Local Sports for Monday February 6


Half of a 20-member Fort Frances Aquanauts swim team medaled at the regional championships in Thunder Bay on the weekend.

Adam Stromberg and Donovan Taylor were multiple gold Medalists and captured the high point trophies in their respective age divisions

Other medalists include Mitchell Riordon, Joshua Cousineau, Levi Rittau, Cole Trimble on the boys side.

Jillian Gustafson, Regan Danylchuck, Kaela Lowey and Sarah Rittau had podium finishes on the girls side.




Ben Whitburn scored twice to help the Fort Frances Holmlund Leafs to a 6-1 over Westfort to win the Bantam B title at the Elks Central Canada minor hockey tournament in Thunder Bay.

Ian Friesen scored two minutes into overtime to give the Emo Stars a 4-3 win over the Fort William Canadiens for the midget B crown.

Fort Frances Canadians double-A team finished fourth overall in the pee-wee division.



The bantam Skates and Blades took silver at a girls hockey played at the Memorial Sports Centre, losing 4-3 to Warroad in the final.

The BDO Stars earned bronze with a 4-3 win over Dryden.

In the midget division, Pharmasave Wildcats and ACO Electric Chargers battled it out for the consolation championship with the Chargers winning 3-1.



Rainy River Voyaguers women's hockey team split a pair of home games with Minot State, losing 1-0 and winning yesterday 4-0.

Katie Stearns stopping 22 shots for the shut out.




Fort Frances Lakers lost 3-2 to Sioux Lookout Saturday in a game played at the Ice for Kids Arena.



Alyssa Penner scored the winning goal as the Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team edged Dryden Friday 2-1.



Area bantam curling teams missed out on their change to attend next month's Ontario Winter Games.

Murray Armstrong of Stratton finished the boy's playdown at the Fort Frances Curling Club with a 1 and 6 record.

Zacharia Warkentin of Thunder Bay topped the event going 7 and 0.

And Jessica Haw of Stratton also went one and six at the girls playdown in Longlac.
