Local Sports for Friday August 12

Manitou Forest Products and Al's Racquet Stringing are this year's champions in the Borderland Soccer League.

Manitou won the men's title by blanking the Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 2-0.

Al's Racquet Stringing won the women's crown by the same 2-0 score over Taggs Source for Sports.




The League also handed out its season-ending awards.

Mitch Cain with Manitou and Sara Roach with Taggs were named the division's MVP's

Pharmasave's Mark Clifford and Amy Wilson-Hands with Boston Pizza picked up the top goaltender awards.

Jeremy Nussbaumer with Pharmasave and Laureen Peters and Allison Brown with Boston Pizza earned the Golden Boot awards as the divisions top goal scorers.

Other winners were Dirk Friesen with Emo and Jessica Caul of the Voyageurs as the most sportsman like.

Defensive Players of the Year were Mike Ohman with Pharmasave and Jessica Taggart.

Laura Baer with Manitou and Boston Pizza's Claire Hyatt were named Rookies of the Year.



The Sight and Sound Wolves dropped their first game at the North American Fastpitch Association's World Series in Rockford Illinois.

The Wolves lost 3-1 to a team from Illinois.

They'll play a team from Memphis Tennessee this afternoon.



The Superior International Junior Hockey League has released the schedule for the 2011-12 season.

Fort Frances Lakers will open the campaign with a home game on September 16 against the Thunder Bay North Stars.

The league will also be showing all games on-line through a pay-per-view service.
