Local Sports For Tuesday August 20

In the Rainy River District Women's Fastball League playoffs,  Red Gut defeat Couchiching 5-3 with Lynn Windego earning the win on the mound.

The Lynn defeated Sabaskong 22-8.

Karma Andy credited with the win.


Ladd Ojala of Minneapolis was the first to finish among 60 competitors taking part in the Backus Rainy Lake Triathlon on the weekend.

He finished in just over 1 hours and 2 minutes.

Kari Heyn, of McGregor, Iowa was the first female finisher, placing second overall.

Jeff Tilbury of Fort Frances was third.

Women 20-29 - Jennifer Hawley, Fort Frances - 1:07:53
Women 30-39 - Kari Heyn, McGregor, IA - 1:03:57
Women 40-49 - Megan Reid, Fort Frances - 1:12:12
Women 50-59 - Julie Larson, International Falls - 1:23:22
Women 60+ - Gaydonna Baker, Emo - 1:30:29



A key component to the Fort Frances Lakers offense is back.

Kevin Kurm was second in team scoring during last year's playoffs.

Coach Wayne Strachan is hoping the Thunder Bay native can build on that success in the upcoming season.
