Local Sports for Friday March 26

Tirza Keffer and her Fort Frances team will look for a win today that will put them into the playoff round of the provincial high school girls' curling championship in Toronto.

Keffer's rink defeated Nepean yesterday morning, but a 6-5 loss to Sarnia in the afternoon draw leaves them in second place in their pool with a 2-1 record heading into their final game this morning with Oshawa.

A loss could leave the team in a three-way tie for second and the need for a tie-breaker to determine who advances.

Lorne Jackson's rink scored three in the last two ends, but still fell short in their opener at the Northern Ontario mixed curling playdown in Kenora, losing 7-5 to Thunder Bay's Dylan Johnston

Jackson faces the Kevin Brown rink of Kenora this morning.

The Rainy River district is well represented at The Dominion Curling Club Regional playdowns in Sioux Lookout.

Arlo Jewell of Atikokan, Raymond Roy of Fort Frances and Bryan Bonot of Stratton are competing for the men's title.

Val Stus of Atikokan and Kim Beaudry of Fort Frances are vying for the title on the women's side.

Play begins today with the winners advancing to a provincial event next month in Thunder Bay.

Fort Frances Lakers will try to extend their SIJHL semi-final series tonight with Dryden into a seventh and deciding game.

Game 6 will be played tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena with the Lakers trailing 3-2.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Fort Frances Muskies boys' hockey team is expected back home later today after being eliminated from the provincial high school hockey championship in St. Catherines.

Muskies finished with a 2-1-1 record and tied with Woodstock for second in pool play, but Woodstock advanced to the playoffs based on a goals for-goals against differential.

Steve Arpin was the fastest overall in testing at Talladega Superspeedway this week.

Arpin's average speed during the two-day test hit 190.666 miles per hour.

Arpin will compete in an ARCA Series race at the track on April 23.
