Local Sports for Monday September 20

Steve Arpin had his ARCA race at Salem, Indiana cut short by radiator problems.

The Fort Frances native was running second when Arpin says a rock went through the rad, a quarter of the way into race.

He ended up twentieth.


Fort Frances Muskies ended a 12 game-losing streak in the Winnipeg High School Football League with a 9-7 win Friday over the St. John's Tigers.

Colton Craig scored in the first quarter on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Tobijah Gerber.

The Tigers went ahead late in the game before a last minute field goal from John Colfer secured the Muskies first win since September 2008.

International Falls Broncos football squad dropped its second straight, losing 14-6 to Proctor.

Marcus Zawchenuk on a 36-yard passing play, scored the Broncos lone touchdown in the third quarter.


Fort Frances Muskies junior boys volleyball split into two teams for a tournament in Kenora.

The First squad lost to Kenora's Thomas Aquanis two sets to one in the championship final.

The second defeated Beaver Brae of Kenora in two to win the consolation side.



Fort Frances Muskies senior girls basketball team closed out a tournament in Thunder Bay Saturday with 28-17 victory over Thunder Bay's Westgate.

The Muskies went 2-1 during the tournament.

The junior girls basketball team went 3-and-oh at at tournament in Dryden, outscoring Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Atikokan by a combined score of 107-20.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's volleyball team lost in straight sets Saturday to Mesabi East.

The Voyageurs falls to 3-3 in the MCAC northern Division.




Several runners from the Rainy River district participated at the Miles with the Giant Marathon in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

Meaghan Spooner of Fort Frances had the best finish among area runners in the full marathon for women finishing 25th.

Darryl Gannon of Atikokan was 10th in the men's half marathon whie Julie Slack, also of Atikokan was 27th in the women's half marathon.

Kyler Gannon of Atikokan was 4th in the men's 7-K while Kiara Gannon of Atikokan finished 4th in the women's 7-K run.

Margarat Gosselin of Fort Frances was 11th in the women's half-marathon walk with Rick Geurts of Atikokan 3rd in the men's walk.



Motocross racing wrapped up its northwestern Ontario schedule in Kakabeka Falls on the weekend with a few riders from the Rainy River district picking up wins and season ending trophies.

Kyle Dennis earned a win to finish the season in 2nd place in the 65 cc pee-wee division.

He also scored a win in the 85-cc division for seven to eleven year olds.

Elwyn Adrian finished second overall in the Beginner division.

Avery Adrian was second in the junior division and third in the youth class

John Gavel was second in both the Open and over 25 classes.



Fort Frances Canadians midget AA team will begin try-outs tonight at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Players hit the ice at 7:15 p.m.



Rainy River Owls court teams travel to Red Lake for action in NORWOSSA's A division.
