Local Sports for Monday January 24


Jace Baldwin goal in the shoot out help the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-4 win Sunday over the league-leading Wisconsin Wilderness.

Baldwin, Zach McCool, Dane Morin and Dan Smith scored in regulation.

Saturday, the Lakers lost 2-1 to Duluth with Jaret LeClair getting the lone marker.





Fort Frances Thunderhawks earned a pair of home wins over the Bottineau Lumberjack, winning Saturday 6-5 in overtime and then earning a 7-2 decision yesterday.




Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team blanked Red Lake Falls Saturday 6-0.

Colton Spicer, Jeff Gustafson, Davis Ross, Chris Bobczynski, Brendan Cawston and Robbie Rea provided the scoring.






Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team swept the University of Minnesota-Duluth 6-2 Saturday and 5-3 Sunday.


Brenley Anderson had a hat-trick in Saturday's game.


Courtney Shoeller repeated the trick Sunday.




Fort Frances Gillons Sharks won the Atom A tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre on the weekend, defeated Thunder Bay's West End Bruins 7-2 in the final.

Anna Lise Hayes and Aiden Morriseau each had a pair of goals with singles from Blake Jones, Kenny Brett and Joyce Brody.

Emo Canucks won the B-side final 7-5 over Keewatin.

Dakota Medicine had five goals.

Jacob Barker and Carter Robinson had the other Canucks goals.





Fort Frances Energy Fitness Wild defeated Kenora 3-2 to earn the bantam girls title at a tournament in Dryden.

Amy Penner had all three goals in the game.


Fort Frances BDO Stars was third in the same event following a 3-2 win over Fort Frances Skates and Blades.

Jessica Coran with two and Sarah Milling scored for the Stars.

Madyson Degagne got both goals for Skates and Blades.





Tim Nordin and Bryan Bonot rinks missed out on their opportunities to advance to the provincial senior curling championship in Fort Frances next month.


Nordin's foursome tied for second at a qualifying event in Thunder Bay, but lost in a tie breaker to Larry Chepsiuk of Thunder Bay.

Bonot's rink was winless in the event.





Steve Arpin was been selected the top Canadian Racer Competing at the Highest Level of International Competition by Inside Track.

He was presented the award at an event in Toronto on the weekend.
