Local Sports For Thursday August 29

Fort Frances Lakers kick off their training camp today.

Almost 40 players are expected.

Coach Wayne Strachan says he'll be looking to fill several vacancies.

Strachan hopes to pair down the potential roster to 25 with final cuts made in four pre-season games.



Big Grassy Braves are once again the champions of the Rainy River District Men's Fastball League.

They beat Barwick Tuesday night 8-1 to take the title.

The Braves went undefeated during their playoff run.



Tonight, the Fort France Her-icanes and the Red Gut Babes play for the Women's Fastball title.

As the Babes have yet to lose in the post-season, the Her-icanes need to win twice.



Fort Frances Muskies football team travels to Kenora for a trio of exhibition games.

They'll face the host Beaver Brae Broncos, Dryden Eagles and Winnipeg's Grant Park.

The team says its still welcoming new players to the squad.

Local Sports For Tuesday August 27

Fort Frances Her-icanes have earned a trip to the final of the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League.

The Her-icanes beat Couchiching 9-6 to face Red Gut in Thursday's final.

A second game will be played if Fort Frances beats the Babes who've not lost in the double elimination format.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team won its first match of the season, defeating Two Harbours in straight sets - 25-12, 25-14 and 25-8.



Fort Frances Lakers will play four exhibition games in advance of the upcoming season.

Home games will be played September 6 against the Minnesota Iron Rangers and September 14th against the Wisconsin Wilderness.

A game September 12 in Marathon against the Thunder Bay North Stars will be held in honour of former Laker Jaret LeClair and three other Pic River residents killed in a car accident last October.



Some success for a pair of regional girls hockey teams on the weekend.

Borderland Rage Under-14 team finished second at a tournament in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota.

The under 10-team reached the semi-finals of its division.

Both teams are made up of girls from across the Kenora and Rainy River districts.



Fort Frances Muskies football team is into its 2nd week of tryouts.

Practices at Muskie field will happen right after school at 3:30 p.m.

Local Sports For Monday August 26

Nathan Bringham and Brett Meyers of Emo captured the International Falls Bass Championship.

Their two-day combined weight of just under 34 lbs was more than a pound and a half better the runner ups Scott Dingwall and Jeff Gustafson.



Emo Speedway ended its regular season with Gavin Paull in the Modified class, Christopher Leek in the midwest modified and Ron Westover in the Street stocks declared champions.

Feature winners from the night were Steve Nordin in modified, Leek in midwest mods and Tylar Wilson in Street stocks.



Results from go-karting in Emo Friday saw Delbert Colette take the win in the senior class - Carter Kinnear in junior 2; Justin Besch in junior 1 and Peiton Kinnear in rookie.



Clairre Kissane was the overall winner of the International Falls Bass Dash Saturday, finishing the 5K run in a time of 19 minutes 32 seconds.

Justin Besch was the top male runner completing the course in just over 22 minutes.

108 runners took part.

The Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team went winless in four matches at the Fergus Falls Tournament on Saturday, losing to Bismark State College, Rochester, Itasca, and Vermilion along the way.

The Voyageurs are in Thief River Falls Wednesday to play Northland.



The SIJHL will kick off its 2013-14 campaign in Fort Frances.

The Lakers will host the Thunder Bay North Stars September 20th in one of two games that night to start the league's 13th season.

Local Sports For Friday August 23

Duncan Keith is getting ready for his shot at another Olympic gold medal.

The former Fort Frances native heads to Calgary this weekend for the starting of an orientation camp for Canada's hockey team.

Keith was part of Canada's winning team in Vancouver in 2010.



International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team lost a 4 set match to Mountain Iron-Buhl to open its season.

Scores were 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 25-19.

Emo's Christopher Leek was third in the midwest modified feature and finishes third in points.

Cody Ossachuk of Pinewood was ninth in the same race.

Steve Nordin of Stratton was 6th in the modified feature.



First day of fishing the International Bass Championship goes today.

Duane and John Peterson of Bemijdi are the defending champs.

First day weigh-in's at Smokey Bear Park start at 4 p.m.

Local Sports For Thursday August 22

Fastball playoffs are getting down to the final teams.

The men's league has Barwick battling Sight and Sought with the winner to take on Big Grassy Braves for the league title next week.

In the women's league, Red Gut faces Fort Frances while the Big Grassy Lynx face Couchiching with the winners advancing to next week's final.



High school sports begin for at least one team today.

The International Falls Broncos girls volleyball team opens its season with a home game tonight against Mountain Iron-Buhl.



In go-kart racing in International Falls from Tuesday, feature winners were Brady Nicholson in the beginner class - Jake Froemke in Junior 1 - Wyatt Boyum in Junior 2 - Aaron Nelson in the senior division - Chad Jonson (JONE-son) in Master class - and Mike Christianson in the Heavy division.

Next races are next Thursday.

Local Sports For Wednesday August 21

The Big Grassy Braves after back in the final of the Rainy River District Fastball League championship.

The defending champs advanced with 15-0 victory over Barwick.

They'll now await the winner between the Knights and Sight and Sound with the Wolves reaching the second semi-final game by beating Manitou 3-1.



Registration for the Fort Frances junior football team will take place tonight.

It's open to any student, boy or girl, attending grade 7 or 8.

Sign up at Muskie field at 6 p.m. and costs $140 to play.

Youngsters must bring their birth certificate and health card.



A couple of bass fishing tournament go this weekend.

Both the International Falls Bass Championship and the Morson Bass International are still accepting entries.

Fee to the Morson event is $400.

The Falls tournament is $500 U.S.

Entry forms can be found on the tournament's websites.




Indoor football is coming to Bemidji.

The city has landed an expansion franchise in the Indoor Football League.

The yet to be named team will play in Bemidji's Sanford Centre beginning next February

The league, now with 10 teams, has been in existence since 2009.

Local Sports For Tuesday August 20

In the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League playoffs,  Red Gut defeat Couchiching 5-3 with Lynn Windego earning the win on the mound.

The Lynn defeated Sabaskong 22-8.

Karma Andy credited with the win.


Ladd Ojala of Minneapolis was the first to finish among 60 competitors taking part in the Backus Rainy Lake Triathlon on the weekend.

He finished in just over 1 hours and 2 minutes.

Kari Heyn, of McGregor, Iowa was the first female finisher, placing second overall.

Jeff Tilbury of Fort Frances was third.

Local Sports For Monday August 19

A pair of local drivers walked away with championship trophies at the Borderland Racing Association's Rae Memorial weekend.

Jamie Davis of Devlin narrowly edged out Gavin Paull for the title in the WISSOTA modified division after winning the feature Saturday.


Emo's Christopher Leek took the Midwest modified division while Cody Walls of Winkler Manitoba claimed the Street Stock title.




Greg Ferris of Emo was 5th in the Late Model feature in Hibbing Saturday.

Kyle Gavel of Fort Frances was 7th.

Both drivers stand 2nd and 3rd in the points standings with one race to go.

Ricke Roche of International was 10th in the Modified feature at the same track.




Todd and Steven Bryk captured the Atikokan Bass classic.

They finished the two-day tournament with a combined catch of just over 38 pounds of bass.

Last year's champions, Trevor Zimak and Glenn Leroux of Thunder Bay, finished half a pound back in second.

They'll begin at 6:30 p.m. each evening and open to any student entering grade 9 through to 12.

The Muskies open their season at home September 4 against St. John's.

Women's fastball playoffs continue with Red Gut Babes playing the Lady Raiders at Couchiching and the Lynx facing Sabaskong.

On the weekend, the Lynx captured its own tournament in Big Grassy, beating Couchiching 35-8 in the final.

Hot Bunz defeated Sabaskong 20-11 for the B-side championship.




The Borderland Soccer League has handed out its hardware.

Ahamadou Idrissou of Manitou Forest Products and Laureen Peters of Boston Pizza repeated as the league's scoring leaders.

Ben Whitburn of International Travel Services and Amy Wilson-Hands of Boston were top netminders.

Top rookies were Jamie Veldhuisen of International Travel Services and Erin Tomalty of the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.

Ian Friesen of International Travel Services and Colleen Hogan of BP were MVPs.

Local Sports For Friday August 16

Borderland Soccer Action saw La Place Rendezvous-Vous Voyageurs U18 shut out Boston Pizza 4-0 to take the women's division title.

Maryam Seid scored twice while Alyssa Holliday and Jess Caul added singles.

Amy Penner earned the shut out

Senior Pharmasave and International Travel Services had a 1-1 tie in their matchup.

But Senior Pharmasave took the match 4-3 in penalty kicks to take the men's title.

Mike Ohman scored for Senior Pharmasave while Cameron Gobeil scored for ITS.



A big night of racing last night at the Go Kart Track in Emo.

Garrett Froemke took the rookie class while Tanner Williamson and Carter Kinnear won the Junior 1 and 2 class titles.

The Senior class went to Wyatt Boyum and Dane Olson captured the Heavy class.



Emo's Christopher Leek took to the track in Grand Rapids, Minnesota yesterday for the WISSOTA modified feature finishing 8th.

Leek remains 4th in the standings at the track.

Racing begins at 6:30 p.m. both tonight and tomorrow.

Practices will be held each evening starting at 6:30 until the start of the school year.

All interested students from Grade 9 through 12 must be in attendance.



A women's fastball tournament starts today in Big Grassy.

The event, hosted by the Lynx, runs as part of this weekends pow-wow.

Finals go Sunday.



Registration continues for next month Aquathon in Fort Frances.

Entry forms are still available for the September 8th event and can be obtained at the Memorial Sports Centre, or by contacting the Rainy Lake Triathlon Club at 274-6848.

It includes a 750 metre swim and and a 5K run.

Cost is 25 dollars or 30 dollars as a team.

Manitou Forest Products and Taggs Source for Sports have taken the consolation finals for the Borderland Soccer League.

Kyle Herr booted three goals in helped Manitou to a 6-2 win over the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.

Chris Faragher, Chris Sinclair and Ahamadou Idrissou had the others.

Tyler Ruppenstein and Jacob Bolzan replied for the Voyageurs

In the women's division, Taggs doubled up  Al's Racquet Stringing 4-2

Courtney Roach, Sara Roach, Rebecca Selman and Wynonna Kavanaugh scoring for Taggs.

Nina Barnard netting both for Al's.

Champions will be crowned in the Borderland Soccer League tonight with the top four teams from the  regular season doing battle.

International Travel Services takes on Senior Pharmasave for the men's title.

The La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs under 18 team facing Boston Pizza for the women's crown.

Manitou takes on Stratton with Sight and Sound facing Beefs Warriors.

Winners will play each other next Tuesday for the right to play in a semi-final contest.



Playoffs in the Rainy River District women's fastball league continue with one game on the schedule.

The Lynx face the Sabaskong.

A game between Red Gut and Couchiching has been postponed.



It's a special night of go-karting in Emo tonight.

Members of the Borderland Kart Club will be hold their race events tonight to coincide with the fair.

Local Sports For Wednesday August 14

Two teams have reached the semi-finals while two others have been eliminated from the Rainy River District Men's Fastball League playoff.

Big Grassy Braves beat Manitou 6-2 to reach the semis and will play Barwick next Tuesday after the Blue Knights edged out Beefs Warriors 6-5.

On the losing end, Dawson was eliminated, falling 10-1 to Stratton.

Sight and Sound ended Big Island's run with a 12-1 victory.

Johnny Desaulniers had a pair of homes in the same.

Monday, Sight and Sound had put down the Rainy River Royals  10-2.



It will be the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs and Boston Pizza playing for the women's division championship in the Borderland Soccer League.

The Voyageurs advanced by beating Al's Racquet Stringing 8-1.

Maryam Seid and Jess Caul each had a pair of goals while Angel McCormack, Hailey Beaudry, Maggie Jean adding singles Angela Cole.

And Boston Pizza reached the final with a 2-nil win over Taggs Source for Sports.

Local Sports For Tuesday August 13

The top two teams in the regular season, will meet Thursday for the men's soccer crown in the Borderland Soccer League.

Regular season champs, International Travel Services advanced, beating the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 6-1.

Ian Friesen, Daniel Cunningham, Cameron Gobeil, Marouane Cheblaoui, Gavin Moorhouse and Garnet Cornell scored for ITS.

Tyler Ruppenstein replied for the Voyageurs.

Senior Pharmasave needed penalty kicks to get by Manitou Forest Products.

The teams had tied 1-1 after in regulation with Allan Albao scoring for the Seniors and Ahamadou Idrissou scoring for Manitou.



First round of the Rainy River District Women's Fastball playoffs saw Couchiching defeat the Lynx 12-4

The Fort Frances Her-icanes beat Sabaskong.

No score was provided.

Local Sports For Monday August 12

The third and final day of the Kenora Bass International was a good one for Bill Godin of Devlin and Leroy Wilson of International Falls.

The team came in with the top catch of the day at 18.6 pounds to take the tournament, earning just over 21-thousand dollars for their win.



Gavin Paull captured the feature win in the WISSOTA modified division Saturday at Emo speedway.

Matt DePiero took the win in the Midwest Modifieds while Ron Westover took checkers in the Street Stocks.



Emo's Greg Ferris finished third in the late model feature at Hibbing Raceway Saturday.

Kyle Gavel of Fort Frances was 10th.

Ferris is 2nd in points standings while Gavel is 4th.



On the go-kart track in Emo Friday, winners were Peiton Kinnear in the rookie division - Justin Besch in junior 1 - Jylian Westover in junior 2 and Aric Supinski in senior.



Winners from the go-kart races in International Falls from last Thursday were Garret Froemke in beginner - Jake Froemke in junior 1 - Gina Boyum in junior 2 - Wyatt Boyum in senior - Aaron Nelson in master  and Rusty Mai in the heavy division.



Steve Arpin was last in a Global Rallycross event in Atlanta, Georgia.

Despite the finish, he improve to 7th in the driver standings.



Sight and Sound Wolves reached the quarter-finals of the A-Major division b-side before being eliminated from the North American Fastpitch World Series in Des Moines, Iowa.

The team went 5 and 2 in the tournament.



There's playoff action in fastball on two fronts tonight.

Sight and Sound Wolves, back from their performance in Des Moines, face Rainy River in a men's game postponed from last week.

The women have two games on the schedule with the Fort Frances Her-icanes taking on the Sabaskong Cougars while the Lynx do battle with the Couchiching Lady Raiders.



In a late men's score from last weekend.

Dawson advanced beating Northwest Bay 12-7.




Men's division continues its playoffs in the Borderland Soccer League.

Regular season champs, International Travel Services takes on La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs, fresh off a surprising win against Pharmasave last week.

Fort Frances Lakers have another of their rookies from last season back.

Geraldton's Miles Nolan was primarily used as checking centre, but coaches are hoping for a breakout season offensively this year.

Local Sports For Friday August 9

A pair of big wins for the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs under 18 soccer teams.

The women's team beat Boston Pizza 5-1 to capture finish the regular season first overall.

Nicole Avis scored three times while Jess Caul added two others.

Allison Brown had BP's lone marker.

On the men's side, Voyageurs scored a 1-nil upset win over Pharmasave to advance to the semi-finals next week.

Matt Berube provided the scoring.



International Falls has been eliminated from the State VFW baseball championship on the first day of the event, dropping its opener 3-0 to Hutchison, then falling 10-5 to Brainard.



Sight and Sound Wolves split games in the opening day of the North American Fastpitch World Series in Des Moines, Iowa.

They beat Tulsa, Oklahamo before losing to the Bedford Rays of Pennsylvania.

They face Sheddy's of Monfort, Wisconsin this morning.



Emo's Christopher Leek was 4th in the midwest modified feature at Grand Rapids Speedway last night.

It dropped him from 4th to 7th in drivers' standings at the Minnesota track

Local Sports For Thursday August 8

International Travel Services has captured the regular season crown in the Borderland Soccer League's men's decision, beating Senior Pharmasave 3-1

Cameron Gobeil scored twice with Lucas Koomans added the other for ITS.

Jeremy Nussbaumer replied for the Seniors.

Ahamadou Idrissou secured the men's scoring title by booting 5 goals in Manitou Forest Products 7-2 win over La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.

Idrissou finishes the season with 18 goals.

Cole Tymkin and Benedict von Holtzendorff also replied for Manitou.

Connor Bujold scored both for the Voyageurs.

Playoffs in the men's division begin tonight.

The final game in the women's division also takes place with first place on the line.

Boston Pizza takes on the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs with both teams tied for first.



Sight and Sound Wolves again represent the Rainy River District Fastball League at the North American Fast Pitch World Series in Des Moines, Iowa.

They play their first game this morning in the A-Major division against the Tulsa, Oklahoma, Gray Sox.



A team from International Falls begins a challenge today for the State VFW baseball title in Ely.

The Falls faces Hutchinson this morning to open the 10-team tournament.



First day of fishing at the Kenora Bass International goes today with a number of anglers from the Rainy River district involved.

Local Sports For Wednesday August 7

A pair of player acquired in a recent trade with Portage of the Manitoba junior league have been inked by the Fort Frances Lakers.

Twin brothers Bryce and Lydon Lipinski will join the Lakers when they open training camp at the end of the month.

Lakers coaching staff feel the pair of 20-year-olds will be valuable both on and off the ice for leadership and guidance of their younger players.



Laureen Peters provided all the scoring as Boston Pizza edged the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 3-2.

The win B-P into a tie for first with the Voyageurs in the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League with both teams having one game to play.

Jess Caul scored for the Voyageurs with other goal credited as an own goal against Boston.

The other match up saw Al's Racquet Stringing and Taggs Source for Sports play to a 4-4 draw.

Sara Kellar had 3 goals for Al's.

Myla Angus had the other for Al's.

Scoring for Taggs were Sara Roach, Tara MacEachern, Liz Morrisseau and Wynonna Kavanaugh.



A regional girls hockey team was victorious at the USA International Hockey Cup tournament in Blaine, Minnesota on the weekend.

An under 12 team, playing at the Thunder Bolts took the division, going 5-0 along the way, outscoring their opponents 36-3.

The team was made up of girls from the Fort Frances, Dryden, Thunder Bay and Kenora areas.

Local Sports For Tuesday August 6

Rainy River District Women's Fastball League has closed out the regular season of its inaugural year.

Fort Frances Her-icanes beat the Lynx 17-5.

Red Gut defeated the Couchiching Lady Raiders 15-2.

Playoffs will begin next week.




Tough day on the track for Steve Arpin at the Global Rallycross in Los Angeles.

The Fort Frances native crashed in his opening heat Saturday then had to withdraw from a qualifying event due to an overheating problem.

It's the first time he's failed to reach a final this season.



Feature winners from Go karting at Emo Friday were Justin Besch in Junior 1 and A.J. Kellar in Junior 2.



A number of anglers participated in the Moose Lodge's fishing derby on Saturday.

Adult winners were John Hatzenburger for Northern, Kallie Kantos-Fritz for Bass and Kenny Long for both Crappie or Perch and largest Walleye stringer.

Youth winners were Parker Grindall for northern, Logan Coval for bass, Tanner Grindall for crappie and Nicholas Brnath for Walleye.



The Borderland Rage Under 10 girls team reached the consolation final of the USA International Hockey Cup tournament in Blaine, Minnesota, losing 6-1.

The team, made up of players from Kenora, Dryden, and Fort Frances area, won one of five games played.

Jillian Calder was the teams leading scorer with 4 goals and 6 points.



Several teams will be fighting to stay alive in the Rainy River District Fastball League  tonight.

Weather permitting, Dawson plays Northwest Bay

Stratton takes on Couchiching.

Big Island faces the Sabaskong Cubs.

And Rainy River tangles with Sight and Sound.

Losers will be eliminated from further play.



The Borderland Soccer League uses this week to wrap up its regular season.

Tonight's its women's on the field with the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs facing Boston Pizza.

Local Sports For Friday August 2

Sabaskong Lakers are the first team to be eliminated from the Rainy River District Fastball League playoffs.

The Lakers suffered their second loss, losing 13-12 to Dawson.

Elsewhere Big Grassy blanked Big Island 20-0 on homeruns from Kimi Copenance, Travis Tom and Roger Allan.

Manitou got by Sight and Sound 6-1.

Barwick beat Northwest Bay 8-1.

Beefs Warriours edged Stratton 6-5.



Both games in the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League ended up forfeits because teams couldn't field full squads.

Boston Pizza was handed the win over Al's Racquet Stringing.

Taggs Source for Sports forfeited to La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.



The Borderland Rage Under 10 girls team will play their first game this morning at the USA International Hockey Cup tournament in Blaine, Minnesota, when they take on the Minnesota Miracle.

The Rage are made up of players from Kenora, Dryden, and Fort Frances.



Lobbying continues to convince former Fort Frances resident Duncan Keith to bring the Stanley Cup to Fort Frances.

Local Sports For Thursday August 1

A pair of goals off the boots of Jason Kabel and Alan Albao paced Senior Pharmasave to an 8-2 win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs in a men's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Mike Webb, Daryl Alleston, Nick Spyridis and D.J. MacKintosh rounded out the Senior's scoring.

Jacob Bolzan had both for the Voyageurs.

In the other game, International Travel Services doubled up Pharmasave 4-2.

Ian Friesen, Dan Cunningham, Cameron Gobeil and Ben McBride scored for ITS.

Kevin Metke and Sam Berube replied for Pharmasave.



The Borderland Soccer League ends its week with a pair of games in the women's division.

Boston Pizza faces Al's Racquet Stringing.

Taggs Sources for Sports plays the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.



A women's fastball tournament is being planned at Big Grassy First Nation.

It will be held August 16, 17 and 18 and hosted by the Lynx of the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League.

First eight teams to register will be entered.

Cody Wickstrom of Marquette, Michigan returns for a second season after recording 10 points in 40 games last season.

Coach Wayne Strachan says Wickstrom will be relied upon for a veteran presence on the blueline, increased minutes in play and to play a two-way style.

Local Sports For Wednesday July 31

First round of the Rainy River District Fastball League playoffs opened with at least one upset.

11th seeded Northwest Bay beat the number 6 seed Rainy River 16-10.

The Chieftans had won just five games during the regular season.

Elsewhere Stratton advanced with a 10-2 win over the Sabaskong Cubs.

Manitou got by the Sabaskong Lakers 6-1.

Sight and Sound defeated Dawson 9-4.

Big Island beat the Couchiching Raiders 11-7.



Three goals from Laureen Peters helped Boston Pizza to a 5-4 win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

It's the Voyageurs first loss.

Caitlin Sande and Mel Hyatt had the other goals for BP.

Angela Cole with a pair, Jessica Caul and Sydney Radigan replied for the Voyageurs.

In the other game, Taggs Source for Sports defeated Al's Racquet Stringing 7-2

Courtney Roach, Sara Roach, Heather Wright, Wynonna Kavanaugh, Tara MacEachern, Eizabeth Morrisseau and Meghan Metke scored for Taggs.

Carla Penner had both goals for Al's.



Men's soccer continues in the Borderland Soccer League tonight.

Pharmasave faces International Travel Services.

La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs is up against Senior Pharmasave.




Registration is now being accepted for an upcoming aquathon in Fort Frances.

The September 8 event includes a 750 metre swim and a 5 kilometre run starting at Pither's Point Park.

Cost is 25 a person or 30 dollars for a team.

Couchiching Lady Raiders have taken over first place in the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League.

Their 20-3 win over the Sabaskong Cougars, combined by the Lynx 16-13 defeat of the Red Gut Babes has moved the Raiders a half game ahead of Babes for first.

In third game played, Fort Frances Her-icanes beat Sabaskong 20-2.



First round of the double knocked playoffs in the Rainy River District Fastball League goes tonight.

Stratton hosts the Sabaskong Cubs.

Rainy River entertains Northwest Bay.

Manitou faces the Sabaskong Lakers.

Sight and Sounds hosts Dawson.

Couchiching is in Big Island.

Big Grassy, Beefs Warriors and Barwick all earn byes. 



Kevin Metke scored three times and Brendan Cawston added two others as Pharmasave shut out the La Place Rendezvous-Vous Voyageurs 8-0.

Tim Metke, Sam Berube and Lucas Hudson rounded out Pharmasave's scoring.

In the other game in the men's division of the Borderland Soccer League, Manitou Forest Products forfeited to to International Travel Services due to lack of players.

Results from go-karting in International Falls from last Thursday saw Garrett Froemke take the Beginner class.

Jake Froemke win in Junior 1.

Gina Boyum took Junior 2.

Aaron Nelson won in Senior division while Brian Nelson took the Master division race.

Dane Olson claimed the win in the Heavy division.



Early registration is being accepted for a 5K event in International next month.

The 5K Bass Dash Run or Walk will be held August 24 as part of the International Falls Bass Championship.

The fee to enter is 20-dollars until August 10 with it increasing to $25 after that date.

Registration forms at Falls Chamber, Stride Fitness or on the Bass Championship's website.



The latest fishing derby in the Borderland will be staged this weekend by the Moose Lodge in International Falls.

It takes place Saturday at the Thunderbird Lodge from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Prizes will be given out in the categories of Biggest Walleye, Bass, Crappie, Northern, and Walleye stringer.

It costs 7 dollars to take part, 4 dollars if your under 16.

Jamie Davis captured his second feature win in three weeks, taking the WISSOTA modified race at Emo Speedway on Saturday.

Cody Ossachuk was a first time winner in the Wissota Midwest Modified division while Kendal Gamsby won his second this year in Street Stocks.



On the go-kart track in Emo yesterday, Paiten Kinnear won the feature in the rookie class.

Raice Westover won in junior 1; AJ Kellar in junior 2 and Delbert Collette in the senior division.



A team from Fort Frances reached the C-side final of a men's soccer tournament in Kenora, losing 1-0 to Stonewall.



The Borderland Soccer League is in the final weeks of its season with the men on the field tonight.

International Travel Services is up against Manitou Forest Products.

Pharmasave plays the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.



In the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League, the Sabaskong Cougars face the Couchiching Lady Raiders.

Local Sports For Friday July 26

Anglers are returning to the water this morning for the second day of fishing at the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship.

Jeff Gustason of Kenora and John Peterson of Bemidgi lead the field, pulling in over 19 pounds of bass yesterday.

Chad Adrain and Caleb Colwell of Green Bay are are half pound back in second.



Three athletes, two builders and a sports team are being inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

Paralympian swimmer Andrea Cole and hockey players Katie Weatherston and Tony Hrkac will be formally inducted this September.

They will be joined by builders Brian Mallon and Brian McLean, as well as the 1991 Canadian Open Lightning Class championship team.



The regular season for the Rainy River District Fastball League is now over.

The final three games were played this week with the Sabaskong Cubs edging Sight and Sound 5-4.

Earlier Sight and Sound beat Stratton 5-2.

The Big Grassy Braves finised first overall with a 16 and 2 record after beating Rainy River 4-2.

Playoffs are scheduled to start next week.

The first day of fishing in the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship goes today with the over 90 angling teams involving leaving the Sorting Gap Marina starting at 7 a.m.

Mark Raveling of Minnesota and Mike Luhman of Wisconsin are back as defending champions.

Weigh in at the Sorting Gap Marina begin at about 3:30 p.m.

93.1 The Border will be on site with live updates.



Fort Frances Lakers have another returnee back in the line up for the coming season.

Patrick Sofer, who hails from Chicago, was fifth in team scoring last season with 13 goals and 30 points.

Coach Wayne Strachan says he sees the 20-year-old being one of this year's leaders playing a key role up front and producing offensively.



Senior Pharmasave is back on top in the Borderland Soccer League men's division.

It defeated Pharmasave 5-3 to leap over idle International Travel Services for first.

Jeremy Nussbaumer scored three for the Seniors with Jeff Campbell adding two more.

Ryan Brady, Rory Bagacki and Sam Berube scored for the junior team.

In the other scheduled game the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs forfeit to Manitou Forest Products.

Local Sports For Wednesday July 24

Hat trick by Nicole Avis and Jess Caul paced the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs to a 10-0 win over Al's Racquet Stringing in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Maggie Jean, Maryam Seid, Amy Penner and Alyssa Holliday also scored for the Voyageurs who have not lost in 12 games this season.

Laureen Peters and Jessica Wilson each had a trio of goals as Boston Pizza beat Taggs Source 9-1.

Melanie Hyatt, Colleen Hogan & Abbi Perreault add the other BP goals.

Rebecca Selman replied for Taggs.






The Fort Frances Curling Club is looking for memorabilia around the 1952 Allan Cup winning Fort Frances Canadians.

The items would be showcased in a TSN story being done for the upcoming Kraft Celebration Tour.

If you have original newspaper articles, sweaters, jackets, sticks, photographs, you're ask to bring them down to the Memorial Sport Centre.

Team Lynx stopped the league leading Red Gut Babes' four-game win streak, 19-18 in a Rainy River District Women's Fastball league game

The Lynx moved into third place with the win.

Couchiching Lady Raiders took sole possession of second with a 26-9 win over the Sabaskong Cougars.



International Travel Services took over first place in the men's division of the Borderland Soccer League with a 2-0 win over Senior Pharmasave.

Maxwell Williams and Cameron Gobeil scored for I-T-S who sit a point up on the Seniors.

Elsewhere, scoring leader Ahamadou Idrisou scored twice at Manitou Forest Products edged the junior Pharmasave squad 3-2.

Brandon Sinclair also scored for Manitou.

Lucas Hudson and Kevin Metke for Pharmasave.



The La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs will look to make it 12 games in a row without a loss as they face Al's Racquet Stringing in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

The Voyageurs are six points up on Boston Pizza who face Taggs Source for Sports in the the night's other game.




Former Fort Frances native Duncan Keith is among those who have been invited to Canada's Olympic training camp

He was also part of the 2010 gold medal team.

Local Sports For Monday July 22

At Emo Speedway Saturday, Gavin Paull claimed his three feature win of the year in the WISSOTA modified division.

Brady Caul was a first time winner in the Midwest modified.

Kendal Gamsby took checkers in the Street Stocks for a second time this season.



Go-karting Friday at Emo saw Tanner Williamson win in junior 1; A.J. Kellar in junior 2, Blair Plourde in the Senior open division and Landon Lowes taking the win in the rookie class.



Another early end for Fort Frances native Steve Arpin in a Global Rallycross race.

Arpin reached the final for the race in Bristol, Tennessee, but a flat tire to an early exist.

Arpins now 8th in the driver championship standings.



Forty-five riders from across Northwestern Ontario on hand for the first ever BMX jam held at Quetico College School - formerly Quetico Centre.

The event also attract about one hundred spectators.

Thunder Bay bikers swept events with Justin DesRosiers winning the expert division, Adrian McWilliams in the Amateur class and and Deacon Hummell taking the Under 14 division.



Fort Frances Lakers have signed a couple players coming out of its prospect camp on the weekend.

Mason Meyer and Hunter Leishman both return for a second season.

Meyer was the team's rookie of the year while Leishman end the season with 10 points in 42 games.

Main camp opens at the end of August.



A pair of homegrown players will play for Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team season.

Will Anderson, who played with the Muskies last season, and John Relller, a guard from Littlefork-Big Falls High, are among four players to sign on with the International Falls college.

The Voyageurs are also announcing the signings of Ezekiel Bennett, a point-guard from West Palm Beach, Florida and Ashton Richardson, a forward from Houston, Texas.



On the women's fastball schedule tonight,  Couchiching host the Sabaskong Cougars.

Red Gut faces the Lynx.



In the Borderland Soccer League, the men kick off another week of play.

League leaders Senior Pharmasave face second place International Travel Services with the Travellers just two points back.

The Big Grassy Braves are this year's regular season champ in the Rainy River District Fastball League.

The Braves beat Dawson 3-2 to clinch first overall while second-place Beefs Warriors fell 8-0 to Sight and Sound in their final game of the year.

Elsewhere, Manitou shut out the Sabaskong Lakers 1-0.

The Sabaskong Cubs squeezed by Northwest Bay 6-5.

Fort Frances Lakers kick off a summer camp for prospective players at the new Couchiching Arena

Registration is tonight at 6:45 p.m.with on-ice activities running through the weekend.



BMX racing goes in Atikokan for the first time.

A new track has been constructed at the new Quetico College School, formerly Quetico Centre.

Sunday's race starts at 11 a.m. and riders can register on the day of the event.



The sixth race of the season for the Superior Dirt Riders is in Atikokan

Registration at the Atikokan Motocross begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow with races starting at 11 a.m.

A practice has also been scheduled for tonight from 4 p.m.to 7 p.m. with a cost of 25-dollars to riders.

Local Sports For Thursday July 18

Two goals each from Nick Spyridis, Jeremy Nussbaumer and Allan Albao helped pace Senior Pharmasave to a 7-1 win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs in a men's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

Daryl Alleston had the other goal for the Seniors while Adam Stromberg replied for the Voyageurs.

International Travel Services blanked Pharmasave 4-0.

Ben McBride, Cameron Gobeil, Lucas Koomans and Gavin Moorhouse scoring for ITS.



Women's soccer is scheduled for tonight in the Borderland Soccer League.

The league leading La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs are up against Taggs Source for Sports.

Al's Racquet Stringing plays Boston Pizza.



Three games are on the schedule in the Rainy River District Fastball League.

Sight and Sound is at Beef's Warriors.

A Warriors loss gives Big Grassy the regular season crown.

Elsewhere the Sabaskong Lakers travel to Manitou.

Northwest Bay plays the Cubs at Sabaskong.



Weather has impacted one sporting event.

Go karting at Rainy Lake Oil Speedway in International Falls has been cancelled.

They'll go again next Thursday night, weather pending.

Local Sports For Wednesday July 17

The front runners in the Rainy River District Fastball League are keeping pace with one another.

Travis Tom smacked three home runs in leading the Big Grassy Braves to a 13-2 win over Big Island.

The Brave remain a half game up on Beefs Warriors who shut out the Sabaskong Lakers 11-nothing.

Barwick closed its regular season with a 7-1 win over Dawson and current sit third.

Manitou blanked Northwest Bay 11-0.

Rainy River leaped to fifth with a 10-7 win over Stratton.

Sight and Sound blitzed Couchiching 26-0.



Women's games in the Borderland Soccer League were rain out.

Men's teams are on the field tonight.

Local Sports For Tuesday July 16

The Sabaskong Cougars won their first game of the year in the Rainy River Distrct Women's Fastball League, beating the Fort Frances Her-icanes 12-9

Hazel Copenace pitched for the win for the Cougars.

Couchiching Lady Raiders moved into sole possession of second place with a 27-2 win over the Lynx.

Sidney Jones earning the win for the Raiders.



The Rainy River District Fastball League is getting down the final days of its schedule.

There's a full slate of games today with Couchiching is at Sight and Sound.

Sabaskong Lakers play Beef's Warriors.

Manitou travels to Northwest Bay.

Rainy River plays in Stratton.

In the men's division of the Borderland Soccer League, Manitou Forest Products edged International Travel Services 3-2.

Jameson Shortreed, Ahamadou Idrissou and David Vernon scored for Manitou.

Max Williams potted both for the Travellers.


Pharmasave played the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs to 1-1 draw.

Local Sports For Monday July 15

Jamie Davis held off points leader Gavin Paul to capture the WISSOTA Modified feature Saturday at Emo Speedway

The win comes in just Davis' third night of racing.

Christopher Leek took checkers in the Midwest modified division while Ron Westover won his fourth of the year in the Street Stocks.



Emo go-karters got their races in yesterday after being rained out Friday.

Raice Westover was the feature winner in junior 1.

A.J. Kellar took the win in junior 2.

Delbert Collette collected the feature in the senior open division.



Result from go-karting in International Falls from Thursday night saw Brady Nicholson take the win in the beginner division.

Tanner Williamson won in Junior 1 - Wyatt Boyum in Junior 2 - Ashley Jonson in senior - Blair Plourd in the Master class - and Dane Olson winning in the Heavy division.




Former Fort Frances resident Luke Skaarup captured first overall at a strongman competition in Thunder Bay.

Skaarup, now living in Thunder Bay, topped the field in three events and tie for first in another in claiming the title.



The SIJHL is back to six teams.

The league says the upcoming season includes the English River Miners out of Ear Falls, and Wisconsin Wilderness back in Spooner.

On-line reports says the Wisconsin squad will be run by Donnie Roberts who held the Wilderness franchise before its relocation to Cloquet in 2012 playing as the Minnesota Wilderness.

The Minnesota club has since joined the North American Hockey League.



CCM Hockey will be a big part of the season ending awards for the Superior International Junior Hockey League.

A partnership will see the iconic hockey equipment maker become the main sponsor of new first and second team all-star awards as well the Gary Cook Memorial Award for SIJHL executive of the year and rookie of the year awards.



Both games in the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League will be played in Couchiching First Nations tonight.

Couchiching and the Lynx kick things off at 6 p.m. with the Fort Frances Her-icanes and Sabaskong Cougars following right after.




In the Borderland Soccer League men's division, it's Pharmasave facing International Travel Services.

Senior Pharmasave is up against the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs.

Local Sports For Friday July 12

Don Copenance belted a pair of home runs and pitched for the win as Big Grassy thumbed Barwick 11-2

Elsewhere in the Rainy River District Fastball League, Sight and Sound out slugged the Sabaskong Lakers 14-6.

Couchiching doubled up the Sabaskong Cubs 4-2.

Beefs Warriors defeated Northwest Bay 9-3.

Rainy River got by Dawson 15-13.

Stratton beat Big Island  9-4.



Fort Frances native Steve Arpin failed to qualify in the final of yesterday's Global Rallycross race in New Hampshire.

His car stalled in the first lap of a  qualifying heat while battling for second and was forced to retire early.

He next races in Bristol, Tennessee July 20.

Mike Webb scored twice as Senior Pharmasave blanked Manitou Forest Products 2-0 in a men's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

In the other game, Ben McBride and Max Williams each scored twice as International Travel Services defeated the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs 6-1.



Fort Frances native Steve Aprin races in his third Global Rallycross race today in New Hampshire.

He's sixth overall in the standings following previous events in Brazil and Germany.

Plenty of scoring the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League.

Claire Crichton scored four times in helping Boston Pizza to a 10-0 win over Al's Raquet Stringing.

Laureen Peters added three with Alison Brown notching a pair and Colleen Hogan adding the other for BP.

Jessica Caul netted a hat trick as the La Place Rendez Vous Voyageurs beat Taggs Sources For Sports to remain unbeaten in 9 games.

Barwick took over third spot in the Rainy River District Fastball League  with a 5-4 win over Stratton.

Manitou past the Eagles for fourth with a 7-3 win over their own over Couchiching.

Elsewhere Rainy River clobbered Big Island 14-1.

Northwest Bay earned a win by forfeit over the Sabaskong Lakers

Games between Sight & Sound and Sabaskong Cubs and Dawson at Big Grassy were postponed.
