Local Sports for Wednesday September 29

A shorthanded goal by Blake Boaz late in the second period helped the Fort Frances Lakers to a 3-2 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs at the Ice for Kids Arena.

It's the first win by a Fort Frances team over the Dogs since February 2009, a winless streak stretching 13-games.

Byron Katapaytuk and Tyler Stevenson had the other Laker goals with Tyler Ampe picking up the win in net.



Falls High School cross-country teams earned two titles at a meet in Ely.

The varsity girls were first overall on the strength of a 3rd place run by Amy Auran and Amber Harm's fourth place finish.

The junior high team had four runners in the top ten including Ian Ducharme who finished second.

John Sobczynski was fifth for the varsity boys team that placed second in its division.



International Falls Broncos girls' volleyball team won its second straight with five-set victory over Virginia.

Broncos took the first two sets before Virginia forced the fifth and deciding set by taking the next two.



Fort Frances Muskies court teams are on the court today in Kenora to face the Beaver Brae Broncos in NORWOSSA action.

Both the junior girls basketball and senior boys volleyball teams are looking for their first wins.

Atikokan Voyageurs court teams are in NORWOSSA "A" action, hosting Ignace.
