Local Sports For Thursday January 31

A three-goal second period paced the Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-2 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs last night in Dryden.

Brendan Cawston with the game winner, Tyler Brodersen, Alex Bruess and Jacob Nolan providing the Lakers goals.

Talor Joseph, who was recently acquired, stopped 35 shots for his second consecutive win.



Syndey Radigon netted a hat trick as Fit Lifestyles & Conditioning defeated Leon's Fort Frances 5-3 in a Borderland Women's Indoor League game.

Kim Cousineau scored twice in a losing cause for Leon's.

Elsewhere, Edith Jenkinson scored four times and Tanya Hughes added two others as Boston Pizza won for the fifth straight time, beating Wright Physiotherapy 7-2.

Jessica Caul scored twice to pace Peters' Plumbing & Heating to a 4-2 win over Cater 2 U.



In College basketball, Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team lost to Fond Du Lac 68-62.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team plays on home ice tonight for the first time in almost two months.

They host the Sioux Lookout Warriors - 7:15 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.



At Fall High School, the Broncos boys hockey team hosts Hibbing - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena

The girls team is in Eveleth-Gilbert.

The boys basketball team is in Warroad.

Local Sports For Wednesday January 30

Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams on the ice last night.

The boys team dropped a 5-3 decision to the Thomas Aquinas Saints in Kenora.

The girls team played International Falls losing 4-0.



Lucas Debenedet scored twice as the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team blanked North Shore 6-0.

The Broncos boys basketball team won its sixth straight game beating Virginia 65-62.

The girls team defeated Deer River 64-31.



Fort Frances Canadians Midget AA boys hockey team defeated the International Falls Broncos junior varsity squad 5-1 in a game played at Bronco Arena last night.

The Canadians are in tournament play this weekend in Duluth.



The first runner and skier in the Arrowhead 135 have crossed the finish line.

Parker Rios of Wisconsin finished the run from International Falls to Tower shortly after 4:30 a.m. this morning, completing the course in just less than 46 hours.

Mark Scott of Wisconsin was first to cross the finish on skies, doing so last night, almost 39 hours after leaving the Falls Monday.



On the local schedule tonight, the Fort Frances Lakers travel to Dryden for a game in the SIJHL.

Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams are in Cloquet to play Fond Du Lac.




The Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League resumes its schedule tonight after taking a week off.

Boston Pizza leads the standings with 33 points.

Jessica Caul of Peter's Plumbing and Heat holds down the scoring lead with 26 goals this season.

Local Sports For Tuesday January 29

Todd McFadden of Minnesota set a new record in finishing the bicycle competition of the Arrowhead 135 in 14 hours and 20 minutes.

He beat out Jeff Oatley of Alaska by just 30 seconds.

The event, which kicked off yesterday out of International Falls, ends in Tower.

The running and skiing portions of the competitions continue.



The Muskies High School hockey teams hit the ice tonight.

The girls team is hosting the International Falls Broncos girls  - 7 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The boys team travels to Kenora to face the Thomas Aquinas Saints.

It's the boys first game in almost two months.

The Broncos boys hockey team hosts North Shore - 6 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The boys basketball team is in Virginia.

The girls basketball team is home to Deer River - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High.



Jeremy Johnson of the Minnesota Wilderness has been named SIJHL player of the week.

Fort Frances Laker forward Jordan Christianson Pizza was selected an honourable mention.



The Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team is getting its squad for next year together.

Kerista Johnson, from Baudette, Tali Plate, of Deer River and Jordan Vezina, from Bigfork, have all committed to playing for the Voyageurs.

Local Sports For Monday January 28

Fort Frances Lakers dropped a 3-1 decision Saturday in Hoyt Lakes to the Minnesota Iron Rangers.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team scored a pair of shutout wins against South Dakota States, winning 3-nothing Saturday and 11-nothing yesterday.

Taylor Dixon had four goals in yesterday's contest.



Fort Frances Lions ended up with a second place finish at a pee-wee tournament in International Falls, losing to North Branch in the final.

Fort Frances Greens also lost to International Falls in the consolation final.



The Fort Frances Muskies junior boys basketball team split its first two games in play for the new Northland Cup, the title being challenge for in absence for a Norwossa championship.

Muskies lost to Kenora's Beaver Brae 29-21 then beat Red Lake 45-15

Atikokan Voyageurs lost 36-31 to Kenora and 21-12 to Red Lake.

The second of three tournament will go February 9th in Dryden.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams split games with Hibbing Saturday.

The women's beat the Cardinals 81-49 while the men lost to Hibbing 77-75.



A truckload of medals for members of the Border Skating Club at the Sunset Country Regional Competition in Dryden.

Brianne Eldridge led with three gold.

Double gold winners were Jillian Bobczynski, Alina  Eldridge, Jamie Spencer and Kaylyn Levesque.

The club also took gold in two separate team events.



Ottawa's Rachel Homan will represent Ontario at the Ontario Tournament of Hearts.

She won the right by beating Mississauga's Cathy Auld in the provincial curling title in Kitchener Waterloo.

The Tracy Horgan rink with Devlin's Jenna Enge finishing the tournament in 6th.



Two-time World Curling Champion Al Hackner is back looking for another provincial title.

Hackner won a qualifying event on the weekend to earn a spot to the Northern Ontario Curling Association's men's championship being played next week in Nipigon.

Hackner has won the provincial crown nine times, his last in 2001.

Local Sports For Friday January 25

High school sports make a return to Fort Frances High School today.

The girls hockey team kicks off a shortened schedule with a game in Red Lake.

The junior boys basketball team heads to Kenora tomorrow in the first of three mini-tournaments.

Teams are being coached by volunteers, but won't be challenging for NorWOSSA or provincial titles.



Notorious DIG beat Gillons' Insurance Cougars in 3 sets to take the win in a mini-tournament staged by the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League last night.

Its regular season resumes next week.



Fort Frances Lakers on the road this weekend for a pair games starting tonight in Thunder Bay against the North Stars.

Some eyebrows were raised last night when the Stars dressed just 13 skaters for their game against Dryden.

Duluth and Sioux Lookout were both dropped by the league because of player issues.




A busy day for high school teams at Falls High School.

International Falls Broncos boys hockey team is home to Grand Rapids, 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The girls basketball team will host Littlefork-Big Falls in a game cancelled from yesterday - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High.

The boys team heads to Aurora to face Mesabi East.



Tracy Horgan's Sudbury rink with Devlin's Jenna Enge and Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville still have a chance to reach the playoff round at the Ontario Scotties in Kitchener-Waterloo.

But there's both gonna need to win both their remaining games and hope for some losses from their competitors.

Both teams are tied for 5th at 3 and 4.

Local Sports For Thursday January 24

A pair of wins yesterday has moved Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville rink into a three-way tie for third at the Ontario Scotties in Kitchener Waterloo.

Tracy Horgan's Sudbury rink with Devlin's Jenna Enge split its games and is in a two-way tie for 6th

Marlo Dahl of Thunder Bay is at the bottom at oh and 5.

Cathy Auld of Mississauga and Rachel Homan of Ottawa lead the field with perfect 5 and oh records.

Local Sports For Wednesday January 23

The SIJHL is now a five team league.

The League has revoked the Duluth Clydesdales franchise due to a number of factors, including Duluth not being able to ice enough players on a consistent basis.

Earlier in the season, Sioux Lookout withdrew because of player issues.

The league is now looking at reworking the schedule.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 67-44.


The Broncos girls hockey team lost to Grand Rapids-Greenway 8-2.



Area curling rinks are at the bottom of the standings at the Ontario Scott Tournament of Hearts in Kitchener Waterloo.

Local Sports For Tuesday January 22

International Falls Broncos girls basketball team beat Lake of the Wood Bears 75-46.

Reva Renollet scored a team high 16 points.



The two Thunder Bay curling teams at the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts stumbled out of the gate in their opening games.

Krista McCarville dropped a 9-3 decision to defending champion Tracy Horgan in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Marlo Dahl's rink gave up a steal int he 10th end to lose 5-4 to Jacqueline Harrison.



Some results from hockey tournaments on the weekend.

Volunteer Pool Bearcats of Thunder Bay won the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Atom "A" tournament, beating the Thunder Bay Elks 3-2 in the final.

Fort Frances Family Motorsports won the B-side over the North End Atomic Flames of Thunder Bay 4-2.

The Emo Express won the C-side over the Thunder Bay North End Flames 4-3.



At a bantam girls tournament in Emo, Fort Frances Energy Fitness Wild beat the Peewee Nor-Fab Flames in the final 4-1.

Local Sports For Monday January 21

Connor Turk of Winnipeg was the winner of the Sunset Country Squash Club's Wesley Derkson Open.

He defeated Annis Seid  of Fort Frances in four games.

Other local flight winners included Anthony Andrusco, Alex Bruyere, Jeff Gustafson, Sarah Faragher and Marita Matias.



Matt Langen of Centerville captured the Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard 10 K run.

He finished just under 37 minutes.

Jill Kari of Superior was tops among women.

Lorne Ricard was the top local runner in seventh.

Zach Brintz of Lino Lakes and Allison Hanig of Duluth topped the 5 K.

Over a hundred in the 10 K and 200 in the 5 K competed.



Skaters from the Borderland Skating Club earned a number of medals at a competition in International Falls on the weekend.

First place finishes were put in by Amorin Campbell, Serena Cousineau, Tatum Kielczewski-Ronmark, Paige Eldridge, Reece MacNeil, Erica Lemelin, Olivia Eldridge, Angie Redford and Jamie Spencer.



Fort Frances Canadians AA pee wee team defeated International Falls Broncos 2-1 in overtime yesterday at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Jake Clendenning had the overtime winner, and Ethan Carlson-Jordain scored the other Canadians goal, a shorthanded tally.



International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Two Harbours Saturday 77-53.

The girls team defeated Two Harbours 91-37.

Local Sports For Wednesday January 16

International Falls Broncos boys hockey team won its third straight, defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 6-1.

Erik Lassila and Lucas Debenedet led the way offensively, each netting a pair of goals.



The Broncos boys basketball team also won its third straight with a 66-46 win over Hibbing.

Local Sports For Tuesday January 15

Erik Lassila scored four times and added two assists as International Falls Broncos trounced Ely 17-0.

Jakob Ettestad, Jackson Vollom, Austin Geiselhart and Jordan Tilander had two goal performances.

The Broncos outshot their opponents 50 to 6.




International Falls Broncos girls basketball team lost to Hibbing 72-71.



Teiara Martin of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team has been named a co-winner of the MCAC northern division player of the week award.

Martin paced the Voyageurs to a weekend sweep by scoring  20.5 points per game and shooting 88 per cent from the field.

It's the second time the freshman from Milwaukee has won the award.

Local Sports For Monday January 14

A pair of district teams have earned berths to the northern Ontario provincial bantam curling playdowns.

Chris Silver skipped his Fort Frances rink to a tie for first at a boys regional event held in Stratton to earn a trip to the provincial event in Longlac next month.

Jaron Hoppe of Kenora also advanced.

On the girls side, Atikokan's Hannah Bazinet earned a trip to Sioux Lookout after finishing second behind Sioux Lookout's Jenna Poirior.



Stratton's Trevor Bonot topped the standings of a northern Ontario men's qualifier in Thunder Bay to earn a berth to the provincial men's curling championship next month in Nipigon.

Bonot curls a team out of Thunder Bay.



Colton Spicer had four goals as the Fort Frances Lakers blasted Duluth Saturday 11-6.

Jordan Christianson had an 8 points night with 2 goals and six assists.



Fort Frances bantam double A Canadians earned a bronze medal at a tournament in Kenora, beating Selkirk 4-1 in the third place game.

Graeme Kitt with a pair, Hunter Koles and Scotty Williams provided the scoring.

Faith Chambers earned the win in net.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team blanked North Shore 9-0 Saturday

A couple of area teams reached the playoff rounds of the Robins Minor Hockey tournament in Thunder Bay.

Fort Frances Lions and the Green's Predators both lost in quarter-final action in the pee-wee division

Atikokan Voyageurs went 2 and 2 in pool play in the atom division.


Lakewood Tire Eagles earned silver at a girls hockey tournament in Dryden, losing to a Kenora team 4-1 in the final.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team earn a sweep on the weekend, beating Central Lakes Saturday 86-70 and Itasca Saturday 64-61.

The men lost to Central Lakers 97-58, but edged out Itasca 68-65.










Local Sports For Friday January 11

Fort Frances Muskies senior girls volleyball earned five out of a possible six points in the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball league last night.

It's their first games since teachers withdrew from extra-curricular activities in early December.

The Muskies have joined the League until the labour dispute is resolved.

In other action, I'd Hit That and Scare Hitless had the best night earning perfect scores from their wins last night.



Regional playdowns in bantam curling begin today in Stratton for a change to qualify for the Northern Ontario provincial event next month in Longlac.

Four boys and four girls teams are competing with play beginning at noon.




The Northern Ontario Regional men's qualifier is also taking place in Thunder Bay.

No teams from the Rainy River district are involved, but Trevor Bonot, formerly of Stratton, is skipping a team out of Thunder Bay.

Three teams will move to the provincials next month in Nipigon.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team dropped its second straight game, 71-55 to Grand Rapids.

They face Hibbing - 7:30 p.m tonight at Falls high School.



Fort Frances Lakers have added to their line-up in advance of a home game tonight against the Minnesota Wilderness.

Forward Tyler Brodersen has been acquired from the Soo Eagles of the North American Hockey League where he registered no points in five games.

Lakers also obtained Simon Desrosier, a defenceman from the Abitibi Eskimos of the Northern Ontario Junior League, where he's notch one goals and 17 assists in 25 games.



A couple of games involving Falls High School teams have been cancelled

A game between the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team and Greenway in Greenway will be played Monday.

As will a girls basketball game between the Broncos and Hibbing, originally schedule for tonight.



There are hockey tournaments on both sides of the border this weekend.

The Memorial Sports Centre is the site of a bantam tournament while a squirt tournament is underway in International Falls.

Several teams are at the Robin's Hockey tournament in Thunder Bay.

This morning, in the Atom A division, Atikokan beat the KC Devils 9-4.

In Peewee A, Fort Frances Lions beat KC Red Wings 5-2.

Green's Predators blanked Volunteer Pool 6-nothing.

Local Sports For Thursday January 10

Alyssa Holliday scored twice at Cater 2 U scored a 4-1 win over Fit Lifestyles and Conditioning as the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League resumed its second half.

Sara Coish and McKenna Begin also scored for the Caterers.

Jessica Wilson replied for Fit.

Elsewhere, Wright Physiotherapy edged Peters' Plumbing & Heating 3-2.

Boston Pizza earned a win by forfeit over Leon's Fort Frances.

It's the also the first games for the Fort Frances Muskies senior girls team who've entered the league while its NORWOSSA r season remain on hold because of the teachers labour dispute.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team is at Grand Rapids.



Girls hockey from last night saw the BDO Stars beat Kaemingh Esso 5-3 in peewee action.

Kelsey Langtry, Kamryn Singleton and Siobhan MacKintosh scored for the Stars.

Maighyn DeGagne and Maddy Morrison replied for Esso.


 M and M Meats beat Energy Fitness Wild 3-1 in bantam action.

Rachel Jean and Abby Plourde scored for M and M.

Local Sports For Wednesday January 9

Fort Frances Lakers earned a single point in a 3-2 shootout lost to Dryden last night at the Ice For Kids Arena.

Jacob Nolan and Jordan Christianson had given the Lakers a 2-0 lead before the Dogs forced extra play with a pair of goals in the third.

The point earned moves the Lakers into sole possession of third.



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team lost 3-2 to Virginia.

Jackson Vollom and Lucas Debenedet with the Bronco goals.



On the hardwood, the Broncos boys basketball team defeated Greenway 70-31.

The girls team lost to Warroad 58-47.



Second half of the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League inaugural season begins tonight at Fort Frances High School.

Boston Pizza finished the first half in first.

The leagues six teams will continue play through to the end of April before playoffs.



Player of the week honours for members of the Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams.

Jeff Romeus of Florida captured the distinction in the MCAC men's northern division for a second straight week, averaging 25 and a half points and 8 rebounds in two losses on the weekend.

Naila Washington, a freshman from Charlottesville, Virginia, averaged 20 points and 17 and a half rebounds in two games to capture the player of the week in the women's northern division.







Local Sports For Tuesday January 8

Fort Frances Lakers returned to action in the SIJHL tonight with a home game against the Dryden Ice Dogs.

Lakers are currently tied for third, three points back of the Dogs.



There's lots of action involving the International Falls Broncos today.

The Broncos girls hockey team hosts Eveleth-Gilbert - 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

The boys hockey team travels to Virginia.

The girls basketball team is home to Warroad - 7:15 p.m. at Falls High

The boys basketball team is at Greenway.



Girls minor hockey back in action in Fort Frances last night.

In Peewee play, Lakewood Tire Eagles beat Kaemingh Esso 10-4

Annalise Hayes, Hailey Tucker, Lillie MacKinnon and Nadia Webb providied the Eagles goals.

Maighyn DeGagne, Maddy Morrison and Emma Cole scored for Esso

And in midget action, ACO Electric Chargers blanked Pharmasave Wildcats 2-nothing

Madi DeGagne and Taylor DeGagne had the goals.

Local Sports For Monday January 7

Fort Frances native Tirzah Keefer is headed to a national curling event.

Keefer led her Thunder Bay rink to a perfect record at the northern Ontario junior women's curling championship in Sault Ste. Marie, beating Sudbury's Krysta Burns in the final to earn a spot to the national event in Fort McMurray, Alberta, next month.

Stratton's Jessica Haw finished in a tie for fifth with a 3 and 4 record.



At the junior men's event in Kapaskasking, Atikokan's Jim Turner narrowly missed out on a first-place finish, when his rink dropped their final round-robin game Saturday.

The northern Ontario title was won by Thunder Bay's Zach Warkentin in a tie-breaker over Kurtis Bryd with Isaac Keefer of Fort Frances on that city squad.



Fort Frances Lakers earned a split in its games with Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League clubs with a 6-0 win over Elliot Lake Saturday in Spooner, Wisconsin.

Colton Spicer with a pair, Hunter Leishman, Cody Wickstrom, Jon Carlson and Patrick Sofer provided the scoring.

Tanner Hamilton with the shutout in net.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team lost 3-2 in overtime to Peqout Lakes Saturday.

Amy Auran and Jenna Anderson with the Bronco goals.



The Broncos boys hockey team was defeated 8-1 by Hermantown on Saturday.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team dropped a pair of game on the weekend, first losing to Bottineau Friday 65-56 then to Bismark 76-56 on Saturday.

Local Sports For Friday January 4

Mixed results for area teams at the provincial junior curling championships.

Jim Turner's Atikokan rink split its first two games at the men's event in Kapaskasing to sit in a four-way tie for third in the men's division.

Thunder Bay's Kurtis Bryd with Isaac Keefer as vice is at the top with a 2-0 record.

On the women's side in Sault Ste. Marie, Stratton's Jessica is also 1-1 after the first day.

The field is led by Tirzah Keefer of Fort Frances, now curling a team out of Thunder Bay, who's rink won both its games yesterday.



International Falls Broncos girls basketball team won its second straight with a 71-62 victory over Virginia.



On the schedule tonight, the Broncos boys hockey team is in Duluth to take on Duluth Denfeld.

The Broncos boys basketball team is at Greenway.

Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams are in Thief River Falls for tournament action.



Fort Frances Lakers travel to Spooner, Wisconsin tonight for the first of two games with teams from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Lakers will take on the Soo Thunderbirds, leaders of the northeastern Ontario based league.

Local Sports For Thursday January 3

Fort Frances Muskies senior girls volleyball team has found a league to play in temporarily.

They're joining the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League while their regular season remains up in the air over to the teachers dispute.

They're replacing the "No Limit" team which has dropped out after recent difficulties fielding full squads.

League officials say when the Muskies return to high school action, they'll adjust their schedule for the remaining 9 teams.

The League resumes play next Thursday.



High school sports resumes at Falls High School tonight.

The International Falls Broncos girls basketball team travels to Virginia.



Two junior curling teams from the Rainy River district begin play today at the provincial junior curling championships in Kapaskasing.

Jay Turner leads a team from Atikokan in the boys side while Stratton's Jessica Haw competes in the girls.

There are a couple of other district connections as well.

Isaac Keefer of Fort Frances is playing on a Thunder Bay rink skipped by Kurtis Byrd while his sister Tirzah is skipping her own team out Thunder Bay.
