Local Sports for Monday July 23


The strongest man in Ontario lives in Fort Frances.

Luke Skaarup captured the provincial title in Kitchener yesterday, winning two of eights to finish 6.5 points ahead of Kyle Rayner of Thunder Bay.

Both men advance to next month's national event in Quebec City.

It's the first time an athlete from northwestern Ontario has won the provincial title and that two area men have competed at the national event.




Gavin Paull won his sixth feature of the year in the WISSOTA modified division at Emo Speedway Saturday.

Brady Caul in the Midwest Modified division and Richard Visser in the Street Stocks were the other feature winners.




Justin Besch and Tanner Williamson captured trophies at the mid-season shoot out of the Borderland Kart Club Friday

Besch swept the races in the novice division while Williamson won a heat and the feature in the advanced class.

Aric Supinski was the other heat winner in the advanced class.




The fourth race of the Superior Dirt Riders series going in Atikokan on the weekend.

Brady White of Atikokan finished first in the 7 to 11 age 65 cc class and second in the 85 cc.

Other Atikokan riders were Evan Marusyk was 4th in the junior 50cc.


Jase Marusyk was 4th in the 50cc senior division.

Mackenzie Cox was in 3rd in the Pro class.

From the Fort Frances area, Avery Adrian placed second in both the junior and youth motocross division.

Kyle Dennis was 4th in the 85cc class 12 to 16 age group.

John Gavel, who's recovering from an injury, still took  5th in the MX open class.

Daniel Dennis placed 3rd in the schoolboy class.






Weather forced organizers of a slow-pitch tournament in Rainy River to declared co-winners of the event.

Couchiching and Rainy River's Acey Duecy were scheduled to play in the a-side final, but after a storm with high winds and hail did damage to the diamond's fence, organizers shared the top prize of 16-hundred dollars between the two clubs.

Northwest Bay won the b-side beating the Camericans, made of players from Rainy River and Baudette.




Fort Frances Lakers have trade away the SIJHL's rookie of the Year.

Jordan Larson heads to Pembroke Lumber Kings of the CCHL in return for a a Player Development Fee.
