Local Sports for Friday March 12

The Fort Frances Lakers are just one win away from advancing to the SIJHL semi-finals.

Last night in Thunder Bay, the Lakers beat the K-and-A Wolverines 2-1 to take a 3-2 series lead.

Game six will be played tonight - 7:30 p.m. at the Ice of Kids Arena.

Jaret Leclair and Byron Katapaytuk scored the first period goals while Jameson Shortreed stopped 44 of 45 shots to preserve the win.


Fort Frances Thunderhawks and the Kenora Thistles opened the senior hockey playdowns in Kenora with a 3-3 tie.

A.J. Tucker, Ross Johnson and Ian Lockman scored for the Hawks who play the Thunder Bay Twins tonight.

A win could put them into Sunday's final.


The Rainy River Voyageur's begin defence of their ACHA women's division 2 hockey title in Blaine, Minnesota with a game against Vermont this afternoon.

The two-time defending champions are ranked the number one in the west division.


Minor hockey playdowns are also taking place this weekend in Thunder Bay in the pee-wee, bantam and midget divisions.

A team comprised of players across the northwest, including a few from the Rainy River district, open the pee-wee side of thing this evening with a game against the Thunder Bay Kings.


International Falls Broncos boys basketball team advanced to the quarter-finals of the section 7AA championship with a 72-54 win over Two Harbours.

Trevar Carlson led the Broncos with 14 points.

The Broncos now face Deer River Saturday in Duluth.
