Local Sports For Friday January 10

The road to the Brier starts in Fort Frances for several northern Ontario curling teams today.

Adam Bolen of Fort Frances is among eight other rinks competing in a northern Ontario men's qualifier with three to advance to the provincials.

Bolen's rink opens play this morning with a game against John Cummine of Sioux Lookout.

Stratton Trevor Bonot, who's skipping a Thunder Bay team is also competing and Dan Lemieux of Sault Ste. Marie this morning.



A second change to qualify for the Northern Ontario bantam curling provincials goes this weekend in Stratton for two district teams.

Rinks skipped by Hailey Beaudry of Fort Frances and Lindsay Cain of Atikokan compete against each other after failing to advance at a regional event last month.

The winner heads to the provincials later this month in Sault Ste. Marie.

There are no district teams in the boys qualifier as Chris Silver's Fort Frances rink booked its trip to the provincials by winning the last month's regional event.

In boys basketball, the Muskies senior team scored a 61-37 win over Kenora's Beaver Brae Broncos while the juniors beat the Broncos 43-39.

In girls volleyball, the seniors swept Kenora in 3 sets while the juniors took the Broncos to five before winning.

This weekend, the girls volleyball teams head to Kenora for tournament play.



A three-goal first period paced the International Falls Broncos girls hockey team to a 4-2 win over Eveleth-Gilbert.

Hillary Fox, Sydney Raboin, Amy Auran and Jenna Anderson with the Bronco goals.



The Broncos boys hockey team was shut out for the second straight night, losing 2-0 to Virginia.

They host Greenway tonight.



The Bronco girls basketball team lost 69-51 to Grand Rapids, despite a 20 point performance from Teagan Anderson.

The Broncos are back on the court tonight in Hibbing.
