Local Sports for Thursday February 11

After dropping four straight, Tim Nordin and his Stratton rink rallied for a pair of wins yesterday at the Northern Ontario men's curling playdown in Sudbury.

The team earned its first victory yesterday morning against Thunder Bay's Mike Assad before edging Colbalt's Robbie Gordon 6-5 in the afternoon draw.

The Stratton foursome will face Thunder Bay's Art Lappalainen this afternoon and Alan Belec of Sault Ste. Marie tonight.


Jordan Carne's second goal of the game with less than a minute to go gave the Fort Frances Lakers a 5-4 victory over the Sioux Lookout Flyers in Sioux Lookout.

It was the second straight win for the Lakers over the 3rd place Flyers.

Byron Katapaytuk, Tyler Stevenson and Tim Hennessey had the other Laker goals.

Jameson Shortreed earned the win in net.


International Falls Broncos girls' hockey team will open play for the section 7-A championship today in Princeton.

The Broncos are seeded sixth.

Elsewhere, the boys' hockey team will travel to Baudette to play the Lake of the Woods Bears.

The boys' basketball team is in Greenway while the girls' team hosts Greenway - 7:30 at Falls High School.


Fort Frances Muskies court teams will conclude their regular NORWOSSA season with games in Kenora today against the Beaver Brae Broncos.

Championships take place next week in Dryden.


In area college ball, Rainy River Voyageurs split games against Vermilion.

The women's team won 75-64, but the men dropped a 95-73 decision to Vermilion.
