Local Sports for Friday May 25


The Rainy River District Fastball League still has three unbeaten teams following its second week of play.

Travis Tom hit a grand slam as the Big Grassy Braves improved to 4-and-0 with a 13-3 win over Stratton.

Beef's Warriors slugged out five homers in a 12-2 win over Couchiching.

Rainy River is also unbeaten, but saw its game with Sight and Sound end in an 8-8 tie, called because of darkness.

Elsewhere Big Island defeated the Sabaskong Lakers 8-1.

Barwick clobbered Manitou 13-1.

The Sabaskong Cub edged Northwest 12-11.




Manitou Forest Products scored its straight shutout win in the Borderland Soccer League with a 6-0  whitewash of International Travel Services.

Mike Sande and Jon Sinclair each scored twice in the game while Jamieson Shortreed recorded the shutout.

Chris Wiedenhoeft had the hat trick in Pharmasave's 6-2 win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs.




The first major fishing tournament of the year begins today in Emo.

About 40 angling teams take to the Rainy River this morning for the first of two days of fishing in the Emo Walleye Classic.

Rod Woodgate and his grandson Dylan Swire are the defending champs.




International Falls Broncos girls softball team are still trying to get its playoff game in with Virginia.

It was again rained out yesterday and they will attempt to play the game today.




Fort Frances High School track and field team finished 10th overall at the NWOSSA championship in Thunder Bay.

The team scored three podiums finishes along with several top ten finishes.

Grade 9 student Cassandra Moffitt picked up a silver medal in the triple jump.

Jennifer Hammond earned a bronze medal in the 800 metre run in the Grade 9 division.

Mary Strain earned a bronze in the 800 metre run in the senior division, and narrowly missed out another in the 1500 metre event.




A former Fort Frances Laker will continue his hockey career in North Dakota.

Defenceman Steven Terry has signed on to play for Williston State College.

Terry, who's from California, played 28 games with the Lakers last season after being acquired in a trade with Wisconsin.
