Local Sports for Friday February 4



Both Rainy River district curling rinks are atop the leader board at the Northern Ontario Masters provincials in Kakabeka Falls.

Ken McKinnon of Fort Frances beat Don Spakowski of Thunder Bay in an afternoon draw 8-4, then Bob Coulter of Elliot Lake 9-8, scoring 3 in the final end to win.

Bryan Bonot's Stratton rink opened play with a 8-4 win over Ron Kowalchuk of Thunder Bay.



Dan Smith scored twice in the third period, including the equalizer with 31 seconds left, then notched the only goal in the shootout, as the Fort Frances Lakers beat Wisconsin 6-5 at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Jace Baldwin, Jon Sinclair and Byron Katapaytuk also scored for the home side.

In International Falls, the Broncos boys hockey team was blanked at home by Hibbing 7-0.

The girls hockey team lost 4-3 to Eveleth-Gilbert.

Mackenzie Raboin, Hilary Fox and Bailey Bernard with the Bronco goals.

On the hardwood the Broncos girls team defeated Mesabi East 65-50.

The boys basketball team lost to Warroad 56-54.




Fort Frances Muskies court teams won three of four games played against Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos in Kenora

The senior boys basketball team won 62-36.

The juniors won 33-32.

In volleyball the senior girls swept the Broncos in three sets while the junior girls lost in five.



A girls hockey tournament kicks off this morning at the Memorial Sports Centre involving Bantam and Midget teams.

Teams from Fort Frances, Kenora, Thunder Bay, Dryden and Winnipeg are taking part.
