Local Sports For Tuesday January 28

Fort Frances Muskies curling teams showed they'll be the ones to beat at the NorWossa championships next month.

The boys team, skipped by Reece Jones, the girl's skipped by Hailey Beaudry and the mixed team skipped by Matt Grant all went undefeated at a qualifying event at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

The finals take place in Sioux Lookout at the end of February.



Because of the school closures in Minnesota, some games involving Falls High School has been postponed.

The Bronco boys basketball game with Virginia scheduled for tonight has been cancelled as has the boys hockey game with North Shore.

A girls basketball game with Mountain Iron-Buhl last night was also called off.

The girls are scheduled to play Deer River tonight.



Jay Petervary of Idaho is the first to cross the finish on bike in the Arrowhead Ultra 135 that started yesterday morning in International Falls.

Petervary finished the course short after 3 a.m. this morning.

The run and ski portions of the event continue, but weather has been a factor with several competitors dropping out yesterday.



Fort Frances Lakers have moved up a position in the weekly Canadian Junior Hockey League rankings.

They are now sixth, up from the number 7 spot last week.

They're in Hoyt Lakes tonight to face the Minnesota Iron Rangers.



Meantime, Lakers forward Lucas Debenedet has be selected the SIJHL player of the week for second time this year.

The International Falls native registered seven points in three games last week, including a four-goal performance in last Thursday's 5-2 win over Dryden.

Debenedet also won the award at the start of the season.




Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams back in action tonight.

The boys team has a NorWossa game against Dryden - 7:15 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.

The girls team takes on International Falls - 7 p.m. at Bronco Arena.



The Arrowhead Ultra has its first female finisher.

Tracy Petervacy of Indiana finished the bike portion of the event at around 10:30 a.m. this morning.

Her husband, Jay, was the first to finish at around 3 a.m., some 20 hours after the start of the race in International Falls.

Competition in the run and bike events continue.
