Local Sports For Friday February 8

Stratton's Trevor Bonot is in a tie for second spot after the second day of play at Northern Ontario men's curling championship in Nipigon.

Bonot, who curls out of Thunder Bay, lost to Al Hackner of Thunder Bay 7-3, then beat Robbie Gordon of Sudbury 8-6 in a night draw.




At the bantam curling championships, Chris Silver's Fort Frances rink split its first two games to open the boys championship in Longlac, losing 8-6 to Nick Servant of Sault Ste. Marie, then beating MacKenzie Joblin of Thunder Bay 8-7.

Hannah Bazinet's Atikokan rink dropped both its first two games at the girls event in Sioux Lookout.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team's season is over, with a 2-1 loss in double overtime to Princeton in the quarter-finals of the Section 7A championship.

On the hardwood, the Broncos girls basketball team beat Greenway 78-35.



Northwestern Ontario Regional pee-wee all-stars lost 7-1 in their opener of a tournament in Brandon to the host Brandon Wheat Kings.

Kenora's Jayme Caron had the Stars only goal.

They play Lumsden this afternoon.

Local Sports For Wednesday February 7

Tirzah Keefer's Northern Ontario rink defeated Nunavet 17-1 at the Canadian junior women's curling championship in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The Fort Frances native's Thunder Bay-foursome is playing the seeding round.



Stratton's Trevor Bonot has a share of the lead at the Northern Ontario men's championship in Nipigon.

Bonot, who now curls out of Thunder Bay, won his opening two games yesterday and is tied with the defending champion Brad Jacobs.



Area Bantam curling team are in Longlac and Sioux Lookout for the start of the Northern Ontario provincial championships.

Chris Silver takes his Fort Frances rink to the boys event in Longlac against six other teams.

The girls event in Sioux Lookout includes an Atikokan team skipped by Hannah Bazinet.



Rebecca Selma scored twice in helping Wright Physiotherapy to a 5-0 win over Leon's Fort Frances in the Borderland Women's Indoors Soccer League last night.

Laureen Peters had a hat trick and Tanya Hughes added two more as Boston Pizza blanked Cater 2U 5-0.

Peters' Plumbing & Heating won by default over Fit Lifestyles and Conditioning.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams earn a home sweep over Northland Community College.

The women won 71-67 while the men defeated the Pioneers 77-71.



A regional pee-wee team that will challenge for the Ontario championship in April hits the ice today in Brandon.

The Northwestern Ontario Regional all-stars are competing in the Tournament of Champions, playing its first game this afternoon against the host Brandon Wheat Kings.

The team includes 8 members of the Fort Frances Canadians AA peewee team.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team is in playoff action today in Princeton.

The Broncos are ranked fifth in the Section 7A bracket.

The Broncos girls basketball team continues its regular season with a game in Greenway.

Local Sports For Wednesday February 6

Fort Frances native Tirzah Keefer has failed to reach the championship round of the Canadian junior women's curling championship in Fort McMurray, Alberta

Keefer's Northern Ontario rink ended up in a tie-breaker after losing its final first round game to Quebec, 6-5 in an extra end.

Her Thunder Bay-based rink was officially eliminated when they lost 10-5 to the Territories in the tie-breaker.

She'll now resume play in the seeding round with other teams also knocked out of the championship round.



The Northern Ontario Curling Association's men's curling championship is getting underway later this afternoon in Nipigon.

Nine teams are vying for a spot to the Brier, including Stratton's Trevor Bonot, who's skipping a rink out of Thunder Bay.



Fort Frances Lakers have taken over second spot in the SIJHL with a 5-4 home win over the Dryden Ice Dogs.

Colton Spicer notched the game winner with five minutes remaining.

Jordan Christianson, Tyler Brodersen, Alex Bruess and Joel Bogacki also scored for the Lakers who moved two points up on the Ice Dogs.



Fort Frances Lakers goaltender Talor Joseph has been selected the SIJHL's player of the week.

In his only start last week, Joseph stopped 34 shots in a 4-2 win over Dryden.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team defeated Kenora's Thomas Aquinas Saints in a game played in Kenora.

Amy Penner led the scoring with a pair of goals.

Amber Jourdain, Katie Sinclair and Shylo Beck chipped in the others.



In the Falls, the Broncos boys hockey team defeated Lake of the Woods 4-2.

The boys basketball team lost to Crosby-Ironton 72-50.



The Fort Frances Leafs midget girls hockey team played to a 3-3 draw with the Lake of the Woods Bears in Baudette.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams are home to Northland Community College.

The women play at 6 p.m. with the men following immediately after.

Local Sports For Tuesday February 5

Tirzah Keefer is in a must win situation at the Canadian junior women's curling championship in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The Fort Frances native, who curls out of Thunder Bay, split games yesterday, beating Prince Edward Island, but losing the night game to Nova Scotia 11-1.

Her Northern Ontario rink sits with a record of 2 and 3 and needs a win this afternoon against Quebec for a chance to advance to the championship round.



Fort Frances Lakers and the Dryden Ice Dogs do battle tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Both teams are in a dog fight for second, each with 53 points.

The Lakers won the last meeting between the two clubs last Wednesday in Dryden.



The SIJHL is allowing all five of its remaining clubs to enter the playoff round.

Top three teams will earn first round byes while the fourth and fifth place finishers will play a best-of-three series to determine who advances to the semi-finals.

The playoffs will begin in the middle of March.





Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team travel to Kenora to face the Thomas Aquinas Saints.



In the Falls, the Broncos girls basketball team lost 65-61 to Cherry.

On the schedule tonight, the Broncos boys hockey team hosts Lake of the Woods - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The boys basketball team is at Crosby-Ironton.

Local Sports For Monday February 4

Fort Frances native Tirzah Keefer is into the win column as the Canadian junior curling championships in Fort McMurray.

Keefer's Northern Ontario rink romped past the Northwest Territories 13-2 after her Thunder Bay-based team dropped its first two games.

In play this morning, Keefer's Northern Ontario rink defeated Prince Edward Island 11-6.

Her rink plays Nova Scotia tonight.



14-year-old Adam Stromberg led the way for the Fort Frances Aquanauts swim team in the pool at the regional championships in Thunder Bay.

Stromberg won 7 gold medals and a silver.

12-year-old Josh Cousineau took home a goals, two silver and a bronze.

Mitchell Riordon, Ayiana Gagne, Regan Danylckuk and Kaela Lowey also returned home with medals.



A couple of championships for Fort Frances hockey teams at the Thunder Bay Elks Central Canada tournament.

Fort Frances Canadians outscoring their opposition 18-4 and blanked the Neebing Hawks 3-0 in the final of the AA pee-wee division.

Sullivan Shortreed had a pair of goals while Matti Booth recorded his second shut out of the tournament.

Austin Angus notched a hat trick as the Kennedy K-9's won the Bantam B title, beating the host Elks 82's 6-2 in the final.

Holmlund Leafs took the division's consolation championship beating the Thunder Bay Beavers 4-3.

The Emo Express lost 9-2 in the final of the Midget B title game.



Fort Frances Lakers dropped a 3-1 decision Saturday on home ice to the Minnesota Iron Rangers.

Jordan Christianson, who was named player of the month in the SIJHL, notching the Lakers only goal.



Fort Frances Muskies whitewashed Red Lake Friday night 15-0.

A game scheduled for Saturday against Kenora's Thomas Aquinas was cancelled.



Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team defeated Winnipeg's Transcona Titans 73-61 to win a tournament in Kenora.

Muskies beat Thomas Aquinas and Dryden to reach the final.



Fort Frances Muskies senior girls volleyball team won four of six games in the first of three tournaments to decide the new Northland Cup.

Muskies opened with a pair of losses to Rainy River, before coming back to sweep both Red Lake and Kenora's Beaver Brae.



Fort Frances Muskies junior girls volleyball team won five of six matches in its first play since early December.

The team swept by Red Lake and Sioux Lookout, while splitting games with Kenora's Thomas Aquinas at its first of three tournaments to decide a regional high school champion.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey beat Detroit Lakes Saturday 7-1.

The girls team blanked Park Rapids 4-0.

Today, the Broncos girls basketball team is host to Cherry - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High School.



Fort Frances Energy Fitness Wild won the bantam division of the Fort Frances Girls-Women's Hockey Association's tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre on the weekend.

Lauren Vold, Rylee Redford and Emma Noga scored as the Wild edged Dryden 3-2 in the final game.

Thunder Bay Maroons won the midget championship.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams dropped both games played Saturday against Central Lakes.

The men's lost 80-56 while the women fell 63-56.

Local Sports For Friday February 1

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated Sioux Lookout last night at the Ice for Kids Arena 6-2.

They host Red Lake tonight - 7:15 p.m. is the game time.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team was defeated 8-3 by Hibbing.

The girls hockey team was victorious over Eveleth-Gilbert 7-1

The boys basketball team defeated Warroad 63-56

The girls team dumped Mesabi East 70-62.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team has signed a pair of players for its team next season.

Courtney Hlady, who plays both forward and defence, and goalie Shay Perry both hail from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.



Several area hockey teams are competing at the Thunder Bay Elks Central Canada tournament.

Fort Frances Canadians AA pee-wee team takes on the host Elk 82's this morning.

The Kennedy K-9 play the Elks 82's this morning in the bantam B division.

Homlund Leafs face the Norwest Stars in the same division.

Atikokan Voyageurs and Emo Express have their first games in the midget B division this afternoon.



Girls hockey teams take over the Memorial Sports Centre this weekend.

The Fort Frances Girls-Women's Hockey Association is staging its bantam and midget tournament.

Energy Fitness Wild plays Emo at 11 a.m. this morning to kick off bantam play.

Pharmasave Wildcats face Dryden to open the midget side of things.

Teams from Warroad and Thunder Bay are also taking part.
