Local Sports for Friday February 5

Steve Arpin posted the sixteenth and ninth fastest times in two practice runs yesterday in preparation for the ARCA Racing Series' season opener this weekend at Daytona Speedway.

Racing for Venturini Motorsports, Arpin will attempt to qualify for the race later this morning.

Saturday's race can be seen on Speed-TV beginning at 3 p.m.


Isaac Keffer and his Fort Frances rink won their first game at the Northern Ontario Bantam Boys Provincial playdown in Longlac.

Keffer defeated Jordan Potter of Port Arthur 8-5 and will face Tanner Horgan from Sudbury at 11 a.m.


Fort Frances Muskies junior boys' basketball team continues to roll.

Yesterday, the Muskies defeated Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos 59-35.

Elsewhere, the junior girls' volleyball team defeated Kenora in four sets, dropping the first, before rallying for three straight wins.


International Falls Broncos boys' hockey team rallied from a 2-nothing first period deficit to defeat Hibbing 5-3.

Willie Corrin, Jon McDonald, Dylan Farmer, Alex Bruess and Matt Youso providing the scoring.

Glenn Walls made 29 saves in net.

The girls' hockey team ended its regular season with a 5-2 loss to Eveleth-Gilbert and will await the outcome of weekend games to determine their placing in next week's sectional series.

Shawn Filipiak led all scorers with 23 as the Broncos boys' basketball team rolled to a 62-48 win over Warroad.

The girls' team defeated Mesabi East 58-48.


Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams will hit the ice for the first time in two weeks.

The boys' team will travel to Red Lake for the first of a two-game series with the Rams.

The girls' team is in Sioux Lookout.


Fort Frances Lakers will conclude a six-game homestand tonight with a game against the league leading Fort William North Stars.

Lakers are 3-1-1 during the recent stretch.

Game time at the Ice for Kids Arena is 7:30 p.m.



Fort Frances Canadian Midget AA team will travel to Duluth this weekend for tournament play.


Swimmers from across northwestern Ontario will gather in Fort Frances this weekend for a regional event hosted by the Fort Frances Aquatics.

A total of 89 competitors are involved with action starting tonight.

The event at the Memorial Sport Centre pool is free to the public.


At Rainy River Community College, the men's and women's basketball teams play host to Fond Du Lac.

The action begins at 6 p.m. with the women's match-up and the men's game following immediately after.
