Local Sports for Wednesday November 30


Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team needed overtime to defeated the Dryden Eagles at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Muskies won 3-2.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team lost to Dryden 5-4 in Dryden.

Amy Penner, Shilo Beck, Kaily Greengrass and Ericka Tymkin provided the scoring for the Muskies.

Calie Clendenning stopped 33 of 38 shots in net for the loss.




International Falls Broncos girls basketball team opened its season with a home win over Ely 60-52.

Jenna Vergeldt led with 18 points and  16 rebounds.

Fort Frances Lakers Byron Katapaytuk has been named player of the week in the SIJHL.

The 20-year-old forward registered two goals and six assists in two weekend wins

He's now second in league scoring with 35 points.




Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams face Dryden in two different rinks tonight.

The boys are home to the Eagles begin at 6:45

The girls will travel to Dryden.




Last night in girls hockey, Lakewood Tire Eagles blanked Kaemingh Esso 4-0 in a pee-wee division match up.

Annalise Hayes with a pair, Maighyn DeGagne and Kelsey Langtry provided the scoring.



The International Falls girls hockey team defeated Lake of the Woods 5-0.




International Falls Broncos girls basketball team opens its season at home with a game against Ely.

Fort Frances Lakers fired four third period goals Saturday to rally for a 6-4 win over Duluth at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Jordan Christianson, Jaret Leclair, Adam Wensley, Byron Katapaytuk, Henry Gutierrez, Merritt Rysavy scored for the Lakers who also beat Iron Range 9-2 on Friday..




Fort Frances Nor-Fab Flames Peewee girls team captured silver at a tournament Warroard.

Flames lost to Roseau Green in the final.



In other girls hockey, the Fort Frances notice Timbits defeated Emo Rockets 11-1.

Marti Woods scored six goals for Fort Frances with four goals from Chelsey Degagne and another from Abby Roach.

Janelle Sheppard scored for Emo.



Fort Frances Canadians AA pee-wee team finished fourth at a tournament in Greenway.


Canadians ended the tourney with a 6-4 loss to Minneapolis St Frances Saints.




Fort Frances Canadians Atom AA team won the b-side of a Kenora tournament on the weekend.

The Canadians edged Kenora 3-2 in that final game.

Kaleb Bruyere, Ethan Jourdain and Brett Kenny provided the scoring.





Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team lost to Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos Friday 4-2.

Shelby Tymkin and Hailey Clendenning scored for the Muskies.





Fort Frances Aquanaut Donovan Taylor failed to reach the finals at a national swimming event in Toronto on the weekend.

His best finish was in the 50 metre backstroke where he was 30th fastest.




Members of the Border Skating Club earned a number of medals at an event in Winnipeg on the weekend.

Avery Wilson Hands brought home with a gold and two silver while Alina Eldridge medaled in three events taking a gold, silver and bronze.

Jill Bobychinski, with a silver and bronze, was the only other multiple medal winner.





Local Sports for Friday November 25


Fort Frances Lakers kick off a four-game home stand tonight against the Iron Range Ironheads.

The Ironheads are coming off an upset win over Wisconsin Wednesday.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team hosts Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos - 7 p.m. at the 52 Canadians Arena



International Falls Broncos boys hockey team has been ranked 5th in Section 7A play in a pre-season poll of Minnesota High School teams.

The Broncos open their season next week.

Local Sports for Thursday November 24


Skates and Blades and the BDO Dunwoody Stars skated to a 1-1 draw in a lone bantam division game in the Fort Frances Girls-Women's Hockey Association.

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team was forced into another shoot out with Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.

This time, the Muskies came out on 3-2.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team shut out Park Rapids 2-0.

Alyssa Bergstrom and  Michelle McDonald provided the scoring while Keanna Carlson earned the win in net

Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team will look for revenge as it stages its home opener tonight.

The Muskies face Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos.

The Muskies lost to the Broncos in a shoot out last week.




International Falls Broncos girls hockey team is home to Park Rapids 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.

Local Sports for Monday November 21


Fort Frances Lakers defeat Duluth Saturday 5-2.

Colton Spicer with a pair, Brett McMahon, Jon Carlson and Jaret Leclair scored for the Lakers.

The Lakers are now tied with Wisconsin for the league lead after the Wilderness blanked Duluth last night 6-0.



For the second week in a row, the Fort Frances Canadians AA bantam team has finished second to Dryden in tournament play.

The Canadians lost 2-1 in overtime yesterday in the final played at the Memorial Sports Centre.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team remains unbeaten.

They tying the number one ranked University of Minnesota Duluth 1-1 Saturday and then blanked them 1-nothing yesterday.

Carlee Bosma had the goal in Saturday's game

Courtney Laycock had yesterday's goal.




Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team has been ranked number two in the ACHA's season opening poll.

Minnesota-Duluth is number one, but the poll came out before the Voyageurs' games against the Bulldogs on the weekend.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team lost to Dryden 5-4 in a shoot out in the final of a tournament in Morden, Manitoba.

Bailey Bernard scored in overtime as the International Falls Broncos girls hockey team defeated Silver Bay Friday 2-1.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team splits games played on the weekend.

The Ladies lost 86-63 to Gogebic Friday before edging Vermilion Saturday 48-45.

The men lost both their games 77-69 to Gogebic and 83-77 to Itasca on Saturday.



At least two members of the Sunset Country Squash Club came away with medals at a tournament in Edmonton on the weekend.

Shawn Brady went undefeated to take the boys under 15 novice division.

Angel McCormack was the winner of the girls under 15 consolation final.

Anniss Seid just missed the final of the boys under 19 bronze division with a loss in the semi-finals.

Fort Frances Lakers take their show on the road this weekend.

They play Thunder Bay tonight before traveling to Duluth tomorrow.

The Lakers are two points up on Wisconsin for the league lead, but the Wilderness have four game in hand.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team game tonight with Sioux Lookout has apparently been cancelled.

The girls won't play now until next weekend.

The boys team meantime is in tournament play this weekend in Morden, Manitoba.

The International Falls Broncos girls team hosts Silver Bay 7:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.




Fort Frances Canadian AA bantam team hosts a tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre this weekend.

Games begin today.

Local Sports for Tuesday November 15


Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams hit the road for games in Kenora today.

The boys team looks for its second-straight win facing the Beaver Brae Broncos.

It's the third game for the girls who opened with a loss to Dryden and a win against Red Lake on the weekend.





The hockey season begins at Falls High School tonight.

The girls hockey team travels to Roseau.

Boys hockey starts later this month.



Fort Frances Lakers back on home ice for the first time in a week.


They host the Duluth Clydesdales who come in riding a 3-game winning streak.




In girls hockey from last night, Skates and Blades edged the BDO Stars 3-2 in a bantam division game.

Madisyn DeGagne, Averi King and Abbi Perreault scored for Skates and Blades.

Jessica Coran had both goals for the Stars.

Local Sports for Monday November 14


Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team opened its NORWOSSA season with a 4-3 over Dryden.

Jeff Davis, Tyler Mosbeck, Nick Jourdain and Chris Bobychinski scoring for the Muskies.



Two goals by Noah Loveday and singles from Eric Pitkanen and Brett Hahkala lead the Fort Frances Canadians AA peewee team to a 4-2 win over Dryden in the final of a tournament in Dryden.




The Canadians AA bantam team took silver at a tournament in Dryden, losing to the host Paperkings 7-2 in the final.




Current River defeated Atikokan 10-9 to win the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association's pee-wee tournament.

Fort Frances Firemen took the B-side final, 3-1 over NorWest while the Emo Hawks won the C-side over Kenora Bishop.






In the Fort Frances Girls-Women's Hockey Association, the Rolling Lake Lightning and Emo play to a 2-2 draw in an atom division game.

Trindy George had both goals for the Lightning

Pasquel Shortreed  and Reece McQuaker scored for Emo.

The Fort Frances Leafs bantam team beat the Pharmasave Wildcats midgets 4-1.

Madisyn DeGagne had a hat trick for the Leafs with Madyson Weir getting the other goal.

Jessica Robinson scored for the Wildcats.






Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team won both games of a weekend series with Minot State, 4-0 and 3-1.

Katie Stearns earned the shutout in the opener.




Two members of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team have been named to the MCAC all-state all-stars.

Kelly Sorensen of Roseau and Haylee Gates of Big Falls were both named to the 2nd Team.



Steve Arpin was back on a dirt track this weekend, placing 11th in the Duel in the Desert modified race in Las Vegas.

Local Sports for Thursday November 10


District high school schools claimed just one NORWOSSA A title played in Rainy River yesterday.

The host Owls took the junior girls basketball crown with a 41-16 win over the Atikokan Voyageurs

The Voyageurs also earned silver in junior boys volleyball, losing in four sets to Kenora's Thomas Aquinas.

Atikokan's senior boys volleyball team also lost to the Saints in four in their final.

While the Owls were 42-36 losers to Thomas Aquinas in the final of senior girls basketball.




Fort Frances Muskies compete for NORWOSSA titles on the court in Dryden.

The junior and senior boys volleyball teams and senior girls basketball team are facing Kenora this morning for the right to face Dryden in their respective finals.

The junior girls basketball team earned a bye to their final after finishing first in the regular season.



Fort Frances Lakers are on the road tonight with a game against the Iron Range Ironheads.




Members of the Borderland Roller Derby is looking for a new name.

It's being playing under the name Fort Freakshow since formed last year.



In girls hockey from last night, the Lakewood Tire Eagles defeated Kaemingh Esso 6-2 in a pee-wee division match-up.

Maignyn Degagne, Annalise Hayes and Kelsey Langtry each scored twice for the Eagles.

Jenna Clendenning and Emma Noga replied for Esso.

In the bantam division, Skate and Blades edged the BDO Stars 2-1.

Maddyson Weir replied for the Stars.

Tonight its ACO Electric Chargers midget team facing the Fort Frances Leafs bantam team at the Ice for Kids Arena beginning at 7:15 pm.

Local Sports for Tuesday November 1


Rainy River Owls and the Atikokan Voyageurs split games on the court yesterday in Rainy River.

The Owls took the girls basketball games with the seniors winning 33-31 and the junior earning a decisive 43-18 victory.

In boys volleyball, the Voyageurs won the senior match-up in four sets while the junior took a five-set match from the Owls.

In games last week, the Owls swept games played against Ignace Wednesday while the boys volleyball teams loss games to Whitefish Bay Thursday.




Fort Frances Muskies court teams end their regular season with home games against the Dryden Eagles.

The junior girls basketball team can clinch a bye to the NORWOSSA finals with a win.

Playoff take place next week in Dryden.




Fort France Lakers lead the league, but its the Wisconsin Wilderness who are still the only SIJHL team among the weekly top 20 junior A teams in Canada.

The Wilderness are second.

The Lakers did receive a honourable mention in voting this past week.
