Local Sports for Monday January 10


Four third period goals helped the Fort Frances Lakers to a 6-3 win Saturday over the Dryden Ice Dogs.

The win, combined with Friday's victory over Duluth, moved the Lakers into third in the SIJHL.

Dan Smith paced the Lakers’ attack firing a hat-trick in the final frame.

Connor Hady, Jon Sinclair and Davis Smith had the other goals.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team finished fourth overall at the Piper Classic in Winnipeg, losing 2-1 to Dryden in the B-side final.

In the Falls, the Broncos boys hockey team lost 3-1 to Hermantown on Friday.

Saturday, the Broncos girls hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to Brainerd.

Michelle McDonald, Sydney Gordon and Rebekah Ford scoring for the Broncos.




Tyler Van Uden scored the game winner at the Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals AA peewee team defeated Dryden 4-3 in overtime to capture their own tournament on the weekend.

Van Uden also scored to send the game into OT.

Grahame Kitt had the Royals other goals.

On the B-side, International Falls edged Thunder Bay Elks 3-2.

Chase Bernard with two and Jordan Tilander with goals for the Falls.

And in the C-Side the Atikokan Voyageurs lost 3-2 to Sioux Lookout.

Grant Lagaree with both Voyageur goals.




The Rolling Lake Lightning Atom girls hockey team defeated the Emo Penguins 4-2 to win a tournament in Kenora.




Fort Frances Muskies junior girls volleyball team split into two squads for a tournament in Kenora where they finished 3rd and 5th overall.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's basketball team won its third of the year with an 76-52 decision over Itasca Friday night.

A area man will be with a Thunder Bay team heading to the national junior curling championship in Calgary at the end of this month.

Mike Badiuk is part of the Cody Johnston rink out of the Fort William Curling Club that won the Northern Ontario provincials on the weekend.

Badiuk is the team's third.
