Local Sports for Monday May 9

A member of the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey has been selected in the Ontario Hockey League draft on Saturday.

Colton Spicer was a 13th round pick of the Sudbury Wolves.

Jordan Larson, also of Fort Frances and played hockey with the Thunder Bay Kings AAA midget program, was a 12th round pick of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.



International Falls Broncos boys baseball team took two of three games played on the weekend.

Friday, they walloped Mesabi East 11-1 in a game called after five innings.

Saturday the Broncos beat Duluth Marshall in Duluth 5-2 before losing 4-3 to Hermanton.

Broncos host Virginia - 4:30 p.m. at Scheela Field.



Falls High School boys and girls track teams both placed second at the Lake of the Woods Booster Invitational.

Alicia Hendrickson set a new school record in the girls pole vault with a jump of 10 feet 2 inches.

She also won the triple jump while Savannah Olson took wins in the discuss and shot put.

Jake Jensen in the pole vault and the 4 by 800 relay team earned wins for the boys teams.



Rainy River Voyageurs men's baseball team wrapped up its season with three losses to Mesabi East Saturday.

The Voyageurs first lost 8-6 in the completion of a suspended game from last weekend, before losing 4-0 and 6-1.



Taylor Whitehead of Fort Frances ended a week at the junior badminton championships in Richmond, B.C. with a loss in the consolation side of the boys doubles on Friday.

The 12-year-old also participated in boys singles and mixed doubles.



Another huge medal haul for members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts swim team.

Donovan Taylor lead with 7 first place finishes at a meet in Winnipeg on the weekend, giving him the boys 15 and under high points trophy - a team first.

Adam Stromberg came first in the 50 metre freestyle along with capturing five second and two third place finishes.



Mitch Cain of Fort Frances has earned some recognition from his United States Hockey League club.

Cain was awarded the Des Moines Bucanneers Booster club scholarship award and a team award recognizing a players involvement in the community.

Cain will play for Bemidji State next winter.



Kyle Turgeon of Fort Frances was among five players to earn Royal Bank Cup legacy scholarships.

The 20-year-old forward with the Manitoba's Portage Terriers was presented the $500 scholarship at the tournament's award banquet in Camrose, Alberta.
