Local Sports for Monday October 24


The Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team was perfect at its season-opening tournament at the Memorial Sport Centre.

The Muskies capped a 6-and-0 run with a 3-2 win over Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos in the final game.

Shae-lynne Smith, Ericka Tymkin and Amy Penner provided the scoring.




Fort Frances Leafs girls bantam team dropped a pair of games in Duluth on the weekend, losing 4-1 to the Duluth Marshall Prep Hilltoppers Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday.

In a girls peewee division game Friday, Lakewood Tire Eagles edged the Emo Bolts 3-2.

Tonight, Skates & Blades/M & M Meats faces the BDO Dunwoody Stars in a bantam game.


8:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.



Fort Farnces PeeWee AA Canadians played to a 2-2 draw against Dryden in Dryden Saturday.

Several strong performances by members of the Fort Frances Aquanaunts swim team at its meet at the Memorial Sports Centre

Donovan Taylor won eight times and set six new meet records in taking home the hi-point award in the boys 15 and over division.

Levi Rittau was second overall in the boy 13-14 class with two meet records while Adam Stromberg placed third in the same division.

Joshua Cousineau was second in the Boys 11 and 12 division while Cole Trimble was second in the boys 10 and under.

Regan Danylchuck captured bronze in the girls 13 and 14 class.



Fort Frances Muskies junior boys volleyball team was in Dryden for tournament play on the weekend, placing third in its pool before being eliminated in the playoffs by Kenora's Beaver Brae two sets to one.




The Borderland Racing Association held its awards night Saturday.

Don Bowman, Christopher Leek, and Gavin Paull were top points winners in their respective divisions.

Ethan Firth and Matthew Mutz were rookies of the year.

Gerald Gamie, Mike Andrusco, and Bob Lindgren were inducted into the Association's Hall of Fame.




The Borderland Go-Karting Club also handed out its hardware.

Tanner Williamson was crowned champion in the advanced class called while Jyllian Westcover was tops in the Novice class.




The Winnipeg High School Football League could have a more traditional NORWOSSA feel to it next season.

Kenora's Beaver Brae High School says it's taking a serious look at dropping down a division, so it can match-up with long-time rivals Dryden and Fort Frances.
