Local Sports for Monday January 31

Fort Frances Lakers remain in second spot in the SIJHL despite winning just one of three road games on the weekend.

The Lakers defeated the Clydesdales 4-2 in Duluth last night.

Ryan Wildman, Blake Boaz, Matthew Caulfield and Tyler Stevenson provided the scoring.

Saturday, the Lakers fell 5-3 in Wisconsin with Byron Katapaytuk, Phil Jennrich and Blake Boaz getting goals.

Friday the Lakers lost 6-2 to Wisconsin.



The Fort Frances Canadians midget hockey team defeated Duluth 5-3 to win the Grand Forks North Dakota Junior Gold Tournament.

Brandon Sinclair led the Canadians with a hat trick with singles coming from Abraham Germain and Garnet Paxton.



Fort Frances Snipers lost 3-2 in overtime to Baudette in the championship final of an Atom-AA tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Eric Pitkanen and Kendyn Faragher scored for the Snipers.



Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team finished fourth at the Pembina Tigers tournament in Manitoba, losing to Kenora's St Thomas Aquinas 4-3 in overtime.

Jillian Langtry had all three Muskies goals.



Lakewood Tire Eagles pee-wee girls hockey team defeated a Thunder Bay team in a shootout to win a tournament in Dryden.



Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team beat South Dakota State, 6-0 Saturday and 4-3 in overtime Sunday.

Brenley Anderson had a hatrick and Katie Stearns earned the shutout Saturday.

Jenna Brady scored Sunday's overtime.



Thunder Bay rinks skipped by Jeff Currie and Joe Scharf earned berths to the northern Ontario provincial men's championship in Thunder Bay after finishing a top the standings of a last chance qualifier in Atikokan.



More than 140 participants are taking part in today's start of the Arrowhead 150 Winter Ultra Race from International Falls to Tower.

Entrants will run, bike or ski the multi-purpose Arrowhead State Trail which, for the most part, parallels U.S. Highway 53.
