Local Sports for Thursday March 25

Fort Frances Muskies are in a good position to earn a playoff spot at the provincial high school hockey championship in St. Catherines.

Last night, the Muskies earned their first win of the tournament by beating Mayfield of Caledon 3-2.

Caledon led 1-0 after two periods of play before Chris Cousineau, Brendan Cawston and Nick Jourdain scored for the Muskies in the third.

Caledon rounded out the scoring with a goal in the final minute of play.

A win this morning over North Bay and a tie or loss by Woodstock puts the Muskies into the playoff.

Fort Frances Lakers are in a must win situation after dropping a 2-1 decision to the Dryden Ice Dogs last night.

Dryden leads the best-of-seven semi-final series 3-2 with game six tomorrow night at the Ice for Kids Arena.

Morgan McNeill scored the Lakers lone goal late in the third.

Tirza Keffer's Fort Frances rink won their first game at the provincial high school girls curling championship in Toronto with a 9-0 win over a team from the host city.

Her foursome plays teams from the Nepean and Sarnia school districts today.

The start of the Northern Ontario provincial mixed curling playdown take place today in Kenora with Fort Frances represented by a team skipped by Lorne Jackson.

His team, that includes third Kathie Jackson, second Todd Moxham and Lead Christine Sinclair are vying for a spot at this fall's national event in Burlington.
