Local Sports for Friday January 6


Four rinks remain unbeaten following the first day of competition at the northern Ontario junior men's curling championship at the Atikokan Curling Club.

Jordan Potter and Brennan Wark of the Port Arthur Curling Club, Dustin Montpellier of Sudbury and Nick Dawson of the Soo are all 2-0.

Third draw goes at 9:30 a.m. EST today.




Fort Frances native Tirzah Keffer is in a three-way tie for first at the northern Ontario junior women's curling championship in Sioux Lookoout.

Keefer, now skipping a rink out of the Port Arthur Curling Club, scored first day wins over Danielle Ouelletee of Longlac and Chloe Gordon of Copper Cliff.

Her rink plays Megan Szajewski of Keewatin in their third game this morning.




Three rinks, two from the Rainy River district, will duke it out this weekend in a men's qualifying event at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

It's the first step towards gaining the northern Ontario spot in this year brier.

Trevor Bonot of Stratton faces John Cummine of Sioux Lookout tonight at 9:30 to open play.

Adam Bolen of Fort Frances is also entered.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team begins play at the Pipper Classic tournament in Winnipeg with a game this morning against Kelvin.




Girls hockey from earlier this week saw the Calder Legal Eagles and Rolling Lake Lightning tie 2-2 Wednesday night.

 Kamryn Singleton and Sydney Korkola scored for the Eagles

Brenna Weir and Meghan Bruyere replied for the Lightning

And in a pee-wee game, the Emo boys team defeated the Norfab Flames 3-2

Sullivan Shortreed with two and Dakota Medicine scored for Emo

Janelle Kaemingh and Jenna Clendenning replied for the Flames.



International Falls broncos girls baskeball team defeated Virginia  61-57.
