Local Sports for Wednesday May 12

Kevin Gemmell had three homeruns while Josh Mann belted a pair as Barwick pounded Northwest Bay 23-5 in Rainy River District Fastball League action last night.

Elsewhere it was the Big Grassy Lightning doubling Stratton 8-4 with the Lightning's Ryan Kirkrude belting his second homer of the season.

Sabaskong beat the Big Grassy Braves 12-6 while Manitou edged Big Island 10-9.

The game between Sight and Sound and Rainy River was postponed.



In high school action, Olivia Santee had a homerun to help the International Falls Broncos girls softball team earn a 9-7 win over Eveleth-Gilbert.

Falls High School boys track team was ninth at the section 7-AA True Team meet in Grand Rapids.

Tim Myles with a second in the high jump, had the teams best showing.

The Falls High School golf team was second at a tournament Monday at Fortune Bay in Tower.

The team combined for a total score of 317 - one stroke back of winner Viriginia.

Brett Musich was second in individual scoring with a round of 75.

Alex McDonald from Fort Frances High tied for third shooting a 76.

Fort's golf team finished eleventh overall out of 22 teams.



A member of the Rainy River Voyageur's men's baseball team has been named a co-winner of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference's northern division player of the week award.

Nick Cormier of Tucson, Arizona, batter .667 last week with one homer and seven RBI's.
