Local Sports for Monday February 1

A successful weekend for the Border Skating Club in Fort Frances.

Competing at the Sunset Country Regional Figure Skating Competition in Kenora, several skaters earned medals with five winning individual trophies. The club also walked away with awards for total points and Points Per Skater.


Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals pee wee AA hockey team lost out in the quarter-finals round at a weekend tournament in Regina.

The Royals went 2-1 in round-robin play before losing to Clavet, Saskatchewan in a quarter-final match. The score of the game was not provided.


Fort Frances Canadians Midget AA hockey team took the championship title at a tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota on the weekend.

The Canadians defeated the Duluth Junior Gold 3-2 in the final. Wes Anderson, Tarran Romyn and Jake Hawley scored for the Canadians who went undefeated in round robin play. James Wallin was in net for the win.



The Rolling Lake Lightning girls' atom team struck gold at a tournament in Hibbing.

Annalise Hayes scored both goals as the Lightning defeated the hosting Hibbing team 2-1 in the final. During the tournament, the Lightning outscored their opponents 11-3.


Rainy River Voyageurs women's hockey team won back-to-back home games against St. Scholastica on the weekend.

The Voyageur's won 4-1 Saturday before earning a 2-1 decision Sunday. Kyla Thorne, Stevie-Lee Langford, Brenley Anderson and Lindsey Roehrig scored in Saturday game. Anderson had both goals Sunday.

Katie Stearns was in net for both victories.


In college basketball, Rainy River Voyageur's men's team defeated Itasca 92-86 Saturday while the women's team lost 71-53 to the Vikings.


Fort Frances Muskies junior boys basketball team earned a silver medal at a weekend tournament in Kenora.

Muskies lost 43-41 to Kildonan East of Winnipeg in the final. They'll travel to Baudette this evening for a game against the Lake of the Woods Bears.


In high school action from the Falls, Broncos boys' hockey team tied Grand Rapids 1-1 on Friday and will face Two Harbours tonight.

Broncos girls' hockey team was edged by Moose Lake 6-5 on Friday.

Broncos boys' basketball team had a 3-game winning streak snapped Friday with a 79-63 loss to Mesabi East. They play Ely tonight.

Broncos girls' basketball team also lost Friday, falling 60-53 to Lake of the Woods. They host Mountain-Iron Buhl - 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
