Local Sports for Tuesday June 15

Emo earned its first point of the season in the Borderland Soccer League men's division holding the league-leading Manitou Forest Products to a scoreless draw.

Emo has yet to score a goal this season.

In women's play, Boston Pizza and Al's Racquet Stringing played to a 1-1 draw.

Taylor Hazel scored for Boston Pizza while Nicole Rogozinski replied for Al's.

The La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs under-18 girl team look to extend its winning streak in a game tonight against Taggs Source for Sports.

The Voyageurs lead the women's division with 2-0-1 record.

On the men's side, the Voyageurs under 18-boys team plays Pharmasave.


Jeff Morrison pitched to his fifth straight win on the mound while Scott Major hit a home run as the Big Grassy Lightning powered by the Big Grassy Braves 16-1.

The win moves the Lighting into third place ahead of the Braves in the Rainy River District Fastball League.

Elsewhere Big Island won its first of the season, holding off Manitou 10-8.

Plenty of runs for Barwick in its game with Northwest Bay.

Barwick put up a season-high 27 runs in a shutout win. and just one homerun - that off the bat of Kevin Gemmell who slugged his fourth of the season.

Tonight, Barwick hosts the Big Grassy Braves - Big Grassy Lightning take on Sight and Sound - Stratton is in Rainy River - Sabaskong entertains Big Island - while Manitou plays Northwest Bay.


There will be one less team in the Superior International Junior Hockey League next season.

The Thunder Bay-based K-and-A Wolverines are leaving the league after just one season, citing a lack of fan support and other issues both on-and-off the ice.

Meantime, Duluth and Spooner, Wisconsin have been denied entry into the Canadian League by USA Hockey.

Both franchises are appealing.
