Local Sports for Thursday September 29


Christin Thompson of Fort Frances shot a second round 81 at a LPGA qualifying event in Florida.

She's 21 shots back of the leaders and sits tied for 225th overall.

The top seventy advance to the next level of qualifying.




Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team lost in five sets to Central Lakes by scores of 15-25, 25-18, 25-18, 14-25 and 10-15.

They host Vermilion tomorrow.



Falls High School girls cross country run team is ranked eleventh among Class A schools in Minnesota.

The poll by the Minnesota Coaches Association comes following the team's first place finish in Ely Tuesday.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 28


Fort Frances Muskies court teams swept their opponents from Kenora's Beaver Brae High School to earn their first wins of the NORWOSSA season.

The senior girls basketball team won 11-10 while the junior girls won 38-23.

The senior boys volleyball team defeated Kenora in 4-sets, 25-13, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-14.

The junior boys won in three, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23.




International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team lost a 5-set match to Virgina, dropping the first two by scores of 17-25 and 24-26 before rallying for 28-26 and 25-22 wins to tie.

The Broncos lost in the final set 14-16.




Sydney Raboin ran to a first place finish in helping the Falls High School girls cross-country run team to top spot overall at a meet in Ely.

Lexi Erickson, Amber Harms and Amy Auran also finished in the top ten.

The boys team was third with Marco Griffith leading the way in 10th.

Cale Tatsak was 6th and Ian Ducharme 9th in the sophomore boys division.

Local Sports for Tuesday September 27


Fort Frances Lakers Jordan Larson has been named player of the week in the SIJHL.

The 16-year-old rookie from Fort Frances had 3 goals and 7 assists in helping the Lakers earn wins in three of four games last week.





Two members of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team has received honours from the Minnesota Athletic Conference Association.

Kelly Sorensen, a sophomore from Roseau, was named the northern division's Libero of the Week.

Tiffany Schumacher, a sophomore from Richmond, was named All-Around Player of the Week.




Northwest Bay won a slo-pitch tournament held in Rainy River First Nation on the weekend.

They defeated Couchiching 25-14 in the final.




The Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team hosted its first ever alumni double-header Sunday at Scheela Field with the current team beating the Alumni, 3-0 and 8-0.

The Voyageurs will begin their off-season training and workouts at the end of this week.




Atikokan Voyageurs court teams are played their NORWOSSA home openers Monday.

The boys volleyball and girls basketball teams were playing Rainy River but no results have been received.



Local Sports for Monday September 26

Oliver and Jason Gibbons of Sleeman captured the Rainy River Walleye tournament for a record fourth time.

The pair reeled in just under 23 pounds of walleye.




Fort Frances Lakers have moved into first in the SIJHL.

Jordan Larson had a goal and three assists as the Lakers dumped Duluth 6-2.

They also won Friday 6-3 at home over Wisconsin, before dropping a 1-0 game to the Wilderness Saturday in Wisconsin.




Fort Frances Muskies junior boys volleyball team split into two teams with one earning silver at a weekend tournament in Dryden.

The team lost to Dryden in the final.

The other squad finished fourth overall.




Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team went undefeated to win a tournament in St. Cloud, beating Oak Hills Colleges, Vermilion, and Mesabi in straight sets.

Friday, the Voyageurs lost a game to St. Cloud Tech in 3 sets.




High School football from Friday saw the Fort Frances Muskies lose 23-7 to Sisler.

The International Falls Broncos fell 33-16 to Cloquet.




Five members of the Borderland Roller Derby League were on the winning side of a 110-97 game in Coleraine.

The Fort Freakshow gals joined with ladies from Thunder Bay and Chippewa Valley for the win over a team made up of skaters from Grand Rapids, Fergus Falls and Jamestown, North Dakota.




The Borderland Go-Karting Club wrapped up its season on the weekend.

Raice Westover won the Novice class feature with Justin Besch and Gina Boyum taking the heats.

Tristan Badiuk claimed the advance class feature while Wyatt Boyum won both heats.

Local Sports for Friday September 23


Fort Frances Muskies court teams were swept by Dryden in their NorWossa openers.

The girls senior basketball team lost 30-25 after leading 17-12 at the half.

The juniors were edged 38-27.

The junior boys volleyball team lost in four sets by scores of 21-25, 25-22,25-27 and 11-25.

The senior boys also lost in four sets.

The girls basketball and junior boys volleyball teams are in tournament play this weekend.




Fort Frances Muskies football team have their homecoming game today at Muskie field.

The 1-and-1 Muskies face Sisler at 1 p.m.

International Falls Broncos are home to Cloquet, 7 p.m. at Bronco Stadium




Fort Frances Lakers are back home tonight.

They play the defending SIJHL champions Wisconsin Wilderness at the Memorial Sports Centre.




Rainy River Walleye tournament begins today.

Brian and Jim Ney are the defending champions.

Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team scored a three-set victory over Hibbing last night.

Scores were 25-20, 25-12 and 25-9.

Tiffany Schumacher led with 12 kills while Nakita Estling had 31 set assists.



Fort Frances Muskies court teams open NorWossa play today in Dryden.



Falls High School girls swim team hosts Mesabi East.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 21


It took 14 shooters before Adam Wensley potted the winning goal in a shootout as the Fort Frances Lakers edged the Dryden Ice Dogs 5-4 last night in Dryden.

Wensley, Jordan Larson with his league-leading fourth of the season, Ryan Wildman and Jaret Leclair scored in regulation.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team lost in 3 sets to Lake of the Woods in Baudette by scores of 16-25, 12-25 and 5-25.




Falls High School girls cross country run team failed to place anyone in the top 10, but still finished second overall at a meet in Bagley.

The boys team placed 8th.

Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team was defeated in five sets by Bismark.

Scores were 27-25, 13-25, 26-28, 25-18 and 15-9.




Atikokan High School's court teams are in Ignace today.

The boys volleyball and girls basketball teams were in Sioux Lookout yesterday, but no scores have been received.




Fort Frances Lakers make their first road trip of the new S-I-J-H-L campaign.

They travel to Dryden to face the Ice Dogs.

Meantime, Bram Erikson of the Wisconsin Wilderness was named player of the week.

Local Sports for Monday September 19

Fort Frances Lakers split their weekend home opener in the S-I-J-H-L, winning 4-3 in a shootout Friday against the Thunder Bay North Stars, but dropped a 4-2 decision Saturday to Sioux Lookout.

The Lakers are in Dryden tomorrow.



Falls High School girls swim team placed 6th at a meet Saturday in Hibbing.

The team picked up no medal.



 International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team defeated Duluth-Marsall Friday in four sets, 26-24, 25-15, 12-25 and 25-12.



International Falls Broncos football team was defeated Friday by Proctor 38-16.


Fort Frances Muskies defeated Winnipeg's Tec Voc 14-2.

Harley Mainville scored both of the Muskies touchdown.



Steve Arpin set a new track record in capturing the poll in Friday's NASCAR truck series race at Chicago.

He ended the race in 16th.



Several area runners participated in the Miles to the Giant event in Thunder Bay.

Cindy McKinnon and Jane Wyder of Fort Frances placed fourth and fifth respectively in their age category in the marathon.

Darryl Gannon of Atikokan was 14th overall in the men's half marathon.

Dennis Ogilvie of Emo was 16th.

Holly Armstrong of Atikokan was 14th among the women.

Local Sports for Friday September 16

Steve Arpin concludes his five-race ride with Turner Motorsports in NASCAR's truck series tonight in Chicago.

The race can be seen on Speed-TV at 7 p.m. CDT.

Arpin has finished within the top 15 in three previous races with a low of 23rd in his first race at Texas earlier this year.



Falls High School girls swim teams easily outscored their opponents from Northeast Ridge and Ely yesterday.

The varsity girls won nine of 12 events with Breanna Shofner earning two individual victories.

The junior team swept all 11 events.



Sydney Raboin finished 3rd as the Falls High School girls cross country run team finished fourth at a meet in Eveleth.

The boys team was sixth while the junior boys placed second on the strenth of Eric Mathews 2nd place finish.



The International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team was swept in three games by Greenway.

They play Duluth Marshall - 7:30 p.m. tonight at Falls High.



Plenty on tap in high school sports on both sides of the border today.

The Fort Frances Muskies senior boys volleyball team opens its season with a tournament in Kenora.

The Muskies senior girls basketball team is in tournament play in Thunder Bay.

On the grid iron, the Muskies travel to Winnipeg to play Tec Voc.

The Broncos are at Proctor.



Fort Frances Lakers open their SIJHL season with a home game tonight against the Thunder Bay North Stars.

Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team was defeated in its home opener by Northland Community College in three sets, 25-9, 26-24 and 25-20

The Voyageurs were led by Katrina Wreggitt of Fort Frances with 7 kills.

The ladies travel to Cloquet Saturday to take on the Thunder from Fond du Lac.

Local Sports for Tuesday September 13

Fort Frances Lakes have ended their pre-season in the SIJHL with a perfect record.

Bryon Katapaytuk, Colton Spicer and Henry Gutierrez each scored twice as the Lakers upended the Wisconsin Wilderness 8-5.

The Lakers won all four of their exhibition games played and will open the regular season Friday at home against Thunder Bay.



Falls High School boys and girls cross country run teams finished second overall at a meet in Warroad.

Sydney Raboin led the varsity girls team with a 6th place finish while Marco Griffiths was tops for the boys in 14th.

The boys junior team also placed second in its division with 3 runners in the top ten, including Eric Mathews who was 3rd.

Local Sports for Monday September 12

Fort Frances strongman Luke Skaarup set a new Canadian record in the atlas stone lift to earn a third place finish overall at a strongman competition in Dubreuivlle, Quebec.

Skaarup's lift was 454 pounds.



Fort Frances Lakers swept a pair of exhibition games at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The Lakers first whitewashed Sioux Lookout Friday 10-nothing, then beat Wisconsin yesterday 6-4.

The Lakers are in Wisconsin tonight for the rematch with the Wilderness.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team took 3rd place at a tournament in Itasca.

The Voyageurs defeated Anoka-Ramsey, Mesabi and Gogebic, losing only to Northland.

Friday, the ladies opened play in the MCAC northern division with a 3-set loss to Itasca.



Fort Frances Muskies football team was blanked 36-nothing by St. Norbert in the opener of the Winnipeg High School Football League Friday.

The International Falls Broncos defeated Virgina 40-16 in their home opener Friday.



Motocross racing at Emo has wrapped up for another year.

Bob Leblanc of Thunder Bay was the big winner, taking home titles in the Open, Pro-AM and Over 25 classes.

Local Sports for Friday September 9

A five-goal second period helped the Fort Frances Lakers to an 8-4 win over the Sioux Lookout Flyers in a SIJHL exhibition game in Sioux Lookout.

Henry Gutierrez scored twice with singles from Diego Breckenridge, Wayne Folster, Jaret Leclair, Bryon Katapaytuk, Spencer Korum and Davis Smith.

The two teams play again tonight, 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Sport Centre.



Ryan Wildman and Jordan Larson of the Fort Frances Lakers have been selected to try out for Team Canada West that will compete in this year's World Junior A Challenge.

They're among 60 players from across western Canada who will participate in a week-long evaluation camp next week in Penticton.



Falls High School girls cross country run team took first at a meet in Roseau.

Broncos runners took three top ten spots, led by Sydney Raboin in 3rd, Lexi Erickson 6th and Amber Harms in 7th.

The boys team finished third overall.



Falls High School girls volleyball team was defeated in three straight sets by Cherry - 21-25, 11-25 and 21-25.



Football teams at Fort Frances High School and Falls High School have their home openers today.

The Muskies face St. Norbert, 3 p.m. at Muskie field.

The Broncos host Virginia at Bronco Stadium at 7 p.m.

Local Sports for Wednesday September 7

International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team defeated Cook's North Woods High School in straight sets, 26-24, 25-12 and 25-18, for its third win of the year.



Falls High School girls varsity and junior varsity swim teams were outscored in head-to-head competition against Grand Rapids.

Rachel Adams in the 50 yard freestyle, Morgan Bruess in the 100 yard backstroke, Ashley Hasbargen in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team earned wins for the varsity squad.

Taylor Hebner, in the 50 yard free, was the lone winner for the juniors.

Local Sports for Tuesday September 6

The International Falls Broncos football team was defeated 49-nothing by Foley Friday.

The Broncos have their home opener this Friday against Virginia.



Another former member of the International Falls Broncos hockey team has been placed in the list of the top 100 high school players in Minnesota.

Oscar Mahle is ranked 79th by Minnesota Hockey Hub whose naming a new player each day.

Mahle led the Broncos to their first ever State title in 1957.

Local Sports for Friday September 2

Falls High School varsity cross country run teams placed third in both the boys and girls divisions at a meet in Babbit yesterday.

The school also saw success with some of its younger runners.

Wyatt Ulrich finished first in the sophomore boys 4000 metre run and Lexi Erickson was tops in the grade 7 and 8 girls 1600 metre run.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team dropped its first match of the year.

The Broncos lost in three straight sets to Littlefork-Big Falls, 21-25, 16-25 and 15-25.



Rainy River Community College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches played in Thief River Falls Wednesday.

The Voyageurs first lost to Itasca in four sets - 19-25, 25-23, 14-25 and 22-25 - the dropped three straight to Northland.



There will be no activity at Emo Speedway this weekend.

Both the Borderland Racing Association and the Borderland Go-Kart Club won't be racing.

Most of the racers and their families are expected at the labour day shootout in Hibbing.

Falls High School Broncos girls volleyball team defeated Two Harbours in four games, winning 25-21, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-21

Reva Renollet paced the team with 6 kills, 4 ace serves and 17 assists.

The Broncos are now 2-0 on the season.



A former member of the Fort Frances Royals junior hockey team from the '60's has been recognized as one of the top 100 all-time high school hockey players in Minnesota.

Defenceman Gary Wood is 85th in a list being compiled by Minnesota Hockey Hub.

Wood, who was born in Fort Frances, was an all-state player as International Falls reached three straight state tournaments before he joining the Royals.

He was drafted by Oakland in the 1967 NHL draft, but never played a single game.
