Local Sports for Monday July 23


The strongest man in Ontario lives in Fort Frances.

Luke Skaarup captured the provincial title in Kitchener yesterday, winning two of eights to finish 6.5 points ahead of Kyle Rayner of Thunder Bay.

Both men advance to next month's national event in Quebec City.

It's the first time an athlete from northwestern Ontario has won the provincial title and that two area men have competed at the national event.




Gavin Paull won his sixth feature of the year in the WISSOTA modified division at Emo Speedway Saturday.

Brady Caul in the Midwest Modified division and Richard Visser in the Street Stocks were the other feature winners.




Justin Besch and Tanner Williamson captured trophies at the mid-season shoot out of the Borderland Kart Club Friday

Besch swept the races in the novice division while Williamson won a heat and the feature in the advanced class.

Aric Supinski was the other heat winner in the advanced class.




The fourth race of the Superior Dirt Riders series going in Atikokan on the weekend.

Brady White of Atikokan finished first in the 7 to 11 age 65 cc class and second in the 85 cc.

Dan Gavel was first in the ATV pro

Other Atikokan riders were Evan Marusyk was 4th in the junior 50cc.


Jase Marusyk was 4th in the 50cc senior division.

Mackenzie Cox was in 3rd in the Pro class.

From the Fort Frances area, Avery Adrian placed second in both the junior and youth motocross division.

Kyle Dennis was 4th in the 85cc class 12 to 16 age group.

John Gavel, who's recovering from an injury, still took  5th in the MX open class.

Daniel Dennis placed 3rd in the schoolboy class.






Weather forced organizers of a slow-pitch tournament in Rainy River to declared co-winners of the event.

Couchiching and Rainy River's Acey Duecy were scheduled to play in the a-side final, but after a storm with high winds and hail did damage to the diamond's fence, organizers shared the top prize of 16-hundred dollars between the two clubs.

Northwest Bay won the b-side beating the Camericans, made of players from Rainy River and Baudette.




Fort Frances Lakers have trade away the SIJHL's rookie of the Year.

Jordan Larson heads to Pembroke Lumber Kings of the CCHL in return for a a Player Development Fee.

Local Sports for Friday July 20


The regular season in the Rainy River District Fastball League has come to an end with Beef's Warriors upsetting the Big Grassy Braves 13-6.

Despite the loss, the Braves still end the season first overall with a 14 and 3 record, but the Warriors leapfrogged past Barwick for second spot.

The double-knockout playoffs begin next week.




Ahamadou Idrissou scored twice and Jameson Shortreed added another as Manitou Forest Products held on for a 3-2 win over International Travel Services in the Borderland Soccer League's men's division.

Nathan Jodoin scored both goals for the Travellers.

And the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs scored an won by default over Pharmasave.

This weekend, a squad made up of players from the league's four women's teams will compete in a tournament in Kenora.




Go-karting at Rainy Lake Oil Raceway in International Falls last night saw Brian Nelson capture the feature win in the masters class.

Mike Christianson took checkers in the the senior division.

Wyatt Boyum in Junior 2, Justin Besch in junior and Garret Paull in the Beginners class the other feature wins.

Go-karting in Emo goes tonight at 7 p.m.


Local Sports for Thursday July 19


Laureen Peters scored four times and Colleen Hogan added two other as Boston Pizza defeated the La Place Rendez-Voyageurs 7-1 in the Borderland Soccer League's women division.

Boston remains unbeaten in 15 games this season.

In the other game Taggs Source for Sports and Al's Racquet Stringing played to a 2-2 draw.

Courtney Roach and Michelle Veldhuisen scored for Taggs.

Nicole Rogozinski and Carla Penner replying for Al's.

Rainy River District Fastball League has released its playoff schedule.

First round of the double-knockout format will go next Tuesday night.

Big Island, Barwick, Beef's Warriors and Rainy River, the first four seeds, get a bye and will play the first round winners a week from today.

A champions could be decided as early as August 16th.

Local Sports for Wednesday July 18


Ahamadou Idrissou netted four goals in helping Manitou Forest Products to a six nothing win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 6-0 in the Borderland Soccer League.

The win clinches first place for Manitou in the men's division standings.

In the other game, the International Travel Services beat Pharmasave 7-1.

Justin Orr with two, Nathan Jodoin, Colton Spicer, Gavin Moorhouse, Britton Green & Maxwell Williams provided the scoring.




In the Rainy River District Fastball League, Big Grassy Braves defeated Barwick 9-4.

Sean Comegan belted his league-leading 10th homer of the season as Big Island trounced Beef's Warriors 14-4.

Sight & Sound doubled up Rainy River 8-4.

Stratton got by the Sabaskong Cubs 10-8.

Couchiching defeated Northwest Bay 14-7.

Manitou blanked the Sabaskong Lakers 4-0.

Local Sports for Tuesday July 17


Laureen Peters added three more to her league leading total as Boston Pizza defeated Al's Racquet Stringing 6-1 in the Borderland Soccer League's women's division.

Peters now had 30 goals in 13 games.

In the other game, Taggs Sources for Sports beat the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 7-1.

Wynonna Kavanaugh, Sara Roach and Tara MacEachern each had a pair for Taggs.




Big Grassy Braves won their 12th of the season in the Rainy River District Fastball League by beating the Big Island Huskies 6-5.

It was a make-up game from June.

Travis Tom won his league-leading 12th game on the mound.

Local Sports for Monday July 16


Rick Simpson of Thunder Bay beat out 12 other Super Stock drivers who gathered at Emo Speedway Saturday for the feature win.

It was the Super Stocks first visit in six years to Emo.

Other feature winners were Gavin Paull in the modified division, Paul Veert of Winnipeg in the Midwest Modified division and Tylar Wilson in the Street Stocks.




A large number of drivers out for the Borderland Kart Club's races on Friday in Emo.

Tanner Williamson won the feature in the advanced classes.

A.J. Kellar swept the races in the novice division.




Ninjas are apparently no match for Pirates - on wheels at least.

The Pirates plundered the Ninjas 138-93 in a roller derby game hosted by the Borderland Roller Derby at the Memorial Sports Centre Saturday.

Teams were made up of skaters from Winnipeg, Duluth, Kenora as well as the host club.




Women's soccer tonight in the Borderland Soccer League.

Taggs Source for Sports plays the La Place Rendez-Vous  Voyageurs.

Boston Pizza is up against Al's Racquet Stringing.



Local Sports for Friday July 13


Four netminders shared in two shutout wins in the Borderland Soccer League's men's divisions last night.

Jameson Shortreed, Chris Jodoin and Mike Sande all tended the net in Manitou Forest Products 5-0 win over Pharmasave.

Mitch Green went the distance in net for International Travel Services in a 4-0 win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.

Gavin Moorhouse had three goals for the Travellers in the game.




In the Rainy River District Fastball League, Barwick handed Big Grassy just its second loss of the season 5-3.

Beefs Warriors edged Big Island 4-3 on homeruns from  Nolan Windigo and Kevin Gemmell.

Rainy River Royals walloped Sight & Sound 10-1.

Stratton got by the Sabaskong Cubs 6-5.

Couchiching defeated Northwest Bay 11-6.

Manitou nipped the Sabaskong Lakers 7-6.




Go-karts on the track in International Falls  yesterday.

Feature winners were Mike Christianson in the senior class, Garrett Paull in the beginner class, Jake Froemke in the junior class and Brian Nelson in the master class.

Go-karting at Emo Speedway goes tonight at 7 p.m. weather permitting

The SIJHL's player of the year and top scorer will continue to be a Laker.

Byron Katapaytuk, whose junior A eligible with the Fort Frances Lakers has ended, will play for the Nippissing University Lakers in the CIS next season.

In his 3 seasons with Fort Frances, Katapaytuk scored 65 goals and recorded 110 assists in 149 games.




In the Borderland Soccer League, Colleen Hogan scored three times while Adrienne Smith added two more as Boston Pizza defeated Taggs Source for Sports 7-3.

Sara Kellar scored twice in Al's Racquet Stringing's 5-2 win La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.




Races in the 4th leg of the Dakota Classic Modified tour was rain out in Williston, South Dakato.

Fort Frances natives Steve Arpin and Joey Galloway both in the top 25 in standings with three events to go.

A pair of shutouts in the Borderland Soccer League men's division last night.

Garnet Cornell scored twice as International Travel Services blanked Pharmasave 3-0.

Andre Valenzuala knotted a hatrick in Manitou Forest Products 7-0 pasting of the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.


Borderland Soccer League concludes this week's schedule in the women's division tonight.

Boston Pizza looks to keep its 12-game unbeaten season intact with a game against Taggs Source for Sports.

Al's Racquet Stringing plays the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs





Big Grassy Braves remain on top of the Rainy River District Fastball Ball league.

Travis Tom won his and the team's 11th of the season as the Braves beat Beefs Warriors 11-3.

In other action, Big Island upset second place Barwick 10-5.

Rainy River Royals defeated Stratton 5-1.

Sight & Sound Wolves edged the Sabaskong Cubs 8-7.

Couchiching beat the Sabaskong Lakers 12-3.

Manitou doubled up Northwest Bay 4-2.



Fort Frances natives Steve Arpin finished 2nd and Joey Galloway was 13th in the 3rd leg of the Dakota Classic Modified Tour held in Estevan, Saskatchewan last night.

Arpin also won his heat while Galloway was second in his race.

Local Sports For Tuesday July 10


Nicole Rogozinski notched a hat trick as Al's Racquet Stringing upset Taggs Source for Sports 5-2 in the Borderland Soccer League's women's division.

It's Al's first win over Taggs this season.

In the other game Collen Hogan found the twine four times while Laureen Peters added 3 more as Boston Pizza walloped La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 11-0.




A day after competing at the Minnesota Modified Nationals, Fort Frances native Steve Arpin took his race car to North Dakota for the second leg of the Dakota Classic Modified Tour.

After failing to finish his heat, he won the b-main, but failed to finish in the feature, scoring 16th.

Local driver Joey Galloway, who now lives in Saskatchewan, was also competing, finishing 3rd in his heat, 3rd in the b-main, but failed to start the feature.

Local Sports for Monday July 9


Brad Loveday won the WISSOTA modified feature at Emo Speedway Saturday.

It was his first race at Emo in over two years.

Chuck Lambert in the midwest modified division and Darien Trimble in the street stocks were other feature winners.




On the go-kart track in Emo Friday, Aric Supinski won a heat and the feature in the advanced class.

Tanner Williamson claimed the other heat win.

Justin Besch swept the races in the Novice class.




Steve Arpin failed to make the feature event at the Minnesota modified nationals at Viking Speedway in Alexandria.

Jamie Davis, who did qualify, finished 14th.

Gavin Paull was also there, but finished last in the b-main.




Fort Frances Lakers have signed Brennan Nesrallah, a 6-foot 170 lb forward from Moosonee, Ontario.

He played midget hockey in Kapuskasing for the last two seasons, scoring 29 goals and 43 points last year.

Meantime, Lakers hold a prospect camp July 20 to 22 at Bronco Arena in International Falls.




The foursome of Blake Mainville, Sheldon Kelly, Sara Kelly and Mike Copenance were winners of the second annual "Bob Mainville" Lakers golf tournament.

A total of 36 teams participated.




Wayne Howard and Pat Howard were winners of Lake Despair Lodge's Casting for Cash Bass tournament.

They reeled in a two-day catch of 28.81 pounds of fish, beating out the team of Jeff Gustafson and Caleb Colwel by a pound and a half.

Local Sports for Friday July 6


Four goals from the men's division leading scorer Ahamadou Idrissou paced Manitou Forest Products to a 5-2 win over International Travel Services in the Borderland Soccer League last night.

In other game, Jimmy Nussbaumer had three goals in Pharmasave's 5-1 win over the La Place RendezVous Voyageurs.




Kevin Gemmell, Lindan Indian and Guy Arpin pounded home runs to help pace Team Gemmell to an 8-6 win over Team McKinnon in the Rainy River District Fastball League's all-star game played in Rainy River.

Arpin and Jeff Morrison on the mound for the win.

Jesse Tom had a homer for Team McKinnon in a losing cause.




Go-karts are back on the track tonight in Emo.

Racing begins at 7 p.m.

Stock cars race tomorrow in the annual Midseason Shootout.

Local Sports For Thursday July 5


A three goal performance from Laureen Peters pushed her Boston Pizza team to a 6-1 win over Taggs Source for Sports in the Borderland Soccer League last night.

It's Boston's 11th straight win in the women's divisions.

Sara Kellar struck four times as Al's Racquet Stringing defeated the La Place RendezVous Voyageurs 7-3.




Rainy River District Fastball League holds its all-star game tonight in Rainy River.

The leagues best 26 players have been divided into two squads known as Team McKinnon and Team Gemmell.




The Sandy Beavers outlasted fourteen teams to win the 4-on-4 beach volleyball tournament held during the Canada Day in Fort Frances.

The team, consisting of Meghan Bourgeois, Adrian Chapman, Anthony Roberts, Allison Hyatt and
Amy Wilson-Hands, defeated the Dragons for the title in three sets.




46-year-old Jake Jessop was the overall winner of the Broncos 5-K run held yesterday in International Falls.

He crossed the line in  just under 19 minutes.

Course records were also set in three women's age groups by 17-year-old Victoria Alexander, 53-year-old Peg Westrom and 70-year-old Judy Neurohr

A total of 219 runners took park, the largest number in the event's six years.

In the Borderland Soccer League, The La Place RendezVous Voyagers beat Pharmasave 4-2

Thomas LePine, Kurt McGuire, Ian Jodoin and Jeff Gustafson scored for the Voyageurs.

Alan Albao and Mike Ohman replied for Pharmasave.

The other men's division game saw Manitou Forest Products blanked International Travel Services 10-0.


In women's soccer scores from Monday, Boston Pizza edged La Place RendezVous 3-2.

A game between Taggs Source for Sports and Al's Racquet Stringing was postponed.


Tonight, the women conclude their week in the Borderland Soccer League.

Boston Pizza puts a ten-game win streak on the line against Taggs Source for Sports.

Al's Racquet Stringing is up against the La Place RendezVous Voyaguers.

Broncos 5 K run goes at 9 a.m. this morning at the Falls High School track in International Falls.

It's a fundraiser for the school's track and field team.

You can register at the site beginning at 8:15 a.m. for 20-dollars.

There is also a kids run at 10 a.m.

Joey Galloway stopped Gavin Paull's win streak at Emo Speedway Saturday by taking the night's feature in the modified divisions.

Christopher Leek in the midwest modified class and Ron Westover in street stocks the other night's winners.




Borderland Kart Club having one it best nights of racing Friday with a season-high 16 karts in action.

Justin Besch won the feature in the novice class.

Tayla Trimble and Raice Westover with heat wins.

Mike Christianson took the advanced class feature and a heat.

Tanner Williamson won the other heat.




A Fort Frances Lakers draft pick is trying to make Ontario's under-17 team that will compete in a World Challenge tournament.

Daniel Del Paggio is among 84 players this week at an evaluation camp in Cornwall.

The Thunder Bay Kings product was the Lakers first pick overall in the recent SIJHL draft

In the Borderland Soccer League, International Travel Services blanked the La Place RendezVous Voyageurs 2-0.

Couchiching beat Manitou 7-4

The Northwest Bay Chieftains overpowered the Sabaskong Lakers 24-8

No score was reported in the game between Beef's Warriors and Barwick.

Adrienne Smith scored four times and Amy Wilson-Hands recorded her fifth shutout of the year as Boston Pizza blanked Al's Racquet Stringing 7-0 in the Borderland Soccer League.

Laureen Peters with a pair and Colleen Hogan rounded out Boston's scoring.

In the other women's division game, Taggs Source for Sports defeated the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 9-2.

International Travel Services has moved within a point of first-place Manitou Forest Products after defeated the men's division leaders 4-2 in the Borderland Soccer League.

Cameron Gobeil, Nathan Jodoin, Colton Spicer and Maxwell Williams scored for the Travellers.

Ahamadou Iddrissou and Benedict Von Holtzendorff replied for Manitou.

The other game saw Pharmasave edged the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 2-1.

Courtney Roach scored four times in helping Taggs Source for Sports to a 10-1 win over Al's Racquet Stringing in a Borderland Soccer League women's division game.

Carly Taggart added another two for Taggs.

In the other game, Boston Pizza downed the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 5-1.

Laureen Peters and Colleen Hogan each with a pair for Boston.




A visit to International Falls by members of the Minnesota Wild

Former captain Wes Walz says it's a great opportunity to meet some of the fans across the State who follow the NHL team.

Players Kevin Falkness and Chad Rau also a part of the summer tour.





In Little League baseball in International Falls, Fort Frances' Boston Pizza major A baseball team defeated Northern Lumber 33-16 in a playoff game.


Local Sports For Monday June 25


Go-karting at Emo Friday saw A-J Kellar capture a heat and a feature in the novice division.

Jyllian Westover nabbing the other heat.

In the advanced class, Tanner Williamson took the feature and a heat.

Aric Supinski won the other heat.




Stock car races at Emo Speedway cancelled Saturday.

They'll try again this coming week.




A third place finish for local strongman Luke Skaarup at an event in Milwaukee on the weekend.

The only Canadian among 15 competitors, actually lead after three events, aided by a win in the press block in sand - an event he'd never been in before.

A couple of six place finishes in the final two events left him in a tie for third.






Local Sports For Friday June 22


First half of the Rainy River District Fastball League's season is now over with two make-up games being played last night.

Big Island Huskies doubled up Sight & Sound 6-3

Beef's Warriors got by the Sabaskong Cubs 18-13 with Allain Tanguay cracking a pair of homers for the Warriors.

A third game, between Manitou and Big Grassy was postponed.

The second half will be scheduled based on teams' first half finish with Big Grassy seeded number one.

Local Sports For Wednesday June 20


Jameson Shortreed record his league high sixth shut out win in the Borderland Soccer League as the Manitou Forest Products blanked Pharmasave 2-0 in men's play.

Jon Sinclair and Ahamadou Idrissou with his 18th of the season provided the scoring.

In the other game, the La Place RendezVous Voyageurs tied International Travel Services 2-2.

All-star honours for two members of the International Falls Broncos boys baseball team.

Gunnar Anderson and Christian Kittelson were named to the All-Section 7-double A team.




Expect to see Steve Arpin back in a modified race car later this year.

The Fort Frances native says a deal will see him compete at Minnesota modified national in July at Viking Speedway in Alexandria.

He'll also run in the Dakota Classic tour that runs at tracks in North Dakota and Saskatchewan.



Local Sports for Tuesday June 19


Fort Frances Lakers didn't stray too far from home at the SIJHL draft held Sunday.

Four of seven picks were players from this region, including goalie Mark Loveday, forwards Tyler Mosbeck and Braden Webb of Fort Frances and Luke Spilde of International Falls.

They used their first round pick to take forward Daniel Del Paggio, who scored 72 points with the Thunder Bay Kings Minor Midget team last season.

The Lakers also selected Fort Frances Muskies forward Hunter Leishman as a protection draft selection made by all teams before the draft.

Taggs Source for Sports doubled up the La Place RendezVous Voyageurs 6-3.




Races at the Emo Motocross has to be cut short Saturday due to rain, but Dan Gavel still managed to take two of races in the ATV division.

Gavel won both the Pro and Open classes.

Competitors in the Superior Dirt Riders series will be in Atikokan Saturday.
