Local Sports for Monday January 17


Tim Nordin has earned a berth to the northern Ontario provincial men's curling playdown in Thunder Bay next month.

His Stratton rink went undefeated at qualifying event in Kenora.



Brenley Anderson and Jessie Baker each had 13 points in two games as the Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team swept North Dakota State, 15-6 Saturday and 12-3 yesterday.

Anderson and Baker each had 5-goal nights in Saturday's game.

Baker had four goals yesterday's while Anderson and Carlee Bosma each had had tricks.



Dan Smith’s second goal of the game, a minute into overtime, propelled the Fort Frances Lakers to a 3-2 win over the Thunder Bay North Stars Saturday at the Ice for Kids Arena.

The Lakers have now won six straight and are four points back of league leading Wisconsin.




Fort Frances Kennedy K-9's picked up the silver medal at a Bantam A hockey tournament held on the weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The K-9's lost 7-0 in the final to Westfort.

Fort Frances Canadian Tire was third with a 3-2 win over the Norwest Stars.




The Fort Frances Canadians midget team lost out in a semi-final game at the Wayzata Junior Gold Tournament over the week-end.

The Canadians fell 3-2 to Shattuck St. Mary's.

They play the International Falls Bronco junior varsity team today - 5:30 p.m. at Bronco Arena.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team beat Dryden, Friday night, 3-2 in a shootout.

Jillian Langtry had both regulation goals, then notched another with Taylor Dixon to help the Muskies outscore the Eagles 2-1 in the shoot out.




Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball team earned bronze at a tournament in Thunder Bay, beating host-team St. Ignatius 72-52.

Justin Anderson was named to the tournament's all-star team.




Nearly 300 runners braved the cold for this year's Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard runs in International Falls on Saturday.

Kyle Smith of Wright, Minnesota won the 10 K event.

Top female finisher was Serena Sullivan of Hibbing who also the top female finisher in the 5-K run.

15-year-old Cameron Economy of Victoria, Minnesota topped all runners in the 5-K.
