Local Sports For Tuesday July 9

Fort Frances Her-icanes handed the Red Gut Babes their first loss in five games in the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League with a 34-13 decision.

Laureen Hill picked up the win on the mound with Caylee Woolsey and Alyssa Windego smacking home runs.

The Her-icanes remained in a second place tie with the Lynx who defeated the Sabaskong Cougars 13-10.

Sheri Tuesday with the win on the mound in that game.



Jeremy Nussbaumer scored twice as Senior Pharmasave beat Pharmasave 3-1.

Nick Spyridis added the other marker for the Seniors.

Brett Bodnarchuk replied for the junior squad.

In the other game, Manitou Forest Products forfeited to La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs U18 due to lack of players.

Women are on the field in the Borderland Soccer League tonight, weather permitting.

The league leading La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs face Taggs Source for Sports.

Boston Pizza is pitted up against Al's Racquet Stringing.

Local Sports For Monday July 8

A golden performance for a couple of members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim team.

Donovan Taylor captured gold in the 200 metre and 400 metre individual medleys and the 50 Fly, along with two silver while competing at the Man-Sask Provincial swimming championships in Winnipeg on the weekend.

12-year-old Josh Cousineau dominated his age category in the back stroke winning the 50, 100 and 200 metre events.

Despite having just two members at the event, the Fort team finished 11th overall out of 26 teams.

Bryan Gustafson and Jamie Bruce captured Lake Despair Lodge's Castin' For Cash Bass fishing tournament.



Their two-day catch of 30-point-72 pounds was almost a pound more than second place finishers Chase and Corey Curtis.

Doug and Solly McBride were third.



Karters in International Falls managed to get in a couple of event over the weekend.

Winners yesterday at Rainy Lake Oil Raceway were Garrett Froemke in beginner; Tanner Williamson in Junior 1; Wyatt Boyum in junior 2 and the senior division; Chad Jone-son in Master class and Dane Olson in the Heavy Class.

Winner from last Thursday were Brady Nicholson in beginner; Garrett Paull in junior 1; Wyatt Boyum in junior 2; Ashley Jone-son in senior; Chad Jone-son in Masters and Dane Olson in heavy division.



Red Gut goes for its fifth straight win in the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League as it takes on Fort Frances.

Red Gut has not lost this season while the Her-icanes are in a battle for second with Couchiching and the Lynx.

The Lynx face a Sabaskong Cubs still looking for a win.

In the Borderland Soccer League, the men are on the field with Pharmasave facing Senior Pharmasave.

Manitou Forest Products places the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs under 18 team.

Local Sports For Friday July 5

Seven new records were set by women at the Bronco 5 K held in International Falls yesterday.

Brandy Erholtz was the first to finish, completing the course in 19 minutes 3 seconds, setting a new record time for women and a new high mark in the female 30 to 39 age group.

And she did it while being five months pregnant.

John Sobczynski was the first male to finish, about 9 seconds back.

Other age group records were set by Lexi Erickson; Mary Strain; Linda Belanger; Betty Tomerlin and Gail Rognerud.



Fort Frances swimmer Donovan Taylor has qualified for the final of the 200 metre individual medley at the Man-Sask Long Course Provincial Championships in Winnipeg.

He swan the second fastest time in qualifying yesterday.

12-year-old Josh Cousineau narrowly missed out in reaching the final of his 200 IM by less than a second in qualifying.



La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs and Boston Pizza played to a 3-3 draw in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Jessica Caul scored twice for the Voyageurs with Maggie Jean adding the other.

Colleen Hogan booted a pair for BP with Laureen Peters notching the other.

In the other scheduled game, Taggs Source for Sports forfeited to Al's Racquet Stringing due to lack of players.



Fort Frances Lakers will hold their first camp of the season next weekend at the new Couchiching Arena.

It begins next Friday night.

Interested players can still fill out registration forms on the Lakers website and emailing to coach Wayne Strachan.



Last night in the Rainy River District Fastball League Northwest Bay defeated Sight and Sound 14-6

Ryan Smith with a pair of homers in the game.

Manitou edged the Sabaskong Cubs 5-4

Beefs Warriors beat Couchiching 14-8

And Stratton powered by Dawson 16-6

Games between the Rainy River Royals and Big Grassy Braves and Big Island and Barwick were postponed.

Local Sports For Thursday July 4

Three key players from the Fort Frances Lakers team last season have been traded.

Goalie Talor Joseph, defenceman Jon Calson and forward Colton Spicer head to the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior League for brothers Bryce and Lyndon Lipinski and a player development fee.

Lakers coach Wayne Strachan says it wasn't a trade they wanted, but three leaving requested a move.

In other Laker news, the 3rd Annual "Bob Mainville Memorial" Golf Tournament is this Saturday at Heron Landing, starting at 10 a.m.



Mike Webb scored twice in helping Senior Pharmasave to a 4-3 win over Manitou Forest Products in a men's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Jeremy Nussbaumer and Allan Albao also scored for the Seniors.

Ahamadou Idrissou scored twice in a losing cause for Manitou.

In the other game International Travel Services earned a win after the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs failed to roster a full squad.



It's women's soccer tonight at the Struchan Gilson Soccer pitches.

There's a couple of events for area runners today in International Falls.

A 5 K run or walk takes place at Falls High School.

There's also a kids fun run.

Both events are in sport of Bronco sports.

Register at the track from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. to participate.

Local Sports For Wednesday July 3

Nicole Avis notched a pair to help the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs blank Al's Racquet Stringing 7-0 in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Jess Caul, Katie Sinclair, Maggie Jean, Alexis Hampe and Erin Tomalty also scored as the Voyageurs improved to 7 and oh.

In the other game Boston Pizza shut out Taggs Source for Sports 5-0.

Laureen Peters  and Jessica Wilson each scoring twice while Anne Jean added the other.



There's a couple of events for area runners tomorrow in International Falls.

A 5 K run or walk takes place at Falls High School.

There's also a kids fun run.

You can register tonight at the school's track from 6 p.m.to 7 p.m. or tomorrow from 8 to 9 in the morning.



Men take to the field for the first time in a short week for the Borderland Soccer League.

International Travel Services is up against the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.

Local Sports For Tuesday July 2

Red Gut improved to four-and-oh in the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League with a 17-9 win over the Sabaskong Cougars.

Karen Croteau picked up the win on the mound for Red Gut.

Alyssa Windego of Red Gut and the Cougar's Ashley Kelly both hit round trippers in the game.

Couchiching moved into a three-way tie for second beating the Fort Frances Her-icanes.

Darcy Smith with the win for the Lady Raiders who are tied with Fort Frances and the Lynx at 2 and 2.




Three separate winners of the Canada Day Beach Volleyball tournament in Fort Frances.

Cynthia's Dark Angels were winners of the co-ed division.

Slick Will and the Thrifty Three took the men's title

Sexy Beaches claimed the women's crown.



Steve Arpin of Fort Frances finished fifth in his second race of the Global Rallycross Championship held on the weekend in Munich, Germany.

He's now sixth in the driver standings with the next event taking place in New Hampshire July 13.



Go-karting result from Emo Friday saw A.J. Kellar and Aric Supinski take the night's feature races.

In the borderland soccer league Boston Pizza blanked Al's Racquet Stringing 7-nothing.

Laureen Peters notched three goals in the game while  Colleen Hogan added two.

Taggs Source for Sports forfeited to La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs U18 due to lack of players.



In the Rainy River district fastball league last night, it was Big Grassy 3 Big Island 1,

Big Island also played the Sabaskong Lakers in a make up game beating them 14-4.

The Lakers later loss to the Sabaskong Cubs 12-9.

Beefs Warriors 12 Vs Manitou T-birds 6.

Northwest Bay Chieftains 11 Vs Couch Raiders 15.

Rainy River Royals lost to Stratton Eagles 7-4.

Ben McBride and Cameron Gobeil provided the scoring while Ben Whitburn earned the shut out in net as International Travel Services blanked Pharmasave 2-0 in a lone game played in the men's division of the Borderland Soccer League.

The other game saw the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs forfeit to Senior Pharmasave due to lack of players.



In the Rainy River District Fastball League, Beef's Warriors is at Manitou.

Northwest Bay plays at Couchiching.

Sabaskong Cubs and the Sabaskong Lakers play each other.

Stratton hosts Rainy River.

Dawson hosts Barwick.

The La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs under 18 team remains perfect in the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League.

Jess Caul and Alyssa Holliday scored to help the Voyageurs edge Boston Pizza 2-1 for their fifth straight win this season.

In the other game, Heather Wright and Courtney Roach each scored twice as Taggs Source for Sports defeated Al's Racquet Stringing 7-1.



Men are back on the pitch at the Struchan Gilson Soccer Fields in the Borderland Soccer League.

The La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs face Senior Pharmasave.

International Travel Services plays Pharmasave in the other game.

Local Sports For Tuesday June 25

Former Fort Frances Duncan Keith has his second Stanley Cup ring in three year.

His Chicago Blackhawks won the Cup in dramatic fashion, beating Boston 3-2 in Game 6 of the final.

Bryan Bickell and Dave Bolland scored goals 17 seconds apart late in the third period to give the Blackhawks the win.

Keith assisted on the goal by Bickell.

Patrick Kane was won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP

Kane led Chicago in scoring with nine goals and 10 assists, including nine points in his final 10 games.



The Lynx shut out Sabaskong Cougars 32-nothing in the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League.

Cameron Gobiel and Garnet Cornell each netted a pair of goals as International Travel Services shut out Manitou Forest Products 7-0 in the men's division of the Borderland Soccer League.

Issac Firth notched a pair as Pharmasave blanked the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs 5-0.



A battle between the top two teams in the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League tonight with Boston Pizza facing the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.

Voyageurs are unbeaten inn four games while BP is win back in second.

A summer camp for the Fort Frances Wolverines junior football team gets under way today, tomorrow and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fort France High School.

It's open to anyone entering grade 7 or 8 this fall and is free to participate.

Some summer hockey for a group of girls.

The Borderland Rage under 10 team recently completed play at the North American Pepsi Cup in Fargo, North Dakota, reaching the semi-finals before losing to the Northern Polar Bears.

The Rage is made up of players from Kenora, Dryden, and Fort Frances.

Local Sports For Monday June 24

Some new faces in the winners circles Emo Speedway Saturday.

Brody Strachan took the feature in the midwest modified division, his first ever win.

Darian Boyce took checks in the modified class while Kendal Gamsby was the winner in Street Stocks.



Results from the go karting races in International Falls last Thursday saw Mike Christianson take the checkered flag in the heavy class; Chad Jonson won in the master class; Cody Esler in senior; Jake Froemke in junior one; Wyatt Boyum in junior two and Garrent Froemke in Beginner.



On the go-kart track in Emo Friday, Tanner Williamson took the win in junior one, Cole Trimble in junior two, Aaron Nelson in the senior division and Garrett Froemke in the rookie class.



Three area runners participated in the Grandma's Marathon in Duluth on the weekend.

Shelley Gustafson finished in the top 20 in her age category.

Dr. Lorena Jenks scored a top 30 finish in her age division.

Kerri Davis of Atikokan also completed.

Big Grassy gained some breathing room at the top of the Rainy River District Fastball League standings, beating Beefs Warriors 9-5.

The Braves now lead the Warriors by a game an a half.

Elsewhere, Rainy River pounded Barwick 15-5.

Sight & Sound Wolves defeated Dawson Tigers 11-2.

Couchiching outscored the Sabaskong Cubs 18-12.

Northwest Bay won its second straight beating Manitou 28-20.

The game between the Sabaskong Lakers and Big Island Huskies was postponed and will be played next Wednesday.



Nine athletes with Rainy River Community College have earned MCAC honours for their achievements in the classroom.

Ben Churilla, who played both baseball and basketball; Jeff Estevez, Ty Paddock and Geno Strebing in baseball and Kendra Charrois, Rachel Clark, Brandi Cronk, Kristen Cruickshank and Colby Redhead in softball all achieved a grade point average of 3 or better.

Frontrunners in the Rainy River District Fastball League meet for the first time this season.

Big Grassy host Beef's Warriors, two days after moving a half game up on the Warriors.

In other games, Barwick entertains Rainy River, Sight and Sound is at Dawson, Big Island takes on the Sabaskong Lakers while the Sabaskong Cubs are in Couchiching.

Northwest Bay plays at Manitou.

Fort Frances Lakers have turned to the International Falls Broncos for one of their first new signings.

Lucas Debenedet has signed to play with the team.

Debenedeet had 25 goals and 56 points in 25 games in his senior year with the Broncos.



Big Grassy Braves have moved into first in the Rainy River District Fastball League, beating Rainy River 12-2.

Beef's Warriors fell a half game behind after losing to Stratton 3-2.

In other games, Duane Carlson had a pair of home runs in helping Sight and Sound to a 6-4 win over Barwick.

Faron Morrisseau tagged a pair of dingers as Couchiching outscored Dawson 18-11.

Northwest Bay won its first game of the season beating the Sabaskong Lakers 11-7.

Darren Smith hit a pair of homer for the Chieftans.

Manitou got by the Sabaskong Cubs 15-11.



In the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League, Laureen Peters notched a hat trick and Allison Brown added two as Boston Pizza edged Al's Racquet Stringing 5-4.

Sara Kellar had a pair for Al's.

The La Place Rendezvous Voyageurs nipped Taggs Source For Sports 4-3.

Maryam Seid had a pair for the Voyageurs while Sara Roach notched two for Taggs.



Men are back on the field in the Borderland Soccer League.

Local Sports For Tuesday June 18

Emo's Luke Judson is leaving the Lakehead University Thunderwolves after just one season to pursue a career in professional hockey.

He's signed on with the San Francisco Bulls of the East Coast Hockey League.

Judson was LU's rookie of the year, leading the team in goals with 22 last season.



A pair of shutouts in the men's division of the Borderland Soccer League.

Jeremy Nussbaumer scored twice in helping Senior Pharamsave to a 3-nil win over Pharmasave.

Ahamadou Idrissou had a pair in Manitou Forest Products 4-0 win over the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.



In the Borderland Soccer League tonight, it's women soccer with Boston Pizza facing Al's Racquet Stringing, and Taggs Source for Sports battling the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.

The annual beach volleyball tournament returns to Fort Frances for the Canada Day weekend.

It's a four on four event, this year involving separate tournaments for men and women, rather than a co-ed event as in the past.

Local Sports For Monday June 17

Repeat winners at Emo Speedway on the weekend.

Christopher Leek in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Ron Westover in the Street Stocks, and Gavin Paull in the WISSOTA Modifieds were feature winners Saturday.

All three also won last week.



On the go-kart track in Emo, Raice Westover was the feature winner in junior 1.

Tayla Trimble won in junior 2.

Ashley Jonson was the senior feature winner.



Go-karting in International Falls from last Thursday, winners were Mike Christianson in the Heavy Class; Chad Jonson in the Masters, Wyatt Boyum in Seniors; Jake Froemke in junior 1; Gina Boyum in junior 2 and Garret Froemke in beginner.



Lorne Ricard of Fort Frances cracked the top 100 at the Manitoba Marathon.

His finish was also good for fifth overall in the 55 to 59 age category.

Mary Hickling of Fort Frances was third in the 60 to 64 age group in the 2.6 mile run.

There were also area runners in the half-marathon and 10K events.



It's the third week of the Borderland Soccer League with men's teams in action today.

Manitou Forest Products faces the La Place Rendezvous Voyageurs.

Senior Pharmasave is up against its junior counterparts.

Laureen Peters notched a hat trick while Avery Wilson-Hands added a pair as Boston Pizza blasted Taggs Source For Sports 9-0 in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Colleen Hogan, Sierra Cousineau, Caitlin Sande and Rachel Jean also added goals for Boston while Amy Wilson-Hands picked up the shutout in net.

In the other game La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs beat Al's Racquet Stringing 3-1

Maryam Seid, Maggie Jean and Hailey Beaudry scored for the Voyageurs.

Sara Kellar replied for Al's.

In the men's division tonight, it's the battle of Pharmasave teams with the Seniors up against their junior counterparts.

Manitou Forest Products plays La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.
