Local Sports For Tuesday October 9


Fort Frances Lakers ended a four-game losing streak with a pair of road wins on the weekend.

The Lakers first ended the streak Saturday in Thunder Bay with a 6-1 win over the North Stars.

Sunday the Lakers earned a 3-1 win over Duluth.

Goaltender Tanner Hamilton earned both wins in net and was named the SIJHL's player of the week for his efforts.




Fort Frances Canadians split games Saturday in the Northwestern Ontario pee-wee AA league.

The Canadians first lost 5-3 to Dryden with Ethan Carlson-Jourdain,  Eric Pitkanen, and James Gushlak scoring goals.

They then shutout Kenora 8-0.

Sullivan Shortreed and Carlson-Jourdain each had a pair of goals.

Singles went to Pitkanen, Nick Hahkala, Sheldon Kelly, and Jake Clendenning.

Matt Booth recorded the shutout.




Fort Frances Muskies girls hockey team blanked Rainy River Community College 3-0 in an exhibition game Friday night.

Katie Sinclair, Hailey Clendenning and Amy Penner provided the scoring.




Emo's Luke Judson scored three times in helping Lakehead University's hockey team to two wins over Guelph on the weekend.

Judson leads the Thunderwolves in scoring with 5 goals and 9 points.




Fort Frances junior football team defeated the Dryden Falcons 46-12 Saturday for their second straight win.

Dougie DeBernardeaux rushed for three touchdowns while Jarrod Ball ran for two more.

Quarterback Eric Matthews threw TD passes to Cole Kowalski and Dylon Woolsey.
