Hibbing last night.

The boys hockey team is at Grad Rapids.

The boys basketball team is home to Mesabi East.




An atom AA tournament goes this weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Finals take place Sunday.

Rachel Homan of Ottawa improved to five and oh with a pair of wins yesterday at the Ontario Tournament of Hearts curling playdown in Kenora.

Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville and Cathy Auld of Mississauga improved to 4-1 to share second spot.

Local Sports for Tuesday January 25


Fort Frances Lakers picked up a win yesterday without being on the ice.

The SIJHL has awarded a 1-0 victory to the Lakers in their January 18 game with Dryden after determining the Ice Dogs had dressed 21 players, one more than allowed by Hockey Canada.

The Lakers had lost that game 6-4.



Brett Musich had a five-goal night as the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team defeated Ely 9-1.



Four players reached double digits in scoring as the Broncos boys basketball team beat Eveleth-Gilbert 82-32.

Gunnar Anderson led all Broncos with 17 points.



Rachel Homan of Ottawa is alone at the top of the standings at the Ontario women's Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kenora.

Homan is 3 and 0 after yesterday's draws.

Five teams, including Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville, are tied for second at 2 and 1.

Former Ontario champions Sherry Middaugh and Jenna Hanna were among first draw winners at the provincial women's curling championship opening last night in Kenora.

Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville lost her opening game, 7-4 to Rachel Homan of Ottawa.

Second draw action goes this afternoon.




Girls hockey from last night saw the Calder Legal Eagles edge the Rolling Lake Lighting 2-1 in an atom division game.

Sydney Korkola and Kendra Calder scored for the Eagles

Meghan Bruyere replied for the Lightning.

Annalise Hayes recorded the hat trick in the Lakewood Tire Eagles 3-0 win over Super 8 in the pee wee division.


In weekend action for girls hockey teams, the Rolling Lake Lightning scored a pair of wins over Dryden, 9-2 and 3-2

Meghan Bruyere had 7 goals in the opening game.

Super 8 captured bronze at a pee wee tournament in Dryden while Kaemingh Esso lost in the bronze medal game in Kenora.

Lakewood Tire won that tournament.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team won its third straight, defeating Lake of the Woods 65-58

Local Sports for Monday January 16


Jordan Larson's goal, two minutes left in the third period, lifted the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-4 victory over the Duluth Clydesdales.

Steve Terry and Byron Katapaytuk each scored twice.

Tanner Hamilton made 30 stops for the win.

Fort Frances Lakers had their seven game winning streak snapped Saturday night in a 2-0 loss to Wisconsin.




Rainy River Voyaguers women's hockey team lost its first game of the year, a 1-0 decision to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Saturday.

Friday, the Voyagers defeated them 2-1.




Ryan Windigo scored twice as the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos Friday 5-1

Robbie Rae, Bradon Keast and Hunter Leishman also found the twine for the Muskies.




Fort Frances Firemen and Atikokan reached the quarterfinals of the pee-wee division at the Robin's tournament in Thunder Bay.

Atikokan finished sixth in Novice B.

Atikokan teams also competed in the Atom A and Bantam A divisions, but failed to make the playoff rounds.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team defeated Park Rapids and Brainard this weekend by identical 5-2 scores.

The boys team beat Greenway Friday 5-2.






Fort Frances Muskies junior girls volleyball team split squads to earn gold at a tournament in Thunder Bay.

The Gold squad defeated Rainy River 14-25, 25-23 and 15-13 for the win.

The Black team placed 6th overall.

The Muskies also finished third on the senior side of the same tournament, beating Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.



Lenea Rash netted 34 points as the Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team defeated Itasca Saturday 72-61.

The men's team lost 90-66..

Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team makes a return trip to Kenora today.

They play St. Thomas Aquinas Saints.

Muskies lost to Beaver Brae on Tuesday.




Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball and girls volleyball teams are home to Beaver Brae for a series of games this afternoon.




International Falls Broncos girls basketball team is home to Grand Rapids - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High School.



In girls hockey Lakewood Tire Eagles doubled up Kaemingh Esso 4-2 in peewee action.

Annalise Hayes scored all 4 goals for the Eagles

Emma Noga replied with both goals for Esso.

In a late score from Monday, Kaemingh Esso defeated Super 8 7-1 in a pee-wee division matchup.

Noga had three goals for Esso in that game.

Fort Frances Muskies court teams split games played in Dryden.

The junior boys basketball team held on for a 39-33 win over the Eagles.

The junior girls volleyball took Dryden to a five set victory.

The senior boys basketball team fell 55-39 while the senior girls volleyball team lost in four sets to Dryden.




International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Greenway 68-34.

The girls team defeated Warroad 67-50.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team was shutout by Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos 4-0.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team edged Virginia 2-1.

The Broncos girls hockey defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 5-2.

Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team travels to Kenora for a NORWOSSA league game against the Beaver Brae Broncos.

The Muskies have beaten the Broncos in two tournament games, but are winless in two previous league games.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team continues a lengthy home stand with a game tonight against Virginia - 7:30 p.m. at Broncos Arena.

The girls team in at Evelth-Gilbert.




High school action on the court sees Fort Frances Muskies teams traveling to Dryden for games against the Eagles.

The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team travels to Warroad.

The boys basketball team hosts




For the second week in a row, Rainy River Voyageur's Lenae Rash has been named female player of the week in the MCAC's northern division.

The sophomore guard from Milwaukee averaged 27 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games on the weekend

Fort Frances native Tirzah Keffer fell short in her bid to win the northern Ontario junior women's curling championship in Sioux Lookout.

A loss to the eventual winner, Kendra Lilly of Sudbury Saturday, knocked Keffer, who now curls out of the Port Arthur Club, out of contention.




Brennan Wark's Port Arthur rink earned his ticket to the national men's juniors after capturing the northern Ontario crown in Atikokan.

He defeated Dustin Montpellier of Sudbury in the final game 7-3.




Trevor Bonot of Stratton scored twice an extra end to defeat Adam Bolen of Fort Frances 9-7 to win a men's regional curling playdown at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

His rink advances to a qualifying event for the northern Ontario championship later this month.




Brett Hakala provided all of the scoring as the Fort Frances Canadians AA peewee team defeated International Falls 3-1 to win its home-tournament played at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Matt Booth got the victory between the pipes.




Byron Katapaytuk scored the game winner with less than 2-minutes remaining to power the Fort Frances Lakers to a 3-1 win over Thunder Bay Saturday.

The Lakers have now won 7 straight.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team was bounced from the quarter finals of the Piper Classic tournament in Winnipeg in a 5-1 loss to the eventual champions Edge Gold Mountainers.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team splits a pair of weekend games, winning Friday 3-2 over Duluth-Denfeld, but suffering a 7-1 defeat to Hermantown Saturday.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team split games played in a tournament at Thief River Falls, defeating Dakota College 72-56 before losing to Bismark 103-57.

The men's team lost twice 103-95 to Dakota in overtime and 115-78 to Bismark.

Four rinks remain unbeaten following the first day of competition at the northern Ontario junior men's curling championship at the Atikokan Curling Club.

Jordan Potter and Brennan Wark of the Port Arthur Curling Club, Dustin Montpellier of Sudbury and Nick Dawson of the Soo are all 2-0.

Third draw goes at 9:30 a.m. EST today.




Fort Frances native Tirzah Keffer is in a three-way tie for first at the northern Ontario junior women's curling championship in Sioux Lookoout.

Keefer, now skipping a rink out of the Port Arthur Curling Club, scored first day wins over Danielle Ouelletee of Longlac and Chloe Gordon of Copper Cliff.

Her rink plays Megan Szajewski of Keewatin in their third game this morning.




Three rinks, two from the Rainy River district, will duke it out this weekend in a men's qualifying event at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

It's the first step towards gaining the northern Ontario spot in this year brier.

Trevor Bonot of Stratton faces John Cummine of Sioux Lookout tonight at 9:30 to open play.

Adam Bolen of Fort Frances is also entered.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team begins play at the Pipper Classic tournament in Winnipeg with a game this morning against Kelvin.




Girls hockey from earlier this week saw the Calder Legal Eagles and Rolling Lake Lightning tie 2-2 Wednesday night.

 Kamryn Singleton and Sydney Korkola scored for the Eagles

Brenna Weir and Meghan Bruyere replied for the Lightning

And in a pee-wee game, the Emo boys team defeated the Norfab Flames 3-2

Sullivan Shortreed with two and Dakota Medicine scored for Emo

Janelle Kaemingh and Jenna Clendenning replied for the Flames.



International Falls broncos girls baskeball team defeated Virginia  61-57.

Atikokan Curling Club plays host to the northern Ontario junior men's curling playdown.

Eight teams from Kenora, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Smooth Rock Falls are vying for the right to represent the region at next month's national championship in Napanee.

Play begins this afternoon at 2 p.m EST.




Fort Frances native Tirzah Keffer skips one of women's teams at northern Ontario junior women's curling championship, beginning today in Sioux Lookout.

Keffer, who now curls out of the Port Arthur Curling Club, is joined by clubs from Kenora, Thunder Bay, Copper Cliff, Longlac and Sudbury.

Local Sports for Wednesday January 4


Jordan Larson scored his league-leading 27th of the season in helping the Fort Frances Lakers to a 7-2 win over Sioux Lookout at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Jon Carlson, Steve Terry, Bryan Broders, Adam Wensley, Byron Katapaytuk and Davis Smith also replied for the Lakers who have now won five straight.




Christian Kittelson had a hat trick in the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team's 10-0 shellacking of Eveleth.

Lucas Debenedet with two, Mason Meyer, Joel Skirten, Colton Lafrance and Jack Bragg rounded out the Bronco scoring.



The Broncos girls basketball team lost Northeast Range 61-41.



Fort Frances Canadians AA peewee netminder Parker Orchard was the winner of a skills competition on the weekend in Bemidji.




The city of International Falls bid to be the Capital of the State of Hockey in Minnesota has come to an abrupt end.

The city has been beaten out by Duluth in second round voting of the NHL's Minnesota Wild's on-line contest.

Local Sports for Tuesday January 3


The Fort Frances Canadians pee-wee team finished out of the medals at the Paul Bunyan International Hockey Tournament in Bemidji over the New Year's weekend.

The Canadians ended the tournee with a 4-3 loss to Brainard in the C-side consolation final.

This coming weekend, the Canadians host a tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre with teams from International Falls, Dryden, Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay expected.
