Local Sports For Monday October 1


Fort Frances Lakers were shutout Saturday by the Minnesota Wilderness 4-0.

The Lakers also lost 5-2 Friday in their home opener against the Wilderness.

Lakers are tied for last with Duluth and Sioux Lookout.




Fort Frances Canadians double A pee-wee team opened play in the new Northwestern Ontario Pee-wee AA League with a pair of shutout wins Saturday in Vermilion Bay.

In the opener, Kendyn Farragher scored twice and Matt Booth got the shutout as the Canadians blanked Kenora 6-0.

Nick Hahkala, James Gushulak, Sullivan Shortreed and Eric Pitkanen had the others.

The Canadian then blanked Sioux Lookout 2-0 on goals by Shortreed and Gushalak.

Spencer Murphy had the win in net.



Fort Frances native Jillian Langtry scored her first NCAA goal in helping the Maine Black Bears to a 4-0  win over Dalhousie.




Sean Gaudry and John Blight were winners of the Rainy River Walleye tournament.

Their two-day catch of just over 24 lbs was a pound more than second place finishers Doug McBride and Steve Ballan.




Falls High School swim team finished fifth at the Taconite Invitational in Aurora.

Sarah Todd's third place finish in the 200 yard i-m was the teams best showing.




International Falls Broncos volleyball team finished sixth out of 16 teams at a weekend tournament in Virginia.

The Broncos went two and two with wins straight-set wins over Big Fork and Nashwauk, but lost to Northwoods and Northeast Range.

Meantime, the Broncos are home to Hibbing tonight, 7 pm at Falls High School.




Fort Frances senior boys volleyball team will be happy to serve you tonight.

The team's holding a celebrity server event at Boston Pizza tonight.

A percentage of sales from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. will go to the team as it prepared for a competitive tournament in Winnipeg at the event of the month.






The new Fort Frances junior football club plays its first game tonight.

They'll face the International Falls Broncos junior varsity squad at Bronco Stadium beginning at 4:30 p.m.
