Local Sports for Thursday February 18

A pair of wins for the Rainy River Voyageur's basketball teams yesterday at home.

The men's team put an end to a two-game skid with a 93-90 victory over Hibbing.

The women won their fifth straight with a 79-66 decision over Hibbing.

The Voyageurs wrap up their regular season Saturday.


Fort Frances' Melissa Calder has been named Northern Collegiate Hockey Association's Player-of-the-Week in the Women's Division.

Calder plays for Marian University in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin.


For the second week in a row, a member of the Rainy River Voyageurs women's basketball team has been named northern division player of the week by the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.

Shawncinee Lay of Flint Michigan averaged 19 points 15 rebounds and 3 assists to help Rainy River to a 2-0 record last week.

Lay also won honours the week before.


Alyssa Alderson scored with only a few minutes remaining in the game to give Kaemingh Esso a 1-nothing victory over the Emo Penguins in atom girls hockey action last night.

Elsewhere, the Rolling Lake Lightning fell 6-3 to the hands of the International Falls under-10 girls team.

Annalise Hayes scored twice while Abby Plourde adding the other for the Lightning.
