Local Sports For Friday March 28

Fort Frances Lakers will open their SIJHL semi-final series against the expansion English River Miners tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The Lakers lost just once to the Miners during the regular season.

That coming back in early December, but the Lakers have beat them in seven straight since.

Game time tonight is 7:30 PM

Six teams remain in the hunt for the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball Championship.

Scared Hitless, who beat Kiss My Pass, and Gillons Cougars who got by Alliance advanced to the A-side semi-final.

Kiss My Pass and Alliance bump to the B-side to play Bump It Up and By the Ball, respectively.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team is in indoor action in Rosemount, playing Fergus Falls and Rochester today as part of a cross-over tournament.

The Voyageurs opened play last weekend at the Irish Dome going 6 and 3.

Local Sports For Thursday March 27

Jaymee Fiset scored three times as the Main Street Mayhem blanked Cater 2 U Queens 5-0.

Abby Sanders and Claire Hyatt added the other markers.

The other game in the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League saw the Boston Pizza Ball Blasters forfeit to the Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes.



Northwestern Ontario football fans won't have to travel very far for next year's Grey Cup.

The CFL has awarded the 103rd title game to Winnipeg.

It will be played November 29, 2015 at Investors Group Field, which opened last year.

Ticket details are still in the works, but season ticket holders will get first priority.

Winnipeg last hosted the Grey Cup in 2006.

Local Sports For Wednesday March 26

International Falls Broncos girls track team placed third at an indoor meet yesterday in Bemidji.

Savannah Olson picked up a win in the shot put.

Emma Gilbert place second in the same event.

Lexi Erickson was second in the 3200 metre run while Breanna Shoffner finished second in the 60 metre event.



A member of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's softball team has earned the season's first pitcher of the week honours in the MCAC Northern Division.

Oashaja Dobie struck out 64 in 50 innings of work over the weekend to go 5-3 to start the season.

The Voyageurs, who went 6 and 3,  have also been ranked 10th to start the season by the NJCAA.



All-star honours for International Falls native Ben Gordon.

He's been named to the All-Central Hockey League team.

The member of the Tulsa Oilers is currently 4th in league scoring with 88 points and second in goals with 35.




Dates for the SIJHL semi-final series between the Fort Frances Lakers and the English River Miners have been announced.

The best-of-seven series will begin Friday at the Ice for Kids arena with game two going Saturday night before it shifts to Ear Falls for games 3 and 4 next Thursday and Friday.

The other semi-final series involving the Thunder Bay North Stars and the Minnesota Iron Rangers is also starting Friday in Thunder Bay.

Local Sports For Tuesday March 25

It will be the Fort Frances Lakers taking on the expansion English River Miners in the SIJHL semi-finals.

The Miners upset Dryden Monday night 3-2 to win that quarterfinal series 4 games to 2.

Dates for the series are expected to be released in the next day or two.

Local Sports For Monday March 24

Fort Frances Lakers have selected their semi-final round opponent.

They've decided to play the winner of the quarter-finals series between English River and Dryden.

The Miners currently lead that series 3-2 with game 6 being played tonight in Dryden.

The Lakers earned the right to choose its next round opponent after inning a two-game total-goal series over Thunder Bay, capped by a 3-0 win Friday.



Don Debenedet's rink came out on top of the men's International bonspiel held at the Fort Frances Curling Club on the weekend.

He beat out the Raymond Roy rink in the A-side final.

Greg Gustafson beat John Gibson's foursome in the B-side.

Chris Silver took the C-side title over Ron Silver.

Peter Jenson beat Dave Johnson in the D-side event.

A total of 24 teams participated.

Local Sports For Friday March 21

Fort Frances Muskies sports teams are heading back home without medals.

The Muskies boys team ended its run at the all-Ontario championship in Burlington with a 6-1 loss to Haliburton in the quarter-finals.

The girls hockey team was eliminated from the playoff round of its championship in Sudbury on Wednesday.

The girls curling team skipped by Hailey Beaudry finished off play at the all-Ontario's in Brampton with a 7-3 loss to Richview of Etobicoke yesterday afternoon to finish with an 0 and 4 record.



Fort Frances Lakers bench boss Wayne Strachan has been named coach of the year in the SIJHL.

It's the fourth time Strachan has won the award.

Strachan guided the Lakers to the their first ever SIJHL regular season championship, and a fifth-place showing in the Canadian Junior Hockey League weekly rankings.



Fort Frances Lakers playoff game with the Thunder Bay North Stars is still a go.

It's the second game of the two-game total goal series to decide who gets choice of opponent in the semi-finals.

The North Stars hold a one goal edge after beating out the Lakers last Saturday 4-3.

Game time at the Ice For Kids arena is 7:30 PM.




Four teams have advanced through the A side of the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League playoffs.

Scared Hitless, Kiss My Pass, Gillons Cougars and Alliance went unscathed in the first week of the double-knock style rounds.

The rest of the teams have been knocked to the B-side with playoffs resuming next Thursday.

Local Sports For Thursday March 20

Four third period goals in a span of four minutes helped the Fort Frances Muskies rally from a 4-1 deficit to beat Robert F. Hall 5-4 and advance to this morning's quarter-finals at the all-Ontario boys hockey championships in Burlington.

Tyler Van Uden scored twice with Cole Tymkim, Jarrod Taylor and Carter Brown with the eventual winner getting the others.

The Muskies finish the round robin with a 3 and 1 record and now face Haliburton at 7:45 AM this morning.



The run for the Muskies girls hockey team at the all-Ontario in Sudbury is over.

They lost 6-1 to St. Theresa in their quarter-final match last night.

Clare Sandelovich had the Muskies only goal.



Fort Frances Muskies girls curling team, skipped by Hailey Beaudry, is down 0 and 2 at the all-Ontario's in Brampton.

Her rink lost 10-9 to Mount Cararmel in their opener, rallying from a 7-1 deficit to tie the score only to loss in the final end.

They then fell to Toronto's Loretto Abbey in the afternoon contest.

This morning, they face London area's Medway High School and Richview of Etobicoke this afternoon.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team has been eliminated from the all-Ontario hockey championships in Burlington.

The Muskies were downed 6-1 by Haliburton in the quarter-finals.

Graeme Kitt notched the Muskies only goal late in the third.



Hailey Beaudry and her Fort Frances High School curling team dropped their third straight game at the all-Ontario girls curling championship in Brampton, losing 8-6 to London's Medway High School this morning, officially eliminating them from playoff contention.

They play their final round game this afternoon against Richview of Etobicoke.



Jayme Fiset continues to have a hot boot for the Main Street Mayhem, scoring four times in a 9-1 victory over the Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes in the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League.

Abby Sanders and Shannon Darby each scored twice with Claire Hyatt notching the other.

There was no score provided in the game between the Cater 2 U Queens and Boston Pizza.



Fort Frances Lakers' Lucas Debenedet has been named the SIJHL's rookie of the year.

The 18-year-old from International Falls led all scorers with 48 goals and 112 points in his first season.

He's the fifth Laker in the league 13-year history to win the award.

Meantime, Minnesota Austin Frank has been named top defenceman, beating out Lakers Cody Wickstrom for the award.

Thunder Bay's Eric Mann has been named top goaltender over Fort Frances's Jordan Cartney.



The Emo all stars of Donald young school conquered a tournament against all other Rainy River District Schools in an extreme game of backgammon.

They went undefeated!

Local Sports For Wednesday March 19

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team is one and one after the first day of play at the all-Ontario high school hockey championship in Burlington.

The Muskies open with a 12-1 win over Timmins on hat tricks from Josh Gouin and Graeme Kitt.

They were shut out 4-0 by Toronto's Community Hebrew Academy in the afternoon.

They have an early game this morning again LaSalle out of Kingston beginning at 7:15 AM .




The Muskies girls are also one and one at their championship being played in Sudbury.

They opened with a 1-0 win over Embrun on Shelby Tymkin's first period marker but lost 4-2 to St. Michael's Catholic School of Stratford in the afternoon.

Tymkin and  Katie Sinclair with goals in that game.

The Muskies are back on the ice at 11:45 AM E.S.C. Theriault.



Donald Young School captured a ping pong tournament, beating Sturgeon Creek in the final four games to 2.



Tyler Van Uden broke a 1-1 tie early in the third as the Fort Frances Muskies skating to a 2-1 win over La Salle of Kingston this morning at the all-Ontario boys hockey championship in Burlington.

Graeme Kitt had the team's other goal.

The Muskies need a win tonight against Robert F. Hall to assure them a spot in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

That game begins at 5 PM.



A late game rally fell short for the Fort Frances Muskies girls curling team in its first game at the all-Ontarios in Brampton.

Hailey Beaudry's rink  lost 10-9 to Mississauga's Our Lady of Mount Carmel after being down 7-1 after four ends.

Beaudry's rink scored 6 in the 7th to tie the game only to lose on a last rock draw in the final end.

The foursome now face Toronto's Loretto Abbey at 12:30 PM.

Local Sports For Tuesday March 18

The search for OFSSA gold begins today with the Fort Frances Muskies opening play at the all-Ontario high school boys hockey championship in Burlington.

The Muskies are seeded fifth and will open the tournament with a game against Timmins this morning at 9 AM Central time.

Then at 2 PM Central time, they are back on the ice against Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto.



It's a first appearance for the Muskies girls team at the all-Ontario championship taking place in Sudbury.

The 8th seeded Muskies play their first game against Embrum at 9:30 AM Central time.

They're back on the ice at 1:30 PM Central against 3rd ranked St. Michael Catholic School.

Stay tuned to 93.1 The Border during the day for game updates.



Fort Frances Muskies are into the win column following their first game at the all-Ontario high school boys hockey championship in Burlington, walloping an undermanned Timmins team 12-1.

Josh Gouin and Graeme Kitt each notched hat tricks while Noah Loveday and Maxwell Willians scored twice.

Other goals game from Brett Hahkala, Cole Tymkin, Jarred Taylor, Tyler Vanuden and Derek Kaemingh.

Timmins played with just 11 players with the rest of its squad back home competing in midget hockey playoffs.

The Muskies are back on the ice at 2 pm central time against Toronto's Community Hebrew Academy.



Shelby Tymkin's first period goal stood as the winner at the Muskies girls hockey team held on for a 1-0 win over Embrun to open the all-Ontario high school hockey championship in Sudbury.

The Muskies did have a goal disallowed in the second on a late whistle.

They now prepare for a game against Stratford's St. Michael Catholic School beginning at 1:30 PM central time.

Local Sports For Monday March 17

No regional championships for the Northwestern Ontario all-stars.

Both the bantam and pee-wee teams were swept in two-games by the Thunder Bay Kings over the weekend.

Noah Loveday of the Fort Frances Canadians did shine in the Bantam's first game Friday, scoring both goals in a 3-2 loss.

His teammate Brent Hakkala assisted in both of those goals.



It was a medal-showing performance for members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts at the Man-Sask Provincial Championships in Winnipeg on  the weekend.

15-year-old Adam Stromberg claimed five medals including gold in the 50 metre Free and 100 metre butterfly to go with silver in both the 100 metre free and 50 metre breaststroke and a bronze in the 50m butterfly.

13-year-old Josh Cousineau took Silver in the 50 metre free and 200 metre backstroke and Bronze in the 100 m Backstroke.

Donovan Taylor grabbed a bronze in the 50m Butterfly.



The first season-ending awards for the SIJHL have been announced.

Thunder Bay's Matthias Gardiman was named most sportsmanlike.

Minnesota's Jonathan Losurdo beat out the Lakers' Lyndon Lipinski as the best defensive forward.



The Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League's regular season has ended with a pair of teams finishing first overall.

The final standings show Scared Hitless and Alliance tied with 77 points.

Gillons Cougars was third.

Playoffs will begin Thursday.



The Borderland Racing Association has released a preliminary schedule for its upcoming race season.

Emo Speedway is scheduled to open May 17.

There will be a work bee at the track on May 3 with an open practice planned for the following week.

Local Sports For Friday March 14

Fort Frances Lakers dominate the first-ever season ending all-star selections in the SIJHL.

Lucas Debenedt, Mason Meyer and Cody Wickstrom were named to the first team.

Lydon Lipinski and Jordan Cartney were second team selections.

Wayne Strachan was also a first team selection for both coach and general manager.

Dale Cooper and Dwayne Sinclair were named the league's top trainers and equipment managers.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team's season has ended.

The Broncos lost 62-53 to Barnum in the semi-finals of the Section 7AA championship.

Maddy Filipiak led the team with 21 points.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team split games with St. Lawrence of Quebec at its spring training games in Florida.

The Voyageurs won the opener 10-6 with Colten Boudreau going 4 for 4 at the plate and Talon Kunkel getting the win on the mound.

They dropped the second 12-5.

The Fort Frances Aquanauts swim team has three swimmers in Winnipeg for the Man-Sask  Provincial Championships that start today.

Donovan Taylor is taking his University March break to join Adam Stromberg and Josh Cousineau in the competitions that bring together the top swimmers from across the Prairies and northwestern Ontario.

Local Sports For Tuesday March 11

Fort Frances Laker netminder Devin Tappenden has been named the second star for the month of February by the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

The 19-year old from Markham post an 8 and 0 record, including 5 wins on the road.

Tappenden was also the SIJHL’s performer of the month.



The playoff schedule has been set by the SIJHL.

Fort Frances Lakers and the Thunder Bay North Stars will begin their first-round two-game total goal series this Saturday in Thunder Bay.

Game 2 will be played March 21 in Fort Frances.

The winner earns choice of opponent in the semi-finals.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team split its second series of games in its pre-season play in Florida.

The Voyageurs lost 10-3 to Schenectady Community College, but rebounded for a 2-0 in their second contest.

Local Sports For Monday March 10

Fort Frances Canadians midget AA team lost 6-2 in the consolation final to the Thomas Aquinas Saints in the first ever Hockey Northwestern Ontario AA championship hosted by Fort Frances on the weekend.

Thunder Bay's Volunteer Pool Bearcasts won the Joe Ward Memorial Trophy with a 6-2 win of their own over the Fort William Canadians in the final.



The SIJHL regular has come to an end with the Fort Frances Lakers finishing first overall, their first regular season championship.

Lucas Debendent topped the league with 112 points and 43 goals.

Netminder Jordan Cartney tied for the league lead in shutout with 3.

The Lakers will now prepare for a first round series with Thunder Bay.



The SIJHL has named its award finalists with several Lakers included.

Lucas Debenedet is up for player of the year and rookie of the year honours.

Cody Wickstrom is nominated for best defenceman.

Jordan Cartney has been selected for goalie of the year.

Lyndon Lipinski, is up for defensive player of the year.

Mason Meyer is a nominee for most improved.

Wayne Strachan is a finalist for coach of the year.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Section 7AA championship for a 4th straight year after beating Virginia 60-43 on Saturday.

Cassie Tomzcak led with 16 points.

Bronco will face Barnum this Thursday in Duluth.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team has been seeded fifth in the upcoming all-Ontario high school AA championship in Burlington.

That puts them in a pool with Caledon's Robert F. Hall Catholic School, La Salle Secondary School out of Kingston,  Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto and Timmins.

Meantime, the Muskies girls hockey team has the eighth seed in its provincial championship in Sudbury, placing them in a pool with Stratford's St. Michael Catholic School, Embrum and Theriault out of Timmins.



Spring training for the Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team is underway with the team losing a pair of games on the weekend to Minnesota State-Fergus Falls 7-5 and 8-3.

They're playing Schenectady Community College today.

Local Sports For Friday March 7

The first ever regional championship for AA midget teams in the northwestern Ontario gets underway this afternoon in Fort Frances.

Six teams, including the Fort Frances Canadians, are taking part.

Play kicks off at 3:15 p.m. today with St. Thomas Aquinas facing Thunder Bay's Volunteer Pool Bearcats.

The Canadians first game is tonight at 7:15 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre against the West End Bruins.

Local Sports For Thursday March 6

International Falls girls basketball team has advanced in the Section 7AA championship with a convincing 78-51 win over Greenway.

Teagan Anderson led the team with 23 points.

They now face Virginia this Saturday in Duluth.

Local Sports For Wednesday March 5

Fort Frances Lakers will finish the season as the fifth ranked junior A club in Canada.

The Canadians Junior Hockey League has announced its final set of 20 top.

The Lakers, who will finish first in the SIJHL, entered the weekly rankings back in October, reaching as high as number 5.



Registration for youth soccer in Fort Frances continues tonight and tomorrow at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Sign-up both days is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Meantime, coaches in several divisions are still being sought.

Local Sports For Tuesday March 4

The plane out of Fort Frances to OFSSA is going to overloaded.

The high school's girls curling team, skipped by Hailey Beaudry, earned a berth to the all-Ontario curling championships after finishing first at the NWOSSA event in Chapleau.

Beaudry's rink went undefeated and will travel to Brampton later this month.

The boys team, skipped by Reece Jones, finished third overall, with a 3 and 2 record.



Bryce Lipinski scored twice as the Fort Frances Lakers defeated Wisconsin 7-2 in an SIJHL game played in Hoyt Lakers.

Brent Aiken, Mason Meyer, Lucas Debenedet, Kevin Kurm and Bryson Jasper had the other goals.

Lakers wrap up their regular season against the Wilderness Friday at home.



Fort Frances Lakers defenceman Cody Wickstrom has been named player of the week in the SIJHL.

The 20-year-old from Marquette, Michigan had six assists in the Lakers three wins last week.

Local Sports For Monday March 3

It's off to the all-Ontario high school hockey championships for the Fort Frances Muskies.

The boys team earned its ticket after thumping Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos 7-3 to win the NorWossa Championship in two straight.

Graeme Kitt and Tyler Van Uden each scored twice.

Malcolm King, David Pryde and Sam Tibbs added singles.

OFSSA's begin March 18 in Burlington and Oakville.

The Muskies also advanced to the all-Ontario girls' championship after beating Dryden 4-3 to win the NorWossa title in two games.

Katie Sinclair , Hailey Clendenning , Lauren Vold and Amber Jourdain scored for the Muskies.

The girls tournament takes place in Sudbury beginning March 18.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team was eliminated from the Section 7AA championship by Proctor 84-65 Saturday.

Ben Humbert had 20 points in a losing cause.



The Broncos girls basketball team ended its regular season Friday with a 70-36 win over Deer River.

Broncos now face Greenway Wednesday in the first round of the Section 7AA playoffs.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team lost to Northland 68-35 in the semi-final of the Region 13B tournament Saturday to end its season.

Kurstyn Gordon lead the Voyageurs with 17 points.




Fort Frances High School curling teams are in the hunt for a trip to the all-Ontario championship.

The girls team, skipped by Hailey Beaudry, is 2 and oh at the NWOSSA event in Chapleau after defeateing Manitouwadge this morning 12-0.

Yesterday, Beaudry's rink defeated Sioux Lookout 6-5 in an extra end.

On the boy's side, Reece Jone's rink lost 7-5 to Red Lake, but won its second 12-0 yesterday, then defeated St. Ignatius of Thunder Bay 7-0 this morning.

Play resumes this afternoon.



Fort Frances Lakers play their final series of games this week, both against the Wisconsin Wilderness.

The first goes tonight in Hoyts Lake where the Lakers have lost only once this season.

Local Sports For Friday February 28

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team is a win away from securing a post in the all-Ontario high school hockey championship.

The Muskies defeated Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos 7-1 to take game one of the best of three NorWossa final.

Tyler Van Uden led the onslaught with a pair of goals.

Braden Webb, Noah Loveday, Josh Gouin, David Pryde and Chris Ferguson added singles.

Game two goes Sunday in Kenora.



Fort Frances Lakers return to home ice for the second game this week with the English River Miners.

The Lakers beat the Miners Wednesday in Ear Falls 3-1.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team concludes its regular season with a game against Deer River.

Game time at Falls High is 7:15 p.m.



The Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team is in playoff action tomorrow in Thief River Falls.

They face the MCAC's northern division's leading Northland Pioneers to open the Region 13B championship tournament.



Top of the standings in the Fort Frances women's volleyball league has tightened up.

Alliance moved into a first place tie with Scared Hitless following action last night.

Both teams have 71 points with one week left in the season.

Gillon's Cougars hold down second spot with 70 points.

Notorious D.I.G.and Kiss My Pass round out the top five.

A pair of second period goals, 15-seconds apart, led to the Fort Frances Lakers beating the English
River Miners 3-1, in an SIJHL game played in Ear Falls.

Meyer Meyer broke a 1-1 tie before Adam Wesley-Chisel add an insurance marker.

Kevin Kurm had the Lakers other goal.

The two teams meeting again Friday in Fort Frances.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Section 7AA championship, beating Mesabi East 71-41.

Cole Miggins topped all Broncos with 18 points.

Broncos now play Proctor on Saturday.



Weather forced the cancellation of games in the Borderland Women's indoor soccer league.

They will resume play next week.

All-star recognition for a member of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team.

Roneisha Jordan has been selected to the MCAC's northern division's first all-star team.

The freshman out of Florida led the division in rebounds and was fourth overall in scoring.

Local Sports For Wednesday Feburary 26

Fort Frances Lakers have clinched their first ever SIJHL regular season title.

Lucas Debenedet's power play goal with 8-minutes remaining proved to be the game winner as the Lakers edged the Wisconsin Wilderness 3-2.

Aaron Wesley-Chisel and Mason Meyer had the other Laker goals.

It's the first regular season title for a Fort Frances based team since the Borderland Thunder finished first overall in 2003.

Meantime, the Lakers are back on the ice for the start of a home-and-home series with the English River Miners.

The Lakers are in Ear Falls tonight before returning to the Fort for the rematch Friday night.

The Eagles advanced with a 4-2 win Red Lake.

No medals for Atikokan High School skiers at the first day all-Ontario Cross-Country Ski Championships in Timmins.

Reisha Vos was 93rd in the junior girls 4 k event.

Grant Legaree was 78th in the junior boys 5-K.

Kiara Gannon was 56th in the senior girls 5-K.

Bailey Morden and Joe Anthony were well back of the field in the senior boys race.



The schedule for the NorWossa girls high school hockey final has been released.

The Best-of-3 series will start Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. in Fort Frances with the hometown Muskies taking on the Dryden Eagles.

Game two will be played in Dryden on Sunday.

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team has advanced to the NorWossa finals.

Last night, they walloped Dryden 10-3 to take that semi-final series in two straight games and will face Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos in the finals starting this Thursday in Fort Frances.

Braeden Webb had a hat trick in the game while Kyle Van Uden and Cole Tymkin each had a pair.



The Muskies girls hockey team is also to the finals after an 8-2 thrashing of Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.

Shilo Beck led with a trio of goals.

Amber Jourdain added two others with singles from Shelby Tymkin, Amy Penner and Kaily Greengrass.

The Muskies will await the winner between Dryden and Red Lake with the Eagles in a position to take that series with a win tonight.



Two Fort Frances curling teams have earned silver medals at the NorWossa curling championships in Sioux Lookout.

Reece Jones' rink lost to Red Lake in the gold medal match 7-5, but still advances to the NWOSSA event in Chapleau next week.

Hailey Beaudry's girls team also advances despite losing to Sioux Lookout in the NorWossa final 5-1.

The Muskies mixed team finished 3rd after beating Whitefish Bay 8-5.



Fort Frances Lakers are in a position to captured their first ever regular season championship in the SIJHL.

They host the Wisconsin Wilderness tonight at the Ice for Kids arena.

A Lakers win put them into the 1 vs 2 showdown with the winner earning the right to select their semi-final opponent.

Thunder Bay North Stars can clinch second spot with a win of their own over Wisconsin Friday.

Meantime, the Lakers have been tabbed in the number 5 position in the weekly Canadian Junior Hockey League rankings.

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated Dryden 12-4 to take the first game of the NorWossa semi-final.

David Pryde, Cole Tymkin and Jarred Taylor each scored twice.

Game 2 goes tonight at the Ice for Kids arena beginning at 7:15 p.m.



The Muskies girls hockey team has taken game one of its NorWossa semi-final with Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos, winning 4-3 in Kenora.

The series shifts back to Fort Frances this afternoon for game two starting at 2:15 p.m.



At least one Fort Frances high school curling team is assured a trip to the NWOSSA championships.

The girls team, skipped by Hailey Beaudry, defeated Kenora and Atikokan to open the first day of the NorWossa event in Sioux Lookout.

Her rink plays Sioux Lookout today with both rinks having locked up berths to Chapleau next week.

The boys team, skipped by Reece Jones, beat Kenora, Rainy River and Atikokan yesterday and plays Kenora's Thomas Aquinas this morning.

The mixed team lost to Rainy River and Atikokan.



International Falls Bronco boys basketball team will be ranked number 2 in the Section 7AA championship with playoffs to begin Wednesday.

Friday, they defeated Duluth Marshall 69-61.

The Bronco girls basketball team lost to Mountain Iron Buhl Friday 81-38.

The Bronco boys hockey team lost 9-0 to Hermantown Friday in its final regular season game.



Falls High School's boys swim team finished 8th out of 9 teams at the Section 6A swimming championships in Hibbing.

Cole Tatsak, with a 5th place showing in diving, had the team's best finish.

Levi Lucy was 6th in the 200 meter individual medley.



Fort Frances Muskies boys curling team has stamped its trip to the NWOSSA championships.

The team, skipped by Reece Jones, beat Thomas Aquinas 7-5 this morning to guarantee a spot in next weeks event.

The team plays Red Lake for the NorWossa crown this afternoon.



Fort Frances Canadians AA atom team finished 5th overall at a tournament in Fargo, on the weekend, that attracted 120 teams from across north America.

The Canadians beat Roseau 8-0  Minnetonka 3-2 and Oklahoma City before losing to Osseo-Maple Grove in the playoff round, moving them to the fifth place game where the beat Colorado's Krivo School of Elite 5-2.

Local Sports For Friday February 21

An appeal has been launched by Fort Frances Youth Soccer for coaches for this season.

The organization now has five coaches confirmed for its squirt division, but only one or two for its other divisions and none for one of its older age divisions.

Officials says the number of teams will be based on the number of coaches.

Those interested in helping out can contact officials through their Facebook.



A couple of high school playoff games  have been rescheduled.

The Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team will now begin a NorWossa series with Dryden Sunday in Dryden.

Game 2 will be played Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena with game 3, if necessary planned for Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The International Falls Broncos boys hockey team's semi-final game against Hermantown scheduled for last night has been moved to tonight.

Lucas Debenedet's league leading 44th goal of the season early in the third proved to be the winner at the Fort Frances Lakers skated to a 4-2 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs in a game played at the Couchiching First Nation's Arena.

It was also Debenedet's 103rd point of the season.

Cameron Jackson, Bryce Lipinski and Mason Meyer with an empty net marker added the Lakers other goals.



In women's indoor soccer, Main Street Mayhem beat the Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes 5-3.

Jayme Fiset and Claire Hyatt each with a pair of goals for the Mayhem.

Nichole Renberg had a pair for the Rockettes.

The Cater 2 U Queens blanked the Boston Pizza Ball Blasters 4-0.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams earned a split with Hibbing in games played at the College last night.

The women defeated the Cardinals 61-49, but the men fell 98-65.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team will have to wait to open its NorWossa playoff series with Dryden.

Tonight's game has been cancelled because of the pending storm.

No make-up date has yet been announced.

The series will now start Saturday in Dryden.



International Falls Broncos, meantime, are facing Hermantown in a quarter-final game in the Section 7A championship.

A win moves the Broncos to the semi-finals to be played Saturday in Grand Rapids.

They edged Red Lake 3-2 in the final game to finish with a 15 and 0 win-loss record.

International Falls Broncos boys hockey team has advanced to the next round of the Section 7A championship with a 5-2 win over Greenway.

A member of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team has been honoured as the MCAC player of the week in the northern division.

Florida's Roneisha Jordan average 27.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in two games on the weekend.

International Falls Broncos girls basketball team improved to 18 and 4 with a 71-57 win Friday over Duluth's Marshall School.

They face North Woods tonight.

The Bronco boys basketball team dropped a pair of games, losing 59- 50 Aitkin on Friday and 60-57 in overtime Saturday to Hinckley-Finlayson.

The boys hockey team plays Greenway tonight in the first game of the Section 7A championship.



A golden weekend for the Northwestern Ontario All-Stars at the Tournament of Champions in Brandon, Manitoba.

The Stars won the Bantam Double 'A' tournament without losing a single game, beating Peace River, Alberta in the final.

The team includes players from the Fort Frances area.

The All-Stars will challenge the Thunder Bay Kings on March 14th.



Some good showings for a pair of figure skaters from the Borderland.

Alina Eldridge placed 7th in the junior bronze free at the Festival of Stars in Sault Ste. Marie on the weekend.

Local Sports For Friday February 14

Just a single championship title for the Fort Frances Muskies at yesterday's NorWossa finals in Fort Frances.

The junior boys basketball team capped its season with a 63-34 win over Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.

The seniors boys team beat Kenora 44-43 in the semi-finals, but fell 92-50 to Dryden in the final.

The senior girls volleyball team swept Kenora 3-0 in the semis, but lost 3-0 to Dryden in the final.

The junior girls, who had earned a bye to their finals, were beating in four sets by Dryden.



Scared Hitless remains in first in the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball league despite having a night off.

The team has 67 points to the Alliance 66.

Both teams were off due to the NorWossa championships taking over Fort High.

Fourth-place Notorious D.I.G. did pick up four points in games at St. Michael's School to move within six points of the leaders.



Fort Frances Lakers entertain the Minnesota Iron Rangers in the start of a home-and-home series.

Tonight's game is at the Ice For Kids Arena before the teams travel to Hoyt Lakes for game 2.

Debenet had a goal and 3 assists while Meyer and Lipinski each added a single and two helpers.



Jaymee Fiset added to her league leading goal total, netting three in Main Street Mayhem's 5-1 win over the Boston Pizza Ball Blasters in the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League.

In the other game, Sydney Radigan scored twice as the Cater 2 U Queens doubled up Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes 4-2.

Rainy River Owls have claimed the NorWossa A championship in junior girls volleyball.

The season for the International Falls Broncos girls hockey team has come to an end.

Grant Legaree took first in the junior boys race while Kiara Gannon claimed top honours in the senior girls event.

Kelvyn Vos was third in the Grade 7 and 8 boys event.

Reisha Vos was second while Emma Campanaro was third in the junior girls race.

Joe Anthony took home third in the senior boys event, three second ahead of fellow Atikokan skier Bailey Morgan.

Fort Frances Lakers netminder Devin Tappenden has been named the SIJHL player of the week.

In three starts last week, the 19-year-old native of Markham, Ontario, posted a 2-0-and-1 record, giving up an average 1.96 goals per game and stopping over 94 per cent of shots faced.



The Fort Frances Lakers remain sixth overall in the Canadian Junior Hockey League weekly rankings.

They are aback in action tomorrow against Minnesota in Hoyt Lakes.

Mixed results for two Fort Frances curling rinks at the Northern Ontario bantam curling championships.

Chris Silver's rink opened with a 6-3 win over Thessalon, but fell 12-3 to Felix LaSalle of Timmins in the evening draw.

On the girls side, Hailey Beaudry's rink is also one and one with an opening 9-2 win over Cassidy Romyn of Sioux Lookout and a 6-5 loss to Calli Barclay of North Bay.

Silver's rink next faces Sam Cull of Sudbury.

Beaudry's foursome plays Katie Rutledge of Sault Ste. Marie.



The top of the standings in the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League has gotten a little tighter.

Alliance earned 5 points last night to remain in first.

A pair of wins by Sacred Hitless moved them into a second place tie with Gillon's Cougars with both teams 2 points back of first.

Notorious D I G also scored a pair of victories to take over fourth spot in the standing.



Fort Frances Lakers are back on home ice for a pair of game this weekend.

The host the Thunder Bay North Stars tonight before taking on the English River Miners tomorrow.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team continues play on the road with a pair of games in Red Lake tonight and tomorrow.



Fort Frances Canadian midget AA in tournament play again this weekend.

They're taking part in an event in Duluth.



Twelve members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts are in Thunder Bay this weekend to attend a regional swim meet.

They'll be up against the top swimmers from across the northwestern Ontario.

A pair of four-goal individual efforts highlighted the opening of the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League.

Jaymee Fiset scored four times in helping the Main Street Mayhem to a 6-1 win over Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes.

Sydney Radigan notched four as the Cater 2 U Queens dumped the Boston Pizza Ball Blasters 5-1.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams were swept by Mesabi Range in Virginia.

The men lost 104-72.

The women lost 74-44.



The gruelling Arrowhead Ultra 135 is now over with winners now declared in the run and ski events.

Scott Hoburg of Minnesota was the first runner to cross the finish at Tower.

Alicia Hudelson of Georgia was the top female finisher, setting a new record time by 7 hours.

Ben Shillington of Ottawa was the lone skier to finish the 135 mile trek between International Falls and Tower.



Kieth Aili of Ray, Minnesota finished second overall at the John Beargrease Dog Sled race between Grand Marie and Duluth.

He finished about 2 hours behind Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm, who won for a second straight year.

Luke Judson will wear a new jersey in the East Coast Hockey League.

The Emo native has signed with Idaho after his former club, the San Francisco Bulls, ceased operations on Monday.

He'd scored four goals in 31 games since joining the pro team in the fall.

He'll likely suit up for his first game with his new club next Wednesday.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team is on the road to Sioux Lookout for a NorWossa league game.

It's the first time these two teams have met this season.



International Falls Broncos girls plays Eveleth-Gilbert tonight - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco arena.

The boys hockey team is facing Hibbing in Hibbing.

The Broncos girls basketball team is at Mesabi East.



Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball teams and girls volleyball teams are back in action following a two-week layoff.

They are in Kenora facing the Beaver Brae Broncos.

Local Sports For Wednesday January 29

Fort Frances Lakers dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Minnesota Iron Rangers, last night in Hoyt Lakes.

Lyndon Lipinski had the Lakers only goal.

The loss, combined by Thunder Bay 6-0 win over English River, leaves the Lakers 7 points up on the Stars for first.



A three-goal performance from Carter Brown paced the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team to a 9-1 shellacking of the Dryden Eagles in a NorWossa league game.

Chase Ferguson had a pair in the game with singles from Aaron McDowell, Noah Loveday and Cole Tymkin.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team skated away with a 2-0 win over the Fort Frances Muskies.

Amber Tilander and Amy Auran with the goals for the Broncos.



On the court, the Bronco girls basketball team improved to 13 and 4 on the season with a 65-33 win over Deer River.



Keith Aili of Ray, Minnesota, is currently leading the John Beargrease Sled Dog race between Grand Marie and Duluth.

He has about a two hour lead on his nearest competitor in the race that will end later today.



The Borderland Indoor Women's Soccer League kicks off its season tonight.

The Main Street Mayhem is up first at 7 p.m. against  Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes.

That's followed by the Boston Pizza Ball Blasters facing Cater 2 U Queens.

All games are played at the Fort Frances High School.
