Local Sports for Monday February 27


Fort Frances Muskies senior boys basketball team is headed to the provincial championships.

The Muskies swept by Thunder Bay's Churchill, winning 59-53 Friday and 57-46 Saturday to take the NWOSSA title.

The provincial championships begin March 5th in St. Catherines.




The Muskies boys hockey team will face Kenora's Beaver Brae for the Norwossa hockey title.

The Muskies defeated Dryden 3-2 Friday and 3-1 yesterday in Dryden to take their semi-final series in two.

The finals open Friday in Fort Frances.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team has been forced to a third and deciding game in its semi-final series with Dryden after the Eagles won 5-1 at the Sports Centre.

The Muskies had won 6-4 Friday in Dryden to open the series.

Game 3 will be played tomorrow in Dryden.




International Falls Broncos boys hockey team was eliminated from the Section 7A hockey championship with a 6-4 loss to Hibbing on Saturday.




League MVP Henry Gutierrez scored with 11 seconds remaining to lead the Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-3 win over Thunder Bay Saturday.

Brett McMahon, Jordan Christianson and Blake Boaz also scored.




Fort Frances Canadians AA pee-wee team closed out its home season by sweeping the International Falls Broncos on the weekend.

Canadians won 7-6 Saturday at Kerry Park then 6-3 Sunday at the Memorial Sports Centre.




The Judy LaBelle rink of Fort Frances finished with a 2 and 4 record at the northern Ontario senior women's curling playdown in Kapaskasing.

The event was won by Darla Esche of North Bay.
